To really understand why the others are performed the way they are you need the build up of the whole show. Is that all you think there is to it? You've got so many reasons for not being with someone, but Robert, you haven't got one good reason for being alone. Come on, you're on to something, Bobby. You're on to something. Someone to need you too much, Someone to know you too well, Someone to pull you up short And put you through hell. You see what you look for, you know. You're not a kid anymore, Robby. I don't think you'll ever be a kid again, kiddo. Being alive Being alive Being alive! Blow out the candles, Robert, and make a wish. *Want* something! Want *something!* Somebody, hold me too close, Somebody, hurt me too deep, Somebody, sit in my chair And ruin my sleep And make me aware Of being alive, Being alive. Somebody, need me too much, Somebody, know me too well, Somebody, pull me up short And put me through hell And give me support For being alive, Make me alive Make me alive. Make me confused, Mock me with praise, Let me be used, Vary my days. But alone is alone, not alive. Somebody, crowd me with love, Somebody, force me to care, Somebody, make me come through, I'll always be there, As frightened as you, To help us survive Being alive, Being alive, Being alive!

Yeah. It's Sondheim. Emotional, wrenching monologues set to music. Lay it all bare or don't bother. That's the vibe I got from all the best performances of his music.
Joaquin Phoenix was awesome as well, but I think Adam Driver was better, but the one who deserves to win is Robert Pattinson for The Lighthouse, as much as I loved Adam Driver in Marriage Story
Someone to hold me too close. Someone to hurt me too deep. Someone to sit in my chair, And ruin my sleep, And make me aware, Of being alive. Being alive. Somebody need me too much. I think having no claps at the end is such a great directorial decision. I like to think the claps were happening, but Charlie is so consumed by the after effects of divorce in isolating him from the rest of the world. He feels like nobody truly understands his feelings; no one can hear him. Claps often signify the applause of a performance too, but the lack of clapping tells us this is no longer a performance. He truly is the narrator of the piece.
I am! I can't stop. I find him to be a breath of fresh air amongst actors and actresses of our day. I would love to meet him and I don't say that about celebrities. I would want him to speak to my students.
I love that exhale he gives at the end because it shows how much he gets into the song and what it means to him. At the beginning he's sort of joking but by the end he's pouring his heart out in a way he knows how.
I really love that this performance doesn’t scream “incredible singer” like Charlie was secretly amazing the whole time, he just sings like a guy that has a theatre background, halfway decent, and better lyrical knowledge. In the show Company, this song is the Protagonist Bobby’s grand realisation that he is capable of love and is ready to be loved. However, this song comes after Charlie has lost everything except his son, he loved and was costed for it. Charlie is alone, but also incredibly present in the moment. He’s able to finally accept his loss and move on to the challenges ahead.
When his voice catches on "But alone" at 2:15, it's one of the most affecting moments of this entire wrenching movie. I also love the way the accompanist cues him for the second verse after he returns to the stage.
while watching the movie at this point I broke up in tears. He's so moving, with his voice and his marvellous ...hands...well yes, they can speak too, they can sing. Adam Driver is the best .
And the scene in the ending when he reads the letter, those three are the biggest heartbreaking moments of the movie. He's such an insane actor. Scarlett Johnson did an amazing job as well but Adam Driver had just that small edge over her.
I like how he starts off the first verse as a kind a of parody of the pain he is going through, sits back down and gets some perfunctory applause from his friends. Then he sits down, thinks a little and puts his finger up as if to say "I'm not done yet". As he progressed through the second verse, it become increasingly clear to his friends and to himself how cathartic this song really is. No one claps at the the end. His sigh at the end represents remorse about the past the a hope for the future at the same time. Been there.
That's the scene when I said: This is glorious... man, I did watch the rest of the movie before this scene, thinking about the reality we are, and when this dude, Adam Driver, started to sing, I thought: what's this?!! And when I paid attention to the lyrics and I got involved with the peaceful & harmful rythm, I just wanted to let off steam. I just wanted to cry. No lying. Amazing...
This movie made cry so much since I am a divorced person, my ex and I had the same exact problem: communication. Even if I’m remarried I cried so hard and my husband brought me a box of Kleenex and just said: I understand you. I’m grateful for that and I understand that the reason why I was with my ex was to learn and have two amazing children. Thank you my ex, my husband and my children for make being alive
i cried in the very beginning because of how charlie was talking about nicole, i cried in the middle because of henry getting closer to his mom, i cried when they had the argument in his new apartment, i cried when he sang this song, and i sobbed when he read the letter nicole made him edit: i also wanna add that i think its phenomenal that you can tell when his mood changes when he paused to sing the next part, he really is a phenomenal actor.
