She was ahead of her time, especially during the mtv music academy awards in 1997. She's right when she said the world was bull shit in her speech when she was getting the award. The crowd boooed but she was right all along.
She usually is. A very intelligent human being with little or no ability to B.S. Did her own thing then, still does today with a new album out, even. If people don't like her because she's too dark, then what kind of boring crap are they listening to? She's right after Tori Amos. Right before the Beatles & Black Sabbath section.

I am monomaniacal when it comes to music and I truly believe that Fiona Apple is, and always will be, the most amazing solo artist I’ve ever encountered. I’ve never tired of her music after obsessive listening for over 20 years. No other musician is as relatable to me as Fiona Apple. Or as playable. I can’t imagine my life without her music as a part of it. Thank you Fiona! I love you!
I hate to be the guy that posts a lyric we already know...but damn "so I'll be sure to stay wary of you love to save the pain of once my flame and twice my burn" chills my bones every time I hear it. straight up chills.
The beginning of this song was taken from Janis Joplin's Kozmic Blues. I happen to be listening to Janice's song and then wanted to listen to Fiona, and would I be damned if those two weren't exactly the same! I still love Fiona, but I still wonder if she credited Janice on Shadow Boxer?
Full lyrics because the description is missing half of it: Once my lover, now my friend What a cruel thing to pretend What a cunning way to condescend Once my lover, and now my friend Oh, you creep up like the clouds And you set my soul at ease Then you let your love abound And you bring me to my knees Oh, it's evil, babe, the way you let your grace enrapture me When well you know I'd be insane to ever let that Dirty game recapture me You made me a shadowboxer, baby I wanna be ready for what you do And I've been swinging around Cause I don't know when you're gonna make your move Oh, your gaze is dangerous And you fill your space so sweet If I let you get too close You'll set your spell on me So darlin' I just wanna say Just in case I don't come through I was on to every play I just wanted you But oh, it's so evil, my love, the way you've no Reverence to my concern So I'll be sure to stay wary of you, love To save the pain of once my flame and twice my burn So I'm a shadowboxer, baby I wanna be ready for what you do And I've been swinging around At nothing I don't know When you're going to make your move Yeah I'm a shadowboxer, baby I wanna be ready for what you do And I've been swinging around Cause I don't know When you're going to make your move Have fun singing along!
Wow, at seventeen I was complaining how ugly I was ( still am) and she was writing this. I should have complained less and focus my attention on something else. Lol. I can't believe that a 17 yearl old kid wrote this.
This song is lightning in a bottle in getting the lyrics, the notes, the voicings and the tempo to blend. So well done, Fiona. Absolutely transcendent.
I first listened to her when I was 11yrs old. I didn’t relate to her lyrics then but the sadness soothed me through my own. I grew up in sharp tongued, fiery touched, abuse and her art made me feel like someone out there understood. I’m 21 now, I’m still trying to escape abuse and I’ve seen my fair share of heart breaks by this point. I understand her lyrics now, and I just hope she knows how important her work is to so many people. Hoping to see her on the stage someday, I’ll have to stick around to see it
Favorite lines; once my lover , now my friend. What a cunning way to condescend. Just in case I dont come thru, I was onto every play, I just wanted u. Excellent.
I have never, ever had a song knock me out the first time I heard it the way that this one did--almost 20 years ago. Still gets me every time I hear it.
I was living in Nashville, which had (and still has) a wonderful indie radio station, Lightning 100, with a very eclectic playlist. They apparently got a pre-release copy of Shadowboxer--it was a couple of weeks before I heard it anywhere else or saw the album Tidal in the record stores--which they put on while I was driving. I had to pull the car over it was so compelling.
Apparently Paul Thomas Anderson. Not a nice guy. She was talking about this guy many years after they were broken up, that's the level of verbal/psychological abuse he pulled on her. I've tried watching interviews with him to see what he's all about as a person, but the d 3monic energy emanating from him is very strong. Makes it very difficult to sit through any of his interviews. Even though he comes off as "charming" and friendly, even making jokes and such, it's all in the eyes and facial expressions. Bad energy.
I first heard this song via MTV after a late night metal show. I went out and bought the album and a month or so later the video for Criminal dropped and she became a huge star.
WikdSeafood wow...same here but I never listen to perished. But mazzy star and Fiona are to favorites I tend to keep secret.lol also Adelle had my heart somehow too.i appreciate good music and metal is good music but it's hard to say no to these ladies.
