    I chose to retire in the Philippines several years ago....after visiting the country many times over 20 years. I understand the pros and cons, but have chosen the Philippines, the people, the culture, the lifestyle, etc over the US. I love it here, and I'm soooo grateful for the Filipinos that have not only welcomed and helped me, but have become my best friends.

      @@rgasta7765 I chose to live on the island of Palawan for many reasons and after quite a bit of research and travel around the Philippines over the years. No volcanos, no earthquakes, very rare typhoon activity......a recognized biodiverse island with lots of mountains, beautiful beaches..... a small but international airport.....small population and quiet, but sufficient infrastructure and commercial services / conveniences. No place is perfect, but Palawan suits me just fine. Check it out....

      Hey John, I’m planning a trip in the next week & was told some fun stuff regarding Manila then to Bangkok. I’ve recently finalized a long, painful & expensive divorce from a 30y marriage. I just returned from a 4 month journey from Colombia, Venezuela, Costa Rica then Mexico.
      I have zero time constraints & real ideas or plans so any info would be helpful.
      Most of the videos are fun but I’d like more a view of a local. The locals obviously know where to go or how to make it a better experience.
      Ive been back in LA less than a week & can’t wait to leave. Anywhere…Asia sounds fun as It’s been quite a while.
      Anyway, is there a local website or something where a solo almost 50yo could get a local guide or something to that nature? No funny biz…After my divorce I’m afraid of women! 😂
      Much appreciated for any info.

    • @palawandreams
      @palawandreams 2 года назад +8

      @@myexkidsarekillingmeslowly8555 HI.....sorry about the divorce. I got divorced after 20 years myself, so I get it. At any rate, I'd say a) there are plenty of videos on youtube that are very simple and just showing the local culture, but you have to wade through the ones that are all about the women, hotspots, etc.....and if you think you'd want to live in Asia, look for those and the ones made to show the pros and cons of whatever area/country you're considering. b) as for local tour guides, I don't know of any right off, but there are websites that cater to this.....one time I went to Thailand and had a local tour guide...not a group, but personal....and it was fantastic. Also, if you can get the right tour van operator, you can hire them for the day and they will take you to all the local spots and talk one on one with you....just make sure you get one that speaks English. If you come to the Philippines, most of the tour van operators do speak English but finding a genuine guy might be tougher. If you come here to Palawan I can possibly source one for you, and could show you the town easy enough. To truly experience the local culture might take a while....you have to sort of settle in, look around, be willing to venture out and not be shy to talk to strangers. The Philippine people are amazingly friendly and willing to help. In the provinces (countryside) some won't speak such great English however. Best of wishes in your adventures!

      Hey brother sorry for the delayed response…my condolences & respect to your mother & all your loved ones brada!
      All I’ll say is that 95% of people who talk shit about Mexico & south don’t know shit $ have never been there but maybe to Tijuana or some other place.
      BTW, TJ is very cool, safe, great food & gorgeous girls all over the place.
      I’m more afraid in Los Angeles after dark than 3am in TJ or anywhere else I’ve been. Now don’t get me wrong there are bad areas but you can sense those so just back pedal or roll thru with your head up, a crooked eyebrow & a downward head tilt “what’s up” will get you thru most areas.
      At least in my experiences.
      In fact, I just took my early teenage daughters to Ensenada for a week for thanksgiving & had a 2bdrm beachfront villa for less than $100/night.
      Anyway, DT LA is way scarier than 99% of places I’ve traveled in Latin America.

It's only the middle class, the rich and the privelleged few who can fully enjoy all the wonders and beauty of the Philippines, I lived in a small village in Cebu, my neighbours were fisherman, poor and unemployed for the most part, living day to day, eating rice with corned beef for lunch, tin of sardines with eggs and some pandesal, 3 in 1 coffee and cigarettes bought singly from the sari-sari store!

    • @jo21ann
      @jo21ann 2 года назад +5

      @@blairclare9482 I respect your opinion and honestly am not trying to start an argument. The reported statistical numbers do show a 17 to 20 percent poverty rate currently. I believe in the past decade or so there has been a big improvement. We are trusting the government to give these numbers and the poverty line is around 12,000 pesos/month for a family of 5. I know the cost of living is generally lower than a lot of places (depending on where you reside) most items can be purchased cheaper in the right places but even so that's a low benchmark for a family of 5. Even if the reported numbers are 100% legit, just because you are making over 12,000 pesos/month does not mean that you are not living in poverty. OFW's and Filipinos living/working abroad are a big reason the numbers are not even lower and a lot of people make the sacrifice to leave their families and country to be able to provide for them. It can be very difficult to make a good living in most places in the Philippines. I have spent a lot of time there, been all over the country and have many filipino friends and family. Most of them would not share your view on the situation there and from what I have seen and experienced I would not agree either. That being said maybe I am completely off base and what I have seen and heard does not reflect reality. I do know that Filipinos are a proud and mostly happy people no matter what thier circumstances.

