- We have seen over 20 years of Pokemon Cards and a lot of different variations. I'll do my best in this video to provide a history of the different tiers of cards that have been released since the Base Set.
I will discuss Shining Pokemon, Pokemon ex, Pokemon Prime, Pokemon Lv X, Pokemon EX, Mega EX, BREAK, Pokemon GX, Tag Team GX, Pokemon V, VMAX, and Amazing Rares.
A lot of what I will talk about in this video has to do with the mechanics of the TCG as well as some commentary on the artistic treatment of these different cards!

you brought this 34 yr old who is getting back into collecting and playing (with sword and shield) after 20 years away up to speed perfectly! thank you!
As a 32 year old man myself and I am happy to hear I have helped!
Crazy. I’m 33 and I can agree. I was always wondering what all the types were
Rqa’
Yes! 32yrs here but same situation. It’s come along way since Base-Rocket lol
33 here and I'm in the exact same boat. Stopped collecting after the silver gold era. This video was PERFECT for catching me up to speed!
This needs like 50 million views. After being away for around 20 years this caught me right up to speed. Thanks a ton for making this video.
WOW thank you! The support means a lot to me and I am just happy to know this was helpful.
I think the most alienating thing about the pokemon TCG has always been the power creep and the tiers. A new player looks at a "ultra mega ex, gx tag team snorlax mewtwo" or whatever and their just like "wtf even is that?"
So thanks for this.
Super happy this helps lower those barriers to entry. It’s definitely a hobby subject to escalation over time and it takes some effort to figure out what’s going on!
Hey! I'm a starter collector who wanted to know what all of this meant lol. Anyways, you don't know how helpful this video was to me! Seriously. Thank you for making it when no one did. I can understand them better now. Again, thanks!
So glad you found it helpful! Train on my friend!
@@BugCatcherCarter Haha, will do! Keep making awesome videos Carter.
Play the TCG or the games
This has to be one of the coolest walkthroughs on RUclips. Clear and concise, and gets us up to speed when looking at pokemon cards.
WOW what a kind comment! Thank you so so much for the support.
As a returning collector trying to learn how to actually play the game, with some no nonsense charisma.
Thanks ma dude! Will be back
So happy you enjoyed the content and thank you for the kind comment! I’m bringing the channel back in full force. Hope you stick around.
my son, aged 9, is just getting into Pokemon. 1st pack of Vivid Vottage, pulled a Amazing Rare Jirachi. He's hooked.
Love those amazing Rares! Congrats to the young big catcher!
Pushing 40 years old, and rekindling into this game which I haven't played since High School ('99), so I can introduce my nephew & niece to the awesome world of Pokémon. These cards are just too cool, at any age.
Incredibly helpful video, with excellent explanation. 10/10!! Thank you so much for taking the time to make it.
Enjoy a well-deserved new subscriber to your channel - cheers!
Good old days!
ive wondered about this forever i didnt even know Mega EX was just an evolved form of an EX and i needed to learn about V MAX as well Thank You SO much i watched the whole thing thanks!! keep it up!
same dude
I appreciate you supporting the channel more than you know! I’ll have lots of new content coming soon!
bro you know nothing of Pokemon? Mega evolution was a mechanic introduced in generation 6 X&Y
My father's friend gave me and my brothers a whole ton of pokemon cards, and we have quite a bit of of pokemon like delta magicarp, electrivire x, and others. Your video brought my attention to a lot of other things I never new existed! Thanks for sharing :)
Brings me great joy to know the vid was helpful! Hope you enjoy the channel! New content always coming soon.
I really think the coolest cards were the Pokémon LEGEND cards where you had to combine two halves or more of a card to get one super powerful Pokémon. They weren’t exactly practical in gameplay, but man were they cool.
Finally really useful. I am returning to collecting Pokemon cards since I was a kid more than 12+ years ago.... All I remember were EX and X cards now there's different EX, X,GX, V,V max, tag team, full arts... what the hell lol
Thanks so much for watching!
