Really, this was your favourite? Sounds to me like they really haven’t got it together at this point, it’s all pretty ramshackle. In all fairness they probably couldn’t hear each other on stage hence the tuning problems. Having no drummer at this point also doesn’t help.
Bunked off school for this and got a day's suspension and finally have spotted myself in the crowd which I hadn't on the Fairport footage. Abiding memory is being sat on the stage just before this performance and a voice coming from behind the amps "Get off the f##king stage". Btw I'm right in front of Peter Knight.
I spent like 3 months listening to all these guys' stuff on RUclips, after discovering this, All Around My Hat, Demon Lover, and Gaudete. Best investment ever. 300 years of musical history would be lost without them
We walked along the beach from Formby for this and found the band members playing football against a local made-up team. Martin Carthy was barefoot in goal. The concert was short and curtailed by the cutting-off of the power supply. Immensely memorable though.
This is so wonderful to watch this video from 1971. I was in my teens then and loved Maddy's voice. Oh, how I wished I had Maddy's talent and looked like her too. Beautiful face, high cheekbones and long straight lovely hair and tall. Alas, I don't have ANY of those features or talent. Maddy, looking like a model here. Lovely, lovely voice.
Oh, what a glory. There’s nothing like a live performance, even if a recorded version is my only access to it. Such clarion voices, beautiful instrumentation, and good lord, Maddy Prior is one hell of a natural beauty. (In addition to having my favorite voice in the history of ever)
I had the pleasure of seeing them here in Adelaide, in the 70's, at the Apollo Theatre. Great concert. And thankfully they played their #1 song, 'All Around My Hat'. Well, it was to sell the Album that came from...lol.
@@colstearn9005 I heard the song "All Around My Hat" on the radio and went looking for the album because I loved the sound of that song. Their records were here, but they got almost zero airplay on the radio. And back then that's all there was - the radio. And if you didn't live in or near a big city, there was no chance you'd ever hear them. And if your local record store didn't have their record - no other way to get a copy.
All around my hat is quite definitely the worst thing SS ever put out. The 'guvnor' was gone by that time. If you liked them after hearing that you have my utmost admiration.
I found this gem by accident at 2:30 am. Completely entranced by the music, I just stood and listened to it all. (In 1971, I was 28, doing research in AI in Edinburgh University. Do the maths for my age 🤣)
In 1971 I was in the US Navy and I was stationed in the Holy Loch, Scotland. . Most of my family was Irish. However, most of my wife's family was Scottish. Her father's parents were from Greenock when they emigrated to the US. . I had a good friend who was working on her PhD at the University of Glasgow. So I ended up hanging out with several Scots. We went to several pubs. We'd go up stairs where the tourists weren't allowed and listen to a local band. It got a bit hectic when a couple of dogs got in a fight, but no one missed a beat.
@@ChrisSmith-xh9wb And didn't I see a TV documentary where one of the Sex Pistols (can't remember which one) admitted to always liking Roy Orbison but kept schtum so as not to spoil his snearing badboy image?
Lovely “venue” for Steeleye. Must have been a delightful show to attend. Martin Carthy and Ashley Hutchings with Peter and Tim. Major swoon for Maddy ❤️
Got wind of this in the students Union at Edge Hill and somehow got over to the coast in a rush. Great fun and a unique gig. Strangely still can't spot any of us in the crowd! Nevermind, great times!
Ainsdale was my all time favourite place as a kid. I was so blessed to have parents who took me and my two brothers there on a fairly regular basis from Manchester in late forties and early fifties. Steeleye Span weren't around then but by'eck I wish they had have been.
I had a 90 minute cassette recorded from the first few albums, my favored picks. Spent many fine hours with their accompaniment. And our ancestors whispering. Lady drummer and all. Love it!
When they added Robert Johnson, their style solidified into something that was simply wonderful. I’ve loved the since Ten Man Mop. I bet I listen to one of their albums (different albums, not the same one over and over) at least every month. After over fifty years they’ve been one of my favorite groups.
Many thanks to whoever sharpened this up to HD. You can now see the expressions on Maddy's face much clearer and she's obviously having a ball. Surely the greatest female vocalist of all time. Peter Knight's fiddle, just fantastic. Steeleye Span ARE Maddy & him. The violinists they've had since are competent, but PK has that touch of magic about his playing.
@@sparkypeter Absolutely right sir! I suggest ilderton Mann needs to listen more. PK and MP are the band!? They're part of the band, a great band and one, like Fairport, that probably wouldn't exist if not for Sir English Trad Cool - Ashley Hutchings. Check the bass Mr Mann
I am amazed that in several closeups the two guitar players are chewing gum in a rhythm completely unrelated to the music. How? I could not do that if I tried.

Can anyone explain the comparison of the last track they played to Galtee Farmer - from Commoner's Crown? I'm wondering why they changed the lyrics...or maybe the two tunes are similar anyway. I only ask as a Yorkshire lad :-)

It was not a concert per-se, it was a made for TV show featuring Steeleye and Fairport. It was advertised locally as a free concert to get a decent size crowd. BUT, word got around that big free festival was taking place and literally thousands of people kept coming, even after the roadies were clearing up. Turned into a nightmare for the police.
I can't distinguish between Steeleye and Fairport, all vids for this show so far has the same footage and it seems the same band all the way through. Did they join forces?
Uh, this is really better at 125% speed, in fact I think that is the norma tempo since it sounds like all the records I have of this song. It is posted at maybe 80% speed here ... seems like.
I have experimented with both the video and the audio by speeding it up to 5% faster and can safely conclude that you are not correct. As it is a very old recording there is a chance it is maybe 1 or 2% slower when transferred from the original tape but even looking at the impact 2% has on the peoples movements in the crowd then it still didn't look right. So it's just as it should be :)
@@spanfan7669 Maybe 125% is a bit fast, but look at 0:19 and see how slow those two members of the audience are moving. It is definitely slowed down.
