I'm a beginner and have been so focused on learning all the different watercolor techniques that this video is a welcome relief...it looks like so much fun using that brush!
Hi Lindsay, I think they are all beautiful and anyway no two flowers are the same in real life. You are such a beautiful and talented painter, I love watching you paint especially with watercolor. Thanks for a lovely video.
Happy Valentine's Day Lindsay!!! to you and your family. I love the orange flowers in the vase you showed at the beginning. These look really fun and cool!
You are an awesome teacher!! Thanks so much for this lesson that actually covered so many points. Roses are one of my favorite flowers and watercolor is my favorite medium! I need many, many more hours of practice, but that is fun also! Thank you Lindsay.👏
Thanks Lindsay for a terrific video. Roses and watercolors are two of my favorite things, but am struggling with the two together. Love your videos. Thanks for sharing.
Cool, I don't have a quill , but I have a pointed oval wash brush, so I used that. Also went with more of a mum. My leaves should just leave. Lol. Thanks Lindsay. I love that paper. I don't always feel worthy of my precious large cotton sheets of paper. 😐😑💙
Your bell was unrung! I'm just angry about that! Now I'm going to watch the video. Danged ol RUclips. Gorgeous and informative as always. I'm liking the feeling of painting loosely. And the final product generates relaxation, I think, for the viewer. Anywho, thanks for the video. 💗
Thanks for this tutorial Lindsay. I recently purchased a Paul Rubens quill size 4 and have no idea how to use it. They definitely take practice and some getting used to. I wish I could review the Paul Rubens but it's the only quill brush I've used. It seems good quality though. Minimal shedding. That's all I've got, lol.
Thanks Lindsay. Good practice for me. My first csrd is alwsys my best. I think you're right. I must be more relaxed or something.I must be the odd duck that doesn't like to do flowers. I do some just because it's good to be well rounded. I esp don t like roses. I love them In real life insitou, not cut. I respect all their properties and uses just to have th em be a bouquet. Omg, I think my daughter is right. I'm turning into a hippie. 🤣😉💙
This is awesome Lindsay; I need to reach outside my comfort zone and try a loose floral like this.I have the larger Neptune ones and I love them for skies, seascapes etc, because I actually tend to not get enough water in my mix and end up with colors that are too concentrated and my edges sometimes end up hard, and while I tend to reach for other brushes to get a more controllable point, these really do help me get the softness when it's needed. This is nothing on you, but I notice the edges on this look slightly hard and I may be brave and add clean water or additional soft glazes around the outer edges; it's only paper, right? Thanks for everything always!
This looks like something I might actually attempt. Except I'm not sure about the brush, the biggest I have is a 12 Silver Brush, I've only used it for backgrounds. Might have to give it a try.
Wow..makes me want to try my quill..that id given up.. in favour of my Silver brushes! Which do.you prefer Lindsay. Do you have similar lesson for silver brushes..loved the yellow chrisanthemum cards too..thank you 🤗
I know this is an older video but I’d like to know which paper you are using (didn’t quite get the product you mentioned) and whether you still recommend this paper. Thanks. BTW, I love everything loose, thank you for this tutorial.
Hi Lindsey, I love this picture. Would using a round brush give you the same effect on the leaves? I don't have any quills and I really like the way you're doing the leaves. Thanks for taking time to answer. And thank you so much for all you teach us.
Hi! I was thinking of investing in one of these brushes for my collection. You mentioned in the video that I should get a size zero to start with? And they should only be used for watercolour, as I’ve seen people use them for gouche. Thanks! 💜
Hi Lindsay. I just received my portable painter this week. I filled it with the Daniel Smith split primary, yellow ochre, burnt a sienna, hooker's green, teal, Payne's Grey, and perylene green. This feels wrong. What 12 would you suggest? I'll probably switch out the perylene for dioxazine purple and keep the ochre and sienna. That leaves 3 spots up for grabs. Thankfully I got the one that comes with 12 extra half pans.
for mine, I use the 6 daniel smith split primary colors, burnt sienna, sap green, yellow ochre, colbalt teal, diox violet and the last would depend where I was going to paint and what color would be most convienient to me, there are no rules, The first 9 I recommend will allow you to mix most anything. Do what feels right, you might need to take it out to paint and adjust. Also it is nice to switch it up once in a while. For instance I might want potters pink if I was going to sketch in the city as I can use ti to mix granulating greys and browns.
Great loose flower tutorial Lindsay! I will have to try it with the quill brush I got in my Raphael travel she. Though that brush seems to be stiffer then what you’re using. Quick question. The white surface you are working on. Is that the Jane Davenport splat mat? And If so what is the little plastic looking palette bit in the left side? It looks attached to the mat somehow.
this is the Waffle Flower Media mat, I am testing it out for them, I think it will be available for purchase in a couple of months. It is thicker than the JD splat mat and has a lip all the way around for keeping the media contained and wells for paint or to press an ink cube. I like it! The only downside is that it is no longer bright white, it stains but it is easy to clean and it doesn't gale on camera which was a problem I had with the splat mat but both are wonderful products and I think about the same price. The splat mat is substantially larger though and flat so it depends on your needs what will work best.
A sumi brush is usually a very soft and limp goat hair brush with even longer bristles. The ferrule is often read or plastic and inserted in a bamboo jandle. There is less spring on the sumi e and you use the brush wet as well as almost dry for texture effects. In other words similar but different;)
I bought the squirrel brushes from Creative Mark on jerrys artarama, they dont retain the point like yours have. Im wondering if Im doing something wrong? Is there something I can do to help reshape them?
hmmm, mine have been used tons and keep a very sharp point, I usually cold press paper usually, areyou using a rough paper that might wear them down or storing them in a way the bristles can get misshapen?
@@thefrugalcrafter Ive mostly used them on canson watercolor paper and aquabee. They're stored flat. I noticed these issues when I first got them too.
Le Celly I have that set, I think it’s the same. I reshape the Brush by leaving in some Brush soap and letting it dry upright in a jar. The smaller the size, the less point it seems.
I have a set of 3 Danube Quill by Creative Mark, on sale again at Jerry’s Artarama this week. www.jerrysartarama.com/creative-mark-danube-watercolor-quill-kazan-brushes Love this set and Lindsay’s videos and Teachable lessons

Wow this is lovely, you make it look so easy , I must have a go at this ,,,xxx ❤️💜💙
I inheirited a few of these brushes, but haven't tried them yet. Time to give them a try. Thanks for the inspiration.
Nice rose card..... I love the orange flowers and vase painting you showed at the beginning ... maybe a tutorial on that :)
It’s beautiful I’m still learning to paint with water Colors I am going to try this too!

I believe it was an arteza watercolor greeting card. I still like them but I think they are sold out.

Sure, look for one that is soft with a nice point. Remember to practise as it may feel awkward at first.

Well gouache won't hurt them but you need to really water it down as the brush is so soft.
@@thefrugalcrafter Wonderful, thanks for that.
Beautiful Lindsay! Did I hear you say you are working on a chalk pastel class? I would love to take this type of class. Sue

I am having trouble locating a size 0 quill brush. Any tips?
What are the differences in a quill vs a sumi brush?

There is less spring on the sumi e and you use the brush wet as well as almost dry for texture effects. In other words similar but different;)