That’s how I thought. Back when I was in elementary in 2013-14, Exs were very popular and common. Level X’s are a bit obscure but still popular. Now I’m hearing about Vmaxs and Vunions wtf
Same man. I stopped collecting cards since 2016 and last time I collected, we had Break, EX, full arts, reverse hollows, and etc.
As someone who doesn’t play or follow the tcg side of Pokémon. This video was very informative for me and it helped me understand the different tiers. Keep up the good work. May this channel grow more.
This means so much to me thank you! I want to make more videos soon about some of the upcoming sets! Thanks for the motivation.
Thanks for the support and well wishes. I’ll have a lot more content coming soon! I’m back!
Little bonus: Amazing Rare cards’ use of multiple energy types is a callback to the Shining cards of the Neo era!
Wow thanks a bunch for making this video! I’ve been searching for a video to explain all of this and you helped me understand all of the details of cards, TY!!!
So glad i could help! Thanks so much for the support!
Thanks so much for this. This really helped inform me about all the formats I didn’t know (I only knew EX, GX, and Tag Team).
Btw the one other thing I’d say that stood out about tag team pokemon was their GX attack. It had an initial pretty powerful effect but they all had a similar extra clause if you had extra energy attached
Recently found you and am loving your videos especially this one. Keep up the great work and quality, can’t wait to catch up with your content. Also, maybe it’s cause I have a similar sized collection but, love the set up you have behind you. Can’t wait to see it grow along with mine
after playing magic for 30 years and playing pokemon as a kid, i recently started getting into it again with the anticipated release of 151 (i am a huge sucker for nostalgia bait). I was overwhelmed by all the different versions of pokemon, but you got me right into it and up to speed with that video. Thank you!
Appreciate you. New to this and you were very easy to understand and I could feel the enthusiasm about the ones you liked more.
I randomly came across this video after jumping between vids trying to find a simple explanation for these new tiers.
I too got out of pokemon after the WOTC sets. Coming back all these new descriptions of cards boggled my mind.
This video was fantastic. What a great job laying down the info for me on that roadmap.
Thank you so much.
Epic vid.
This is such a kind comment. Thank you so much for watching! Hopefully I can make more videos on this channel that will be helpful to you.
I don't usually comment on RUclips videos, but greetings from Brazil, mate. Just the video I was looking for. I have recently gotten back into following the Pokemon TCG scene, so this really helped me catch up in no time. I appreciate it. Keep up the good work!
Thank you friend! Can’t believe the influence of this channel is global! I hope I can make more good content soon.
im getting back into playing since like first gen, this video is gold and explained everything perfectly for me to start playing again right away, thanks bro!
Wow what a nice comment! Glad I can help. I need to do a follow up to this vid to explain a few of the most recently revealed game mechanics.
This is excellent! You're hilarious and I learned a ton. Appreciated how you made connections between the various mechanics
Huge thumbs up! Thanks so very much for explaining this. I think the new Scarlet and Violet generation 'ex' has been the best iteration of OP cards in history. It's as if they're at least finally starting to comprehend the importance of balance, pacing, evolution. The new 'ex' can come in basics or evolutions. But they all stay true to their designation evolutions according to the Pokédex. No more insane inconsistencies. And they also seem much more balanced out. They aren't like GX cards that have a one-time super. I don't know if you can tell any other differences between GX and the current ex. But I think what we have now is the most significant improvement this TCG has ever had compared to any previous generation.
well presented with a clear timeline and concise content. well done dude. You also made it very clear in the video what you do and do not know. Classy. Keep it up
wow, one of the most important videos I've ever seen! I'm not kidding. A few months ago I got back into the trading card game after 15 years and was absolutely confused as to which abbreviation meant what. Thank you!
