    Lyrics:
I've been a bad bad girl
    I've been careless
    With a delicate man
And it's a sad sad world
When a girl will break a boy
    Just because she can
Don't you tell me to deny it
    I've done wrong and
    I want to
    Suffer for my sins
    I've come to you
    'Cause I need
    Guidance to be true
    And I just don't know
    Where I can begin
    What I need is
    A good defense
    'Cause I'm feelin'
    Like a criminal
    And I need
    To be redeemed
    To the one
    I've sinned against
    Because he's all
    I ever knew of love

I remember her winning an MTV award, and standing on that stage saying "this world is bull shit". I thought that was awesome. She meant the music industry, the front the stars put on for every one to see, it's all just a bunch of fake ass bull shit. She told the kids out there watching, not to try and be like them or dress like them, be yourself. Cause it's all just bull shit.
People got mad at her for that. She became my hero.

History will treat Fiona Apple very well, as it already is beginning to. She is arguably one of the best artists of the mid-to-late 90s and and early 2000s, and was creating and producing music that still manages to sound unique and distinct, almost 20 years later. Get past the feet, barely clad bodies and the writhing about on the floor in underwear in the video and focus on her songwriting, singing and the fierce bass and piano underneath this song, and it would be hard to say that anyone has been able to replicate Fiona's sound.
I was too young to experience her when she first hit the scene, but listening now, it's hard to not to be blown away. She released three amazing albums and was anything but a one-hit-wonder. She kept innovating and moving forward to her own sound and vision. Every single one of her albums were beautiful little masterpieces.
I love her. Because she is one-of-a-kind. And her music was the same.

This is weirdly captivating to me because it reminds me of many of my childhood memories, especially growing up in the 2000's and being the daughter of a college student with a lot of alt friends. Everybody knew to keep it classy around me and I rarely saw the sight of inappropriate stuff like nudity or drugs, but it was still fascinating for a small child. I've been to house parties that looked somewhat like this, down to the gross carpet, the jazzy music, the old eletronic paraphernalia and the outfits. My mother also used to have a striking similarity with Fiona back then, and watching this transports me to a time where I wasn't exactly at ease, but still felt safe. I'm happy I've found a song that encapsulated such a specific feeling and memory, Fiona is a creative genius

Despite being less explicit than a lot of popular music videos today, I feel like the rawness of Criminal makes it hit a lot harder.
The depiction of female sexuality here is really, really complex. There are moments of brazen seductiveness intercut with moments of total indifference to the camera intercut with moments of intense vulnerability. FA’s youth and her sickly thinness are both ever-present specters that suffuse the entire video, yet both are treated as merely incidental. And the way it’s filmed makes the whole thing feel simultaneously performative and deeply honest.
IMO this video is provocative in the truest sense. Not in the sense that it’s meant to be titillating, but in the sense that it’s meant to make the viewer question what exactly they are watching and how exactly they feel about it.

It represents selfishness as she craves and loves to have a lot of fun but not only with the men she loves (her boyfriend that would be) and the guilt is chasing her mind, so she needs a "good defence", she needs "to come clean", to help her before she to atone, she needs to justify what she does, and thats why she feels like a criminal, cause shes playing with the feelings of her love because she craves sex. Thats why you see her with many people in the video

    Lyrics
I've been a bad, bad girl
    I've been careless
    With a delicate man
And it's a sad, sad world
When a girl will break a boy
    Just because she can
    [Pre-Chorus]
Don't you tell me to deny it
    I've done wrong and
I want to suffer for my sins
    I've come to you cause
I need guidance to be true
And I just don't know where I can begin
    [Chorus]
What I need is a good defense
Cause I'm feeling like a criminal
And I need to be redeemed
To the one I've sinned against
Because he's all I ever knew of love
    [Verse 2]
Heaven help me for the way I am
Save me from these evil deeds
    Before I get them done
    I know tomorrow brings
    The consequence at hand
But I keep living this day
Like the next will never come
    [Pre-Chorus]
    Oh help me,
But don't tell me to deny it
    I've got to cleanse myself
    Of all these lies
Till I'm good enough for him
I've got a lot to lose
    And I'm betting high
So I'm begging you before it ends
Just tell me where to begin
    Eh
    [Chorus]
What I need is a good defense
Cause I'm feeling like a criminal
And I need to be redeemed
To the one I've sinned against
Because he's all I ever knew of love
    [Bridge]
    Let me know the way
    Before there's hell to pay
    Give me room to lay
The law and let me go
I've got to make a play
    To make my lover stay
So what would an angel say?
    The devil wants to know
What I need is a good defense
Cause I'm feeling like a criminal
And I need to be redeemed
To the one I've sinned against
Because he's all I ever knew of love
What I need is a good defense

It reminds me of old true crime shows where you see the old videos and photos of the crime scene or suspects or evidence. But instead it's like we are seeing it like its evidence being photographed before the death takes place. Because its eerie to see her so skinny and hollow. I suppose shes supposed to look sexy but somehow the angles of her body and the camera manage to catch more of the horror of it than the beauty or glamor of it. Like its intentional.

The poetry and metaphor present in these lyrics is absolutely brilliant.
As a songwriter myself, I studied the lyrics three times while watching this ingenious - though not the least bit subtle - imagery of this masterfully risqué video that gets so far close to, but - somehow, amazingly - never "crossing the line."
I read the words of a woman in private religious confession after having succumbed to the temptation of the proverbial forbidden fruit. She realizes what her deeds prove of her own self-image and the threat they create to the only committed relationship she has ever had.
    Wow.
Seeing that songwriter, vocalist, and video actress are all one-in-the-same is just absolutely mind-boggling. I am floored finding out that all those talents rest in the very same artist.

@@davidwong656 That's pretty much my point. There is definitely a realness behind Fiona Apple's (and indeed many other artists of the time) music. Here it's presented in a Hollywood fashion, but Fiona rightfully pointed out that one should not take what's presented as real. The fact that nowadays all artists "keep it real" and get millions on their side just shows that it's being played into the game. Fake is the new real.