I’m 64 years old and I love the music from the 60s and 70s but I also love the music from all the other decades, too, and this is one of them. Songs remind me of times of my life bringing wonderful memories. This song was popular when my youngest child was born in 1997 and this song gives me so many wonderful memories of when my four kids were little, and what a great adventure! Music is one of the only things that just never gets worse.
I was a fan when this album broke. Saw her live at Lupos in Rhode Island in 1997 or 98 and have been a forever fan since. My teenage crush with those gorgeous eyes and tremendous talent.
SAME HERE!!! I have always considered David and Fiona to be at the top of my music hierarchy - no one else comes close to either of them except maybe Thom Yorke and Nina Simone. It’s so cool to see someone else who thinks the same!
There's no one else like Fiona. I remember the first time I heard her sing. I was just awe struck, and it just amazes me that she was able to write such brilliant lyrics and music at such an incredibly young age. Her voice is so deep and raw. Her face is so expressive. That is a brilliant mind and talent at work.
Bought Tidal at age 13, now 34 and still adore this beautifully, talented woman! My fav line.. "I'll be sure to stay weary of you, love.. To save the pain, of once my flame and twice my burn."
This was "one of those albums" that I was in love with each and every song from the very first listen. How often does that happen? Almost never... This sprite of a woman, as am I, clearly has not only the voice of a "Tidal" wave, but the soul, spirit, talent and aura of one too. Proving, to my satisfaction, that good things really DO come in small packages! Lol!
Don't conflate the RUclips publish date of October 2, 2009 (the date this version of the video first hit RUclips) with the song's actual release date of July 1, 1996. Even factoring in the two-year time difference between Ashley O'Neill's original comment and yours, Shadowboxer was quite firmly "out there" in time for her hubs to score major points with it.
It's still so raw and hard to listen to 20+ years later. All of her songs. They're so deeply personal...but I will say that she was sooo ahead of her time and she helped me put my emotions into words (with her lyrics). I didn't even know the term "shadow boxing" until this song was released and then it became my anthem against every narcissist I have ever encountered. I've since learned that when I feel the need to shadow box, that person is toxic and I have to walk away. She's helped me identify feelings into words and you can't put a price on that.
Wow, took me back to my teen years. None of my friends really listened to her but I loved sitting in my room listening to this album or driving by myself.
Perfect. I did not follow Fiona Apple in the '90s, never heard this song until just now. "Shadowboxer" is an image I've had in my head since the early '80s, and here she captured it in a song, almost exactly the way I applied it to my own life. Amazing. Like two different spies listening to the same phone tap.
I think I truly fell in love with Fiona apple back when I first heard this tune back in like 95, something like that. I was in my mid teens, and would have died for this woman. A true masterpiece. And that gaze is dangerous. And delicious.
In all honesty I have never heard a more mature and rounded voice that actually sent shivers through my body and she’s so undeniably beautiful and I just can’t stop saying how much I love Fiona Apple🖤🖤
Looking back. I honestly believe that the 90's was the last decade of true music artists. It was a great decade and the music was all so different. My CD collection went from Fiona Apple to Pantera. Everyone push analog recordings to the max. I truly appreciate this art. Man I got old. But I appreciate graduating the year this song came out.
+chadmish Don't worry friend...Reel to Reels are coming back...There will come a time where all artist will regret their use of computers to record music. The only thing a computer should record is youtube comments, and that's it.
I remember hearing this at 18 and saying who is this girl?! Went and bought her CD and been a fan ever since. Almost 39 and still amazed at her talent.
Underrated? It had a billion nominates and songs from it WON a Grammy lol It's won BAFTA awards, Grammys, Billboard Music Awards, and is consistently listed in the top albums of the 90's. What exactly about that says "underrated"? Or o you just not know what that word means? lol
This was the very first song I ever heard of her's... Suddenly, at some obscure hour in the middle of the night, this video starting playing on Mtv, and I was instantly in love. Such a distinct "what is this?" moment, that I will always remember! Still my all time favorite artist, and listen to every day 😃
She paved the way for any that now stand upon her shoulders. One of the most brilliantly written songs of the 90's gets glossed over as if it didn't exist. Absolute genius level material...

