The Marder lives!
World of tanks flash back
The Marder was armed with a 20Mike Mike if my memory is solid on this.
The Ukrainian forces are arming this beast with a 100 mm.
Also known as a can opener! LOL
As I see it the two worst jobs in the Russian army in Ukraine is a Russian flag officer and of course a tanker.
Nope those are not flying saucers 🛸 in the Ukrainian skies those are Russian turrets.

It goes without saying “ air bursts”
Great video. Thanks for posting. Some of the other commenters already opined my own thoughts, that this Ukrainian vehicle re-design is directly reminiscent of German WWII modifications by taking T38, Pzkw 1-2 chasses, removing original production turrets, and replacing with 75MM PAK anti-tank guns with a welded surround of steel plates to protect the gun crews. Overall the concept worked somewhat well for the Germans for the most part, particularly on the Eastern Front. So let's see how this goes. Thanks again for posting such a cool video.
To me I am more inclined to see a connection to the Swedish Stridsvagn 103 (or "S-Tank").
Can certainly see that too.
Not only the germans built such improvised vehicles, look at the russian SU 76 or british Archer.
Of the Romanian tacams
@@drudriver3660 Keep on smoking that stuff, mate, maybe you'll see a ukrainan victory in all of this.
The doctrine for MT-LB usage was exactly like this: it is neither APC (slow and ineffective on roads), nor IFV (slow and under-armed), nor a reconnaisance vehicle (slow and big), nor an artillery tow vehicle (not extremely passable). It is just something. You can do whatever you want with that and it will have equally mediocre performace everywhere. Which is strength.
MT-LB is an artillery tow vehicle
@@BlaBla-pf8mf Yeah, also mediocre one.
Looks like the Nashorn from ww2.
Yes.
Nashorn's rifled gun was only 88mm. This thing shoots a 100mm smooth bore anti-tank gun with HEAT rounds. Awesome.
@@davebauman4991 key word, I said it " looks like "
This can really help Ukrainian artillery for better and quicker movement, this makes more easier to move around
Twilight 2000 becomes real life. Imagine a version of these in 1944.
Understand the 122mm decision the Soviets made for the JS series, but would still argue they'd have kicked real ass if they'd taken the 100mm instead, early enough, and made a triple threat gun-vehicle family: their version of the PAK 43, a good Artillery Gun, and a good AA gun.
Congratulations for using WW2 designs. I hope they don't forget to mount a Maxim mg on top as well:)
Them Maxims are undergoing upgrades like belt-less ammo feeding mechanism, IR & night sights, muzzle brake, ceramic armored face plate, gyro stabilization, etc. Wasteful "spray & pray" is finished. Drone efficiency is evolving.
You can see at 3:04 but the MTLB already has a small turret with a 7.62 mm PKT machine-gun.
Very interesting. I think it now looks a bite more Hummel like then the earlier one.
Looks like I need to do a new Video. Hoepfully one of these things ends up in the German Tank museuma after this war :)
More likely Kubinka or some Polish location since geography matters.
It looks and compares more to the Nashorn
So this is not the same vehicle one as the previous one, but with upgrades?
That's pretty neat seeing the birth of this seemingly standardised vehicle if it moves forward.
back to the shop to fine tune the sights and away they go merrily off to kick some ass with their new toy and a drone i just love seeing creative minds making something out of junk
So it's basically a modernized WW2 tank destroyer...
Not really. Tank destroyers were built on tank chassis.
@@zoiders Tank destroyers can really be almost anything. there were tank destroyers that were jeeps with a 37mm on the back. The Chieftan has a great video on tank destroyers, if you haven't seen it already.
The concept remains...

