I'm sure that they'd be a lot more durable. I buy large "retirement" collections from japan regularly and have had cards which come together in a box without sleeves that have been left for many years grade 9.5 and even on one occasion a 10 with CGC. When cards are heavily played as well it's very hard to cause any damage to the corner and edges but it does cause some minor scratching on the holofoil.

Great research all around. One thing I'd like to see tested is the use of "perfect fit" sleeves and if they cause Holo scratches/edge wear. Also, the combination of perfect fit sleeves and one-touch magnetic cases. These are becoming popular with the backlog at grading companies persisting. This way collectors can still get a similar experience of a card in a slab but not wait a year/pay an arm and a leg.
@@Fox_Mccloud11 But if you use perfect fit sleeves is because you are putting them into a binder or some other place, not for being removed constantly...
I wonder if different holo patterns have different scratchability. The Sword and Shield holo patterns seem to get less scuffed than the more “smooth” holo
Yes there are differences! Some holo cards have more of a rough surface and they scratch SUPER easily!!!! Best example I could think of are the first EX cards such as mewtwo ex. They have a very rough surface that seemlingly collects scratches just by breathing on them... Its not just the EX cards, but also all of their reverse holo cards from that set. So its not about the holo pattern itself, but the general surface and the way these cards were printed. You can usually tell by gently touching the cards to understand what I mean. Some feel almost "sticky" and get scratched WAY easier than smoother ones. I think they fixed this issue and only certain sets were affected by this issue btw.

I guess for the touch test, can the oils simply be wiped off? A lot of people recommend wiping oils off with a microfiber cloth… could that scratch the card too, though?
A quality microfiber will not scratch a card. The card will actually harm the towel more since it has the greater surface tension. Sebum oil(body oil) will degrade anything that is paper and ink with time. That's why high end art is handled with super soft cotton gloves.
Great video! I’d love for you to test gloves (latex, cloth, vinyl etc ) vs just hands when opening cards. Is one the best for preserving your cards? (Preventing oils, increase chance of scratching, increase risk of dropping, leaving other residue etc).

You should get them re graded by PSA as well as CGC respectively with the cards you pulled and see if their grade changes or is the same when you get them back
Tip: Cut a top corner of of graded Pokemon slab diagonally and insert a screwdriver through this cut across the slab label then pry open the whole upper slab preserving the card and avoiding cracking of the case over the card.
ive been curious about the sleeves that come in etbs. i normally put the lower end stuff i get in those like modern holos but ive always been a little skeptical of them damaging the cards
The silver lining is known to over time end up transferring to the back of the cards. I've had this happen myself so I tend to avoid them if I can help it.
I've always wanted to know what causes card scratching, so I'm SO glad you made this video for us! This really helps break down what's actually harmful and what's not, so I know how careful I need to be in the future.
Awesome video Pat! I was surprised with the sleeve test, but more so with the card slide test. We all do that when opening packs, sliding them across each other for dramatic effect lol. Maybe not the best idea huh 🤔 Great info ty so much!
Great video - both entertaining and a niche I wish was explored more. The foil damage with a soft sleeve was most surprising. My pet hate is sleeving cards and feeling the corner nick. I sometimes even put my finger inside a new sleeve and press my nail into the top corners to open it more before putting cards in. Regular sleeves rather than soft sleeves pose the most risk, although corners can catch with soft sleeves as well. It would be great to see you formulate the correct method to sleeve a card to prevent damage!

I'd like to see a video of you letting us know what we can do to protect the cards from these everyday mistakes. Do I wear gloves to open the pack? Open it a certain way? Hoe to get it in the sleeve with the least possible damage etc etc. Thank you for the educational video though. You got a new subscriber :)
Love this! I’ve always been curious if I’m being over protective. Perfect fit, regular sleeve, and top loader for every raw card I own. I handle everything like a museum artifact with exam gloves, but I’ve had suspicions about the pressure on the surface, but still a bit suspicious about top loaders. Luckily I haven’t damaged anything important, but always looking for better storage methods!
