Robb she was 19-20 on the show. The album, Tidal, was already out for a year. She had to - impressively - written this at 18 at the latest, & most songs from Tidal were at least in their first version when she was 15-16.
They do but their fame fade away quicky. Remember lorde? She was the it girl 5+ years ago even david bowie praised her but like any other artist in this generation they’re disposable.
I never really got into her at the time. I’m thinking, wow, what a fantastic performance and how she’s was way before Amy Winehouse. She looks stunning, too
I've been looking for this for years. If memory serves there was one of her fans that got to sit in, and the first time this was shown, they showed her dancing during this song. If I'm right, they cut that out this time.
I remember seeing her video when i was 10 on MTV when MTV was....MTV... So anyways thats when i started taking longer showers pissing my brothers off. And when we got our 1st Gateway with AOL! Forget about it!
True story...Saw her in Boston in 1998 on this tour and she stopped the show to yell at the band. FYI - the band was not a house band and they were obviously seasoned vets in the biz. It was quite embarrassing for everyone except her. On another side note, her story is pretty cool...she had a babysitting job in NYC and left her demo tape in the parent's tape deck, who happened to be a recording studio exec, and he loved her tape and signed her. I'm sure it was all a coincidence and she didn't seek out that babysitting job. Cobra Kai M-F-ers!
I was surprised (at the time) that she ended up being a one hit wonder. I actually thought she was going to be the next Alanis. Edited to Add: Okay, I stand corrected. After reading her Wikipedia article, I see that she sold a boatload if records after Criminal. I guess I just stopped caring.
Mags Black I'm impressed you went to research something to learn more (for real). Her music is really good, she's brilliant, far from a one hit wonder or from writing a few catchy songs. She's so talented and intelligent. Maybe listen to Tidal once, then listen to When the Pawn a few times in a row, then every day for a month; then Extraordinary machine most days a week; then Idler Wheel a couple times a week; then Fetch the Bolt Cutters. Then find her songs for movies (Sally's Song; the song from This is 40; her version of Across the Universe - Beatles cover for the movie Pleasantville), her I'm so Sleepy song she sang from school children who wrote the lyrics, her collaboration with Andrew Bird on Left Handed Kisses back (if you find the video version, watch it, it's great, she's great), her collaborations with so many artists especially the ones she'd be with a lot like Nickel Creek, her laid back concerts at Club Largo, at then then listen to all the covers, from Walking After Midnight, to several Bill Withers songs to Jimi Hendrix (Angel) to Buddy Holly (Everyday), to Frank Sinatra (Why Try to Change Me) to Eric Clapton (I want You). I think you'll like it.
She's gotten better with each subsequent album. My 8 year old told me recently that she's his favorite artist....well, I think he said song player, lol.
When the Pawn is effing brilliant, and my favorite album of hers. From there is goes Tidal, and then Extraordinary Machine. Haven’t listened to Idler or Boltcutters enough to make a fair assessment. Having Apple Music is both a blessing and a curse. And as far as that person who said Criminal was her only hit. She also had Shadowboxer, Sleep to Dream, Fast As You Can, Paper Bag, Never is a Promise, Across the Universe, and many more songs when Mtv was still a thing. I regret never getting to see her live. Her and Jewel. But i have seen Sarah Mclachlan once, and Tori Amos about 5 times. Good times.
Damn she was only 20 here. SOOO talented
Im 27 now and wish I were born when she was, to a 80's kid and mid-late twenties in the 90's. what a time to be alive
Today is her birthday!
Zach Abe 36 here and to be in 6th grade when her first album came out was pretty amazing, I’m tellin you.
She was so thoroughly marketed to the alternative crowd that I never thought of her as a soul singer until now.
She was 19-20 when this was written and recorded, pretty astonishing
Robb she was 19-20 on the show. The album, Tidal, was already out for a year. She had to - impressively - written this at 18 at the latest, & most songs from Tidal were at least in their first version when she was 15-16.
Try younger mate...
18 actually
She's a prodigy, actually, and wrote songs from a young age. She wrote this song in about 45 minutes because the label needed a hit.
She wrote this in 45min because the record company wanted a hit. She recorded this and the whole album at 18 before she had ever played a gig.
Love Fiona! The 90s were so weird, I miss that.
I haven't heard this song for a few years. I love it.
You should check out Hustlers movie. With Jennifer Lopez.
She kills it with this song.
One of the biggest songs of the 90s. A true classic.
Such a benchmark in 90's music
Peak 90s here. Miss this era of music and HS. I remember listening to this performance when I was in middle school
Pure talent. They don’t make them like her anymore.
They do but their fame fade away quicky. Remember lorde? She was the it girl 5+ years ago even david bowie praised her but like any other artist in this generation they’re disposable.
Brian Manning but she's still here, with a great new album.
They didn't even back then, or ever in history. She's of a few kind, maybe one of a kind
@@thundertower lorde still have it
Check out Madison Cunningham!!
Loved her music when it came out! I haven’t heard it in a long time! Still freaking great! And that was live and sounded PERFECT!!!
I love how it became a jam session there, after the song.
My boy was gettin it on the bass
Do you know Robert Randall and the Family Band?
Amazing vocalist and performer. Great line up of musicians as well. The guitar solo is so 🔥
I never really got into her at the time. I’m thinking, wow, what a fantastic performance and how she’s was way before Amy Winehouse. She looks stunning, too
Fun fact: this was the last song played in 1997 on my local station
Well, it was a fact at least
@@KaninTuzi someone had to say it lol
Angel, pure goddess energy
gus dupree did you hear her cover of Jimi Hendrix's Angel? It's beautiful.
Great song and she KILLS the performance. I don't know where I can begin.
Listened to this live at a crucial time of
my life.. Pretty amazing performance I will never forget. Love fiona apple 🍎
Fiona Apple one of the best albums in my collection
Check out her other four!
Damn she’s so damn good .
Her vocals are amazing, the band was very talented. Fiona was cute
there's a hint of Grace Slick in her vocals sometimes.
Grace slick big balls
Dang, she has the face of a 12 year old, but the voice and soul of a 30 year old! ❤️❤️❤️ Her!
Still have this on my Tidal playlist