This is WORSE that WWII tech in that the crew got to dismount and use a long lanyard to fire it.
This would seem to be a puff piece for the morale of Western Consoomers with little knowledge tbh, Ukrainians are brave, not stupid and so wouldn´t use this if they had quite literally anything else to choose from.
It won't last long the way it gets shoved a meter or more every shot. You can see the effect on the track ready to fall off. It needs a blade at the back.
pretty normal for low weight vehicles and high calibre guns lmao
If you look closely. Tank is out of gear so when it fires it rolls back on its tracks absorbing the recoil.
So essentially a modern take on the Marder Tank Destroyer.
No, not at all besides both having a gun but it doesn´t work like a Tank destroyer since they A: can´t fire the non-stabilized gun when moving and B: the crew got to dismount and use a bloody lanyard to fire it, this is sub-par for WWII tech.
It looks cool for the uneducated masses but this is just a puff piece bit with very limited use.
More like an assault gun meant for attacking fortifications.
@@baneofbanes True Why would smack a tank with this when you have so many AT shoulder fire armaments Better used with VT fused Ammo to strafe trucks and personnel carriers
Love your videos, I get a little excited evertime you upload on RUclips.
I'm still waiting for the Ukrainian version of the Stug III/IV to roll out! 👍👍
The Stugs was the favorite tanks from the germans during WW2 because they reliability , efficiency and low profile...
And here we thought that gun-based tank destroyers were obsolete
Not quite yet, it’s still kicking
Both Ukrainians that Russians think exactly the contrary about the MT-12 AT gun.
First ones have constantly kept them in service and the second ones are re-introducing them back as a STANDARD weapon i.e. they would kept it in their regular units even after the war would be finished.
both of them have infact found confirmed also during such conflict that although its own APFSDS rounds has not anymore the capacity of engage modern tanks on the frontal arc this doesn't modify very much its own utility as even before they were not intended to be used in such a way but in flanking ambushes leaving instead to the heavy ATGM (that are part of the same speciality i.e. Artillery and Missile Troops) the head on engagements.
Kid: "I want a Stryker MGS"
Mom: "We have a Stryker MGS at home"
Stryker MGS at home:
So, they've made something like World War 2 Germany's Sd.Kfz. 124 Wespe or Hummel? It seems to have the same deficiencies, notably uncovered fighting compartment that makes the artillery crew vulnerable to the weather and shrapnel. Still, it gets a powerful gun to the battlefront quickly and allows for a quicker "shoot and scoot" to avoid counter-battery fire.
I would say that it is a nice improvisation. The limits will be that it is primarily direct attack and would face difficulty in areas where advanced ATGMs were present. The aiming systems would be a bit crude as well. Seems like something that Ukraine could do with lots of obsolete guns and recoiless rifles.
The UAF use apps like Kropyva and Armor which contain artillery tables for all kinds of ordnance. They assist with indirect fire for anything heavier than a machine gun. I'm sure this vehicle will be used as a 'pocket SPG'.
@@volodymyrsukhyna5932 Except that the 100mm anti-tank gun here would require testing to see the way to get it set for indirect fire. Given the limited elevation capability and shell without variable propellant that means that it would struggle with having a large range of choices to target the shells. There is nothing wrong with that. It is just a direct fire weapon. This is not magic.
@@jimsackmanbusinesscoaching1344 UAF know how to operate mt-12 as field gun(indirect fire weapon) this version has improved elevation arc in comparison to the 1st vehicle, also is looks like it is very good for ambush. Getting Marder vibes here
May it and its crew(s) have good hunting. I was wondering what the 'chute /' exhaust' is on the left side. It seems to come from just in front of the fighting compartment and end just above the track.
what we saw loaded was a saboted penetrator rod round
They've literally made a Marder III scaled up 30-50%
God bless "The Ukrainian ingenuity" nice job.🇺🇦👍🙏
It may look like something the Soviets made, but with the right recon support and camouflage, it could prove to be an excellent ambush machine
Kinda reminds me of some WW2 German SP guns like the Wespe...
with all the artillery and drones about, needs a roof! but good for 2nd line units, who lack fire power support.
I wonder if they could just cut the roof down the middle and bend it up for the side armor.

