It amazes me as to why the Shulman brothers wouldn't support this project. This band has treated the music of Gentle Giant with the respect that it deserves, and put a fresh face on it as well. The songs are beautifully rendered. A new generation deserves to hear this, especially since pop music is dominated by so much canned, packaged, formulaic junk.
Dont know about the Shulman issue, but these people are certainly doing superb work with GG songs. Love it. Not to mention, old past performances (all groups) have pretty poor sound.
Whilst I agree with that intro, the entire song is absolutely phenomenal. For me, this song is the masterpiece of the early 70's. My ears and mind approve.
WOW! This is AMAZING! Memo to Derek and Ray: there's not a Gentle Giant fan in existence who isn't totally thrilled and energized by hearing Three Friends perform these beautiful songs. And the potential for new fans is massive. Just sayin' . . .
Kerry Minnear is such a hero to me. Absolutely one of my favorite musicians. That being said, this was beautiful to see. Such a brilliant performance that I forgot KM wasn't involved after the first guitar break. I would see this band anytime and anywhere.
On many so called lists - Acquiring the Taste is often given lower marks - Still it remains my favorite Gentle Giant album . That hasn't changed in over 52 years. Great job guys on this one and your live version of the house the street the room - Glad to see Gary Green get his star on he walk of Fame in his home town - best guitarist I have heard in a long long time - why I got my SG
About 15 years ago someone said "aah you like King Crimson, Yes, Zappa, Curved Air......have you ever listened to Gentle Giant?" ... "No" says I (thinking I am probably not missing much)...What the hell was I thinking! This is seriously impressive musicianship. Complex without sounding forced. Individuals serving the composition. Magic! Keep playing lads - this music deserves to be heard.
This piece was written in the studio as an experiment. In an interview I believe Derek Shulman revealed that they basically put down a metronome track and began writing whatever came out, adding and layering as they went. He then added that he doesn’t recommend it as a way of writing music.
I don't know how these guys do it so perfect! I always thought no one on this planet could ever be able to even try to come near Gentle Giants. Well these guys managed...they actually made my day!
I saw them on the tour with Kerry and on other occasions too. Last time I sat next to Malcolm's proud parents and Pugwash was sitting in front on me! @@mrskinszszs
Most have no earthly idea of the effort to chart, arrange, dedication for perfection and production much less who GG was all about. Thank you for making this and all you did to make it killer!
So well done, beautiful music, so well composed by Gentle Giant 40 years ago; and now so well played by Three Friends. Dedication and art as well as skill.
Saw these guys outside of Philly past June- with a fill in singer because Mick Box apparently had immigration issues- and they were just overwhelmingly awesome. Totally blown away. Thank you, thank you Gary and Malcolm for pulling this off. My buddies and I just watched awestruck hearing music that we thought we'd never hear from a stage ever again. With or without the Shulmans, god bless- and long live- GG.
I've been waiting for something like this for 40 years. I use to play this album all the time in Crested Butte when I was working at Charlie's Bath hous in the mid 70's. Excellent performances by everyone, and a great facsimile sound. Thanks so much for reviving this classic music.
I want to hug all of you guys. This is incredibly impressive. I was like "What are they going to do when they get to the harmonized vocals?" Then I saw and was like 0_0
I was thinking that too, “Can they actually pull it off?!”. And they did! The first Gentle Giant CD I bought was Octopus in 1992, and I was hooked. I immediately went and found Acquiring the Taste. This song floored me! I had never heard harmonies like that.
I listen gentle giant since i was 23 yrs old (like 7 years now), and is incredible how their music increases in substance over the years. For me, this is the main characteristic of a great band. I'm not talking about their lyrics like most people could think, but about their harmony. It's sad how people of my age don't like them. You guys not only sound amazingly like them, but also your live perform can be apreciated even more than the live performance of the band itself! Greetings from Brazil.
so great. It makes me listen to the parts even closer. Funny, the thing I kind of miss the most from the original is, of all things, the reverb on the drums. Iconic reverb usage in my ancient memory banks. Not complaining, just memories of old days coming through. I listened to Three Friends LP over and over the year I went to junior college, from one speaker no less.
The vocals on this are ridiculously good, in fact everything is just ridiculously good, bands aren't supposed to be able to play like this live!!! Really wish I could have saw this lineup, wasn't born in GG's heyday sadly, and just discovering these guys all too late.
I can see where one might see repeating bars as "redundant". I personally see that as an obvious tongue-in-cheek humorous approach to not taking oneself too seriously. GG did it all the time. Symmetry in music can get stupidly predictable and boring. Not only would they run a "riff" into the ground once in a while, but they would tweak it, make fun of it, use retards and adagios...as if to see if we are paying attention. They used subtle humor in many of their songs. Pure genius in my eyes.
finally i can hear the harmonies properly! brilliantly worked out and done guys. opening song of their best album by far. please tell me you do 'edge of twilight'. (i'll click around)
One of my favorite GG songs amongst so many. Really love the way Three Friends performs it. Brilliant to say the least and so was GG who I got hooked on when I saw them live unintentionally back in the 70's. They blew me and my best friend away and made sure we never missed a show after in my area. They were pure magic.
I remember it was 72 when I first heard this song. It FLOOOOORED ME into ECSTACY. Talk about SPELLBOUND. ALWAYS AND FOREVER A TOP GG masterful work of art
I saw Giant in Rochester, and during the Freehand tour in Buffalo- great of course, but listen to this guy's voice! And the music- a little heavier, superb! Three Friends play it so perfectly, and with such soul that they sound obsessed with their love for the stuff! The Shulmans ought not to be a little uncomfortable- in fact, they should be supportive! In fact, it wouldn't hurt them to do the odd guest appearance with Three friends!
Acquiring remains my absolute favorite GG recording. It's such a shame that so little of the Phil era live recordings have come to light. We are well served for the later period. Still it's utterly wonderful to hear these awesome musicians reproducing these great tracks. But I can't help wishing the Shulman's were involved.
I can't believe Gary Green is the only active GG He's seen everything They were unbelievable in the 70's saw the show twice in the states and their technique was mad crazy!
Really impressive. It’s not easy to emulate the Shulman’s or Minnear. Luckily Green is still there to give an helping hand. I’ve always loved Gentle Giant and I had quite a few of their albums when I was in my early teens. I saw them live too :) Music to open your mind.
Excellent stuff, chaps! Keep up the good work, & a happy Christmas & prosperous new year to you all.... Looking forward to more brilliant music from you!
He is, truly! What's cool is he sort of blends the belting-out power of Derek Shulman with the softness of Kerry Minnear's voice: kind of a miracle to get a guy like that to front a GG cover group!
Who is/was the current lineup, at that time? I believe Kerry Minnear had left, out of a desire to respect the Shulmans' wishes for the group not to continue performing Gentle Giant songs. But Gary Green is still in, yes?

