Agreed. He not only was truly great on the bass (pretty adept at guitar and violin too), but he was most likely the principal author of most of their original material and of their musical approach. He and Kerry Minnear remain truly giants of prog rock, IMHO
Eric Golub-- It's true that the majority of the music recorded by Gentle Giant was composed by Ray Shulman and Kerry Minnear. The others contributed also, but the majority was written by Ray and Kerry.
@@hangemhigh63 I have seen a Yes show. I will amend it to say, 'one of the best', however, in the style of what they are do, I feel they are the best, and in the style of what Yes does, they are the best. It's not a competition, they are both awesome.
Sensational concert in front of living corpses:) Kerry 's incredible vibraphone solo reminded me how he improvised, not only on vibraphone, NOT following any blues or jazz cliché. It's like Stravinski or Hindemith improvising. Mind blowing.
I think he's the most single greatest multi-instrument musician I've ever seen...and he's one of the greatest progressive rock keyboard players ever. It's Emerson and Wakeman...then all the others including Minnear.
@@Eleventhearlofmars Like I said it Emersona and Wakeman in the top tier. In the second tier there's Banks, Wright, Minnear and Evan..third tier Moraz, Argent, and Bardens. I am not a Rudess fan.
GG - strong, talented, creative, capable, funky, fun, classical, theatrical, energetic and infectious are all words that come to mind when I hear their music or see it filmed live like here. And I wasn't even born for another 6 years after they broke up.
John Weathers is such a functional drummer. I love Bill Bruford, Robert Wyatt or Billy Cobham for their creativity. But John is just so GOOD and serving, I love it
Superhuman levels of musicianship. You saw that a lot in prog rock. Gentle Giant were almost a genre of their own, incredibly original and very influential. Personally I'd rather listen to Genesis, Floyd or Crimson, but I have the utmost respect for GG.
So few people for such a great band and song...But, as Ian wrote in Thick as a Brick; "We shall be geared towards the average rather than the exceptional" So sublime...So amazing!
the only band i ever heard zappa say he was into was GG. thought they were really different. i still play cogs for my students just to see their face and mouths drop.
The part that starts at 1:43 is easily one of the highest moments on music and is not available on any record... or is it? That guitar figure at 1:51 gets second to second more intense, reaching at 2:07 its very top.
Me gusta jugar dota 2.
2:54 No applause?!? LOL Maybe they were told not to, or that all would die if they did. By the way, this is the best quality (video and sound) of these particular clips.
Don't be so negative, music like G G and Genesis are unique in their own right, be open to different styles and tastes, some people just don't give these musicians a good listen.👍😎
+Vincent Janowski every live broadcasted concert like this had an audience resembling the same behavior back in the 70's nothing strange, people were just different in Europe at that time.
+Vincent Janowski Good old times when the audience was there to listen to the artists and shut the fuck up. Today they come to hear themselves clap falsely to bad music.
The most bizarre part of this performance was the audience. I would be tapping my foot and keeping time with the music. Silence. No applause between songs. The audience had to have been staged or deer looking into the headlights.
I really dislike these Gentle Giant videos, but the first track here, Cogs in Cogs, stands out for me. It's less a "look how much we practised"-vibe I get so often with Gentle Giant, but it actually brings across a kind of energy I like in some prog rock.
How ironic of you to say that being that cogs in cogs is probably the most challenging song they played on this set lol...maybe you're not a musician so you can't tell the difference, idk.
Let's face it...These chaps created some of the greatest ensemble music in history!
Ray Shulman
Most underrated bassist of all time. If Gentle Giant broke into mainstream he would be a top 20 bassist of all time

Dobie Gillis as narrator!
Hip changer May_nard [G.]
MrFallout2 MAN!! I’ve ALWAYS said that!!!
CRIMINALLY underrated!! Totally agree with your top 20 comment...
When I think I've listened all GG I revisit every album paying special attention to Ray's basalines. He is unreal
There is no way that these are human beings. Best rock group of all time.
NO DOUBT
That is a good way to put it, because I haven't seen any other humans do this !

I don’t know why Kerry Minnear never gets mentioned as one of the best prog keyboardist ever. He’s incredible!
He IS mentioned... ask to any progger.

Mel Man banks is better than Emerson imo
These guys have to be in the conversation of best musicians of all time. They could play a full concert on the spoons and make it sound incredible.
YEAH
They speak in such a different language these guys are the most original ever!!
More musical genius in 14:14 than entire neo prog bands careers
Not too many Gentle Giant Tribute Bands floating out there--eh? You would need 20 musicians....
GG - strong, talented, creative, capable, funky, fun, classical, theatrical, energetic and infectious are all words that come to mind when I hear their music or see it filmed live like here. And I wasn't even born for another 6 years after they broke up.
Best band Ever. Saw them three times. Every time they perform at the highest level.
Listening to this band is my guilty pleasure. Maybe because only a few can appreciate the mastery and humor of these guys. Unbelievable counterpoint.
This is a masterpiece
Quietly leading the genre.
In my opinion is this the best live footage from Gentle Giant ever. It makes me speechless every time when i see the band with these awesome songs.
this performance is a gem. 73 is when i first saw them in the usa. blew us away.
Ray Shulman the GENIUS. R.I.P. Gentle Giant, the best band everywhere. Its incredible the modern sound and the composition of harmony and rithm.
John Weathers is such a functional drummer. I love Bill Bruford, Robert Wyatt or Billy Cobham for their creativity. But John is just so GOOD and serving, I love it
Cogs in Cogs with time Signatures that include 15/8, 17/16, 9/8, 7/8, 3/2 The BEST prog rock band EVER !! Kerry Minnear pure genius
If you like time signature changes maybe "Alien Orifice" by Zappa.
GG, Phenomenal band. Phenomenal musicians. They are from another universe.
Cogs in Cogs is one of the best songs they ever did!
of course they're quiet. They're mesmerised by the performance
They nail every note from the studio too...Such an amazing group and well underappreciated to the extreme...
Best Prog group - ever.
Right behind King Crimson.
One of
Best rock* group ever.
I would give Zappa first place. But GG certainly carved out a special place with prog fans.
@@banishedfromthedwarfplanet530 Zappa would be first. Fripp would be in the top 5.
Also was fortunate to have seen them way back when. Every player in this band is just astounding.

Impressionante até hoje. Virtuose e melódico, um som contemporâneo.
Brilliant!! Is there no limit to the Shulmans and GG's multi instrumental and vocal talents with Derek's excellent lead vocals?!
Purely musically, I feel that Yezda Urfa showed the limits. But Yezda Urfa were a clone, not an original, for sure.
Great!!! Super Legends!!! Love!!!
i was sold at the violinist in the velvet shirt.
Holy shit! My blood just froze. An AMAZING take by an indescribably talented bunch of musicians.
Masterpiece.
It seems weird to see John Weathers without his Oakland As uniform.
Lucky me saw them 3 times
Saw them front row 'Missing Piece" tour. . .great show.
the only band i ever heard zappa say he was into was GG. thought they were really different. i still play cogs for my students just to see their face and mouths drop.
Very smart, cutting the best vibra solo ever

They are mutants from the far future
What a dead audience....and I mean lifeless. Absolutely unforgivable behavior...and disrespectful...to the infectious Gentle Giant live groove.
This is so bad,its great! Its a car crash ya cant look away from!
@Kevin James like mould
Is everyone in the audience dead ?
