Sad about Karl Wallinger. I saw him at the Great American Hall in SF, probably last performance in SF. Beautiful, beautiful music maker. Glad that he had some more time after his health crisis years ago. Kinda like Steve Goodman. We have them as long as we do, then we have their recorded music and videos.
This song is amazing because it reminds me of a beautiful wife I had for 30 years and then lose her to cancer. She convinced me we could build a house on the west coast of Scotland and held my hand as I was scared of it and then held my hand again in starting our business as I was petrified convincing me we could do it. The words are so true and the greatest love of my life will always be in my heart.

This song has a lot of personal meaning to me. I first listened to it during the summer of 1985, a very adventurous yet tumultuous time in my life. I'm grounded by the lyrics; they serve as a reminder of where I've come from after all these decades.
This song is dedicated to those who are seemingly supernaturally talented. Are gifted with awareness and inspiration that is seemingly divine. The kind of people who change the world.
Too high too soon….it’s a tragedy, a story of drugs. You saw brigadoon while staying in your room. It’s funny how ppl from sterile lives assume it differently.
@@zacharyleuschner9603 The Whole of the Moon is about someone like CS Lewis, who seemed to see so much and explore issues much more deeply than most people, or it could be about a Jimi Hendrix-type person who comes "like a comet, blazing your trail" and is gone too soon, but it's not specifically about anyone. -Mike Scott, 2020
This could be about my missus. She had a terrible adolescence of sexual abuse, heroin addiction, exploitation, you name it. She was beautiful- I mean etherially, dizzyingly beautiful- charismatic, but above all, she had a prescience, an awareness, an intelligence that was properly unnerving. She had truly reached too high, too far and too soon, and tragically she was damaged beyond repair. I miss you every minute of every day, Emma. Xxxx

Many thanks Karl. Your place in heaven will have a seat ready for you to view not just the whole of the moon but the universe . My sincerest condolences to Your family, past band mates and all of those thinking of your music today .
You are right, my friend, in general terms. In particular it is about understanding God. In it compares the author's understanding of Christianity to that of C.S. Lewis who is the "you" in the song. Be well.

I lost my husband suddenly 10 months ago and I didn't think listening to this song that I knew before I knew him would break me, but actually listening to the lyrics, my heart is breaking again for the loss of him. He did know how to dream big and strive, despite his own battles with depression. I miss that so much. I saw the crescent; he saw the whole of the moon.
Still one the most perfectly orchestrated songs of all times. From lyrics, to melody, to instruments used, this song never fails to Inspire so many thoughts and feelings. It's always a treat to revisit this song over and over again to reenergize ones soul. Thank you Waterboys.
Yes. Me too he's 7 and he told me the other day that this is one of his favourite songs. I know that on some level he understands the meaning behind the lyrics, he's a very intelligent and sensitive boy and I'm so very proud of him. I can rest easy knowing I did something right.
Been dancing around to ship of fools on and off for the last couple of years. Love to read the comments, they led me here, to another great song I dance around the loungeroom to. I’m sorry we lost him. Thank you for your beautiful music you will be missed kind sir.
This song has always been like magic. Especially from 2:14 when this lovely female singer starts, the combination of those peaceful wordless (Taah, Taadadada...') notes with de lead vocals and lyrics reaching it's climax. Goosebumps every single time again. And Karl we will miss you!!
@@squirrelbutler2119 Always ok to agree to disagree, of course individual taste can vary, even within the same song. That what makes musis even the more interesting and fascinating.
Found this song soon after I got my CT scan reports, I was so afraid and even cried after a long long time in front of my mother, I was having the worst possible thoughts and was expecting the worst. I almost collapsed when I read the last line said that everything was clear, I’m never going to take anything for granted again. I see this as a second chance to live and I’m aware that not everyone gets it so I’m going to try my best to make everyone happy. Remember that life is far more important than what you are trying to make of it. Take care!

I lost my mother unexpectedly this year. 54 years too young and too good for this world. She saw the whole of the moon. When I went on exchange to Europe and was nervous leaving her she said to just look up at the moon because she’d be staring at it too. I miss you mummy
I'm sorry, I've lost both my parents in the last 3 years, my dad just 3 months ago. I feel your pain. Always look at the moon. She will be looking right back at you ❤
Possibly the most complete song of our time. It is literally perfect in many ways. Lyrics, timing, instrumentation, and use of video to show how very savvy this band was. Absolute class.

