0:40: Did anyone notice how Pryor is sweaty with stringy hair at the start of the scene, but when he sees Louis coming down the steps, he transforms into his old self? Healthy and glowing with his hair perfectly coiffed and his lesions gone. We all imagine ourselves as perfect in our most perfect dreams.
Thanks for pointing that out. Couldn't be done on stage, though.
@@marysueeasteregg Yes...the magic of television.
Yes, it's really subtle clever scenework. Also, this Louis is clearly a fantasy of a desperate, lonely broken heart and feverish mind, because the cynical, neurotic, self-conscious and self-centred Louis we know from the rest of the play up to the point would never say sincerely romantic and assertive lines like this aloud, nor would he perform a Broadway routine purely for Prior's pleasure and amusement--this is the ideal Louis that Prior most longs to be with and that the audience want him to be.
@@pendafen7405 You’re right. Louis was insufferable.
The reason for this is, that Heaven is real…
This scene always makes me cry. Beautiful.
"Dance with me babe..." and then the Moon River musical cue! Cried my eyes out!
I just posted that same phrase on another version - blows me away how 4 simple words convey so much Claude Renaud 2 years ago
Made me cry too.
@@StrangeLittleGirl44 years ago, 7 years ago. who invented years.
Tony Kushner wrote: "the music builds gradually into a full-blooded, romantic dance tune" in his script. :)
Nice!
R.I.P. Michael Gambon (Prior Walter Ancestor #1)
All these years on, I still can't decide whether I feel that Prior had deep genuine raw love for Louis as he was, or was just in love with the ideal of Louis and clinging to this fantasy (no judgement, in his same agonising situation anyone would crave love and support), As for whether Louis really loved Prior, that's a whole other more difficult question. It's interesting that in this adaptation we never once see them kiss romantically or passionately (with lips & tongue etc.), though 1:52 in this scene would have been an easy and obvious place to include one. We never know if we're seeing the end of a relationship still otherwise very much alive and kicking, or one that has already been fading out and dying long before the lesions appear.
This is my absolute favorite scene in Angels in America....Thank you Mark!
"Dance with me, babe..." and the music....ah!! there is no better choice for this scene...
“The world’s got so terribly, terribly old.” Words to live by!
What does that mean in the context of this scene?
@@pam0626 There are two Heralds that visit Prior. A Walters from the Dark Ages and a Walters from the Baroque era.
There is a distinct difference between how the Heralds interpret Prior's life, and the Baroque Herald remarks how much things have gotten old, but implies that they haven't changed.
All the Herald sees is two people dancing who are in love. Nothing terribly different from things from WHEN he hails. So from a literary criticism perspective (history), the juxtaposition of the Herald and Prior really is not antithetical at all. It is, in fact, quite relevant and tangible to both characters in the same time, despite the Herald being ethereal. They both feel the toll of time as history has affected it; Prior is suffering from a time-sensitive disease that is ravaging the gay population. Time too takes its toll on the Herald when he learns that his life is not the end of the Walter line, and that in fact, it has become multigenerational.
The world has gotten so old, and we are just specks of dusts in the primordial soup of the eons that will follow us.
@@MageSutek Thank you for the explanation. I’ve read it three times and it’s slowly sinking in. 🤪
@@pam0626 It is a TOUGH play and was required reading when I was a graduate student. I'm glad it helped.
@@MageSutek Yes! It is multilayered and filled with many historical references.
This part + moon river = 😢😢(everytime)
this scene is beautiful. by far one of my favorite plays and the screenplay definitely did it justice, too.
I f***** bawl everytime I watch this scene
It still brings tears to my eyes...
I adore this scene...even though it makes me cry every time
MOI aussi!
This scene, in movie or tv history, just makes you cry. It’s all about love.
beautiful and heartbreaking.
This isn't the Andy Williams cover... this is the original Henry Mancini version.
@Siosamh
No song specified in the actual script, I think. It merely says "beautiful music."
