    The primary cause of the 'hangover effect' comes from the metabolism of ethanol to acetaldehyde. It's the acetaldehyde that makes you feel like crap the next day. Acetaldehyde is next metabolized into acetic acid which you excrete. Fun fact: The drug disulfiram (Antabuse), which is used to treat alcohol dependence, inhibits the enzyme which converts acetaldehyde into acetic acid. As a result, you get a build up of acetaldehyde quickly (very little gets a chance to be converted to acetic acid). The quick build up of acetaldehyde gives an instant hangover and they are less likely to drink. :)

    • @cmcocktails
      @cmcocktails  5 лет назад

      Oh, as far as I knew they treat alcohol dependencies with AA and hopeful wishes! If feel like an alcoholic that wants to drink would just not take any drugs that would make it harder for them to not drink.

      @@cmcocktails I think when it is used it is administered under supervision. Another fun fact you might find interesting is that woman have less enzyme activity for the enzyme (alcohol dehydrogenase) that converts ethanol into acetaldehyde than men. This is likely why woman have a lower tolerance for alcohol. SCIENCE!! :)

    Great video. One point about whisky/whiskey; it starts off as clear spirt. In high quality whisky products, all the coloring will be from the barrel (although adding a caramel coloring is not uncommon). I find I can drink a good deal of non-chill filtered, no color added, single malt Scotch with minimal hangover.
    Also, lots water and a few capsules of activated charcoal when I’ve really gone too far seems to help a great deal.

    It's a different drunk with different drinks as well. I've got a science wiz friend who says it's because of the aging process, chemicals absorbed from the wood barrels. My experience agrees with aging being the determining factor but I can't say for sure.
    I'd describe it as clear/unaged alcohol giving me a drunk where I'm more relaxed and almost in an observational mode. Good for thinking without distraction. Aged drinks make me more impulsive and less alert. Good for shutting out the world for a few hours or restarting a conversation with drunk texting.

      It's more about the congeners. A night of Jameson's will leave me feeling like I kissed a truck but a night of cheap clear Rum, not so much. And even that is interesting; the Jameson's gets in my head the next day while the rum likes to mess with the stomach.

    Alcohol dilates your blood vessels and the sugar increases your pulse. Ever notice your hands and feet getting warm/hot when you drink?
    As you sober up your blood vessels constrict. But your body may not be done processing the sugars. So insulin and Blood pressure are all still high. So Your blood feels like molasses being forced through a coffee stir stick.
    Sugar acts as a diuretic and also depletes electrolytes. Sodium depletion can give you a feeling of exhaustion and brain fog.

    One thing about hydration is beer has water and so does a bubbly highball because of the ice (as long as you don’t pound it). That’s my explanation for why the heavy first then the light alcohol works for me, although alcohol is still coming in, I am also taking in water and if i add a glass of water in between as well, then at least I won’t have dehydration hangover on top of whatever else i might get.

    I find ppl get hangovers more from clear spirits, and i think it all goes back to young ppl who don’t actually like alcohol or appreciate a well made alcohol, so they think the objective is to pound it. They start with vodka because it makes juice fun, but then they are lubed enough to enjoy real flavor in tequila (although still “fake”) and gin (although still “fake”) and so they get messed up. But when you meet an experienced drinker they will be choosey about exactly what vodka, tequila and gin.

    • @cmcocktails

      health studies shows you may be able to perspire 10% of the alcohol, not really enough to make any special difference. Of course, that won't impact your hangover, you aren't going to sweet out toxins enough to make a difference. Drink less to start with is the only way.

Woke up dry mouth, so had two glasses of water while waiting for the coffee to finish brewing. Bang !!! A full on drunk. So fucken wasted, I could not make a coffee without spilling it everywhere. No deserved hang-over, just very tired after 3 hours of stumbling around. I like my clear booze neat or with flat ingredients, but will indulge in the colored booze or fizzy drinks with much respect. The beer before liquor works like this: as your stomach becomes fuller with liquid or food it will take longer for you to feel that shot you just drank. This coupled with the feeling of bloatedness that carbonated drinks like beer give you and volume of liquid, will make you want to slow down if your drinking it. Shots are easy to down in faster time. So physiology is as much a factor as poor decision making. I can recall doing shots and 'feeling the same' after 15 min when I should wait at least 30 to feel its full effects. If I had a beer, I would not be drinking it in the same timeframe as a shot unless I was a frat boy.

      well, you don't have to limit your bar to clear liquids, it's not really your problem, especially considering many fans of whiskey are out there. Many alcohols will bring in additional sugar but, here in the US anyway, you don't have to put ingredients or nutrition facts on the bottle. I have some rum brands sugar contents but only because they ship to Sweden and a few online sites have their sugar content as they have to declare it, apparently, when selling there.