What a cunning way to condescend
Once my lover, and now my friend
Oh, you creep up like the clouds
And you set my soul at ease
Then you let your love abound

Oh, it's evil babe
The way you let your grace enrapture me
When well you know I'd be insane
To ever let that dirty game recapture me

You made me a shadowboxer, baby
I wanna be ready for what you do
I've been swinging around me
'Cause I don't know when you're gonna make your move

And you fill your space so sweet
If I let you get too close
You'll set your spell on me
So darlin', I just want to say
Just in case I don't come through
I was on to every play
I just wanted you
[Pre-Chorus]
Oh it's so evil, my love
The way you've no reverence to my concern
So I'll be sure to stay wary of you, love
To save the pain of once my flame and twice my burn

I wanna be ready for what you do

I don't know when you're gonna make your move

I wanna be ready for what you do

Same for me. You can be proud, this is the proof that you are still a humain with feelings :) Peace
Been a fan for 30+ years. Probably my biggest influence musically. She just had so much soul for someone so young but in a way, I always felt her unfortunate childhood abuse was a major catalyst for her mature songwriting ability.
Hi I'm glad to see a supporter recently anyway love this e
This record is brilliantly produced. Top notch arrangement and musicianship.
Damn, I didnt even realize how good we had it in the 90s.
agreed
+RE:Think Yep and I have all the video's Over 5000 on a back up drive . I have a room full of CDs But seeing it is so much better
+RE:Think ALAS....what do we got nowadays, snooppy poop dog?
Robert Maybeth LOL Ok I do like Everlast he has put out some good tracks over the years . What its like . .. Ends ...I Get By :-) I really like that 1 He tells it like it really is !!! If you have realplayer You can save any vid . and I have saved all the good # 1s
Such talent back then. Fiona, Tori Amos, Erykah Badu, Lauren Hill, Sarah Mclachlan. All women with amazing voices and lyrics.
Brings tears to my existence, so powerful. So much beauty.
I love you!
yes she is very good , you might also like nina simmone, sade, eva cassidy, heather nova.
I hate to be the guy that posts a lyric we already know...but damn
"so I'll be sure to stay wary of you love
to save the pain of once my flame and twice my burn"
chills my bones every time I hear it. straight up chills.
CaliforniaLove 17
Same, gives me chills every single time I hear it even 20 years later!
The iconic voices of some female singers are just... unforgettable.
Full lyrics because the description is missing half of it:
Once my lover, now my friend
What a cruel thing to pretend
What a cunning way to condescend
Once my lover, and now my friend
Oh, you creep up like the clouds
And you set my soul at ease
Then you let your love abound
And you bring me to my knees
Oh, it's evil, babe, the way you let your grace enrapture me
When well you know I'd be insane to ever let that
Dirty game recapture me
You made me a shadowboxer, baby
I wanna be ready for what you do
And I've been swinging around
Cause I don't know when you're gonna make your move
Oh, your gaze is dangerous
And you fill your space so sweet
If I let you get too close
You'll set your spell on me
So darlin' I just wanna say
Just in case I don't come through
I was on to every play
I just wanted you
But oh, it's so evil, my love, the way you've no
Reverence to my concern
So I'll be sure to stay wary of you, love
To save the pain of once my flame and twice my burn
So I'm a shadowboxer, baby
I wanna be ready for what you do
And I've been swinging around
At nothing I don't know
When you're going to make your move
Yeah I'm a shadowboxer, baby
I wanna be ready for what you do
And I've been swinging around
Cause I don't know
When you're going to make your move
Have fun singing along!
Tati, you’re the best kind of person and I hope you know it.
@@jesse85 Oh thank you! :)
Wow, at seventeen I was complaining how ugly I was ( still am) and she was writing this. I should have complained less and focus my attention on something else. Lol. I can't believe that a 17 yearl old kid wrote this.
How did you know I was singing my ass off! 😋
pp
