We started collecting back in early 2021. As a kid i kindda bought to play but never really collected base set or base 2 cards… i really miss the original pokemon characters and how a regular Holo/reverse was a big hit…. Great video!!!
I’d also argue that most are priced out of high grade vintage and sets like team up now. So chasing and grading modern SV or crown alts is a better balance than telling your partner you just spent 5k on a psa 10 base set card that can be purchased for $10 in played
This. I bought a mint 9 slab for 100 instead of a 9.5 for 500 for this exact reason. The mint 9 is mint mint so my wallet has 400 plus to invest elsewhere!
If someone didn’t grow up and live in the 90s as a kid, then vintage cards will mean less to them. They won’t have that nostalgia effect because they didn’t open it when they were a kid

Its cheaper because they printed 13 billion in two years. And only printed 9 billion for like 10 years. If you have a vintage collection you’ll be good. Just dont be greedy like half the people are. No one will buy it.
Especially when you don't collect to game with the cards, what kind of cards you gravitate towards is entirely up to preference, rather than strategical thinking, wouldn't you say?
You missed an important force that is driving up female full art trainers - the entry of Chinese buyers. Several months ago, the first simplified Chinese Pokemon set was released, and that got a LOT of rich people into the hobby. Some people have been spending hundreds of thousands of dollars buying up English and Japanese cards.
I grew up in the diamond & pearl age but didn't get involved until the black & white era which actually had the first ever full art trainer cards not XY era but yeah I do agree that the XY era full art trainers didn't have the appeal to how they are today because they were still experimenting. I'm a little upset that now the cards I really wanted are now so expensive but I'm also glad because finally these cards are getting appreciated but hopefully the pokemon company can start doing more protagonist trainer cards like how they did with Gloria, Rosa, Red and Leaf.

I do agree. Modern has some awesome card styles, full art trainers, and art in general. But it is true, that modern cards rise faster like with baseball being the Mike trout prospect card selling for 3 million
I have to disagree with your logic "Because people didn't grow up with base set, they don't have the same desire for it". The first thing to understand with any collectible, is you start collecting with the cheap and available stuff. It's the same with comics, coins, etc. When you have more funds and a bigger understanding of the market, you dig a little deeper. In this case, it's going back through the sets, to get that low pop vintage. Pokemon is vintage AND modern, people need to stop this perceived battle between the two.
I prefer low pop anything doesn’t have to fall into vintage per say I think xy and certain sun and moon cards that are in the double digits of tens are nicer then most vintage cards
100% agree with you. I didn't collect during Black and White, XY era etc. But now after collecting modern for about a year, I find myself getting much more interested in those eras, as well as back to base set. Everyone starts off with modern because it's discussed, highlighted, and cheaper in general. As you collect though, eventually you'll turn your gaze to vintage because of the scarcity and it being more elusive.
Exactly, thats why comic books and muscle cars from the 1960’s are worthless. People are literally collecting sports cards from 100 years ago. This dude is clueless.

Look at the pop report for vintage Cgc 10's there's like 2 or 3 max! Just wait for people to start selling thier modern cards! Vintage is here to stay and price will gradually go up
While I agree with everything I would have also added the factor of hype into the mix. The market for sun and moon for instance has been driven hard by youtubers and other influencers. I think we will see a big dip once everyone isnt chasing the same cards.
cheaper prices to rip/buy singles, so many larger sets now which brings in a ton of variety to choose from like you said, and modern cards usually are in pretty good condition which make it attractive for people to buy and grade cards for either collecting or reselling, and of course great artwork.
Overpopulation of modern cards will be their detriment long term. For example the coveted “MoonBreon” has a current PSA Pop of 8,550 cards, 6,600 of which are PSA 10. Over printing will cause the card value to plummet when the next chase card is out and the current hype has died
Amen. There is no surer bet. Current "modern" will be vintage, yet in abundance. All these people saying "vintage sucks" will be so sad when their modern is vintage and not only will it suck, it will be plentiful.
Yes it's 10x+ times the pop not even counting sealed product which will double that eventually, prices will be cut in half. Vintage will simply go up...
@@cafe100mph6 There is so much sealed modern product being hoarded right now. Just look at all the redditors who have entire rooms filled with tins, trainier boxes, packs and booster boxes all thinking they have the next first edition base set on their hands.

