    Lyrics:
    You'll never see
    The courage I know
    Its colors' richness won't
    Appear within your view
    I'll never glow
    The way that you glow
    Your presence dominates
    The judgements made on you
    But as the scenery grows
    I see in different lights
    The shades and shadows
    Undulate in my perception
    My feelings swell and stretch
    I see from greater heights
I understand what I am still
    Too proud to mention
    To you
    You'll say you understand
    But you don't understand
    You'll say you'd never
Give up seeing eye to eye
    But never is a promise
And you can't afford to lie

@@dannahbanana11235 the best answer an artist can give when asked what their art (song, painting, sculpture, book, anything) means to them and why they made it is this: "I know what it means to me. I've made it and presented it to the public so that you, now, can tell me what it means to you. WhAt it means to me is irrelevant to you. What it actually is, is what you should be looking inside yourself to explain. Then, my fan, you can be my friend and we can individually share in silence the beauty of this creation as I one day will look forward to interpreting your art with my emotions and background to come to, I guarantee, a slightly different perception of your art than you. As I believe our perceptions Of my art vary and it would be wildly extreme to let yoU come to your own conclusion as to what this means to you only to have me come over and tell you no you're wrong." "Never Is A Promise"
You'll never see the courage I know
Its colors' richness won't appear within your view
I'll never glow the way that you glow
Your presence dominates the judgements made on you
    But as the scenery grows
    I see in different lights
    The shades and shadows
    Undulate in my perception
    My feelings swell and stretch
    I see from greater heights
    I understand what I am
    Still too proud to mention
    To you
    You'll say you understand
    But you don't understand
You'll say you'd never give up
    Seeing eye to eye
    But never is a promise
And you can't afford to lie
You'll never touch these things that I hold
The skin of my emotions lies beneath my own
You'll never feel the heat of this soul
My fever burns me deeper than I've ever shown
    But as the scenery grows
    I see in different lights
    The shades and shadows
    Undulate in my perception
    My feelings swell and stretch
    I see from greater heights
I realise what I am now
    Too smart to mention
    To you
    You'll say you understand
    You'll never understand
I'll say I'll never wake up
    Knowing how or why
I don't know what to believe in
You don't know who I am
    You'll say I need appeasing
    When I start to cry
    But never is a promise
And I'll never need a lie...

I remember so vividly, peeling thin layers of fast-melting snow off the bottoms of my big, bulky, little-kid winter boots and watching it melt in my hand while admiring Fiona's voice and especially how she sounds at 1:00.. That was the truly mesmerizing part of it. She is so beautiful and so very talented. Yet, she exudes a aura of pain and sadness. She has a way of making sadness beautiful. I am sure she is a good thing, but I am not sure if beautiful sadness is.

Anorexia and the personality disorders that accompany it (which any reasonable, not to mention those with a keen eye, can recognize in Apple) are not beautiful in the way you or others may portray it/them. While these conditions represent and produce a deep emotional, cognitive, physical, and psychological experience they are not "beautiful" in the typical definition of that word. However, the experience(s) ARE unique and valuable. They are beyond painful. In fact, both reach the level of true suffering and should not be glamorized. I applaud Apple's music and expression only because she has found an avenue for HERSELF to make it in the world. I abhor the way she has cultivated a following of otherwise "healthy" individuals.

She wasn't anorexic to fit some mental idea of beauty. Her "anorexia and all the personality disorders that come with it" were a product of the trauma of being raped as an adolescent. She did it to make herself unattractive to men. And while she has indeed admitted to struggling with anorexia, not every thin fan of hers has an eating disorder. I remember I was in high school when she hit it big and I was immediately a huge fan of her incredible voice. I also happened to be 5'9" and scant 103lbs. I was constantly accused of being anorexic until people saw how much I ate, and then it was insisted I must be bulimic. Both of which were utter nonsense. I had an insanely high metabolism and couldn't get calories to stick to me no matter what I did. When people found out I also loved Fiona, they went berserk. I don't concern myself with people who don't bother with finding out the truth of things before passing judgment on me, so I was never hurt by it, but I couldn't believe how hard they tried to push that idea of me. Skinny girl + Fiona Apple fan = Absolutely has an eating disorder. How absurd can people be? If she does have a visible audience with eating disorders, she didn't make them that way. They do that to themselves for their own issues. Given the numbers of people with eating disorders, there are a lot of bands with ill fans, but those bands don't get blamed for it because they've never been attacked for having their own struggles with the illness like she has. You go looking hard enough you'll find what you're looking for. You want to see anorexic/bulimic fans, you'll see them. She has nothing to do with it, certainly not any more than any other media figure.

This is one of the most beautiful and relevant songs I've heard in all my 32 years alive. Much love and appreciation for her voice, melodies, musicality, and the richness of her lyrics. She paints such vivid images with her music. This song changed my life. This song is pure beauty. I relate to it in a way -- where I feel like no one understands me. I've had a lot pain, and seen a lot of terrible things. Which makes my day to day life sometimes very hard -- even harder when the one you love (and legit loves you back) buts its like every time you get closer to someone with all your dark sides and pain that's buried there that someone says "I promise baby, I'll never leave you no matter what."/"I promise you won't give up on you even though you have that hard shell from hurting so bad" then the minute you let go and give yourself to them.... its too much. And as they say 'never say never'.
    "You'll say you understand
    But you don't understand
    You'll say you'd never
Give up seeing eye to eye
    But never is a promise
And you can't afford to lie"
    Man.... Ouch.

Rand Miller my god, u sound like how my friend is, but she's brutally dark. I'm always there 4her as often as possible. Tho she always appreciates this, shes a big ball of apathetic dark energetic void. She despises life & even nature, as she puts it as, "Ppl say nature's beautiful when it's actually a killer! Do u not comprehend the true, demonic meaning behind the chaotic Pi (3.14)?" She also has that, "we're dying bc we're living!" attitude that finds life pointless knowing we'll all pass 1day & sees hope as slavery! Yes, she a Friedrich Nietzsche fanatic!!! My concept tho is even tho she doesn't write poems & expresses herself like how Fiona does per se, she's basically the epitome of a very dark, Edgar Allan Poe poem series!!! :P and sadly, similar 2ur case, so many ppl don't c her4 who she truly is, & most ppl walk out on her, even after yrs of friendship. Her ptsd level is hard2 the core! She's a pessimist. She's bitter as hell. But she's beauty, even tho dark!!!

Rand Miller *i meant2 note, it's amazing how my friend & I r still friends bc she's learnt 2push ppl away herself bc how badly she's been left alone in the dark. Poor thing even defines humanity as "cancer" despite humanity's versatility & amazements. It's bc she's always picked up the true colors (intuition) of most ppl. I can also do the same, but how much deeper she does so & words things really gets me2 think. Same4 other ppl, but sadly most ppl (tho not all) prefer not2 think! It's sad. 😑
