Just bought a bottle of new Amsterdam. Noticed the florals citrus up front, but with a peppery finish ( drank straight to taste it), not bad , but like Gilbeys which is bottled in Kentucky.
There is a tasmanian gin from Lark distillery that uses the local pepperberry. which is pretty unique. Also there are a lot more out there from Australia too.
Love Bombay Sapphire. Nice juniper, but get a lot of other flavors/scents going on with it. Goes great with good quality tonic. I'm personally not a fan of the American gins.
I'm not a big fan of liquor in general. But I really like gin. After trying maybe 20 different kinds of gin, I like the Bombay sapphire the best. But the new Amsterdam has to be my second favorite. very good price point and never disappoints.
I absolutely agree. Bombay Sapphire is really great with a good quality light tonic - especially on a Sunday mid-morning brunch on the front nine, just before heading out to the links. :)
I now only use freeze-chilled Bombay Sapphire, 1/2 tsp olive juice and 2 stuffed olives for my Martini's. Got tired of having a 750ml btl of vermouth hanging around for a tsp per drink. I have drank Bombay straight as a sipping gin. I will pick up a Bombay East next booze run. Want to see what ' Common Man Cocktails ' is talking about. Cheers
I prefer tanqueray for the pure juniper highlights. Are there any of these American gins with fewer flower notes and better juniper? I have not found them.
I don't know, the entire point of American gin from what I can gather is to make it not like London Dry. Otherwise, why bother trying to have your own "category"
-Brooklyn gin, Junipero, Cutwater’s Old Grove uses the local Torrey pine as the forward herb (Juniper behind it but it’s still a pine) and they also have a barrel rested version, St. George’s Terroir is much more pine forward as well, Portland Dry Gin 33, Juniper Jones, Denver Dry Gin, “Damn. Good. Gin.”, Booth’s Gin... there are hundreds. Lots of gins made in America and their styles vary from genever to something like Aviation which is very floral (lots of lavender). Though many American gins are not juniper forward like classic gins, that is simply the result of experimentation following a craft distillery explosion (figuratively speaking) where many were looking for something with less juniper. Many in the US dislike gin BECAUSE of the juniper (I disagree with them) so it began to take a back seat to other herbs and citrus.
We always have a dry gin on hand, not only because it frequently is Martini time but also because gin tropicals are fun. Also recently picked up a bottle of Malfy & can recommend--great forward lemon flavor & plays well with mixers.
yeah, most of the folks I hang around with don't want a martini...mainly because we party from 7PM to 3AM and you won't make it that far with martinis :)
I've been a Bombay Sapphire gin drinker and decided to try other types. Nolets is one of my favorites now with it's floral flavor along with New Amsterdam gin. My choice of which gin I drink comes with mood. I love all the different types of gins so I never rate which is best.
New Amsterdam is what i tried for the first time drinking gin not bad . I will have to try the London dry gins next didn't even like gin before but gave it a try in cocktails good stuff .
I've tried Gordon's, Beefeater, Tanqueray all solid Gins, but recently Malfy con Limone is my favorite. Has a smooth taste and evenly balanced. What do you think? Great video, enjoyed the detail breakdown of Gin. Gracias Amigo.
Having been a big fan of Bombay Sapphire and not a big spirits drinker I have now moved to Drumshanbo Gunpowder Gin that I bought last year, (because I liked the bottle). This stuff rocks when its warm out. Bombay for my guests, Gunpowder for me! Sorry I can't describe it like a pro but it works for me!
Hardshore is a small batch gin made in my state that is amazing, the botanicals they chose go great together. One of the only gins I don’t mind on it’s own. Distilled in Portland, Maine. Idk how wide spread it is, but I highly recommend checking out the distilling scene up here in Maine. There’s a few phenomenal Vodka’s made here as well
Hi Derrick. Just going back through some of your excellent videos and ran across this gin video. I'm a big fan of gin, Bombay being one of my favorites. Plymouth is also a great gin. And I have tried Amsterdam and Nolets….which I find a little to strong on the Juniper. But the one that I can not stand is Deaths Door!! Man, that smells like PineSol and tastes like what I think the pinesol would taste like. I tried for 2 years to get all my gin drinkers to help me finish the bottle.....finally had to clean the sink drain with it to make room for some more Bombay and Plymouth. :) But the bottle looks good on the shelf around the top of my bar......great conversational item. :) Keep up the good work!
hahah, wow, yeah, I had no problem with most of those -- many did have a pinesol thing for a bit but when you drink them for awhile that goes away. But you gotta become one with the gin. So you think Amsterdam is too juniper heavy??
