It's interesting looking at this through the lens of a TCG player since I've slowed down as a collector chasing hits. Seeing pulls like Octillery, Galarian Weezing, Metal Saucer, Cinccino , Capture Energy, etc. are great since they're pretty important to building some decks. The gameplay element has made pack opening super fun for me.
Jake, I gotta thank you ! I just started my Pokémon collection this month (as an adult), and your channel really guided me through it ! I'm starting as an adult because as a kid we were too poor to afford Pokémon cards. Your channel perfectly walked me through all the products and prices and helped me find the absolute best value for my money. NO DOUBT best Pokémon channel on RUclips. I love that your not a hype beast, and very professional. Thanks again Jake!
I like the idea of the video but also I think this is not the greatest aproach for a new collector, not taking even care at the holos, not enjoying the art of the commons... I mean, not everything needs to be about the return of the money in terms of hits and market value. If I have to recommend someone how to collect, Ill say: pick your favourite creatures, then enjoy the art, the cards, then... the rest it's secondary. But of course that's my point of view :).
This isn't supposed to be a complete new collector expierience, we've seen many of these cards/packs opened before. Even when skipping the things you mentioned the video was already half an hour long. Many longtime viewers won't have the retention to sit for longer just to look at holos and commons imo. This series is for those with limited budget to see what they can expect from $100 in good deals with diverse and thrifty products, from there they can make a decision on what to buy (singles/packs/tins/bb/etc)
I agree with you. Problem is Jake is always thinking about the investment and financial returns. It's why he has videos about cards as investment and putting the price next to his "hits". This approach is teaching new comers to think about investments first and foremost which is pretty toxic.
i totally agree i hate it when people disrespect holos, yes they don't really have monetary value but neither do most v cards, not everything in a collection is about how much something is worth. i have binders full of holos and i enjoy looking through those just as much as i love looking at my full arts and v max cards.
This is a great idea...can't wait for the rest of the series ...this is literally pretty much exactly how I started back collecting a couple years back ....I now have a decent sized collection
that was the first thing that come to my mind when i seen the title If you were planning on opening the seal then you need to sned mooney on a mean of protecting the cards would chew up the value and doing this on a black firday in the states is like using a cheat code on gta lost city
Not too long ago my mother threw away my pokemon cards while moving stuff from my room to a storage room (she WILL throw away anything in sight thats made of paper/cardboard) and my cards were no exception. I sat on my bed and internally screamed for like 2 minutes after thinking about how much my collection was worth. Now im gonna start an entirely new collection from scratch. Wish me luck.
I'm actually joining you on this journey, I took out my 2nd ES booster box, pricing it at 110 dollars. I got some amazing pulls, Two gold rares, four Vmax, I got the rainbow rare glaceon VMAX as well as other great stuff. Feels good starting from scratch in a way.
Hey Jake, this is an amazing idea. It gives people who are on a budget a good idea on how to start their collection and it shows off just what kinds of things you can get for really decent prices when starting. Out thanks for the great video! Love you man.
Love this!!! I just got back into Pokémon TCG since Gen 1. As a kid this was too expensive of a hobby. Now as an adult and a father it’s something I can budget for. My son told be he wanted to get into Pokémon TCG a month ago. Since the first pack opening it was so nostalgic. So decided to get into it. RN we are focused on celebration set. Great video and hoping this becomes a series to where I can follow. Keep up the good work Jake!!!
Im so glad you started this series, following along with you. I bought the japanese 25th anniversary collection box and got some amazing pulls, focusing on brilliant stars and base set for next month, thank you for the inspiration!
Love this video concept. I think it's refreshing to look at collecting through the eyes of a new collector with a limited budget. Definitely palette cleansing since it can become easy to get desensitized once you start collecting, only looking for the big pulls.
Excited for this series of videos Jake. It’s too easy to focus on only the big cards and not appreciate you can build a beautiful collection on a budget.
tbh spending the $100 on just ripping packs is increadbily silly if you actually want to build a collection. Some sure but the vast amount should be used for picking up singles imo
Yeah I completely agree. I personally learned I only want to buy holos, reverse holos, or Ultra Rare holos sometimes. Buying packs is just a waste of money for me so I just buy singles of my favorites.
I just started getting back into the hobby and building a channel about my Pokemon card journey. I'm not ready to spend a ton of money on it, yet. This video is SUPER helpful to me as I build my collection and my cannel, so Thank you!
Especially in the spring/summer you should go to garage sales and try to spend part of this budget on lots and undervalued collections you can find there! With how low pull rates are on most sets I’ve become very picky about what I buy sealed, especially if I were a new collector I’d be looking for lots on places like Facebook Marketplace, flea markets, etc.
I really enjoyed watching this. I know it’s about new collectors but it reminded me how fun Pokémon is. Opening them just itself is enjoyable, it’s like being a little kid on Christmas Day with all the presents. Plus you might get money out of it! I love the idea of variety of products, but I also love myself some booster boxes. Great vid
This series is a great idea, definitely will help me out as a collector as I'm on a budget collecting Pokemon cards. I wish I could get that many packs for my money here in Australia.
That was great Jake!! I think you got some great cards and awesome tins to add to the collection, so for $100 to start a new collection you got a lot and a bunch of different sets to experience cards from!! I think it would be cool maybe one month you you take us shopping online with you buying singles cards for the new collection (collectors cache is great for online vintage cards and more) just a thought, but I’m looking forward to this series!
Great video! I like the idea of the series cause i just started collecting again. I would love to see celebrations in here too cause i love the set. Keep up the good work!
new to collecting in general and decided to get into pokemon cards now that the hype has settled down a little bit. after watching your vids and reading the comments my approach has been to choose some sets I think are cool, buy a box for each to get the thrill of opening packs and then hunt the singles to complete it - has been very fun so far for me
Love the video, it reminds me of my first few pages of my collection as well. And now One Year later I got me a pretty good collection. Can't wait for TWO years of collecting Pokemon cards... ...and beyond.
I love this concept!! Keep it up, and it might be my second favorite series after the community portfolio. You know what would be cool tho? If you busted open all the products, sorted all the packs by set, and opened all the packs of each set in a row. Something about jumping from base SwSh to rebel clash to darkness ablaze back to base SwSh was aggravating my ocd lol great work tho!!
Jake on January 1st - 100 dollars and a Hidden Fates tin. Jake on January 2nd - The whole scream series psa 10, 2 Trophy Kangaskhan, and 1 illustrator Pikachu.
Great video Jake! A 100.00 budget is a pretty good investment amount; breaking it down to 25.00 per week (4wks/month), and about 3.57 per day. Skipping a cup of coffee/drink a day will easily cover this project. I am going to give this a try and use 120.00/month to cover the 13% sales tax (and/or shipping).
Dude thank you so much for doing this. This is exactly what I started doing weeks ago and I've got one super rare so far, nothing special I don't think. I hope 100 bucks a month is enough for a decent collection
This will be an awesome series, I think it would be cool if you could collaborate with someone where you both do the challenge and see who made the best purchases at the end of the year
Love the video thx for the neat idea with spending just $100. Doesn’t feel like that amount of money would get you much but you really stretched it out grabbing up all the Black Friday tins and promo boxes. Well done!
Great series! Please keep it up every month 100$ and then a review of the collection and how it grows would be really great! Looking forward to the next Video! :)
Since I'm in the EU, shipping usually elevated the price on singles so I haven't really ordered of of tcg player. I'm sure some local game stores are selling singles as well though so I think I'll be looking into that
Literally just started collecting cards around when celebrations was getting a lot of hype, your videos help me so much on which ones to invest in and which ones to collect! Currently going to go for champions path next. I was trying to collect shining fates but lowkey I've noticed it's very saturated right now (charizard population) and I love charizards so I hope I can collect more cards and maybe even get my first graded card this next year!

