Funny, I have used the same things in my studio, except I had creepy spiders lol. Other drummers love them. Brings out the kid in them. Plus, they're a hell of a lot cheaper than even generic versions of moon gel.

Good thing about these is that you can get larger sizes, for cheap at a Dollar Store, and cut them.down as needed.

Great hack! Spent 2 bucks on a Hallowe'en gel cling skeleton and got drum muffling for life. They even look cool because they are little bones of various shapes and sizes, also white, so no staining of the heads.

They seem to work. However, my coated heads are stained red, green, and yellow. Also blue from the Moongel.

The dollar store also has gel shoe inserts that are thicker than this crap and sticky on one side.
Works much better.
Just cut into pieces and you're good to go.
I've switched to adhesive furniture felts. Not as gummy, super cheap and work like a charm!
To anyone who is reading this, I used this hack and the red gels left a stain only on coated heads after a day. Pink and orange ones don't leave a stain though.

hot glue will do a decent job at muffling although it's not as quickly removed or replaced.. it is a decent solution for muffling a drum and you never have to worry about loosing or cleaning your gels. it can be removed with a knife quickly just don't puncture your heads in the process.. Dave, great videos! thanks so much for all that you do! keep it up!

I like that you cut them down by square size. I was thinking you would go by weight using a kitchen scale. Since the Gel Clings are more dense, I would assume, they would dampen more, compared to a a Moongel of equal size.
I have used a pack of sticky Ghosts, that I grabbed at a gas station (they were more than $1, but, ..... their ghosts), that I keep in my fix it kit; unfortunately they do not glow. I also have some Sticky hands, they are a little easier to find and not seasonal.

I had this exact same idea a long time ago! It may be worth noting however, that some of these can leave nasty oily stains on your heads.

i just fold a paper tissue a bunch of times and then stick it on with duct tape. works just fine and didn't really cost anything
I bought a new pack of moon gels a while back and i had to take my druma down for a bit (i keep them in my garage) well when i set my drums up again and went to get my moon gels they were all melted together and just lokked like a blue blob. I was able to salvage one for my snare but have tuned ny drums to where i don't need them anymore.
I heard a little bit more of muffling with the letters but its perfectly fine.. I love this idea!!!!
I saw a video in which guys melted these letters into the entire piece and then cut it into pieces of any size and form they wanted :) They used a frying-pan for melting.

The dog bone is my personal favorite! Great idea BTW.....but gaff tape is my go to. I get the best and most consistent sounds that way. And the tuning on the heads lasts literally years on my studio kits. I can’t stand moon gels. They have not been able to outperform gaff tape on any level IMO. 1 roll of Gaff for 1 drum set can last you a couple years. Plus when removing layers I just stick it back on the roll. It also looks cooler.....grittier. Anyway. Great idea!

just get drum dots, they are better
they clean easy with soap and water
MoonGel cleans the same way. That's also how you can get them their tackiness back if they got dusty.

Just sounds better without any muffling. A good drum tuned properly shouldn't need anything on it.
Even drummers that know how to tune need a bit of muffling at times. Once you have drums in different rooms and own a variety of snares you'll understand the benefits of light muffling.
It's also personal preference.
The guy who invented Moongel probably started by applying these to his drumheads until it clicked on his head...

I will remember to buy window stickers instead of moon gel when my drums sound like shit and I'm not in the mood to tune them so I just use window stickers.