This song is so absolutely legendary! I want to get a piano just to learn how to play it 1/4 as good... Thank you, Fiona.
She pierced my soul.
I'm a metalhead, but this rocks, what a work of art really beautiful
Fiona was Adele, before Adele. What a mature voice.
Lies again? Marine Soldier Shadow People
dont do that to fiona
❤😊
And before that was every blues singer
Me too. 1997 it been on a cassette? Hmmm maybe not? Lol good times!
How old where you?
@@jeffking5505 Not that it matters much, but 49.
So Powerful!!
Who forgot about you're brilliant harmonics!!
Not Smee!!
❤❤❤❤
This album is a masterpiece. I’m still trying to wrap my head around who would be able to hurt this beautiful lady?
Why such a cad would be a "Criminal"
Apparently Paul Thomas Anderson. Not a nice guy. She was talking about this guy many years after they were broken up, that's the level of verbal/psychological abuse he pulled on her. I've tried watching interviews with him to see what he's all about as a person, but the d 3monic energy emanating from him is very strong. Makes it very difficult to sit through any of his interviews. Even though he comes off as "charming" and friendly, even making jokes and such, it's all in the eyes and facial expressions. Bad energy.
SO MUCH TALENT, OVER FLOWING, COMPASSION, KINDNESS AND LOVE, ALMOST WASHING AWAY ALL THE CRUELTY THAT DAILY ENGULFS US ALL.
This girl has soul
This song is a bloody masterpiece. 🖤
I'm a metalhead, but this rocks, what a work of art really beautiful
sk sk you know it and so am I
I'm a metalhead as well... But Fiona, Mazzy Star and Portishead are some of my fav bands.
As a metal head, was Mustaine the best member of Metallica?
I first heard this song via MTV after a late night metal show. I went out and bought the album and a month or so later the video for Criminal dropped and she became a huge star.
WikdSeafood wow...same here but I never listen to perished. But mazzy star and Fiona are to favorites I tend to keep secret.lol also Adelle had my heart somehow too.i appreciate good music and metal is good music but it's hard to say no to these ladies.
I'm so glad I grew up with Fiona Apple.
Music is one of the only things that just never gets worse.
genius, genius , genius. We need you back Fiona!!!!!
ikr im dying for a new album
And she's dying for a heroin fix. And it's tragic.
I have just known her and I agree with u! She's amaziiing!!!
Batman Anderson Did she die? oh no, I love her music.
Debra Bonvisuto no
Her smile!!
@josehwinters3612, She's smiling to keep from crying! My name is Lewis Robert Burton Jr!
I was a fan when this album broke. Saw her live at Lupos in Rhode Island in 1997 or 98 and have been a forever fan since. My teenage crush with those gorgeous eyes and tremendous talent.
I LOVE LOVE LOVE her gaze in this vid
Brings back so many good memories of life as a teenager in the 90's 😃
And so many bad ones in my 20’s lol!! Let’s just say I can party with the best of them, and boy did I!!!
18 years old when she did this, unbelievable !!
Fiona Apple and David Bowie are my top two. Music at its best.
Margo Gadet 👏👏
SAME HERE!!! I have always considered David and Fiona to be at the top of my music hierarchy - no one else comes close to either of them except maybe Thom Yorke and Nina Simone. It’s so cool to see someone else who thinks the same!
SAME AS WELL!
it's just get's better and better. it's not fair, that one person gets to be that talented AND beautiful. just not fair.
she's like a dream
That piano is soul searching.🎹🎹🎼
One of the most prolific song writers ever!
I saw her live opening for Coldplay
She absolutely killed it. Never another than Fiona Apple
All her songs and her singing style are so deep in emotions. Her dark jazzy music transcends you into another dimension.
she's so beautiful
Inside+out-a rare combo.
oh yes!
I ABSOLUTELY loved her ! Everything about her was REAL and authentic
Bought Tidal at age 13, now 34 and still adore this beautifully, talented woman! My fav line..
"I'll be sure to stay weary of you, love.. To save the pain, of once my flame and twice my burn."
Still listening to Fiona on a regular basis...she's amazing! Such the MOOD!
Lol!
My husband played this song for me when we met 18 years ago. Probably why I still love the man. ;)