Always been more into deckbuilding/battling than collecting and am just getting back into it after years away. (I dropped out at Johto Journeys/Gold and Silver so my knowledge was limited to just the first 2 gens) came back and was completely lost at all the new stuff so thanks for this extremely helpful. Thank you bug catcher Carter see you out on rt.1.
Yoooo I had a very similar situation. I was hoping there were others out there who could use the info! Thanks for watching
This was so helpful! Your explanations are clear and easy to follow!
GOD BLESS. Thanks for the support! It means a lot.
Wonderful video. Thank you for this. Please more about the Pokemon history. Also the rap at the end was awesome
This is a perfect video explaining all the newer tiers of pokemon cards as time went on. I stopped when there was the team rocket and gym leader pokemon cards. You explained them at the right level when I stopped. Cuz when I downloaded this pokemon trading card game app, it showed me all these newer series cards and I was like "what the hell did I miss all these years? What's this card? Why the hell do these cards have like 260 HP (since the highest old was like 130 HP or something) What does this skill mean, etc.?" Thank you so much for taking the time for us old schoolers to get caught up. Lol
Thanks for the kind comment and it’s good to know you found this information valuable. With how long the game has been around, there is a LOT to learn and it can be a bit overwhelming for newcomers.
After being away since the 1st generation pokemon, im starting to collect again im glad pokemon has not fallen off. Thanx for getting me up to speed a video most def needed.
very interesting and helpful - good job on this overview!!!
Great video. Started collecting in 1999. Stopped later on and started again in 2009. Stopped again after a couple of years and started once again now. Didn't have a clue what each symbol meant. Thanks a lot
Very similar to me! Thanks for watching and supporting so much!
As a returning collector (kanto/johto days), I really appreciate the no-nonsense breakdown. Thanks a lot!
Ps: that shining gyrados you showed at the start…I have that card! First card I ever got. I always thought it was a fake, but I held onto it because of the memories. And I do miss the fossil edition decks - I have a near complete kanto set, first edition, minus mew and charizard.
That gyrados is unreal! I am legit jealous! THANKS FOR THE SUPPORT AND KIND WORDS
Great video. Thanks for making it👍
No problem! More videos coming soon!
Awesome video! Thanks for describing them all
Thanks for the kind comment and for supporting the channel!
Thank you so much for making this! I got out around the same time as you with the gym leaders. When I heard there were basic Pokémon I was used to evolving like the ex Pokémon, I knew I needed a video like this to get me up to date with mechanics before playing with my kids
i just feel that grass types need a little boost. on the tcgo, ive noticed that the grass special energy isnt really all that useful as not many people focus around special affects when people already counter it with pokemon center lady anyway. also most if not all grass types dont have any resistance which is a bummer because grass types arnt all that strong on their own without boosts and help from other cards. i play a grass type only deck which doubles as a evo deck (no special cards like EX's or tag teams) and even then, theres only a few grass types out there that can really hold there own even when u get a bad start. either than that u highly relying on hope to be able to get an early game boost and kick to doing damage and evolving b4 the opponent puts down enough energy and special energy and tools and cards used to just 1 shot alot of grass types. metal type decks are starting to be used now a fair amount so metal types are resistant to grass and grass is weak to fire. also the grass types are only strong against water and dark which dark is hardly used rn and water isnt really used rn either unless people are expecting a high wave of players using fire type decks because everyone loves charizard and has to use it. (so typical of people these days. using the same old things and liking what everyone else likes instead of making their own choice and opinions)
It is very hard to keep track of for sure! Glad this helped you catch up!
What a perfect video man.. Exactly what I was looking for.. Greetings from Brazil..
I really am happy to hear this video has helped you! More coming soon
Great video! I'm a year late from your upload but all of this is "super effective". Grew up with the simple original cards and watching how these cards evolved surprised me. This helped me understand what to seek for in card collecting.
true bro. i remember collecting the old ones back around in 2008 to like 2012 and i remember a ton of cards that didnt feel like or at the time, didnt have a full evo aka a stage 2 evo that made it stronger. now theres a ton of pokemon and cards in fact theres i believe 870 odd pokemon in total now and many of those i didnt even no exsisted as well as some evo's that i never knew about when i just knew their basic pokemon versions.