As someone who isn't really into Gin I have to agree with the New Amsterdam recommendation. I tried it after you recommended it in an episode a while ago and I really liked it. I also got a chance to try Ransom Old Tom Gin once and from what I remember I liked it.
Common Man Cocktails Summer time is here so it should be a good time to check them out! Theyre an interesting company that also makes something called Uncle Val's Pepper gin which I havent tried yet but sounds very cool
Ok I'm late to this post. Gin journey just started I guess. My question is about gin and tonic. I like beefeater. The wife does not. You named alot of cocktails but what works with the standard gin fevertree or Q and lime that she may like?
You missed out on Spanish gin which is a big part of the cocktail culture there. You should also look into Spanish vermouths. There is also Japanese gin now with Roku and Nikka. I've had Roku and it's amazing. Citrusy and then you get this spicy bite frok.the sancho peppers.
Very informative! After watching this I feel I know more about gin! I think gin is my favorite spirit and bought several - mostly London dry. But have been encountering more American gins and enjoy them as well.I need to find an Old Tom gin. I don’t think I’ve had this yet. Any recommendations for a first timer who likes the London Drys and G&T’s?
Ransom is a pretty good brand and usually findable, but if not, I've not found one I didn't enjoy yet. Not that I've had a massive selection of course :) Tanqueray makes one too, which is good.
I'm a huge gin fan, If I could recommend a couple to try. Blackwoods 60% is lovely for a G&T and my current favourite is one of your American gins - Leopolds. It's wonderfully citrusy and makes a really refreshing summer drink.
I need to try New Amsterdam and an Old Tom gin! It's time for me to give gin another and a better chance (sorry, Seagram's). Thanks for the awesome video! It's pretty much exactly what I needed. I'll have to check out some more of your gin cocktail videos too. Also I had never seen a dark Old Tom gin, interesting.
Common Man Cocktails thank you, I'll give that one a try, I do like Bombay sapphire with other cocktails but id prefer something less dry and strong for a sweet pink lady cocktail
Any reason, in your opinion, do some people suggest Tanqueray and Bombay pair better with lime and tonic and Hendricks and Bulldog pair better with cucumber and tonic, other than personal preference ?
Well, Hendrick's is infused with cucumber, so it pairs with cucumber out of convenience. Bulldog, it's really not going to pair any more/less with cucumber from what I can tell. Bombay and Tanq tend to be a bit more bright juniper, so that lime and tonic distracts a bit more. Cucumber and heavy juniper don't balance as well, I think it's easier for the cucumber to get lost.
which drinks would you say fit a gin like Three Rivers Manchester? It might be you don't know it, it's goat oats in it and it's real soft with a full flavour
It's kinda sad that I can't taste the pine or juniper in any kind of gin anymore. I used to taste it and it was pronounced. Any way to fix that or a way to pump up the flavor?
1:09 - Thank you for acknowledging the joke that I would've made had you let the, uh, Bols drop. There is a distillery in Haines, Alaska (Port Chilkoot Distillery), about 50 or so miles from Ketchikan, where I live, that makes "50 Fathoms" gin. It's, uh, not my taste, but many tourists love the heck out of it.
OK, I am exhausted after watching this video. You talk super fast, lots of great information. Have you ever tried the Dictador Colombian Aged Gin? I believe it is aged in used rum casks. I would like to know your thoughts if you have tried it.
most people won't stick around for more than a few minutes, gotta get it done before they get impatient :) No, never heard of the gin, let alone tasted it!
I really like these videos. But, the bottles on the counter tens to blend in with the background-making it harder to focus on what you are trying to display. Please take that into consideration when doing future videos pretty please 😁.
I don't title video's with brands for a number of reasons, the primary one being that it makes viewers think that's the only option (when the option is all brands across a spirit) and...well, I don't give out free advertising :)
sorry, not much I can do about that -- maybe our newer videos (in 4k) make it better, I dunno. I never noticed the issue (and nobody has ever told me this before now)
Nice piece of work though I have some quibbles about your history. In Newark, NJ, we have a local distillery called All Points West. He makes his own alcohol (he doesn't buy medical grade and infuse it). It's too good to use in a Martini....maybe a gin and tonic is ok.
I have the one that comes in the blue bottle called London Dry Gin and it say PeeRage on the bottle. I have not seen it on youtube. been looking it up and can't find a review on it. maybe I should make a review about it. This Gin that I am drinking is so good.