      No, I don't think it is. I mean, is the whole point of smoking to get lung cancer? :) Just because there is a cause and effect doesn't mean it's the core purpose.
      I'm sure everyone has their own reason, I like the flavor combinations and trying new stuff, much of the same reasons I like to order banana splits at all the ice cream places I go -- I want to know how they do it, what makes it so great (when folks say "best ever") and what flavor combinations they put together.
      It's the same reason I go to different restaurants and order something I've ordered elsewhere, to experience the representation of that specific food/dish.
      For cocktails I also add in the historical aspects (I'm making a drink that was drank by my great great great grandfather's generation, etc.) To see if it holds up to what we design today.
      Or, to loosen up when interacting with folks I don't know well and need something to chat about or share experiences with (same with beer and wine). I'm not doing it because I like to be buzzed. As a matter of fact, when that starts to occur I slow down; everything in moderation.
      Then there are people that down a bottle of vodka on a nightly basis. I think that's the wrong way to go about it.

    I would argue that it's mostly the methanol that's a factor in a hangover. Most home distillers know that fruit wines have the most methanol in them, followed by grains, and then sugar washes with the least amount. Hard liquor should not give you as bad a hangover as beer and wine. If it does, it could contain an amount of heads and/or tails in it.....something that most home distillers strive to avoid. Stick to vodkas without too much sugary mixes, and you'll be fine.

    • @cmcocktails
      @cmcocktails  2 года назад

      But you just contradicted yourself a bit in your own argument... if methanol is the biggest factor, why would we care about sugary vodka cocktails? :)
      I think there is also strong evidence that alcohol, depriving the body of crucial vitamins with a healthy dose of sugar deprivation (after a long night of sugar intake) has an impact on the pain of a hangover. Which is why most "remedies" suggest things like Gatorade, Vitamin supplements (masked as "hangover pills") and water. There is no doubt a reason they work for a lot of people (not in all cases, but they can at least make you feel slightly better).
      Methanol is definitely bad, arguably the worse for you physically -- but I've had far worse headaches from a day of drinking beer than a day of drinking gins for instance. I know if you're going to cheapen your product by cutting it too shallow and having more head's and tails is a bad idea, but you can also taste some of that poor quality, which may help you in avoiding it. But I'd guess those that get the most sick aren't consuming too much methanol... I think it's consuming too much...EVERYTHING and not hydrating that's their biggest downfall.

    • @theghostofsw6276
      @theghostofsw6276 2 года назад

      @@cmcocktails No contradiction....you said yourself that sugars can be a "contributing factor". That was the point, methanol first...sugars second. I guess I should've said...a hangover from beer and wine is most likely methanol as the main culprit (due to the impossibility of removing it from the product), while a hangover from a hard liquor is probably more to do from the mix, heads/tails in the product, or the other factors you mentioned. I'm certain someone will fare much better if they were to drink the clean liquor (even with a sugary mix) over a methanol containing product....I prefer the "sugar" hangover myself over the methanol...lol. I stick to vodka mixed with "5 Alive citrus" nowadays, and if I'm drinking whiskey I'll shoot it straight with a water chase. Cheers!

    • @cmcocktails
      @cmcocktails  2 года назад +1

      Ah, yeah, I don't know much about methanol and beer, my father is a pretty serious homebrewer but I've never really taken it to the molecular level as much as just the phases of the build.
      I know that I fair much better with gin and mezcal/tequila over a night of drinking than brown spirits or beer. Beer I tend to have more of a stomach ache or screaming intestines no matter how I balance it out. With clear spirits I can pretty much balance 2:1 water with cocktail (even with sugar) and wake up fine.
      But, beer...my god, the worst of hangovers after 10 hours of drinking. I wasn't even drunk when I went to bed, but boy did my body hate me the next day.

      I don't buy that a single shot of gold strike is what gave you a headache, I'm sure there were many variables that contributed to it, could be a salty dinner, could be less water than normal, could be you were a bit run down the day prior, etc.

    In my expression its all about water. If you have exercised then drink it will hit you, if you drink on an empty stomach you get hit harder. And yes a larger person has higher tallerance because their body contains more fat and water. I myself control how much i drink and never get drunk, and the liquor before beer always works for my little friends and big friends, fat friends and thin friends, and i do believe chemistry has something to do with it, not just decision making. Furthermore, if carbonation makes things worse and liquor first makes things worse and alcohol leads to more alcohol, then according to your hypothesis then i would drink higher proof liquor first and then NOT move onto beer but continue because shots effect decision making WAY more than a beer, and then if i started with carbonation then I would have carbonation in me either way, regardless of order the effect is the same. So beer before or after, by your logic makes no difference. AND by your logic liquor would lead to worse decision making than beer, and yet you say that liquor before beer brings greater results due to decision making. So it works for the same reason it shouldn’t?

    I cant agree with your statement about fat/lean people. You are not pumping your alcohol straight into bloodstream. You swallow it. And your body absorbs alcohol through your stomach. If you eat fatty foods before drinking, you stomach is full of various fats, and food in general, that delays alcohol absorption, thus you can drink more, before getting wasted. And I think the same goes for people with excess fat. They just don't need to fill their stomach with food, to get the same effect.

    Here is some science for you: bigger (Taller, fatter, whatever) people have more blood. Therefore the same amount of alcohol will not raise their blood alcohol level as much as a thin, smaller person, because the percentage of alcohol in their blood will be less. Therefore bigger people get drunk slower.

