If you converted the photo to an embroidery file format (.pes) already, then yes. If not, you will need to use software to convert the photo. The PE535 can't use .jpg, .bmp, .png, .svg, or other image files.
I do have software from Brother that I use, but I also purchase/download designs frequently. It's often easier to use a premade design than spend the time making my own. Yes, you just need to put the design on a USB and transfer it over to your machine. As long as your Mac puts it in .PES file, you should have no issues with transfer.

Lastly, if you have one of the top-of-the-line Brother embroidery machines, your machine may have some capabilities to help (like My Design Center, for example.)