I am very glad this helped! Thank you so much for watching and for the support.
I started falling behind around sun and moon, this is so helpful omg thx so much for making thisssss
I don't usually comment, but man.. thank you so much for the in-depth explanations. Very cool
EXACTLY the video I needed to figure out what the game looks like ever since I stopped playing back in EX series haha. Might benefit from an explanation of VStar in the description 👍
Excellent treatment of the subject. Thanks!
Broo every so often a God send video will come around and explain the needed explanations for the people who need it, your a blessing dude.
I've been following pokemon since forever and already know about all this but I still love watching these videos
This helped me realize my Shining Noctowl is a treasure I should have my eye on.
This is such a helpful video! Thanks!
Thank you so much for watching!
Thank you for this video! I’ve been scouring RUclips for this info and couldn’t find it til now
Oh wow so GLAD i was able to help. THANKS for the watch!
Thank you for the video. I am new to Pokemon playing/collecting so this really helps.
Wish you good luck
Thank you so much for sharing this chronology of the PKM TCG. I'm coming back with this hobby after stopping it in the Gym Challenge collection. So, I was completely lost with nowadays cards.
I feel you on this. I was in the same boat! Thank you for the kind comment!
I needed this so much. Ty
Wow,this video definitely deserve more like and views!🤩🤩😍
Yooooo thank you! Took a while to make this so always feels good to get some validation. 🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼
Very helpful, thank you! 🙏🏼
Absolutely informative content sir thanks
Thanks! I got a Butterfree VMAX yesterday, and wondered what was special about it
That’s a HUGE butterfree. Glad you liked the video friend!
@@BugCatcherCarter yeah he a *big boi*
Great video. Helped me out as I am starting to get into the Pokemon TCG.
So glad! Thanks for the watch!
Same, 20 years later I’m getting back into the TCG. Found out modern board games are great so figured I’d add the TCG into my game library
Just to say one that he forgot about, Prism Star cards were introduced in Sun and Moon Ultra Prism, and they worked like regular cards except that they would go in the Lost Zone (off the playmat) instead of the discard pile. These cards could be Pokémon or trainer cards.
I missed these thank you so much for the reminder!
@@BugCatcherCarter also currently there are Radiant cards
I just started learning how to play the game and was about to quit because all of this was so overwhelming until this video showed up. thanks for this!
You betcha!
Very nice video. The only thing I'd say is that I think LEGEND cards from DP/HGSS deserved a mention as being the precursor to Tag Team with cards like Entei & Raikou, Rayquaza & Deoxys, and Palkia & Dialga. Plus, they had some of the best artwork Pokemon has done in my opinion, especially with Ho-oh LEGEND and Lugia LEGEND.
Totally forgot about those Legends! Thank you for the comment and the watch I truly appreciate you 🙌🏼
I would absolutely love getting my hands on a HoOh legend card set. Beautiful.
All these cards are so beautiful. I just got into the game this month and love the art of the V/VMAX cards. Makes the game even more fun when one of these gets whipped out.
It really adds a level of excitement!
What's the outro music?!?! Great video!
He never answered it
Very informative. Thank you
Thank you sir!
EX were the best ones imo
They had the best card designs by far
Gx and ex are probably my favorite special card types
cool
i have 1 GX but some time later a pack... maybe
I’m starting to revisit the EX and Mega EX cards and I agree they are beautiful cards!
They look too bombastic/noisy imo.
Yeah i still have more ex or gx than v or vmax i just love them :D
What a video! 10/10, this guy is so personable.
What kind words! I appreciate you my friend.
Super helpful!!! Tnx a lot.
I liked black and whites ex designs. Overall very informative video
I will have to look back at those black and white designs a bit closer. That might be a good video idea to do a deep dive into each era and the artwork. Thanks for the watch!