Ashley O'Neill really ? This song was not published 18 years ago
Don't conflate the RUclips publish date of October 2, 2009 (the date this version of the video first hit RUclips) with the song's actual release date of July 1, 1996. Even factoring in the two-year time difference between Ashley O'Neill's original comment and yours, Shadowboxer was quite firmly "out there" in time for her hubs to score major points with it.
wow
@@MrMkayultra He played it for me, for the first time on that date. Not when it was released.
This song is about fractionation seduction😆 its okay, I'm a narcissistic individual myself working on learning and growing as a person..
Amazing. Like two different spies listening to the same phone tap.
the grace and magnetism in her music is only comparable to her looks....wow, and what an electrifying smile!
I think I truly fell in love with Fiona apple back when I first heard this tune back in like 95, something like that. I was in my mid teens, and would have died for this woman. A true masterpiece. And that gaze is dangerous. And delicious.
I could die into that stare up from her piano. Absolutely stunning.
In all honesty I have never heard a more mature and rounded voice that actually sent shivers through my body and she’s so undeniably beautiful and I just can’t stop saying how much I love Fiona Apple🖤🖤
This Woman was a full fledged Diva Goddess at 16.
Negative Nancy
Nancy, she wasn't on heroin at fifteen when she started writing these songs. Don't be ignorant
Nancy Nicholas, ha ha ha, you're a salty one. Maybe she was on heroin in her video but not when she wrote the music, as you insinuated.
Nancy Nicholas, "it makes some good music".
Nancy Nicholas, stop swooning over me, I'm not interested
This is the music I love. Just original and genuine, not generic trash songs that can be created in 5 minutes.
this is one of the most impressive thoughtful songs i have ever heard
I never stopped listening to this album. It’s like my blood, I need it.
Beyond the most incredible talent. She has helped me through so much with her music.
The maturity of her talent was kinda miraculous. Come back, Fiona!
I'm a metalhead, but this rocks, what a work of art really beautiful
The pain of once my flame and twice my burn...
Fiona's music is a life stamp.
The only thing a computer should record is youtube comments, and that's it.
chadmish
You're not old, neither am I. I graduated then too.
How do you think they recorded this song? through a potato?
Agreed.
Lol, fiona to pantera; same here caught alot of shit as a teenager in the late 90's for that.
This woman's music, vocals, lyrics are just simply memorable!!!!
Spectacular voice and presence, I can listen to this song 100 times and never tire of it Fiona is a legend.
I remember hearing this at 18 and saying who is this girl?! Went and bought her CD and been a fan ever since. Almost 39 and still amazed at her talent.
Ugh Loved this song back in the day!!! Her voice is a magnificent force!
Adore this song
When I hear her songs I realize how people don't appreciate real music. She's a genius. She means to me so much.
Raise your hand if you're listening to this in 2020!
🤷♂️

Raising my hand!👋
that strange youtube recommendations... never heard about Fiona Apple...heard first time - i like it
25 years of Tidal, such an underrated album.
Tidal is without a doubt the best debut album ever released by an artist!
Underrated?
It had a billion nominates and songs from it WON a Grammy lol
It's won BAFTA awards, Grammys, Billboard Music Awards, and is consistently listed in the top albums of the 90's.
What exactly about that says "underrated"?
Or o you just not know what that word means? lol
When this cd came out I swear I played it over and over to the point the damn thing coulda melted!!! What an amazing album. Def defined the 90's!!!
This is so great, it always drives me to tears. I think it is time to understand that she is one of the best piano players and singers around.
I had Fiona, Alanis, and Jewel. And I was 16 and I loved everyone of them
This was the very first song I ever heard of her's...
This takes me back to my sophomore year of high school. Definitely my favorite Fiona Apple song.
