This was the first song I ever heard from The Waterboys, back in 1986 when the video came out and I've been a fan ever since. This song has always gotten to me - but listening to her sing it takes it to an entirely different level.
Sun literally just broke out of the clouds here in Boston almost immediately after I started this. Fiona, the effect your music has had on me is indescribable.
Fiona Apple is amazing when she sings anything at all. She pours her whole self into it and brings me to tears with the beauty of her work and her soul.
When I was at university we used to go to house parties in Glasgow. There was always a record player in the corner and either 'The magnificent Seven', The Clash, or the Waterboys were on constant play. Especially when you fell out of a cupboard in the morning after a big drink (It's a Scottish thing). Anyway, I've always loved the 'Whole of the moon', which connects me. So, to have heard this version by Fiona has blown me away. This is, absolutely, the best version of this song I have ever heard. It took me back AND moved me forward.
Love the original but if anything the angry delivery of the lyrics by Fiona is even more sublime. Love the way she is totally throws herself into the emotion and the sweet reaction at the end when she realises that she’s been photographed, smiles and does a comic jig. Also the fade at the end which she sings with a nod to Bowie
This is my fourth listen in a row. I love the original but this is just stunning. Such raw, naked emotion. This has prompted me to order Fetch The Boltcutters. Thank you for posting. You threw a drowning man a lifeline today.
I have always loved this song by the Waterboys, but Fiona has mastered actually being the song, feeling it with every fibre of her body and soul. A rendition that cuts across colour, age, whatever. So incredibly moving. 63 Quebec Canada.
Is there anything this gorgeous creature cant sing within an inch of its life? Ridiculous power ... still gives me chills every time she digs in with those vocal frys ... pure talent
Lol at the end 😂 I may have teared up from joy. I would love nothing more than for Fiona to get in the habit of sharing raw moments like this. For no reason than to share her gift with us who appreciate so much. Love to you both.
You oughta hear early Springsteen such as the Darkness On The Edge Of Town album (and indeed the title track is a great example of what you described). It's that much more convincing when the singer wrote it too.
What a unique person, this one. Always touched by her sensitivity. A true dedicated artist, some of her own songs you can't even imagine they might exist, a creative genius, talent cause her heart speaks.
I have never burst out crying unexpectedly to a performance before, but I just have...3 times. It must have been built up to get out! This is just amazing. I grew up with the original and never thought it could be equalled but I was wrong! Thank you Fiona.
There's something mesmerising about watching someone deliver an extraordinary performance, irrespective of their discipline. This is raw, brilliant, and extraordinary. I am transfixed!
I usually don't like cover versions that don't do anything new with the song, but on this one, the fact that the instrumentation stays pretty true to the original lets you focus on the raw beauty of her voice.

You just flew
I wondered, I guessed, and I tried

But you swooned
I saw the crescent

With a torch in your pocket
And the wind at your heels
You climbed on the ladder
And you know how it feels
To get too high

You saw the whole of the moon!
The whole of the moon!
Unicorns and cannonballs,
Palaces and piers,
Trumpets, towers, and tenements,
Wide oceans full of tears,
Flags, rags, ferry boats,
Scimitars and scarves,
Every precious dream and vision
Underneath the stars
Yes, You climbed on the ladder
With the wind in your sails
You came like a comet
Blazing your trail
Too high
Too far
Too soon
You saw the whole of the moon!