Kē makes an excellent gin that, based on your description, might fall under the "Plymouth-style" category. It's the perfect balance of juniper, citrus, and botanicals-with each flavour fighting to be the dominant profile, no one wins but you ;)
Im just starting and I do think that I have bombay at work. I really want to experiment. Do you have any thoughts for me? I really want to try making anything that I come across. New hobby........
not sure what you want for thoughts, thoughts on what? What spirit to buy? what cocktails to make? What spirit to use in cocktails? Or, something entirely different?
Saw a mysterious looking gin at a state store a few months ago here in PA called Monkey 47. Apparently it's been around for a bit, but I'd never heard much at all about it. Curious to know if you, or anyone you know, has tried the stuff, and if it's worth the prescribed $50 for a pint.
It's fine, but it's not a london dry. My biggest issue with it that it costs $10+ more than things like beefeater which work perfectly fine in a cocktail. Make a gin & tonic with all the gin's and you'll probably lose a lot of the nuances of those gins and your drink will taste "like gin" but not with all the benefits of the extra $10. You really have to focus an expensive gin on a few select cocktails that highlight it best.
never heard of them...but probably, Ungava's website is pretty bad, doesn't tell you anything really about their gin. Victoria at least said it had a lot of citrus peel on the nose which has become the signature to an American gin.
Thanks. I've been seeing them in my local liquor store for a while now, but have been hesitant to try them since they are more expensive than my regular brands like Beefeater or Bombay. I don't mind paying more for good product, but don't like to do so to test a product that I may or may not like.
Derrick. why is Bulldog placed at the most back of your Gin roster? It's the best right sir? Oh wait there's Aviation too! Proudly American artisan gin.
No Italian gin? Italy has been making juniper spirits for over a thousand years, and the distinctive profiles of the Italian gins (Malfy is my personal favorite), most of which are far less bitter than London dry, make them a unique catagory, as well as an excellent pour for people who don't think they like gin.
nope, never seen an Italian gin anywhere in the store, no brands have ever reached out to me, and I've never had any exposure into such a thing. So, it may exist, but they're doing a shitty job marketing :)
@@cmcocktails I'm surprised. I don't know where you live, but I've been able to find it most places across the United States. I've put a link below to malfy Gin website, which as I stated is my favorite, but there are several others. Do yourself a favor and ask your liquor store to get you a bottle. www.malfygin.com/?GGL_|_BRD_|_Broad_|_Core_|_UFS_|_Malfy_|_Homepage&+malfy&gclsrc=aw.ds&&gclid=CjwKCAjwydP5BRBREiwA-qrCGnj0uZ5eBuWnY_Mc59R7pK_3wG-2DWgsMYI1FFg2CqZ8Xw8nIF_kqxoC35kQAvD_BwE
I'm in New Hampshire, one cannot simply walk in and ask our favorite liquor store for a bottle as it's a State run system, you get what you get from what I understand. You cannot simply special order stuff here.
@@cmcocktails That sucks llama balls, eh? I have a friend in PA that tells me the same thing. Maybe some day when you're out of state and you happen to think of it... Anyway, just found your channel and have watched a few more vids. Good stuff. I really enjoyed the dirty little secret vids. Keep up the good work.
Yah PA is the same, true. I can run over the border but I gotta pay taxes find a good place, etc. and, then give them all free video time while having to go out of the way? Lol, they should just send me their products! :-)
Mainly because I was talking about core spirits for a cocktail, sloe gin is a liqueur and really isn't a gin. You wouldn't use sloe gin instead of gin when "gin" is called for in a drink...or it would be destroyed :)
it's expensive and there are tons of available options, can't cover them all. But, every time I make a video that highlights a specific series of spirits I get the "what about ____ ? Why no _____?" so I'm used to it. Everyone cannot believe how I didn't mention _their_ favorite gin lol
@@cmcocktails lol true. I thought it'd be fitting for a style of gin vid, sweeter, cucumberier.. but it is pricy therefor Bulldog is usually the main choice. Also, thanks for the vids man, they're great. :D
ah, okay, that was not clear. I don't consider sloe gin a style of gin because it tends to be more of a liqueur. To me, a gin variation / style would be a product with gin as a base that's still 40% ABV. Most liqueurs land in the 15% to 35% ABV, I believe most slow gin is under 27%. When you add flavorings and sugars to a product, it tends to be more of a liqueur than a style.
Can’t get over how many people on here like Bombay. Bombay is awful. It’s only popular cause their marketing is so good. It’s a terrible gin. So many other gins that are way better with a very similar botanical list. Try Sipsmith, Highclere Castle or Haymans. Plymouth solid too but has an earthy flavor, so different than a traditional London Dry.