Ditto. All I can say is, thank God for a little-known, low-power radio station just outside of Annapolis, MD, called "WHFS". They played music like this all day long. I discovered them late one Sunday night on a cold winter's evening and was amazed. "HFS" was so low-powered when I discovered them that you could only pick them up late on Sunday night's for some reason. I would make it a point to stop whatever I was doing around 11PM on Sunday's and dial them in, listening intently, almost desperately, for the faint signal that, for me, represented salvation, hope and rescue. It was as if a window, long closed, shuttered and curtained, had been opened just a crack, to give me and only me a precious glimpse into a wonderously kaleidoscopic world of vibrant colors, feelings, emotions and, above all else, LOVE!!!! In time, HFS boosted up its power to where it could be heard like any other station in the DC area, and the secret was out. But still they played great music for many years until they eventually went commercial and the pop lineup took over. Until then, HFS was the secret handshake amongst kindred spirits. If you heard the station's call letters or one of the DJ's names mentioned in a conversation, you knew you were speaking with someone who was COOL!!!

A few years ago one of my dad's mates (the sort of person you call uncle despite having no relation to you) helped cut down a tree in my parent's garden. He loves woodwork, so for my birthday he gave me a carving with wood from that tree with "I saw the rain dirty valley, you saw Brigadoon" burned into it. It's one of my most prized possessions. I always go back to this song when I've had a bad day. It's immaculate.
I knew I wasn’t the only one that liked that lyric sequence. This band is most awesome! My friend ,Johnny McCullum, introduced this band to me on one of my many trips to Scotland in the early 90’s. BTW, me and Johnny are still in touch!

Perhaps the most unique song of the 80s, still brilliant after all these decades. I wish I could hear it again for the very first time...fell in love with it instantly, some songs grow on you but this was instant affection
Great song, I remember stopping in my tracks, when I first heard it. How often does that happen nowadays? However, I would say, in terms of "uniqueness," Kate Bush's "Running up That Hill," gives it a run, IMO! 😉
I'm a 19 year old artist, studying animation and scriptwriting in college. When my dad was driving me to one of my classes once, he put this song playing and said "this one's for you!". I knew the song already, because he always played it to me as a kid, but I never understood the lyrics until that moment in the car. My eyes swelled with tears. This song, along with many others from this amazing group, have touched me and my childhood so much. This song specifically means the world to me
This song came out shortly before I met my 2nd husband Gareth. Remember listening & wondering what my future held as I wasn't long divorced. Gareth& I had 34 yrs together before I lost him to cancer in 2020 at 58 yrs old. Feel lost without you Gar. Miss you every day love❤️❤️
'round 4:30 or so,I think it is the keyboard player who enters with vocals and I could've sworn Bowie had just taken the mic. Unreal , how similar the voice ! What a beautiful and timeless masterpiece . Music like this , this wonderful , must surely be the best salve for any soul who asks the big questions .
Another Awesome 80's alternative song that just makes you feel good, remembering how things were just good and people were happy in the 80's and the music was our strength, gets me through todays world 😊
I pictured a rainbow You held it in your hands I had flashes But you saw the plan I wandered out in the world for years While you just stayed in your room I saw the crescent You saw the whole of the moon The whole of the moon Hmm, you were there in the turnstiles, with the wind at your heels You stretched for the stars and you know how it feels to reach too high Too far Too soon You saw the whole of the moon I was grounded While you filled the skies I was dumbfounded by truth You cut through lies I saw the rain dirty valley You saw Brigadoon I saw the crescent You saw the whole of the moon I spoke about wings You just flew I wondered, I guessed and I tried You just knew I sighed But you swooned, I saw the crescent You saw the whole of the moon The whole of the moon with a torch in your pocket and the wind at your heels You climbed on the ladder and you know how it feels to get too high Too far Too soon You saw the whole of the moon The whole of the moon, hey yeah! Unicorns and cannonballs, palaces and piers Trumpets, towers and tenements Wide oceans full of tears Flags, rags ferryboats Scimitars and scarves Every precious dream and vision Underneath the stars, yes, you climbed on the ladder With the wind in your sails You came like a comet Blazing your trail too high Too far Too soon You saw the whole of the moon
From the first time I heard this too today I get goosebumps...Words just cannot describe how it feels to hear this song...So many memories it brings back to me..My Youth...
The Killers and Frightened Rabbit did great covers of this song. If you haven’t checked the FR version out please do. It’s a quieter more melancholy take.
I listened to it back in the mid-'80s, it was such an incredibly awesome song, music that never gets old and brings wonderful memories, June 2023 and brings me back to the wonderful 80s
A big part of the soundtrack of my life through the 80s and 90s. all those fleeting moments and memories passed. the days the nights the flickers of life and light and magic the flowed through in and out of life back through those days

