    Not sure why the dislikes. The most productive man i know in person does a lot of this. Never quite understood it myself - now i do. Very useful.

    I love this. We’ve implemented this in both our business and home life. We enable our employees, customers, and partners to do likewise. Life is precious and far too short.

      I agree. I feel like it is nonsense to nag at my partner at home if its not that big of a deal in importance as well as if I note something is not done in a certain way at work

    One of my favorite TED talks so far to be honest. While I find many talks a bit vague and "on the surface", this one gave me some clear practical advice.

    Thanks Arne. Great video and NO, you didn't waste 18 minutes of my life. In fact, you motivated me to prioritize and do only those activities that are important. Thanks Cheers Rick

    Dividing a day into 8 hrs wk, 8 hrs relax, 8 hrs sleep is a nice goal, but it is not an realistic goal for many people. my job requires me to work 8 hrs, then after work I have errands, cleaning, laundry, cooking, plus I need to study for certification exams. And I'm single, with no kids. People in families will only have more going on. Oh idealism....

    • @willstanger7309

      Tieback Comics, why not relax during those errands, laundry, or cooking?

      Exactly. Privileged, elitist, smug bs. Probably hires others to clean, etc.

    • @lorenrenee1
      @lorenrenee1 5 лет назад +2

      I think the point is that you can outsource different chores that you don’t enjoy. You can shop online, and drop laundry off for fluff/fold, factoring in your time it’s even cheaper.

      That was my immediate thought, but in principle, I agree with the speaker as a whole. I order groceries for a family of 8, and even with 10 saved documents with menus and associated grocery lists, it still takes me 2 hours to prepare the order and 1 hour to put away the groceries. I listen to music while I make the order, but it is NOT the same as fully relaxing. As long as my kids are awake, I am on duty, no matter how much I get done in the 5 hours that they're gone on weekdays. I don't think that 8/8/8 is realistic for most people. For me, it's 16/2/6.

    During this talk I had flashbacks to 3 hour meetings at work where 20 engineers would sit in a room and argue about the grammar and wording for ONE design requirement. I need to show this video at work!

      Well, just tell the engineers to get a linguist involved and voilá. They'll be faster at finding the misinterpretations that may arise with bad wording, and will use all their skills to come up with sth easier to digest.

    As many below have pointed out, most, if not all of life is work, now if we can just choose enjoyable work, or make it all as enjoyable as possible. It helps to make life as simple, organized and uncluttered as possible. It helps to work and play with people who have a pleasant attitude and to try to have that too. It helps to make things challenging enough so they're not boring (and to enjoy that challenge) but not so challenging that they're stressful or unhealthy, and to find ways to destress or delegate or get help when necessary and possible.

      Sorry for late response Julie. Why not make some of the things you list here part of relaxation? Cooking to me is great for relax. I only shop once a week and do all errands when I do the shopping. Half past of fridays is a good time for the weekly shopping and errands.

      And not to forget that the more successful you become the more you can afford a housekeeper or a gardener or someone to just come to the house once a month and catch up on chores. This is what I did and it helps out a woman who lives in the neighborhood who appreciates this job as it gets her out of her house and gives her extra income every month. For me the benefit is that I get to spend more time working at my hobby which is now my business and income too and I love it. I earn more than enough in this extra time at work to be able to pay other people to do some of my chores. Sometimes there are better ways to organize your time. This is what I have learnt on my journey.

      On this I agree with Mr Nielsen. Cooking, exercise, spending time with my kids, yard work (I call it gardening), fixing things are things I do to relax so don't see as work or chores but as fun.

    But only focusing on what I´m good at would hold me in my comfort zone. The grow process kinda stops, only get better in what I´m already good at, but what if I´m bad talking to girls? From his perspective I should never approach a girl I like because I´m bad at it, I would never meet my Love, never marry her and never have kids.

    Emails leave an accountability trail that phone calls do not.

    • @arnesnielsen
      @arnesnielsen 6 лет назад +1

      Yes, but it takes more time. Why not log your calls? I use my CRM system for calling out and make small notes there when I am talking. Perfect control and good track...

    • @ArtJourneyUK
      @ArtJourneyUK 6 лет назад

      Arne Sigurd Rognan Nielsen logging your calls doesn’t prove you passed something to someone else or asked for something to be done by a deadline. If there is no trail, there is no audit log. If I pass a request onto a team member, its always in writing. They can easily forget after they put the phone down or say I never told them. Email is written evidence.

My talk is just a reminder and a kick in the "you know where".. :-) But, if you do not have 8 hours to relax, then you have a wrong focus. It is a bout priority, nothing else...