Honestly, this video was awesome, think you so much for taking the time to make videos like this so people like me and others can watch this as well, overall, I think that all your videos are like 10/10 no problem and also I love in another video that you did you said BAD BINDER BEHAVIOR that was so funny, and it made sense because it was BAD BINDER BEHAVIOR 😂
Thank you for doing a video like this! I am always careful when handling my cards, but I do move them around quite a bit in the 9--slot binder sleeves! The holos I put in a soft sleeve and put a plastic sticky tab on the back to pull it out of whatever I put it in, but I didn't realize it could still be scratched from the soft sleeve!
I ruined a possible PSA 10 Galarian Moltres V alt art because of a perfect fit scratching the back side. You never know what microscopic dirt is resting on the card/in the sleeve. Your next video should be called "Perfect fits: the biggest scam in card games" lmao. Great content DPM!
one thing i think you should have done after touching the holo of the card.... is try to use a very soft cloth to see if you could have removed that oil and cloudyness on the card... the kind of very gentle cloth provided with glasses. i'm really curious to see if it could help.
When I take em outta sleeves and put em in sleeves I always give gentle pressure to the sides; to pop the sleeve off the face and back of the card and softly slide it out. 💜
Lowkey always thought about this and this just confirmed it - better off buying magnetic card holders IMO especially now that PSA doesn’t even know the differences between real or fake… I love psa slabs don’t get me wrong but they shake so easy. Pro Mold has great magnetic slabs I actually did a video on them recently and pulled a charizard in the same video! Ahh I digress great video!! I appreciate you ! I just subbed
I'm not really a pokemon card collector to this extreme. I used to collect as a kid. The most triggering part for me, however, is the small nick at the top of the last chancy after it was opened. It hurt me so bad to see that.
I would love to see a science experiment on how easy it is to ruin the edges/corners of the cards 😂 Also I think it would be cool to do a collab with a TGC player for a video! Every sellers grades are different and every graders grading is different.
Subjective would be a better way to phrase it than a scam though.
@@jontegreimits very subjective. Depending on who does it you'll get a different grade. I've watched people open PSA 8s wipe it down and send it somewhere else and get a PSA 9. It's a scam
@jontegreim there's a really good I think it was Karl Jobst; where he goes into the inflated prices of collector games. Recommend watching for more info
Damn, I've been watching Pat since he had 5k subs. So happy to see bro almost has 1million! Goodjob man!
He then listed the cards on tcgplayer as near mint
Man pat is just one uping himself every video! This year is gunna be 🔥🔥 These are the kind of things I’ve always wondered myself!! Thank you sir! Always testing your cards to show everyone else what NOT to do!
Thanks so much! 🙏🏼
2:16. Love that holo bleed on that Chansey. I have a magnaton and a Clefairy with some heavy Holo bleed, and my Charizard from evolutions has some light Holo bleed.
This video was incredibly useful. It really is unfortunate how easily they get damaged. Thank you for this
I wish I could share pictures of my cards from when I was a kid 😬 so many scratches. We didn't know how to riffle shuffle and sleeves...🙄 yeah 😂. We would just swirl our cards around the table to mix them up 😂
I also tend to play mtg with decks unsleeved 🙄
Sir ur a savage
@@josepalacios5924 I pulled charizard allot. I remember trading one for a blastoise and traded one to a kid for his offspring cd cuz my dad took mine away. No regrets 😂
@@GoatHeadTed hahah wow
My theory is that if you don't want your cards to get damaged, don't play with them.
I love science, but my soul hurts after this experiment. Thank you for taking one for the team Pat.
Haven’t watched the video yet but since you said that, I’m scared
Legos and Pokemon cards!
Man takes me back to my childhood.
Love your for science videos thank you
Awesome video Pat! I was surprised with the sleeve test, but more so with the card slide test. We all do that when opening packs, sliding them across each other for dramatic effect lol. Maybe not the best idea huh 🤔
Great info ty so much!
This is exactly why i’ll never buy ungraded cards online, thank you deep pocket monster for these finds! Science!
After PSA being exposed so much lately I feel safer just buying singles. Just look at reviews
@@TrEverEvoy scam city. Most these grading services don’t even know fakes from real
My god, I love your experiments, but it's going to be hard to watch lol.