I love how 13:55 he commits into the role of being a new collector and knowing nothing about Pokemon lol .. can't wait to see the rest of these videos through the year 👍👍
Gotta be extremely lucky to find things that cheap. The 3 tins would cost us $100 in Australia. We don't get savings anywhere near that level here. How much was the binder? How much was the Costco membership?
I wish you set a weekly/fortnightly budget, only because I already love this series and waiting a whole month between videos is going to be painful Haha! Worth it though...
Hi Jake! Good video on how to get started. I just got into the hobby after over 20 years with collecting Celebrations. I am struggling with how to manage and showcase/store the collection though and how to navigate trading to complete a collection. It's very different getting into it as an adult vs when we were children on the schoolyard. Can you continue a budget beginner series with showcase, storage, and trading tips as well? Thanks!
Its so funny hearing jake say “new collection” and “budget” with all the 1000s of dollars of Poncho Pikachus in the background 🤣
FR lol
I just love that Jake works towards helping get new people into the hobby. We need more content like this!
@@CameronLeNguyen Yeh it is a very cool concept

Everyday I pray to god you bring this series back. It’s what the people need
We beg and we pray and we suffer everyday just like Eminem
Maybe do it with only scarlet and silver (like only 2023 sets)…but yes. Please do it.
A little dramatic lol but I agree!

All about just finding your favorite Pokemon!
This is for people who work but can't spend endlessly so they have a budget. This is actually pretty cool
As a new collector, I get really happy seeing even reverse holos!
Should include the taxes and shipping with everything. That’s what limits people on a budget
that is tax in and shipped.