Pretty sure everybody was wanting to see the xylophone solo but the camera wasn't on it. It sounded like the real deal or was it a keyboard part? Never saw on e in the room while the camera panned around the rest of the sound.
Fantastic ! I always loved this track and the rendition here is wonderful ! (Funny but it seems the bass player made a wrong note at 6.01, check it out).

Today there are the Maneskin ! 😖😖😖😖 What happened to the mankind?? I think we are rolling down to the end.
I'm not kidding when I say that the synth introduction to this song is one of the most magical and haunting pieces music I ever heard.

WOW Gary Green's 3 FRIENDS dolng amazing rare renditions of Gentle Giant songs I missed LIVE before 1974
This is excellent. I'm so happy prog is in resurgence, in all its mad glory. GG were the best of the lot.

Gentle Giant was so far ahead of their time. Often imitated, but never duplicated.
Fantastic and wonderful, but I disagree not “ahead of their time”
The original was art, thank you Gentle Giants. This is to art thank you Three Friends.
Hail and praise the Three Friends for keeping the fire burning so brilliantly.

I actually like this version more than the original... and that itself was flawless!!. Awesome.
Yes, me too !!!!, but remember that is easier to improve that to create something. And the equipments weren´t the same in the `70 that nowadays

So much ahead of their time... Still can't understand how they get to combine notes the way they do and make it sound that great! Awesome!

AMAZING ! Gives me shivers to hear this again... and so well played.
Super bien interprété, Gentle Giant est indémodable, car sa musique est un classique de la morceau progressive. Bravo aux musiciens.

My favorite track on Acquiring the Taste. Nice version here. ❤
Wonderful tribute to the finest progressive band ever to have graced a stage.

His voice is so suitable for this song!
I mean this song was for Phil or Kerry, and could never be sung by Derek.
High class! Gentle Giant lives on!
No live recording on RUclips of Gentle Giant playing this song in the old days! :-(
This is great, I hope they still will do some more shows. I'll be there. This is easily some of the best music ever written and performed.

This is not Gentle Giant, Giant sold out to the American commercial market in the 1990's and died.
Come on guys! Come and play in Italy, the country that has sempore acclaimed as the best progressive rock band
Great tune--Like a Beethoven's 5th of Rock & Roll.
Some real theme & development going on here.

Quasi meglio della versione originale, specie nella parte cantata

I think Pantagruel is a character in a novel by Francois Rabelais, a 16th century French writer.

Whose camera work is this? I'd make it to be at least 2 cameras from the cuts and cross-fades. Nicely done, all!
Where are you Three Friends? I hope you're still together. I wouldn't stand another GG split-up