      I think the level hospitality of Filipinos is due to the fact that they are separated by islands. And long before airplane or fast craft travel arrived, people travel for days in small boats so that when they arrived in another island, people are so like happy to see new faces ,new people and since everyone had that experience traveling and knew how exhausting it was, they offer the best food and accommodation to the newcomers.
      Well, this is just my theory though as a Filipino who had been a receipient of this hospitality from fellow Filipinos so many times and who had experience as a kid how my parents afforded this kind of hospitality to visitors who arrived in our house. My mom always had clean blankets,pillows kept in closets reserved for any visitos: family relatives or even strangers. And of course, to slaughter chicken for food. That is why as kid, I'd always love to have visitors coming because we get to eat delicious food than usual meals😂

It was heartbreaking to have to leave. I will be back as soon as possible as I felt more at home in this foreign country then I ever have where I've lived most of my life in the US.

    Jonathan, thank you for saying good things about Cebu and the Filipinos. Of course, every country has pros and cons but Filipinos are used to it, always worked hard, always nice, always smiling, always friendly and resilient, mostly never have time to think to give up, always looking for the positive side of every situation, thinking how to live with what they got and seeing it always as a daily blessing. Hope you meet more filipinos and enjoy your time in the Philippines. We always support those who are good people. Thank you also for being good to the Philippines.

I still remember being told in whispers to always make our guests feel at home, make sure to offer them food or at least a beverage, and never leave then unattended. As an adult now, I see myself treating my guests the same way. It's certainly not unique to my family. I'm convinced to be kind and welcoming of guests is in the Filipino DNA. Bought brand new Honda CRF 300 rally. Fist tire change could not find the tires. On line or at the stores. Try calling a business. Good luck. 20% of the businesses have a working number. Most don't have a website. Same problem with brakes for my Sport Trac. Businesses close for lunch no service period. Buying anything imported is more expensive than buying in the USA. A gallon of milk is three times the cost. Many issues. But marrying a philipina means deal with it.

    My brother married a lovely Philippine woman and they have been together 25 years and have never had an argument. She is kind and thoughtful and respects his side of the family too. They first met through a mutual friend, and they said they both felt a magnetic pull towards each other which was unexplainable.
    When my mother died, her Philipino friends who were only acquaintances of my mother came to the funeral to support us. They did not come to the wake because they believe that was only for my mother's closest friends. So humble, but I would have been very pleased if they came.

    So happy you like our country Jonathan. That's also the reason why I like watching your videos. You know that's the nature of us Filipinos, even in the face of poverty and difficult times we still manage to smile and laugh. Take it from me, I lost my motorcycle with the bank, and I can't work anymore as a delivery driver, my wife and I ate once a day because of the financial situation we are in but we're still happy and one reason for that is your videos. Watching your videos makes me smile and joyfull.

    Be great to live somewhere friendly. I'm from a small city in Australia and you can't even say, " G'day" to a stranger when walking down the street without them giving you a stern look and refusing to reciprocate. I'm sure it' would be different there.

      Other places with warm gracious people are Chile, Cuba, Malaysia, Japan, Brighton and Devon in England, and New Orleans in the USA. You feel like you never want to leave.

    Great video! This is not a criticism, but I love it when someone from the US goes to the PI and is surprised about the "energy" they see. That's what's called the "happiness factor" in the Philippines. Now don't get me wrong, because when you go to the Philippines, there's a lot of poverty and poor infrastructure compared to what we are familiar with here in the US. What most Americans don't understand is that someone in the Philippines can be happy with a lot less than what we as Expats have. Combined with the high level of Faith in Philippines, there's a level of contentment that is hard for many expats to understand...
    But be forewarned... It will have an impact on you! If you can let your guard down and integrate with the Vibe... It will be a stress reducing experience and one that is very life changing. That's why a lot of expats settle in the Philippines. I plan on living in multiple countries when I retire and the PI is one of them!

    I have been with my Filipina wife now for 12 years, the best years of my life. One of the most caring, loving and hard working people I have ever met. My health is failing as I get older, but she cares for me beautifully. We have a couple of Apartments there and some businesses for when we retire there. Her family are wonderful too, they named one of their sons after me. I travelled the World as a travel agent, but the Filipinos are easily the most hospitable and friendly people I ever met. Cannot wait to go back.