You truly are a mad scientist x)
Watching people wear gloves while opening pokemon cards will never not make a 20+ year collector cringe
🤣🤣🤣
Opening, yes. But shall we do that during touching a card outside of an opening? I guess not.
"The slide will make you cry; The lift is the gift" manz spittin with that one🗣️💯💯
Wow I would have never thunk it! Thanks Deep Pocket Monster for showing a complete noob such as myself how to properly sleeve my precious cards!
This is why you're THAT GUY pat! SUUUUUPER INFORMATIVE VID! thanks for scratching your cards so we don't have to, but this video has inspired me to run my own tests! SNORLAX TESTS🧐🤓 you don't wanna get rattled😂🤣😂 your vids like this let me know that you are a different breed of poketuber. Each of your vids like this raise the standard on what I feel I must do in my vids. It's odd to think that I've been at this for almost a year and only recently feel like I've started actually learning. Thank you for these bro! You are my Yoda. My miyagi. I'm glad you exist in the pokemon community! Keep em coming, I'm ready to learn more from you and have more ideas get sparked from what you do!
your videos are so good, you answer question that half the people didnt know they wanted answer.
Even in sports card, i see people do a "Fast reveal", can't imagine the smaller abrasion thats occuring..
thanks
When double sleeving cards is it okay to use the 66mmx91mm sleeves as the inner sleeve with a penny sleeve going over it or should the inner sleeve be a perfect fit?
THEN HOW DO I PROTECT HOLOS
please answer for the sake of my collection
also I need your advice; my binder is getting PRETTY FULL... should I get a new binder or not?
more asking for advice; I have 1 Radiant, 3 holos, a few reverses, 1 full art and 1 gold mew V, 1 Decidueye GX, 1 kommo-o GX 1, (fake) emolga EX, and 1 iron valiant ex (all sleeved). what do I do with them because they're in the same binder as my bulk.
I am pretty new to this channel. I haven't seen anyone else doing videos like this experimenting with Poke cards. I really liked it.
Can I just say your editing has improved drastically!
When you said you’re testing your cards so I don’t have to, that’s when I pressed like button
Bless ye for doing this science experiment! Also top notch editing and shots. This is a difficult subject to capture on camera. Awesome stuff!!
I love your content and especially the editing :)
I also wanted to mention how nifty that little lego shaker you made is! I am impressed!
Thank you! 😁
Great information on this Pat i have always wonder myself about this especially the sleeves 😀. Great video
I think you'll have to start a new science channel Pat🥼🔬🧬🧪
I love it!
This is the video we all needed and we appreciate your sacrifice Chansey!
i love these videos when you make them! great content my man
Pat out here doing the research again 🙌🏻
Great video
Its all logic and common sense that should be known or passed down to new collectors..good vid.
For science!!! Poor chansey’s 😂 great video pat I love your informative series 👌🏼👌🏼👌🏼
Learned a lot about cards preservation in this video. Great man!
I was about to order 1,000 of these sleeves on Amazon but something told me not to. I guess I made the right decision?
one thing i think you should have done after touching the holo of the card.... is try to use a very soft cloth to see if you could have removed that oil and cloudyness on the card... the kind of very gentle cloth provided with glasses. i'm really curious to see if it could help.
When I take em outta sleeves and put em in sleeves I always give gentle pressure to the sides; to pop the sleeve off the face and back of the card and softly slide it out. 💜
Love ur vids ur awesome and always wanted to get some packs from u but it’s all good cuz watching u is just a treat
Omg amazing results...I'm not even going to breathe now when I open my cards too!
Nice Video Man! 👍 🔥
6:46 "Chansy is trying to grow more hair it looks like"
Science wins again.. great info man.. like always.. let's gooo
I LOVE these videos!!! Keep up the GREAT work Pat!!! You rock!!!😎👍✌️
Awesome Video as Always DPM!!!
I'm not really a pokemon card collector to this extreme. I used to collect as a kid. The most triggering part for me, however, is the small nick at the top of the last chancy after it was opened. It hurt me so bad to see that.
I would love to see a science experiment on how easy it is to ruin the edges/corners of the cards 😂
Also I think it would be cool to do a collab with a TGC player for a video! Like you inspect and judge the quality of the cards in their deck, and then you guys play a round of the game just for kicks and giggles