Maybe it's about seeing the maximum version of you as told by the minimum version
Merry Christmas 2024 Everybody. Keep this song alive forever please ❤❤❤❤
One of my favorite albums of the 80s. Great music!
One of the greatest songs ever written and performed. Love it for 40 years.
Xxxx
Peace n Strength to You...💙
Sending a big hug😘😘😘
I'm crying for you.
What a beautiful tribute. Death of a loved one brought me here and saw this by coincidence...it has brought comfort. Thank you.
Bless you. Dx
Hard to believe this is coming up to 40 years old! Brings back so many teenage memories. 😊 Without doubt one of the greatest songs ever written!
Wexford lad here
This song leaves me lost for words
Also sounds like come on eileen also they have a blonde back up singer two.
40 years,????? King hell ,what was that, that was your life can we go back no, it went to fast I'm only 62.But lived in the best of times musically, as ABBA would say thank you for the music.😅
I had a beautiful friend share this with me last tonight ❤
@@Jez-Hero24same here muk June 62 me but the latter part of the seventies and 80s oh jesus what a feckin blast I had the time of my fkng life. We used to drink in same bar as Martin degville and boy George before they became famous.
What a tune
Songs of today cannot compare to such a classic,,,the tune,, rhythm,,it's spine chilling miss these days
I first heard this in 1985 when I was 15. Now I'm old and to this day it is still my favourite song ever.
❤ this
Many thanks Karl. Your place in heaven will have a seat ready for you to view not just the whole of the moon but the universe . My sincerest condolences to Your family, past band mates and all of those thinking of your music today .
This song is about to see the whole of everything. To be teal. To be happy, humble, crazy, loved, loyal. But most of all: being YOU
You are right, my friend, in general terms. In particular it is about understanding God. In it compares the author's understanding of Christianity to that of C.S. Lewis who is the "you" in the song. Be well.
Christmas eve 2022 almost 2023. This is still awesome! So many memories. Best years of my life. I miss my friends. This is art these are artists. Thank you for this one.🙂
Miss you too Lee, my childhood friend 🙂

My 80yr old dad loves this song he has good taste in music when the lord takes him this will be played
Dont think that now, you have to enjoy youre time with him 😊
Wow, I am too late to comment here, it's been a busy time for me lately. Nice song! The Waterboys are legends. I have been a faithful fan of The Waterboys since I heard their voice and I noticed you are a regular visitor to their RUclips Channel too, which is good. How long have you been a fan of The waterboys?
Thank you Waterboys.
yes
The best ever written and sung!!!
Thank you Waterboys for this song and your whole career.
This song reminds me of my beautiful son. He's 22 and amazing and he thanked me once for his taste in music. Im so proud of the soldier he has become.
This song also reminds me of your beautiful son
❤
Wonderfull timeless music what a masterpiece! Rest in peace Karl!
This song has always been like magic. Especially from 2:14 when this lovely female singer starts, the combination of those peaceful wordless (Taah, Taadadada...') notes with de lead vocals and lyrics reaching it's climax. Goosebumps every single time again. And Karl we will miss you!!
yeah, I never thought her singing added very much to this great song
It's okay, just doesn't add much
I totally agree. The singer's name is Max Edie
Take care!
Take care
All the best

I lost my mother unexpectedly this year. 54 years too young and too good for this world. She saw the whole of the moon. When I went on exchange to Europe and was nervous leaving her she said to just look up at the moon because she’d be staring at it too. I miss you mummy
I'm sorry, I've lost both my parents in the last 3 years, my dad just 3 months ago. I feel your pain. Always look at the moon. She will be looking right back at you ❤
@@tammiecook3146I’m so sorry to hear of both of your loses too. We shall both keep looking up at the moon then xx
Possibly the most complete song of our time. It is literally perfect in many ways. Lyrics, timing, instrumentation, and use of video to show how very savvy this band was. Absolute class.
Take a bow, guys, you made the greatest song of all time.
Your telling no lie
You know good music!
Well worth listening to the live version Fiona Apple does of the song. Proper homage to the spirit of it !
Yes it is!!!!!
I actually think that Talk Talk wrote the best , but this definitely second
It is joy, hope, redemption and self-reflection all in one... What a song.
I agree. The lyrics are incredibly.
One of the most beautiful, haunting songs of all time.
haunting!? Hmm 🤔
Yeah, I'd say so..
That is so lovely xx I adore this song and recently rediscovered an an amazing cover by Mt. Joy... and painted a painting ..and called it 'The Rain Dirtied Valley' take care xx

So glad I grew up through the 80's with songs like this.
What, like rap song after identical rap song isn’t good enough
Me too, we were so very lucky.xxx
One of those amazing tracks that just makes you feel super nostalgic