I cried and cried when I got to this part in the movie and when I read all of your comments I cried again ......I'll never call him any other name then Adam driver he is an awesome actor
My wife is recently coming through a major depression after having our 3rd child and it’s been a very tough season of our marriage, listening to and crying through this song helps me remember to be grateful for the bad along with the good and when dark thoughts of my own come it’s helpful to see the profound sadness on Adam Driver’s face who now longs for the struggle of his marriage…
This role in Marriage Story cemented me as a bona fide Adam Driver fan. I’ve seen him in Patterson, BlacKkklansman, Lucky Logan, the Dead don’t Die, silence, Star Wars and this. So versatile and so incredibly talented. An Oscar is an enviability in his future.
i’ve listened to this too many times and i still can’t express how much i absolutely LOVE Adam and his singing voice and his acting in general. This scene in the movie made me SOB. I love Adam and I pray that he wins an Oscar for this movie
After I saw Joker, I thought that no one would be able to match Joaquin Phoenix's performance. I thought he locked up the Oscar for best actor. After seeing this movie, I'm not sure at all anymore who should be considered the better actor this year in his movie.
Karen, there is a huge diference between the roling lead gave to both: Adam acted surrounded by greatest artists (SJ, LD, RL...), he was just another one and made his space with a great job. In the other hand, Phoenix was given an entire movie to be dedicated to. Do you remember any other performance at Joker? This is what turns AD great in Marriage Story: the film was not his but he acted so balanced with his partners that became great.
I love watching Adam in this scene. You get to see him expertly portray Charlie as hes finally getting a moment to to breathe and come to terms with everything that has been happening, through something familiar to him: the arts. I love it, so beautiful
I can't wait to hear him sing in Annette, he's so good! 😍 It's not even that he can sing either, it's the story he tells through the song, such a great actor
Out of all the phenomenally Acted out scenes in this movie, somehow when he sings with so much feeling, is what made me bawl like a child, felt like he was channeling his pain the only way he was familiar with, a domain that he could navigate and control in all this. The 'being alive' really hit hard, because of how intensely he sung it, how level his voice was, tho his predicament was anything but, and the irony is heartbreaking.
Adam Driver showed his entire repertoire of entertaining in an original role that resonates with people who have been affected by divorce. Way more deserving of an Oscar than an actor who's typecast himself as an "eccentric outsider" and plays the Joker, a character that's been around for 80 years.
That is how you act through song, it's not about perfect pitch and trilling through notes but connecting to the meaning and emotion of a song, why that character needs to sing that song at that particular moment, expressing his personal pain in Being Alive, we feel it, that's what touches us. Bravo Adam Driver.
It took me a while to see this film on NetFlix because it seemed depressing to me, potentially having me revisit painfully emotional experiences similar to those in my own life. I am the better for having seen it, as it is a truly great movie. This true-to-life cinematic achievement made me cry in some scenes, but it was a cathartic experience. All the film's elements resonated powerfully: The comfort of family in one's cozy home; the shock at experiencing what turns out as the unforesessn ephemeral nature of a relationship once thought to be ironclad to last forever; the raw nature of ensuing conflict and confrontation; the indignity of property distribution during divorce proceedings; the instant regret of hurful words uttered in anger; the palpable pain of separation; the vestigial affection post-separation; the ultimate peace one somehow makes with it all. I hadn't seen this lead actor in anything before, and all I can say is step on my throat, Adam Driver, you rudely large man; break my fingers, you brooding mountain; crush my rib cage, you load-bearing behemoth.
He has a perfect "Sondheim" voice in that it's real and emotional. He hits all the notes beautifully, finds the rhythms and cadence of the language, and makes you feel as if he's thinking of it IN the moment. For the scene, it's performative for his actor friends, but it's like he's also Bobby at the same time. So many levels, and he nails all of them. I'm a sucker for this song even done badly; when it's done this well...amazing.
No doubt! This man is the most talented artist right now. He can do anything. Not only he has an amazing voice but his acting range is beyond words. Comedy, drama, noir... anything he wants. He better win a damn Oscar!
I don't know how to explain, but I fell so amazing the moment when he stand his hand up in 1:23. Maybe is the power of acting that we don't know how to explain
I obviously knew Adam was a great actor already, but he really shined in "Marriage Story" he was perfect for this role and so was Scarlet. Heartbreaking. So emotional and raw. Can not stop recommending this movie enough.
