I was born in 1962, but I have 4 brothers older than me. My Mom didn't care much for the big Rock and Roll but she did like Gentle Giant. She said it's modern Classic Music. I have all their CD's. I'm 60 years old now and I still love them as much then when I was young.
Gary Green (guitar and vocals), Malcolm Mortimore (drums), Roger Carey (bass and vocals), Andy Williams (guitar), Kerry Minnear (piano and keyboards), Mick Wilson (lead vocals). Phil Shulman was involved as a lyricist, while Ray and Derek stayed out of the project.
Gentle Giant at Rider College in New Jersey was my first concert in 1974. The audience was giving standing ovations standing on their chairs. My friend and I snuck backstage to meet the band. The image sticks in my mind.
I am a Gentle Giant fan since 1972, have listen to their albums hundreds of time. I always come back to Gentle because this group is so amazing and the music makes me dreaming the same way it used to when I was 15! This is very very nicely done. Great to have some members of that group amongst us again, for our own pleasure and for others who wish to acquire the taste .....
Trust me, people may think that young people do not listen to good music like this amazing song of GG, trust me, we do. The work that GG did in this album (Three Friends) is one of their finest works ever performed. Thank you sirs, your music will be always beloved. Long life to prog rock!

I didnt recognise gary green , the last time i saw him was in 76 at birmingham town hall, i recognised his playing though...and this track is spot on just like the vinyl version.
Shades of Soft Machine, E.L.P., and Chapman, Whitney Streetwalkers/ Free, and non the worse for it. All of a similar era, and boy do I wish I was back there again. Real musicians, some classically trained, pushing the boundaries without even realising it, takes me back to gentler times. Thanks guys.
Unbelievable. This video made my day. I think this Gentle Giant song was released around 1972. 40 years ago! Thank you Gary Green for keeping this music alive!
Got to see GG in the early 70's at the Liverpool Stadium and they were really, really good live - one of my favourite gigs. Watching the musicians change their instruments a lot will stick with me. Three Friends is still my favourite album/CD by them. This version by Three Friends is wonderful :-)
Per me "School Days" è uno dei migliori brani mai composti nel progressive! Ovviamente i musicisti sono fantastici: suonare un brano così complicato e complesso richiede capacità musicali e ritmiche mostruose! BRAVI !!!
I grew up listening to Gentle Giant, buying all of their LP that I still have. I recognized a magic in their music at that time, that same magic that is still here today, despite of these crazy days. I was so fascinated that I personally built and painted a life-size mask of the Giant portrayed on the cover of the first album.
Funny how many seem to find this song the weak link on the Three Friends album. It's am amazing composition and execution - so much going on, so many phases. To see it performed in one take is fantastic. I saw these guys in Montreal a few years back. They were absolutely amazing!
Wow, that is a flawless rendtion, people! The three friends album is big on my list "what unmissable albums to take with you to an uninhabitated island".
Just WOW.. a very beautiful and technical song.. Thank you GG... I am still waiting for a reunion...... Last saw Gentle Giant in NYC 1978? at the Palladium.. A fantastic show in Quadraphonic.!!
Stunningly beautiful and hauntingly reminiscent of my school days listening to this wonderful classic from Gentle Giant. The first song I ever listened to from GG was "Boys in the Band" and I can honestly say that it changed my musical life in so many ways. A huge thank you to "Three Friends" for taking me back to a place not often visited but never ever forgotten. Bravo and Cheers!
I love the whole revisiting of these amazing pieces of music! So great to see Gary Green still doing his thing. That's not Kerry Minnear on keys, it's John Donladson. Kerry was in the first incarnation of Three Friends but left. There are videos of TF which include both John and Kerry on keyboards. Amazing stuff and I'm dying to see them perform, although I've just found out that Gary has recently been in hospital after a heart attack and has had a stent fitted. Speedy recovery to you Gary!
Wow, you guys have just broken my head! As a boy I thought no-one could ever play as well as the real GG, and now at 35 I'm floored by how well you all play! Thankyou for uploading this, you've made my day. (btw the vocals are exceptionally good).
Imitation is the best form of flattery...And, this imitation would make the Shulman brothers blush...Great job...Anyone doing Giant is an amazing person to me. : )
WOW! A freshly filmed Three Friends rehearsal? It sounds totally great. Great footage, feels like we're in the studio with you guys. I cannot wait until the Keswick Theater show on June 20th.
I'm totally speechless. I've seen Three Friends live (with Kerry) in Shoreham a few months ago (which was really amazing), but this, with the sound and video is just an amazing new way to experience GG music. This songs is one of my favorite songs, and this performance gave it a whole new life.
I'm blown away! Awesome performance guys!!! I grew up listening to Gentle Giant and never got to see them perform live. This is brilliant! So tight and clean sounding. It took me a bit to realize you weren't Gentle Giant.

These guys were always such a breath of fresh air! Whereas rock bands in their heyday were all about verse, chorus, powerchords, and lead solos, lots of dramatic screaming - fairly predictable approaches. In contrast, GG songs are always beautifully delicate, haunting, nostalgic, magical, complex, reflective - and the lyrics typically tell an imaginative story which the music appropriately illustrates - often with interesting explorations at an unhurried pace. They were truly creating wonderful art that would stand the test of time. These boys really understand the art and craftmanship that goes into all great music - and execute it with passion, patience and exuberance. It truly does not do GG justice to merely label them as a Prog band, because their complex movements and sudden time signature shifts, all that, weren't, like so many "progs," just made for the sake of dynamics and dramatics. Rather, their quirks are typically supportive of the feeling and visually suggested trajectory of the songs' story arcs.