I agree. The B&W EX cards where always my favorite
I love the amazing rare cards. I have 6 of the 9 and they’re just so cool to look at.
Great video🔥
Thank you!
Very informative video thanks man
Thank you friend!
so useful - been collecting pokemon cards when i was really little, and again in the last few years without knowing what i was doing .
God this is a rabbit hole - really great video, explains a lot and how my old crinkled cards from when i was 10yr old are not very viable (they'll get some sleeves)
That was an fun video even before I started doing research to see how the rules have changed and I opened a card pack and I think I got a v card or something I thought to myself soo just ex again but found this video just to be sure! This was a fun watch!! Thanks for chatching me up
You did a great job explaining man
Thanks my friend that is all I could hope to do.
Just found this video, thank you so much for that explanation man!
WOW THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THE SUPPORT!
already knew all of this but enjoyed watching anyway😊
I am an analyst at google shopping and i see tonnes of these cards being listed on the site, thanks for this video to make me understand these cards better and making my work easy
can i just say that card grading imo is just a free exploit to gain more money just because of the hype and interest around it. alot of the cards that get bumped up in price arnt all actually rare as people say like alot of the recent ones and rainbow rares and stuff but they get bumped up in price anyway despite how easy and recent they were and easy to get a hold of. id understand cards like from the 1st ever packs but all grading ever does its self is boost the price which makes no sense. the card looks neat so it costs £250 more. but why? i dont get the logic behind it. its a card ur meant to be collecting over trading or selling. to me grading is an easy rip off unless in some cases it actually makes sense then i can get behind it. its also never a fixed price and fixed prices are always rip off prices if u do the correct research on it.
say u trade someone a skin in a game say equal of value but its cost varies due to a non fixed price and market centered around people buying and selling those items. at one point, that price will eventually change and when it does, someone from that trade say a year down the line, loses out on payment even if its just a very small amount, but this becomes a scam although its considered fair. this is why i dont like non fixed markets anymore. if theres a non fixed market prices change people lose out. its also annoying to know the fact of regardless who makes the trade and loses and gains from this, the fact that there is price manipulation which people can so easily alter is why these things become so unfair and illogical.
ABSOLUTELY! THANKS FOR WATCHING
Nice video!
Thank you!
Yes dude thank you very much. This video is point. Well done sir.
very great video, for a new comer like me, it helped to understand much more about pokemon tcg generations
So glad it helped you out! I felt the same way coming back to the hobby.
Shiny Pokémon were first introduced in Pokémon gold and silver, in this game you can find a red gyrados in the lake. Now they are in every Pokémon game since
Ah, the old sets. Magmar looked so different! : ) Thanks for the video. From an old collector.
GOD BLESS thank you for watching
I already knew a lot of the recent stuff from EX (capital EX lol) and onward, but it was really interesting to learn about the older special cards. And now there’s VSTAR cards that basically have GX attacks in their VSTAR power, but some VSTAR cards have an ability that you can use once per game instead of an attack. And soon to come are the Scarlet and Violet set that brings back ex!
excellently explained. thank you!
I appreciate that a lot! Thank you
@@BugCatcherCarter 🤘
thanks for the info !
Thanks for the support!
Awesome video
The unique part of Lv. X is it shares playset rule with the non-lv.X counterpart, menaing you can only have four copies in combination.
thank you so much for this video
Thank you so much for watching!
best explanation ever ... thx bro
sub
Now I know more about what those cards are, very interesting (and intimidating in terms of deck building). Just one mystery left, what are Legend cards and why they are split into 2 (oh, and why they are apparently discontinued)
THANK you for the comment and thanks for watching!
So basically, LEGEND cards are two Pokémon as one so that’s why they are two, a bit like V-UNION. They were only around in the X and Y series (2013-16) so that’s why they have been discontinued.
you should do a follow up video with the VSTAR and Radiant pokemon! :0
Thanks very very informative
Thank you!