I love your channel. A couple years ago after watching your video I actually bought 3 Ultra Prism Lillie cards and 3 Lisia cards. While buying a Lisia card, I bought a Latias and Latios card by luck. I bought all these raw and sent them to PSA for grading. Got 2 10s on Lillie and 2 10s on Lisia and 10 on Latias and Latios. One of the PSA 10 Lillie cards I have is in French and there are only 4 PSA 10s. Now the Latias and Latios card is worth around $3k. I think it can pass $5k this year. Again, thank you for your great content! Your channel is one of the very few I follow.
I think the art difference is arbitrary - there is some GORGEOUS art in the OG Team Rocket Set, Gym Challenge sets, and so on, just smaller. Imagine the full art cards on half the card page, and it wouldn’t be nearly so popular. You could take some art from old sets and make them full art, and people would go nuts. To me, good art is good art - some full arts are not worth it to me, and some regular or promo holos are WAY more valuable to me. Because the art is better in my eyes - it just doesn’t take up the whole page.
I’d argue modern is more pumped and dumped than vintage. It’s easier to flip. Collect what you want. The hobby was shaken up in 2020. You are pumping modern for instance right now as everything from SwSh and sv have been cooling off for months except for 4 cards. Moonbreon, gengar vmax, giratina v. And a few others. Also team up is not modern any more. It’s subjective but a set 5 years old can’t be called modern. Team up is vintage imo
The thing is the same thing is going to be said for sw/sh in a couple years too. Depending where you are it is super popular, I live in Cali and every time Sw/sh gets dropped around me for retail it always disappears, so people do want these cards. But we’ll see anything can happen. Also scarlet and violet is extremely slept, the arts on some of those cards are beautiful.
I still find no appeal in full art trainers and they are always a bit of disappointment when i pull them. Only type of secret rare cards that disappoint me more than FA trainers are Gold Item cards, they always seem to me as such a waste of potential. This could have been some insane badass gold pokemon and instead it is gold umbrella... sad :/
Wait, this is about pricing? I thought we were gonna talk about a power creep in the newer sets. Like how the 2004 Chaos Deck would get it's day ruined by a 2022 traptrix starter deck LMAO
hey man i just recently got into collecting, and ive gotta say you have one of the best channels for this kind of content. please keep up the good work
its not that moderns more popular than vintage rather its that vintage has already had its spike whilst modern has not. when you are buying vintage you are buying it at its high so theirs less room for growth but when your buying modern your buying it at its bottom which means it has a ton of room for growth.
What's strange to me is how non graded modern cards can still be a lot more expensive than non graded non 1st edition vintage cards. In the eyes of the collector is a non graded non 1st edition vintage card not appealing if it looks like a NM card? I just can't justify paying hundreds on a card that I can get for so much less if I buy from a reputable seller for a NM non graded card.
I used to hustle kids on the play ground for cards from sets power keepers and platinum arceus. Platinum arceus has just come out and all the kids were trying to collect the whole subset. I’m lucky to have gotten 4 of them

@@cafe100mph6 And once Pokemon hits a down period, who do you think will sell first? It is inevitable and will be fun to watch.
@@cafe100mph6 There is so much sealed modern product being hoarded right now. Just look at all the redditors who have entire rooms filled with tins, trainier boxes, packs and booster boxes all thinking they have the next first edition base set on their hands.
Probably 4x more graded will be coming in the next 5 years too
Gotta catch them all tho
I don't get why modern Pokemon cards are so popular, I want the old style cards with the cosmos holo pattern instead of these bland gx/vmax/ex card from the past 8 years. Why don't they do the cosmos holo's anymore? Its by far the best type of holo in Pokemon....
Grind modern, hold vintage
Jake bought up all the trainers while telling you not to buy and then pumped them after he bought. No other explanation
I’m joking. I have no idea but it’s probably true.
I grew up with ancient origins, colliding fates (im mad I didn’t pay more attention look at prices now)
The Modern Cards will never be as expensive as the Hallow No Simbol Charzar XD
I’d argue modern is more pumped and dumped than vintage. It’s easier to flip. Collect what you want. The hobby was shaken up in 2020. You are pumping modern for instance right now as everything from SwSh and sv have been cooling off for months except for 4 cards. Moonbreon, gengar vmax, giratina v. And a few others. Also team up is not modern any more. It’s subjective but a set 5 years old can’t be called modern. Team up is vintage imo
The thing is the same thing is going to be said for sw/sh in a couple years too. Depending where you are it is super popular, I live in Cali and every time
Sw/sh gets dropped around me for retail it always disappears, so people do want these cards. But we’ll see anything can happen. Also scarlet and violet is extremely slept, the arts on some of those cards are beautiful.
Where can I find the background jingle? Doo, da, doot, doot, doot, da, doo, doo, da, doo! Shit is fire.
I still find no appeal in full art trainers and they are always a bit of disappointment when i pull them. Only type of secret rare cards that disappoint me more than FA trainers are Gold Item cards, they always seem to me as such a waste of potential. This could have been some insane badass gold pokemon and instead it is gold umbrella... sad :/
Collect what you want. I'm going to collect the BLACK and WHITE Era full art trainers.
Wait, this is about pricing? I thought we were gonna talk about a power creep in the newer sets. Like how the 2004 Chaos Deck would get it's day ruined by a 2022 traptrix starter deck LMAO
hey man i just recently got into collecting, and ive gotta say you have one of the best channels for this kind of content. please keep up the good work
It’s almost always been two separate markets
its not that moderns more popular than vintage rather its that vintage has already had its spike whilst modern has not. when you are buying vintage you are buying it at its high so theirs less room for growth but when your buying modern your buying it at its bottom which means it has a ton of room for growth.
I don’t understand why Charizard is one of the most prized pokemon cards.
the appeal for the new generation is mostly not the wotc era anymore
Dang jake, turn down your brightness. Looks like you’re turning into an apparition
Got a 1st edition Base set psa 9 Mewtwo for sale
It’s simply modern cards are much more obtainable than vintage.
I used to hustle kids on the play ground for cards from sets power keepers and platinum arceus. Platinum arceus has just come out and all the kids were trying to collect the whole subset. I’m lucky to have gotten 4 of them
Good times back then

Random note: went to my LGS and found sun and moon era alolan raichu box. Only cost me $35!
What packs did it have?
@@redheart2058 SM Burning shadows, XY Roaring Skies, and I can’t see the third one behind the promo (kinda looks like maybe SM Guardians Rising)
They flipped it but compared to market price it’s still probably decent.
@@DweepAndDestwoy he was doing some spring cleaning and found a handful of old things, even a case of topps lol
Modern cards just look better. Combine that with the affordability of opening product and that's the reason.
There's way more vintage out there than team up and cosmic
call smpratte he's crying
muh fUnDaMeNtAlS
You will see ;)
Bro had to make a video like this after I got a great deal on some base set cards 😪
It's his opinion. Nothing wrong with your base set cards. Collect what you love and never let anyone influence you
Geez, I dont even want to listen to this guy while he repeats Pokemon Card over and over...dam dude
It’s so damn annoying