Check out her Elvis Costello cover of "I Want You". It's magnificent!
I love that it looks like she is happy and having fun at the end of the recording.
I think that is the perfect age to find an arist like this. Enjoy the music. No one is judging!
"But you SWOONED" @ 2:50....I am a Waterboys, and Mike Scott fan full on. But damn, that just cuts to the chase of the lyric. Bravo.
Absolutely breathtaking and heartbreaking… true… real… love. …🌙🤍🌙
spot on!
This was the first song I ever heard from The Waterboys, back in 1986 when the video came out and I've been a fan ever since. This song has always gotten to me - but listening to her sing it takes it to an entirely different level.
I can't stop watching this, and sharing with others. It's so raw, and so beautiful. Thank you, Fiona
Sun literally just broke out of the clouds here in Boston almost immediately after I started this. Fiona, the effect your music has had on me is indescribable.
That’s our girl! ❤️❤️❤️❤️
She sings the way great guitarists play! WOW.
That beautiful smile, jig and collapse at the end...she knows she's nailed it.
That was exhilarating to experience - she fully inhabits a song- 'mind, body and voice.' One of the greats!
What a deeply-felt performance. Wow!
Nothing like an artist covering a song with such passion.
This is stunning. It's my favourite song but Fiona, you have taken it to another level. I feel your emotion.
This song makes me cry! Fiona apple saved my life with her music! I hope she knows how great she realy is? I would of died! If it wasnt for her music!
70 yrs old and I know good music when I hear it and this women has been good for a good while, great lyricist superb vocalist
This is just perfect. The definitive version of a GREAT song. She is a force of nature and I adore her.
This is my fourth listen in a row. I love the original but this is just stunning. Such raw, naked emotion. This has prompted me to order Fetch The Boltcutters. Thank you for posting. You threw a drowning man a lifeline today.
Ha, same here...!
Genius. Simply genius.
One of the best songs ever written.
great song and performance
No one. NO ONE can emote so much anger and pain into a song like Fiona!
Check out Sinead O'Connor's performance of Troy live Pinkpop festival 1988.
You oughta hear early Springsteen such as the Darkness On The Edge Of Town album (and indeed the title track is a great example of what you described). It's that much more convincing when the singer wrote it too.
The song is not about hate and anger though. She's just so passionate. This song always brings the best who ever covers it.
early Alanis Morrissette
Jarrod Gorbel?
Goosebumps received Mike ! Thanks for the warning ! Dynamic is taken to a whole new level ! Good wishes to all
What a unique person, this one.
Me too. Just as I read your comment. She's so magic. I was wondering where she was going with this, until the tears told me.
Yes, and still teary. I didn't know I needed that release. I rly feel she is an incredible gift to all of us
I think this is the best cover ive heard
Really? The killers covered this, check it out 👍👍
There's something mesmerising about watching someone deliver an extraordinary performance, irrespective of their discipline. This is raw, brilliant, and extraordinary. I am transfixed!
My god that was f***ing incredible
Mix one of the best songs in the world, with one of the best artists..... wow! Thank you!
I usually don't like cover versions that don't do anything new with the song, but on this one, the fact that the instrumentation stays pretty true to the original lets you focus on the raw beauty of her voice.
I pictured a rainbow
You held it in your hands
I had flashes
But you saw the plan
I wandered out in the world for years
While you just stayed in your room
I saw the crescent
You saw the whole of the moon
The whole of the moon
Hmm, you were there in the turnstiles, with the wind at your heels
You stretched for the stars and you know how it feels to reach too high
Too far
Too soon
You saw the whole of the moon
I was grounded
While you filled the skies
I was dumbfounded by truth
You cut through lies
I saw the rain dirty valley
You saw Brigadoon
I saw the crescent
You saw the whole of the moon
I spoke about wings
You just flew
I wondered, I guessed and I tried
You just knew
I sighed
But you swooned, I saw the crescent
You saw the whole of the moon
The whole of the moon
with a torch in your pocket and the wind at your heels
You climbed on the ladder and you know how it feels to get too high
Too far
Too soon
You saw the whole of the moon
The whole of the moon, hey yeah!
Unicorns and cannonballs, palaces and piers
Trumpets, towers and tenements
Wide oceans full of tears
Flags, rags ferryboats
Scimitars and scarves
Every precious dream and vision
Underneath the stars, yes, you climbed on the ladder
With the wind in your sails
You came like a comet
Blazing your trail too high
Too far
Too soon
You saw the whole of the moon
Thank you.🌚✌🏻
@@erikai1817 It’s so funny, because I always wondered why people would leave the lyrics in the comment section. It made no sense to me because I’m really good with remembering lyrics. Then one day I was watching this, and trying to sing along with it, and went to go Google the lyrics, and the song turned off because I closed RUclips. Suddenly it all immediately made sense! 😂😂
Thank You...! Always wanted to read these lyrics..! Surfs Up..!
Thanks Fiona..that will get me through the rest of my life. Amazing..
Or a male 54 year old fanatic with grand kids who dig this as much as i do, they both play piano as well as do i and want to hear Fiona every time they come over for their visit! :) Happy GramPa
I love this with all of my heart. I loved the original and Fiona's version kills me.
Holy be jeeezus this a hell of cover of one of the greatest songs ever written. I LOVES IT 👌👍💪💪💪💪
Wow! Thanks for this. I remember Mike Scott's vocals being so vulnerable but empowered; Fiona expresses the same magnitude as a reminder decades later.
Wow! Just wow.
Always loved this song, & heard a few covers. With Fiona's version (heard for the 1st time), had to stop after 28 seconds (as i was already amazed). Played it again for a minute & 7 seconds, then the rest of the song. Darn! ....The voice, the shoulder sways & locks, the foot stompings, & the emotion she puts into the song! And such a natural beauty with a great smile! Now a fan, Fiona!
You know what? This if the first time I've actually heard the words ... I listened to the original song many times, and hummed along and thought, yeah, not bad ... now I hear the words for the first time, delivered with passion .. and, man, the whole thing just got a thousands times better!
She really delivered them like Christmas presents to children, each wrapped perfectly, and chosen with love.
What an honour for us to watch this and listen to this. Thank you.
I love Fiona, and I absolutely adore Phoebe Bridgers. I really appreciate covers, too. Yet every time I hear anyone cover this song I must immediately listen to the original recording. The best recording of any song produced in the 80s, I
Awesome!!!! She lives and dies through the song.
I cannot stop watching this! There are cover versions and there are cover versions so stupendous that the whole world should see them. This is off the scale brilliant!!!
🤠 Sounds great! I always enjoy listening to heart-felt music! 😀🎹🎤🎸