This is a great video. Although you did miss a Prism Stars which was introduced in the Sun and Moon era. Still amazing video though
THANKS FOR WATCHING! I really appreciate the support and kind words. Dang i totally forgot the prism stars
Super helpful
Glad to hear it! Thanks for watching!
Team tag should have been about evolving the 2 separate cards on bench/active and combining all the markers and items toegether and still 2 price cards would have been great.
i can see it happening where pokemon cards will go up to at least 500hp with 4 to 5 prize cards to take if knocked out and just making cards like ex's seem pathetic in comparison. the hp and attacks are getting stronger each time and its actually one of the things that can balance out previous varients of cards that were once broken levels OP like most of the tag team cards still are. put it this way, the only varients of cards that are on moreless the same level as tag teams are would be V'stars. not even alot of V'max's can tend to compare in dmg and hp. its not that they arnt OP in their own way however some tag team cards have like 320hp and do like 200dmg in 3 to 4 energy which is honestly generous for a tag team card with high hp like that. its the main reason why i dont like those cards as they are still very broken and OP to go against. one of the petty ways to play rn.
THAT WOULD BE AWESOME!
@@unboxing_legend7708Late, but powercreep is doing okay at this moment, as a lot of TAG TEAMS are still playable in expanded. The Pokémon company also seems to have realised their mistake with 3-prize Pokémon, as they began to phase them out with VSTARS and no more have been printed at the time of me writing this comment. The 340 HP barrier is also holding up pretty well as of now, with none having broken it as of now, without the use of outside help like abilities and trainers,
Thnaks bro!
What a good video. 👍
Yo thank you so much for the compliment! I hope I can make more helpful content!
thanks for the video, the one thing that really gets me as a returning player is the crazy amount of power creep. my poor Zapdos from 2000 has 70hp, and he does 30 damage from a 3 energy move that can potentially hurt himself. now i have a Seaking in my current deck with 90hp and does 90 damage from a 1 energy move, you just flip a coin for a miss. it really makes old card useless except for evolves. i remember when my friend had a Whaleord card with 180hp back in the day when thinking it would never get higher than that, because average legendries at the time had 130HP. now i have an Acceus V card with 220hp and my friend has GX 'Zard and rayquaza, both with 250hp
not really. id have to disagree. from 1st glance yes they do however with pokemon tools and the right deck, these still become very useful. id even go as far to say every single pokemon card has some decent use if u can find out how to make a good deck with it. i mean even in recent packs, togedemaru has only 70 hp and one move that does 10dmg but is only good because if it gets a heads from a flipped coin, as a basic pokemon, if it were knocked out in the opponents next turn, they dont take any prize cards for it. so essentially its a chip dmg sometimes lifeline extra turn defensive and supportive card although seemingly useless. with the right tools and weaknesses to add dmg and other things. this could easily be on par with stage 1 pokemon which imo it already is without these things.
also i got back into collection when evolving skies just came out or had been out for some time, i actually got very lucky on card pack openings because i have about 60 to 80 percent of the deck complete and i only ever got 1 copy of a pokemon v and or v max out of a total of like 600 cards altogether. i have rainbow cards, 3 gold cards which one is a electric energy card V's Vmax's and i think V'stars if they re in evolving skies. im just happy most of those i got on my own while some were sadly given to me which annoys me to know i cant now fully complete that set solo when i dont remember what cards i was given and put into the folder. still tho, ik for sure that i got all 3 gold cards and most if not all eevee's on my own.
I think I speak for all the newbies and Dads in the comment section with a big thank you. I try to get a base understanding of the stuff ky kids are into and spending money on, this was a huge help!
love the video but off topic what's the background song or music you have playing at 5:44
Bro your background music is on 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Great video but something that you forgot that I think is important is pokemon prism star I feel even though there isn't many of them they're still something cool to talk about