This song choice is brilliant for mutliple reasons. Not only do the lyrics resonate with thought process of Charlie's character throughout the whole movie, but this is the second song from the same musical that's featured in this movie. The first being "You Could Drive A Person Crazy" from the musical "Company" (written by GOAT Sondheim but that's a different topic of debate), which is sung by Nicole and her family, insinuating that the strain that her husband is putting on her through this divorce process is literally driving her crazy. The song that he sings is the last song in the musical, "Being Alive" a response to Nicole's that begins as a jab but turns into something a bit more genuine. At first he gets up there and turns into "The Director" that his wife always hated. He's singing falsely, clearly adding accent so he can play off any bad singing as being apart of a shtique, but there's one unique moment, right after he gets back up, he rubs the back of and just stares lost, and you can see a decision in his eyes to just let go and shed this false skin he's wearing. His voice changes, he's suddenly deeper and more harmonic with the piano. It cracks, but instead of trying to curve it into something better he goes along with it, he tries to hit notes that he can't even fathom hitting, and he just doesn't care. He finally embraces who he is, not the character he's been playing to impress lawyers and social workers and even Nicole. It's as if he's saying to her, "this is who I am, and I may not be perfect but I can finally be ok with it." He is truly Charlie in that moment, it's not Adam Driver. The character just comes alive with such raw emotion that the flick of his hand can send a shockwave through you. It's truly mesmerizing and one of if not the most beautiful moment I have ever seen in Cinema.
Such a great analysis. I was completely unaware of this song and Company. I know about Sondheim but am largely unfamiliar with him, not really being a musical theatre person. I often read about his offbeat melodies which go into unexpected directions and the complex lyrical structures and I can see how this works for a song like this. It is very challenging. Having read up a bit more about this song I can really understand the significance. A great performance as well. I didn't know the song Scarlett Johansen sings was from Company, so thank you for that too. 🙂
credit to him including the background character's dialogue because it includes the important context of outward opinions influencing your conflicted feelings, but deciding to go with your feelings instead of doing what everyone else wants or expects from you. Also him being surrounded by his work companions and all of them in stunted shock with no applause, seeing him confront the elephant in the room, all of them already knowing too much about his personal life and divorce. You can feel their uncomfortable fear for his mental health that no one cares enough to ask about.

This was the scene that I keep going back to this movie for. The whole sequence with the songs from company, and the juxtaposition they pose in how they're both sung within their groups of friends/family, really adds a lot to the overall world of the film and their dynamic. And the way that Adam Driver delivers this is just... heartbreaking. I absolutely adore this scene, one of the most memorable scenes in recent years and one of my favorites of all time.

Beautiful scene.... it’s as if he is shocked himself singing this...
I have never seen an actor who acts this realistic. Idk how to explain this but seeing him acting feels like watching him in his daily life, it’s like he becomes the character. He’s amazing
[Lyrics]
Someone to hold you too close,
Someone to hurt you too deep,
Someone to sit in your chair,
To ruin your sleep.
[Adam making all voices]
That's true, but there's more to it than that.
Is that all you think there is to it?
You've got so many reasons for not being with someone, but
Robert, you haven't got one good reason for being alone.
Come on, you're on to something, Bobby. You're on to something.
Someone to need you too much,
Someone to know you too well,
Someone to pull you up short
And put you through hell.
You see what you look for, you know. You're not a kid anymore, Robby. I don't think you'll ever be a kid again, kiddo.
Being alive
Being alive
Being alive!
Blow out the candles, Robert, and make a wish. *Want* something!
Want *something!*
Somebody, hold me too close,
Somebody, hurt me too deep,
Somebody, sit in my chair
And ruin my sleep
And make me aware
Of being alive,
Being alive.
Somebody, need me too much,
Somebody, know me too well,
Somebody, pull me up short
And put me through hell
And give me support
For being alive,
Make me alive
Make me alive.
Make me confused,
Mock me with praise,
Let me be used,
Vary my days.
But alone is alone, not alive.
Somebody, crowd me with love,
Somebody, force me to care,
Somebody, make me come through,
I'll always be there,
As frightened as you,
To help us survive
Being alive,
Being alive,
Being alive!
Obrigado.
Thank you very much.

Yeah. It's Sondheim. Emotional, wrenching monologues set to music. Lay it all bare or don't bother. That's the vibe I got from all the best performances of his music.
If Adam Driver doesn’t win an Oscar for Best Actor for Marriage Story, all hope is lost in the Academy.
Dorsa this is probably one of the most stacked years in the past decade for best actor so it’s a long shot... but i hope so too
It's gonna be between Adam, Joaquin Phoenix, and Robert de Niro. Honestly can't say I'll be surprised with any one of them.
The joker man
Joaquin Phoenix was awesome as well, but I think Adam Driver was better, but the one who deserves to win is Robert Pattinson for The Lighthouse, as much as I loved Adam Driver in Marriage Story

@@alexiscreatingthingsthank Sondheim. He’s the absolute genius behind this and so many more songs
Anyone else here binge watching Adam's stuff?
Ummm like yeah, 5 days now 😵 trying to fiqure out where I can slot my job into this You tube rabbit hole journey 😉

Me. Right now. That was also me yesterday. And the day before that. I wonder when it will end?