She‘s the absolute greatest.

Spectacular talent with laser piercing eyes.
I've been looking for this for years. If memory serves there was one of her fans that got to sit in, and the first time this was shown, they showed her dancing during this song. If I'm right, they cut that out this time.
Absolute fire.

She's awesome and this is one of my favourite songs from her... Anyone knows the band's members names?
Iconic ✨✨✨👑
Omg, I need her to have a 2020 comeback desperately. She's just as beautiful as ever. Remember heroin chic, guys?! love her!
She just put out a critically acclaimed album. She doesn't want to be super famous. She just wants to put out music and do shows.
She just released the best reviewed album of this year a few months back
She just put out a new album this year, its GREAT!!!
Kyan Rush check out Fetch the Bolt Cutters. It was released April.
Heroin chic? Jesus christ dude
I love that drummer.
Fiona is legend
I would have turned into a pool of goo if i had witnessed that live right there.
Sooo good.

Bad ass Fiona 🙌💕
Wonderfull 😍😍😍

Is the keyboard player Sebastian Maniscalco's father?
24 years ago ? Damn.
I remember seeing her video when i was 10 on MTV when MTV
was....MTV...
So anyways thats when i started taking longer showers pissing my brothers off.

Now he has other amazing artists on regularly, like.... The chainsmokers... and Adam Levine.... hmmm, what happened?
The music scene changed...unfortunately.
big disco ball
What would an angel say, the devil wants to know😎
She was so cute here
incredible song and performance. None of her subsequent songs came close to this one for me.
I think she may have been 16/17 when 1st recored
Way ahead of her time. Hot as well.
Criminal was her only mega hit. She had moderate success afterwards.

She released the most criticality acclaimed album of the year a few months ago
She looked stuck 👀 great performance though
Interesting that she played no instruments, although she’s a virtuoso
What ever happened to her?
Released an album in April of this year. Great piece of work.
She just put out an album this year. She still releases album that are critically-acclaimed and cult favorites
Put out one of the best records of the year.
She was never a pop artist. She just happened to have some hit songs. She just does her own thing still.
The new record is awesome.
Great one hit wonder!
Love Fiona. Wish she'd visit the show again.
