She usually is. A very intelligent human being with little or no ability to B.S. Did her own thing then, still does today with a new album out, even. If people don't like her because she's too dark, then what kind of boring crap are they listening to?
She's right after Tori Amos. Right before the Beatles & Black Sabbath section.

    Miss Apple,
I am not expecting you to ever read this comment but I write it anyway. I have been listening to you since I was 17 years old and I am now 39. Shadow boxer was the first song I heard by you and it really made an impression. Your music has seen me through a ten year battle with drug addiction and the loss of a child....sullen girl was my song for many years. And now that I am clean I still love your music and I still love you. I know you have your own demons that you battle....You wear your heart on your sleeve. I just wanted to let you know what your music has meant to me over the years and to say thank you, Fiona Apple for keeping it real and giving it class.

    [Verse 1]
Once my lover, now my friend
What a cruel thing to pretend
What a cunning way to condescend
Once my lover, and now my friend
Oh, you creep up like the clouds
And you set my soul at ease
Then you let your love abound
And you bring me to my knees
    [Pre-Chorus]
    Oh, it's evil babe
The way you let your grace enrapture me
When well you know I'd be insane
To ever let that dirty game recapture me
    [Chorus]
You made me a shadowboxer, baby
I wanna be ready for what you do
    I've been swinging around me
'Cause I don't know when you're gonna make your move
    [Instrumental break]
    [Verse 2]
    Oh, your gaze is dangerous
And you fill your space so sweet
If I let you get too close
You'll set your spell on me
So darlin', I just want to say
Just in case I don't come through
I was on to every play
    I just wanted you
    [Pre-Chorus]
Oh it's so evil, my love
The way you've no reverence to my concern
So I'll be sure to stay wary of you, love
To save the pain of once my flame and twice my burn
    [Chorus]
    So I'm a shadowboxer, baby
I wanna be ready for what you do
And I've been swinging around at nothing
I don't know when you're gonna make your move
    Yeah I'm a shadowboxer, baby
I wanna be ready for what you do
And I've been swinging around me

The Beatles were my mom’s favorite band. My family refused to let me play any of her favorite songs at her memorial. The tapestry I hung for her was even blocked off by a bord of pictures from their memories I wasn’t allowed to share. The pain is still new. She passed 5yrs ago. I’m posting this for anyone who’s had to endure playing the scapegoat in their family. I want you to know that you are far from alone with that pain in your hearts. You Are Loved.

Fiona Apple was 16/17 years old when she wrote this song and the album "Tidal".
That's absolutely astounding. When you look at the depth, emotion and soul that went into that album and consider it came from a teenage girl it's awe inspiring. Look at the music churned out these days by girls in the same age bracket and the contrast is telling. She's a special soul and an artist for the ages.

    • @robopotato4391
      @robopotato4391 7 лет назад +46

Most are written by committee these days like people like Max Martin.
No teenage girls these days write an entire album on their own (the lyrical and melodic component - very few people play every instrument). And actually they didn't really in the past either. A special talent.

The beginning of this song was taken from Janis Joplin's Kozmic Blues. I happen to be listening to Janice's song and then wanted to listen to Fiona, and would I be damned if those two weren't exactly the same! I still love Fiona, but I still wonder if she credited Janice on Shadow Boxer?

Full lyrics because the description is missing half of it:
Once my lover, now my friend
What a cruel thing to pretend
What a cunning way to condescend
Once my lover, and now my friend
Oh, you creep up like the clouds
And you set my soul at ease
Then you let your love abound
And you bring me to my knees
Oh, it's evil, babe, the way you let your grace enrapture me
When well you know I'd be insane to ever let that
    Dirty game recapture me
You made me a shadowboxer, baby
I wanna be ready for what you do
    And I've been swinging around
Cause I don't know when you're gonna make your move
    Oh, your gaze is dangerous
And you fill your space so sweet
If I let you get too close
You'll set your spell on me
So darlin' I just wanna say
Just in case I don't come through
I was on to every play
    I just wanted you
But oh, it's so evil, my love, the way you've no
    Reverence to my concern
So I'll be sure to stay wary of you, love
To save the pain of once my flame and twice my burn
    So I'm a shadowboxer, baby
I wanna be ready for what you do
    And I've been swinging around
    At nothing I don't know
When you're going to make your move
    Yeah I'm a shadowboxer, baby
I wanna be ready for what you do
    And I've been swinging around
    Cause I don't know
When you're going to make your move
    Have fun singing along!

I first listened to her when I was 11yrs old. I didn’t relate to her lyrics then but the sadness soothed me through my own. I grew up in sharp tongued, fiery touched, abuse and her art made me feel like someone out there understood. I’m 21 now, I’m still trying to escape abuse and I’ve seen my fair share of heart breaks by this point. I understand her lyrics now, and I just hope she knows how important her work is to so many people. Hoping to see her on the stage someday, I’ll have to stick around to see it

They apparently got a pre-release copy of Shadowboxer--it was a couple of weeks before I heard it anywhere else or saw the album Tidal in the record stores--which they put on while I was driving. I had to pull the car over it was so compelling.

I've tried watching interviews with him to see what he's all about as a person, but the d 3monic energy emanating from him is very strong. Makes it very difficult to sit through any of his interviews. Even though he comes off as "charming" and friendly, even making jokes and such, it's all in the eyes and facial expressions. Bad energy.

Don't conflate the RUclips publish date of October 2, 2009 (the date this version of the video first hit RUclips) with the song's actual release date of July 1, 1996. Even factoring in the two-year time difference between Ashley O'Neill's original comment and yours, Shadowboxer was quite firmly "out there" in time for her hubs to score major points with it.

It's still so raw and hard to listen to 20+ years later. All of her songs. They're so deeply personal...but I will say that she was sooo ahead of her time and she helped me put my emotions into words (with her lyrics). I didn't even know the term "shadow boxing" until this song was released and then it became my anthem against every narcissist I have ever encountered. I've since learned that when I feel the need to shadow box, that person is toxic and I have to walk away. She's helped me identify feelings into words and you can't put a price on that.