Made I drink you might like. I it named it "The Drunk Lemon" : 1 oz. tequila 2 oz. lemon vodka 2 oz. gin 4-6 oz. tonic water I built it in the glass but I bet it'd go well stirred or shaken , then topped with the tonic water. Hope you get to try it out or even put it on the show tell me what you think. Cheers!🥃
sorry... but this seems terrible... Too much alcohol, no sweet / sour part. There is a reason why tequila usually isn't mixed with tonic. Please try to make a cocktail with a sweet and or a sour part / some bitters, vermouth, liquer, etc.
No, that's not true at all. Gin is flavored neutral grain spirit. Vodka is neutral grain spirit cut with water to get to 40 ABV. Gin's infusions are soaked at high distillation proof in order to get proper infusion prior to cutting it with water. If you cut it with water first the infusion will be more muted and will take double the length of time to infuse.
I love hin but I don't like listening to you. you talk too much you're too animated and you get on my nerves As I thonk you do many others on this site. .Bombay and Bombay sapphire taste entirely different. .Please just state the facts Hendrick's gin is not anything like a real gin. I mean really rose hips and cucumber
I like your comment but your misspellings and insane amount of type-o's get on my nerves. If you can't take the time to read your comments for accuracy then I won't take the time to read them.
troll comments are irritating too, if you have nothing good to say, just don't say anything. But, I have to deal with you, so now you get to deal with me :-)
Have been meaning to do some research into just this for a while . . . . and kept getting lazy. Thanks for having my back :)
haha, no problem, I'm just hunting for the viewers views by trying to give them what they wanna see.
Good to see you here Jessie! The home-made and the store-bought spirits worlds collide! Deliciously.
Man, that was packed with info. Thank you. New subscriber.
Thanks! :)
Also there are a lot more out there from Australia too.
sounds cool, we don't have access to many of those around here.
Love Bombay Sapphire. Nice juniper, but get a lot of other flavors/scents going on with it. Goes great with good quality tonic. I'm personally not a fan of the American gins.
have you had their East variety?

What's a gin tropical? Is that the drink with gin and passionfruit, orange, and lemon or lime juice?
I've been a Bombay Sapphire gin drinker and decided to try other types. Nolets is one of my favorites now with it's floral flavor along with New Amsterdam gin. My choice of which gin I drink comes with mood. I love all the different types of gins so I never rate which is best.

As someone who isn't really into Gin I have to agree with the New Amsterdam recommendation. I tried it after you recommended it in an episode a while ago and I really liked it. I also got a chance to try Ransom Old Tom Gin once and from what I remember I liked it.

Have you heard of The Botanist Islay Dry Gin? Just bought a bottle for my husband. What are your thoughts?
I have, yes. But I've not actually had it before, it's not available around here and they've never sent me any to review.
One of my favorites. Been to the distillery in Scotland. Perfect gin drank neat....a rare find

I'm a huge gin fan, If I could recommend a couple to try. Blackwoods 60% is lovely for a G&T and my current favourite is one of your American gins - Leopolds. It's wonderfully citrusy and makes a really refreshing summer drink.
and I've never seen or heard of either of those! lol
I don't know if you'd be able to get Blackwoods over there but Leopold's are based in Colorado and it's available online. It's about $40 usd.

great, let me know what else you need, I need more views :) So, I need more video's people need to see!
Now I just tried Plymouth gin at a bar. Was not used to how bold it is. I always feel that Bombay is more balanced.
What did the gin say at card game contest?
Have you tried Roku Gin? It's from Suntory in Japan, and is made with six Japanese botanicals, including cherry blossoms and yuzu rind.
nope, never heard of it.
Yes I see that in Tesco/Sainsbury’s.
Dry fly of my favourite all around. New Amsterdam is the one I buy most.
What Gin would you recommend for a pink lady cocktail? I used Bombay sapphire and thought it tasted to bitter for a pink lady
I use whatever gin I have for my gin cocktails, but if bombay was bitter, perhaps an American gin like New Amsterdam gin
Common Man Cocktails thank you, I'll give that one a try, I do like Bombay sapphire with other cocktails but id prefer something less dry and strong for a sweet pink lady cocktail
My favorite gin is the European 37.5% the original Bombay London dry gin
Any reason, in your opinion, do some people suggest Tanqueray and Bombay pair better with lime and tonic and Hendricks and Bulldog pair better with cucumber and tonic, other than personal preference ?

Thanks, no this was just a long promo for it :)
First bought bulldog tbh because the cool bottle and name but it was actually a great gin and at a good price.
Something I don't like about gin. It might be the juniper. Heard Ransom Old Tom may have a lesser taste of this.

