A 13th century origin story with one of the most disturbing themes in all of folk history- Little Sir Hugh (9 years old) of Lincoln- She sat him on a golden chair, "she gave him sugar sweet She lay him on a dressing board and stabbed him like a sheep" - Steeleye's version I believe toned down the most horrible symbolism of this ritual murder to avoid dealing with antisemitic accusations behind this death.

I was 12 in 1974 and it massively reminds me of that time when I hear this again. I am transported back to 1974. And Christmas.

I remember this always being played at Christmas for some reason when I was a kid. Always loved Steeleye Span.....

Although I really enjoy this song musically, I am appalled that it is based on a 13th (14th?) century lie about a Jewish atrocity against an English child in Lincolnshire. The supposed well the child was thrown into was dug in the late 19th century. [Deep breath] Anyway, haters will hate no matter the truth.

I used to sing or try too in sixties bands and the music was so loud plugging the ears or one ear enables one to sing IN TUNE! because you can hear oneself clearly especially in this case in complex harmony, even with no instruments. Anyone singing flat would have ruined it, very talented band. .I used to work with the violinists dad, Frank ,who also was a good violinist and expert sheet metal worker.

This was the Tour I taped in a nice club in DC- if I'm not mistaken. They were great as the reception to their performance showed. They really seemed to be enjoying the crowd getting off on their own special way of making music w/out copying The Renaissance of Relfs & McCarty nor the next generation which benefitted from the input of Jimmy McCarty.

I use this song to interest (some) students to history. The song is from ~1720s, and opens up a whole history. Well played by SS!!