    • @cmcocktails
      @cmcocktails  5 лет назад

      That is flawed science ;-) The problem comes down to how alcohol and fat works. Fill a shot glass with alcohol, then add some butter to it...what happens? I'll tell you so you can avoid the science here, it floats.
      Because alcohol and fat don't work well together, they push each other away. This is also why you can layer a lot of 80proof spirits on top of Irish cream.
      You can have double the blood if you want, but if that blood is also full of alcohol then you'll have the drunk feeling and get there "faster." Because muscle absorbs alcohol and metabolizes it faster. People that are dense with muscle will get drunk less fast than an obese person.
      That's not say they both can't get drunk or blow a percentage that's going to have you in jail. But the speed and "light headed" drunk feeling for heavier people is going to be easier. Of course, a muscle bound 5'6" person vs. an obese 6'7 person goes a bit beyond that, because of the sheer difference in density overall. But, two people "of equal stature" will see heavy folks get drunk faster. It's just science, and science you can perform at home with product!

    • @digitalranger4259
      @digitalranger4259 5 лет назад

      @@cmcocktails I'm not saying fat isn't a factor. But just sheer numbers, if one ounce of alcohol is added to one pint of blood and one quart of blood, which is going to have the higher percentage? A 150 lb man and a 200lb man, both similar builds with same body fat percentage, but the 200 lb man is larger than the 150 lb man, the same amount of alcohol will not affect them equally, and the larger man will get drunk slower.

    • @digitalranger4259
      @digitalranger4259 5 лет назад

      And you are pretty much making my point for me. A fatter person, IE larger person, will absorb less alcohol over a given time. A more muscular person, IE larger, will have more blood by nature circulating through their system, and won't, for a given amount, get drunk as fast as a smaller person. Same weight, but fat versus muscular? Muscular gets there quicker, fat guy stays there longer.

    • @cmcocktails
      @cmcocktails  5 лет назад

      No, a fat person of equivalent stature will not. Sure Andre the giant vs me, but a muscle head vs someone I’d similar height will win if they have less fat

      @cmcocktails  5 лет назад

      If there is a 150 lbs man at "fighting weight" (working out, good build, 15% body fat) and a 200 lbs man that_should_ be 150 lbs but is way overweight he's going to have like a 45% body fat -- he's going to get drunk faster than his "mirror image healthy" version of himself even with more blood.

    It all comes down to water end of story. You can drink a gallon of jail juice made in a toilet bowl with bread yeast, kool-aid-and table sugar. As long as you finish your night off with a liter of water and a few ibuprofen you will be straight in the morning.

    • @cmcocktails
      @cmcocktails  5 лет назад +1

      well, outside of the fact that when you've drank all that "jail juice" and your liver is screaming at you, sucking down a few ibuprofen does double damage ;-)
      Water is part of the story, a major part. But it won't solve everything. If you drink that much water before going to bed you'll be up a bunch during the night (or you pee yourself). However, if you mix water between drinks you'll be more evenly distributed and have a much easier time getting rest (which is no doubt going to help you in the long run).
      You may also want to drink water before drinking if you had a very salty dinner before that (say a dinner with friends before going out drinking harder)

      nope, it's never that easy. A gold rum is often a white rum that has not been filtered (because filter removes flavor). A gold tequila, may also just be a white and reposado tequila blended into a single bottle.
      Jose Cuervo Gold -- yeah, stay away, but that's not because it's gold, that's because it's 51% tequila and 49% garbage.
      Most flavor comes through congeners and too many of those can lead to a hangover if you don't take proper precautions (like hydration). Moderation is key, if you're just going to consume alcohol non-stop for 8 hours, well, you deserve the result.

    • @cmcocktails
      @cmcocktails  3 года назад

      So...that... ha. Bacardi Gold is just a young rum (like bacardi white but not filtered). It doesn't dictate the quality nor the age... ironically, it is just a marketing term. A drink that calls for "gold rum" can also just use "aged rum" or "silver rum" and get the same impact.
      One of the key differences in some rums involves how much sugar is added after to "smooth it out" or how much caramel color is used to make it look "older."
      For more on aged rums, I got a video on that ruclips.net/video/CC42DLbY5iw/видео.html
      Bacardi, in all my blind tastings, often wins or comes in the top. So... it may be cheap, but I've not found any good reason to not use it in a drink.

In high quality whisky products, all the coloring will be from the barrel (although adding a caramel coloring is not uncommon). I find I can drink a good deal of non-chill filtered, no color added, single malt Scotch with minimal hangover.
    Also, lots water and a few capsules of activated charcoal when I’ve really gone too far seems to help a great deal.

      yep, all distilled spirits are clear in their birth given the vapors do not bring over any color when they're separated from the base material, even if it's a beer wort more like a whiskey.
      Even absinthe is soaked with herbs to give it the green color (if it's not artificially colored).
      All that being said, the hangover qualities of a spirit are often not to do with color but the components that make them what they are and how much of the congeners were allowed to remain from the vapors into the final product.
