I love the mechanics of this song. It really sways like you're on a boat. The video perfectly fits the atmosphere of the song, and not just the sailor reference. This is art.

I hadn't noticed the nautical feel here. What struck me as feeling nautical is Jonathan and the drum intro to Left Alone. I don't know why.

@Kai McCook Intriguing! Maybe there's a way to test the theory: does it explain something that can't otherwise be explained? Here's something that I don't know how to explain: why is it O'Sailor like an Irish name, not "O sailor" or "Oh, sailor"?

@liquidbleach2207 for "musician" I'm not so sure, but in the "singer songwriter" category she really is a huge candidate. Very few people (like Kate Bush, Joni Mitchell, and PJ Harvey) could actually rival her. And even then her lyrics might win against them all.

I'll always admire her for the speech she gave when accepting an award-- she spoke to her young fans and she said "You're important-- you think we're important (meaning celebrities) but we aren't. You're important." Meaning 'in your lives you count don't lose sight of that-- thinking about fame or whatever." It was pretty touching. And I remember some commentators acting like she was crazy. They were half-wits, whose only subject was who's famous and who isn't.

    I'm undecided about you again
Mightn't be right that you're not here
    It's double-sided, 'cause I ruined it all
But also saved myself by never believing you, dear
Everything good I deem too good to be true
Everything else is just a bore
Everything I have to look forward to
Has a pretty painful and very imposing before
O' sailor, why'd you do it?
    What'd you do that for?
    Saying there's nothing to it
And then letting it go by the boards
O' sailor, why'd you do it?
    What'd you do that for?
    Saying there's nothing to it
And then letting it go by the boards
I have, too, been playing with fifty-two cards
Just 'cause I play so far from my vest
Whatever I've got, I've got no reason to guard
What could I do but spend my best?
O' sailor, why'd you do it?
    What'd you do that for?
    Saying there's nothing to it
And then letting it go by the boards
O' sailor, why'd you do it?
    What'd you do that for?
    Saying there's nothing to it
And then letting it go by the boards
And after waiting, fighting patiently on my knees
All the other stuff tired itself out first, and not me
And in its wake, appeared the touch and call
    Of a different breed
One who set to get me wise, and got me there
    And then, got me
Oh, what a thing, to know what could be instead
Oh, what a blessed curse; to see
It took the agenda from its place in my bed
Made a merry paramour of me
O' sailor, why'd you do it?
    What'd you do that for?
    Saying there's nothing to it
And then letting it go by the boards
O' sailor, why'd you do it?
    What'd you do that for?
Giving me eyes to view it
As it goes by the boards
O' sailor, why'd you do it?
    What'd you do that for?
    Saying there's nothing to it
And then letting it go by the boards
O' sailor, why'd you do it?
    What'd you do that for?
    Saying there's nothing to it
And then letting it go by the boards
O' sailor, why'd you do it?
    What'd you do that for?
Giving me eyes to view it
As it goes by the boards
O' sailor, why'd you do it?

I already loved this song, and now I fully feel and understand it, too. Some artists are truly gifted at expressing exactly our emotions with every word and sound. They don't just do 4-chord songs with lyrics everybody can instantly relate to because they're super vague and general, that's what a greedy pop singer does. Feelings are complex, it's never that straightforward, you will not necessarily relate until you go through something like it. Fiona has experienced complex, deep, lasting pain, you can tell just by listening that she wrote the whole song. That's a true artist.

Brian Kehew For me, this is one of her songs referring most directly to her rape... He basically destroyed her life, throwing everything that she then was or could have become, "by the boards", making her feel like she's missing something now... This is such a superb and touching song!

    • @liteflightify

@@spaceboy2095 how lazy of an assumption. Even Fiona has said that trauma is such an old pain it's boring. Literally nothing in those lyrics insinuates rape. Please dive deeper.

I wouldn't say it flopped. It was voted the best album of 2005, and got a great deal of respect in the indie community. Just because a song isn't number one, or an album doesn't sell a million copies doesn't mean it goes unnoticed. But I don't think it would kill a few people to take notice of Fiona.
