Saw them at the garden in the late eighties with fairport convention and rennasaince.made maddie laugh.i meant to yell you have a beautiful voice.it came out as you are beautiful.that got madie to laugh 😂.
This (Prickly Bush) is a serious song about someone about to hang, yet Steeleye Span sing it utterly devoid of any feeling, but just in an upbeat boppy fashion. Maddy Prior is grinning away as though it is a joyful song. Quite bizarre. Listen to the Nic Jones version and hear how it should be treated.
@@coolrocknroll Generally, I preferred Fairport Convention. The John Renbourn Group was quite good as well, I think. I liked the Waterstones and when Martin Carthy joined them. The Raggle Taggle Gypsies by them is lovely as is Gloryland. Nic Jones is, for me, unequaled as a folk solo artist. Best wishes to you.
Well since Steeleye Span concentrates on saving old like really old songs you'd have to say he either made up his variation or borrowed it from them..of course in those times people performing would borrow each others material lots...good song recorded by one could then trickle down to others and there'd be 5-8 or so versions.
The otherworldliness of Steeleye is captivating. Gives you hope.
Great Folk Rock Vibes...Masters !...
The greatest folk rock band ever!
Well said!
Real folk sung as folk and real rock played as rock. Not many "folk rock" bands can say that, actually.
I do agree!
Thanks for posting this. Definitely one of my fav Steeleye Span albums. Bonus: the cattiness in the interview segments is priceless!
***** My pleasure! a shame if this were lost in the archives. God bless youtube!
Brilliant in any decade - no-one will ever top them
i saw Steeleye Span in Kristiansand in Norway in 1974 ... alot from ''Now we are six''
loved them since ...
I'm slowly realizing this band didn't ever 'lose it'
Prickly Tree really reminds me of the lyrics and song by Led Zeppelin on Led Zeppelin 3 ''The Gallows Pole''.
go span just getting better like a good wine
they are still brill
I love it when Maddy dances.
Thank you for posting.
Check out Anne Briggs's "Gathering Rushes in the Month of May". Very pretty. Shocked to hear it here
Pure joy.
Great. Thank you.

The Time lp I find painfully naff. Twa corbies and the cutty wren redeem it tho.

@@robertm7071 Ah, you have impeccable taste. I covered a Pentangle song a while ago, try searching for ‘sixstring steve willy o winsbury’.
@@coolrocknroll Beautiful. Thank you
@@coolrocknroll Agreed those are the best songs. Cutty Wren is viscerally pagan - the voices sound non-human somehow.
Steeleye are like Yes to Fairport’s Rolling Stones, they’re interesting but they don’t swing. Still a very worthy 2nd place IMHO (ducks for cover).
I beg to differ.
No need to duck for cover, the mighty Fairport are great but you must admit once Sandy Denny left they were never the same.
Watching this epic concert in May 2017. This first track? is it a derivative of 'Gallows Pole' by Led Zep? Or maybe they based it on this song?
idiot

See also Gallows Pole by Leadbelly. (1939) All derived from traditional folk song. en.wikisource.org/wiki/Gallows_Pole
wot year is this
Did somene offer Gay Woods a saucer of milk before her interview? Talk about Ms Grumpy!
between sandy and maddy, i always thought maddy was a better singer.
+doug marcus both great,,,,,,,,,,,,,,why compare at all....why
well said. there is certain sassiness that maddy has that made her fort me the better singer.
you think right....maddy has more...mutch more emotions in the voice
Of course She was
maddy has got very pretty wobblers
Wobblers?
led zepp gallows pole!
This is when Steeleye really started to completely suck.