Or, something entirely different?
what spirits to buy. Bombay safari is already on my list. but what else can I buy that doesn't have to strong a tast. it has to appeal to women to.
Saw a mysterious looking gin at a state store a few months ago here in PA called Monkey 47. Apparently it's been around for a bit, but I'd never heard much at all about it. Curious to know if you, or anyone you know, has tried the stuff, and if it's worth the prescribed $50 for a pint.
no, I've never heard of it, but $50 is about average for a smaller gin distillery.
You have to try four pillars rare gin . You will not be disappointed.
What are your thoughts on Hendrick's gin?
It's fine, but it's not a london dry. My biggest issue with it that it costs $10+ more than things like beefeater which work perfectly fine in a cocktail. Make a gin & tonic with all the gin's and you'll probably lose a lot of the nuances of those gins and your drink will taste "like gin" but not with all the benefits of the extra $10. You really have to focus an expensive gin on a few select cocktails that highlight it best.
Bols is better pronounced like bowls, though ballz jenever does sound delicious
Would Canadian gins like Ungava or Victoria fall into the American gin category?
never heard of them...but probably, Ungava's website is pretty bad, doesn't tell you anything really about their gin. Victoria at least said it had a lot of citrus peel on the nose which has become the signature to an American gin.
Thanks. I've been seeing them in my local liquor store for a while now, but have been hesitant to try them since they are more expensive than my regular brands like Beefeater or Bombay. I don't mind paying more for good product, but don't like to do so to test a product that I may or may not like.
thank you for making good content!
thank you for watching it and sharing it with everyone you know :)
My favorite gin is Bivrost and Hendricks
Derrick. why is Bulldog placed at the most back of your Gin roster? It's the best right sir? Oh wait there's Aviation too! Proudly American artisan gin.
because my "roster" was mainly ordered by century :)
Now I know chronologically. :) BTW have you tried Sipsmith by Raffles Gin?

Do you have a preference of regular-strength Plymouth gin vs navy-strength Plymouth gin?
no, because I've never had navy strength :)
Great vid👍
imho I think old Tom is the best to drink neat.
very interesting stuff
thanks!
No, thank you
i love this channel
Thanks!
I'm a big fan of Citadelle.
Thank you
American Gin? Aviator. Owned by Ryan Reynolds (Dead Pool) and some other actors. Don't drink it neat but good in martinis. Nicely crafted
Why not talk about sloe gin as well?
Mainly because I was talking about core spirits for a cocktail, sloe gin is a liqueur and really isn't a gin. You wouldn't use sloe gin instead of gin when "gin" is called for in a drink...or it would be destroyed :)
wait....so what is Sloe Gin???
a sloe berry liqueur
Plymouth gin for me.
Boodles is a nice London Dry
the correct term for American gin is distilled gin
all gin is distilled.....
Lydons is 😊
No Hendricks?
what about it?
@@cmcocktails it's delish and deserves praise.
it's expensive and there are tons of available options, can't cover them all.
Like the info -- but, no close ups. Please. Oh,..Gin & Tonics are not boring, they're awesome.
everyone has their likes and dislikes...I just don't care :)
Sloe gin ?
yes, not sure what you're asking a question about, can you expand on that?
Well, i heard about that category (sloe gin), I was just suggesting that that should also be included in the video.
ah, okay, that was not clear.
I have sipsmith, highclere and plymouth.... we've got reviews of at least the first two on the channel.
Made I drink you might like. I it named it "The Drunk Lemon" :
1 oz. tequila
2 oz. lemon vodka
2 oz. gin
4-6 oz. tonic water
I built it in the glass but I bet it'd go well stirred or shaken , then topped with the tonic water.
Bombay Sapphire, Tanqueray, and just a little ice.... Nothing else needed.
,Sorry meant to say I love gin not him.
You just need to state thr facts...gin is 1st flavored vodka.
You need to get Your facts straight on Gin.
oh, you're a gin distiller? Have you distilled it before? Do you have a recipe? I do.
Need facts, keeping watching the channel!
What up notification crew
sup prophet
get to the fkin point
I love hin but I don't like listening to you. you talk too much you're too animated and you get on my nerves
As I thonk you do many others on this site. .Bombay and Bombay sapphire taste entirely different. .Please just state the facts Hendrick's gin is not anything like a real gin. I mean really rose hips and cucumber
I like your comment but your misspellings and insane amount of type-o's get on my nerves. If you can't take the time to read your comments for accuracy then I won't take the time to read them.
I like gin, but you, sir, you are irritable in the extreme.
troll comments are irritating too, if you have nothing good to say, just don't say anything. But, I have to deal with you, so now you get to deal with me :-)