Next, large auto-loading twin mortars mounted on another modified troop transporter.
looks like a good ol' fashioned assault gun. go for it, ukraine!
I thought it's was an improvised SPG9 or BMP type gun to shoot that ammo when I saw the title this morning
I seriously hope these lads have made a serious study of the tactics American Wolverine Tank Destroyers employed during World War Two.
At least give them some overhead cover and a machine gun mount.
Two biggest dangers to them are being counterbatteried and dismounted infantry.
for the MG mount , the MT-LB already has one built in, with the little MG turret mounted on the forward right
as for counter battery protection
first the issue would be finding enough armour plate to make the roof
secondly you can see the built up shields and the gun shield don't cover entirely the crew when they are riding standing, so adding a roof might complicate operations
additionally the guns emits a lot of fumes from the breech end, so a closed compartment would quite quickly become unlivable
if it was a purpose build vehicle, i would agree, but they are quite literally welding a field gun on top of a MT-LB, so they have to work with limitations of both platforms
@@quentintin1 Also, you spect to not be machine-gunned while driving SPGs. Should not be a frontline unit
Improvised self propelled guns, this war really is ww2 reboot
When Ukraine finally kicks the Rus out their territory, they will have one heck of time getting equipment standardization in place!
Necessity is the mother of invention and the Ukrainians are very inventive.
I would like to know how they can maintain the engine since the cannon barrel seems to be above the top hatch for the engine. They might be able to rotate the gun enough to the right so they can open it but I dont know. But if they cant open the top hatch they would have to service the engine through the inside which is possible for some maintenance (There are detachable panels to get access to the engine from the crew compartment and cabin). Or would they just remove the gun for engine maintenance?
It reminds me of the SU-76 used by the Soviet Red Army in WWII.
Nuts that a natural gas company built this
Really is.
Modern version of the SU-85A
I'm wondering about the actual functionality/effectiveness of this vehicle in combat.
I would very much like to see it in action
The Gun is quite old but luckily the Russians are running out of the newer tanks that resist shots from it
Would destroy bunkers and could provide cover to infantry assaulting trench systems.
I bet we’re gonna see this thing as a premium tank in war thunder a few years from now lol
The Germans did this sort of thing a lot on WW2.
"Parry this filthy casual" Said the ukrainian gunner before full sending a 100mm
That's a diy tank destroyer 😳
I hope nobody misses the critical point here.
Ukraine has captured so much Russian equipment that it can now afford to spend weeks modifying and improvise entirely new weapons of a special purpose nature.
This is an intriguing commentary not just on Ukrainian success but Russian failures as well.
This is a palpable indication that Ukraine has achieved irreversible momentum.
Russia has many blood drenched and heart breaking days ahead.
That is the wages of being a thug be it a person or state.
The Germans did this a lot in WW2. The Yugoslav army and the republics did the same too in the 90s.
Necessity is the mother of invention. Slava Ukraine 👌
Like a old german anti tank vehicle
Once again we see the ingenuity and innovation of the Ukrainian people.
Even sexier than the Marder… still a place for assault guns and AT systems when fighting the Russians, hope they build a hundred more, now to make a mortar track for the 120mm system.
Pimp my MT-LB
The crew don't look hugely convinced by the system and I would have concerns about its ability to safely and accurately repeat serials when it comes to infantry calling down fire missions as it won't stay in one place when fired due to no hydraulic buffer. It's got uses in the direct fire role as an improvised assault gun.
I think it's okay as a stopgap measure or for second line TDF troops in case of enemy forces that somehow got behind the front lines. Definitely has room for improvement though.
you mean about them firing the dun disembarked and with a lanyard?
i would say it's possible the firing of the gun are tests to see if the construction survives the firing, so you stay out in case it suffers a rapid unscheduled disassembly
also it seem to be quite often the case with soviet field artillery that the crew is trained to take cover before firing the gun, so could be a hold from that
I agree they really need hydraulic "spades" or a dozer blade at the rear, to dig in under recoil so the gun gets stabilised after the first shot. With the current configuration, they have to re-aim after every single shot so their rate of fire in indirect fire mode will be very slow. Firing from outside with a lanyard is much less of a problem than the lack of repeatability.
@@Kaboomf Spades tend to be found on much bigger SP guns getting on for the 10" mark. A 4" gun system such as this shouldn't need one. The transmission clearly needs work to make it lock the tracks out and recoil management needs looking at. It's not usable in the indirect fire role in its current form. It would be better if it had simply been converted into a mortar carrier.
Gives off su76 vibes
Wasn't the original thing meant as a tank destroyer not as self propelled gun
Yes it was, it was described as a tank destroyer by UAF press but Ukrainian soldiers I've spoken to say they're mixed role with them often being used as an assault gun.

As an ex soldier i dont know why you would check your weapon after breaking into the enemy territory...
I don't think the term "tank destroyer" people in the comments are throwing around is accurate, this is simply an SPG or self-propelled gun, and frankly when has having a handy 100mm gun on tracks ever not been useful?

Definitely a threat!
No different to any artillery piece
Every MT-LB gun carrier is just another demonstration superior soviet design lol. this shows superior ruggedness and adaptability of soviet designs over western ones. meanwhile every Western system needs years of training just to know what button not to push. also i'd say the fall of the shots is hitting a pretty wide area. so this will be useless against mobile targets or well fortified ones as the RF will have much more counter battery on call.
Great follow up video! Ukraine is starving for artillery and tanks and desperately needs to fill the gap! Too much attention is paid to it's use as an anti-tank weapon against MBT-this gun can destroy everything else. Ukraine is finally putting anti-aircraft, recoilless guns and anti-tank guns on APC's and trucks-make defensive weapons(waiting for their prey.....) into offensive weapons to apply pressure on Russia. They need to proliferate the guns on the front lines to keep pressure on Russia. I have seen too many video's of Ukrainian solders complaining they can't punch back at incoming fire.