There's something so enchanting about this song. It has always healed me in the tough times. May it do the same for you.
That is so good and people don't do things like that now, obviously you will never forget that kind gesture 👍
Amazing I was reading this and d lyrics were on d exact same time 1.44❤❤❤
I heard this song for the first time today and I am crying tears over how beautiful it is.
The oldies as the best Tracy I'm still rocking to this music after 73 years😅👌
Weclcome. Now try Old England.
Look up this is the sea or any thing else they've done
I did too ♥
Oh, the joy of discovering something so beautiful for the first time...
"Yes you climbed on the ladder with the wind in your sails, you came like a comet blazing your trail" love that line
Pure poetry I loved that line too.
Followed by the bang sound courtesy of the great Karl Wallinger 👏👏
Love that line too.
I knew I wasn’t the only one that liked that lyric sequence. This band is most awesome! My friend ,Johnny McCullum, introduced this band to me on one of my many trips to Scotland in the early 90’s. BTW, me and Johnny are still in touch!
Unicorns and cannonballs
Palaces and piers
Trumpets, towers, and tenements
Wide oceans full of tears
Flags, rags, ferry boats
Scimitars and scarves
Every precious dream and vision
Underneath the stars
Enough said!
Yeah, that pretty much says it all. Great lyrics.
The best!

Too far, too soon. All of it. It's just epic!!
Beautiful words and how some one wrote these words is a genius 🌜
RIP Karl Wallinger (piano) Thank you for sharing your talent to this world. Go travel forth in peace🙏🏻🕊️
This tune spoke to me deeply since it's release many years ago. I'm so lucky to have witnessed this in my primary years.

This song specifically means the world to me
I showed my son this song I don't know why ,but I felt like it's meant for us!
It is a privilege to hear this song. Such tremendous talent & skill.
Talk about a song reaching its climax- Brilliant
This song came out shortly before I met my 2nd husband Gareth. Remember listening & wondering what my future held as I wasn't long divorced. Gareth& I had 34 yrs together before I lost him to cancer in 2020 at 58 yrs old. Feel lost without you Gar. Miss you every day love❤️❤️
I’m so sorry for your loss.. 🙏
He's still listening, and he's still with you.
Always thought this! Love this song.
I believe that is Karl Wallinger on the keyboards and backup vocals. He went on to form World Party, among other things.
Thanks for the music. RIP Karl.
this song came on the tv and i got emotional as thi was in memory off dad who died
well done the amazing water boys rip Karl rest in heaven amen
Another Awesome 80's alternative song that just makes you feel good, remembering how things were just good and people were happy in the 80's and the music was our strength, gets me through todays world 😊
2022 and for me this is one of the greatest songs I've heard in my life. ❤️
It really gets to the soul, different reason for different people. I didn't see the whole of the moon withy first love.
Love the album the 🌊 classic 👌🏻
As it is for me,from the time I heard it back then. It is like a soundtrack for ones life..
I pictured a rainbow
You held it in your hands
I had flashes
But you saw the plan
I wandered out in the world for years
While you just stayed in your room
I saw the crescent
You saw the whole of the moon
The whole of the moon
Hmm, you were there in the turnstiles, with the wind at your heels
You stretched for the stars and you know how it feels to reach too high
Too far
Too soon
You saw the whole of the moon
I was grounded
While you filled the skies
I was dumbfounded by truth
You cut through lies
I saw the rain dirty valley
You saw Brigadoon
I saw the crescent
You saw the whole of the moon
I spoke about wings
You just flew
I wondered, I guessed and I tried
You just knew
I sighed
But you swooned, I saw the crescent
You saw the whole of the moon
The whole of the moon
with a torch in your pocket and the wind at your heels
You climbed on the ladder and you know how it feels to get too high
Too far
Too soon
You saw the whole of the moon
The whole of the moon, hey yeah!
Unicorns and cannonballs, palaces and piers
Trumpets, towers and tenements
Wide oceans full of tears
Flags, rags ferryboats
Scimitars and scarves
Every precious dream and vision
Underneath the stars, yes, you climbed on the ladder
With the wind in your sails
You came like a comet
Blazing your trail too high
Too far
Too soon
You saw the whole of the moon
Worst lyrics I've ever seen
Forgot one line......"how-on -earth-did-you-see-the-whole-
of-the-moooooooon".....
From the first time I heard this too today I get goosebumps...Words just cannot describe how it feels to hear this song...So many memories it brings back to me..My Youth...
I'm thankful for The Killers for showing me this song and band when they covered this song! Absolutely amazing!
The Killers and Frightened Rabbit did great covers of this song. If you haven’t checked the FR version out please do. It’s a quieter more melancholy take.
Brandon has great taste in his covers. You can tell his influences by his covers.
I listened to it back in the mid-'80s, it was such an incredibly awesome song, music that never gets old and brings wonderful memories, June 2023 and brings me back to the wonderful 80s
This is one of the finest songs ever written.
You came like a comet
With the wind in your sails
A big part of the soundtrack of my life through the 80s and 90s. all those fleeting moments and memories passed. the days the nights the flickers of life and light and magic the flowed through in and out of life back through those days
" I saw rain dirtied valleys, you saw Brigadoon " totally priceless, these guys are so underatted.
Had me in tears...such an anthem
thank you
