How Ukrainians salvage damaged weapons as they wait for aid I DW News

- As aid has slowed to a trickle, Ukrainians have been forced to improvise to keep their frontline troops supplied. DW’s Nick Connolly takes a look at how they're coping in this exclusive report from a Ukrainian military facility.
These desperate measures are underway as lawmakers in the US have approved a bill providing almost 61 billion dollars worth of aid and military support to Ukraine. The package had been delayed for months due to cross-party wrangling. Democrats joined forces with some moderate Republican lawmakers to push the bill through, though the majority of Republicans voted against it.

Interchangeable standardized parts is the legacy of the Industrial Revolution. Standardized armaments that can swap parts.

It's less than 8% of our military budget, but it technically replaces older munitions that are going to be destroyed due to shelf life. And yes, we have to pay a exorbant amount to dispose of those weapons, possibly 1/2 the cost of what we are giving to ukraine. So in one way, we are saving the cost of disposal by letting ukraine dispose of them on the front lines.
Thanks for comment. You're an intelligent person who clearly understands the situation.
Exactly. Most people don't realize it costs 10k dollars to decommission a single stinger missile.
It's better just to empty out our old stocks to send to Ukraine. And then use the allocated funds to replenish it with newer equipment. In military terms, it's called force modernization. We do, after all, only have a limited storage capacity.
widely overlooked by the average viewer, good on ya for pointing this out.
@@paladro That's because it's by design. Politicians intentionally do not point us out to their constituents. That allows them to push their narratives to their base. In essence, by not giving all this information to citizens, they are not allowing them to make informed decisions when they vote. In my opinion, this is a way of imposing on people's free will.
Yeah and the disposal process is super bad for the environment so at least this is also getting the use out of them and it not all having been a waste

Oh, weapons cannibalism? Whew! Was worried for a minute.

Makes me laugh that most of the money is actually staying in America,America done exactly the same in ww2 with Britain!
The weapons are still going where they are needed, that is what's important, the thing that bothers me is that it took so long to make the decision!
We helped Russia too.
Totaling $11.3 billion, or $180 billion in today's currency, the Lend-Lease Act of the United States supplied needed goods to the Soviet Union from 1941 to 1945
We even did it for Russia, if you are of course speaking about the lend/lease agreements...
That's nothing to laugh about. This is common practice when it comes to foreign aid. Essentially a credit issued to foreign country to buy goods made by domestic companies. So, the money stays at home.