I am! I can't stop. I find him to be a breath of fresh air amongst actors and actresses of our day. I would love to meet him and I don't say that about celebrities. I would want him to speak to my students.
Yes, me🙋♀
I love that exhale he gives at the end because it shows how much he gets into the song and what it means to him.
I cried watching this scene. The lyrics is so deep, and the way Adam Driver sings it so soulful 😭
When his voice catches on "But alone" at 2:15, it's one of the most affecting moments of this entire wrenching movie. I also love the way the accompanist cues him for the second verse after he returns to the stage.
It was this scene that hopefully sealed his Oscar
So sad :( He deserved it
while watching the movie at this point I broke up in tears. He's so moving, with his voice and his marvellous ...hands...well yes, they can speak too, they can sing. Adam Driver is the best .
This and the big fight are what really sold him for me. He’s one of the best actors out there right now.
And the scene in the ending when he reads the letter, those three are the biggest heartbreaking moments of the movie. He's such an insane actor. Scarlett Johnson did an amazing job as well but Adam Driver had just that small edge over her.
"Let me be used/Vary my days" gives me shivers. First the most intense of giving, only then the only (and hard) demand
Been there.
beautifully written & performed. Adam can take you by the hand and guide you through the character's most delicate feelings. It's powerful stuff.
No lying. Amazing...
E questa scena resta nella storia del Cinema.
Thank you my ex, my husband and my children for make being alive
i cried in the very beginning because of how charlie was talking about nicole, i cried in the middle because of henry getting closer to his mom, i cried when they had the argument in his new apartment, i cried when he sang this song, and i sobbed when he read the letter nicole made him
edit: i also wanna add that i think its phenomenal that you can tell when his mood changes when he paused to sing the next part, he really is a phenomenal actor.
Adam Driver is outstanding in this movie, but give a round of applause to the guy playing the piano!
Are you kidding with this talent !!!!???!😮😮😍
I cried and cried when I got to this part in the movie and when I read all of your comments I cried again ......I'll never call him any other name then Adam driver he is an awesome actor
My wife is recently coming through a major depression after having our 3rd child and it’s been a very tough season of our marriage, listening to and crying through this song helps me remember to be grateful for the bad along with the good and when dark thoughts of my own come it’s helpful to see the profound sadness on Adam Driver’s face who now longs for the struggle of his marriage…
I really hope everything turns out good for your family! Sending love xx
Hope you're doing good Cody
This role in Marriage Story cemented me as a bona fide Adam Driver fan. I’ve seen him in Patterson, BlacKkklansman, Lucky Logan, the Dead don’t Die, silence, Star Wars and this. So versatile and so incredibly talented. An Oscar is an enviability in his future.
You're a Driverist... a fan of him.
Adam Driver is able to pull off being both casual and profound singing this song. Brilliant and complex acting.
Absolute command of what he's doing. Amazingly nuanced performance.
His voice reminds me a lot of Alan Rickman's. 💔
Giuliana Lanfranchi I was JUST thinking this!
Totally!!!
I kinda see that now all I can picture him as is Snape
He would make a great Snape too!...
So true! A great actor makes us reminisce of another
i am too in love with this man
i’ve listened to this too many times and i still can’t express how much i absolutely LOVE Adam and his singing voice and his acting in general. This scene in the movie made me SOB. I love Adam and I pray that he wins an Oscar for this movie
I've listened to it 37 times and counting
After I saw Joker, I thought that no one would be able to match Joaquin Phoenix's performance. I thought he locked up the Oscar for best actor. After seeing this movie, I'm not sure at all anymore who should be considered the better actor this year in his movie.
I think the same think. Adam Driver is so amazing.
Brick Films The award is not for how much dedication you put in. It’s for what you put on screen
Camilla de Vilhena Bemergui shut up ur mom is gay
He went from casually giving a little performance to gradually being all in. Adam is such an interesting man to watch. This is the magic of cinema.
Adam Driver losing the Oscar this year was straight robbery he had like 4 amazing performances in that academy year alone 🤣
Oscar for him!!!
it is 2am and i am 100% certain i am in love with this man
I love watching Adam in this scene.
I love how this is a medium shot and it ends as a close up without even noticing it. That´s cinematography.
You managed to express what I was feeling - thanks
Agree - I'm a complete sucker for this song too. This is a superb rendition.
Him almost sitting down before singing the part about being open to love, symbolizes how he IS timid about it. Such a beautiful movie
My heart... is experiencing physical pain.
He eyes...
Him doing all the parts and asides himself is so relatable because that is me 100%
I obviously knew Adam was a great actor already, but he really shined in "Marriage Story" he was perfect for this role and so was Scarlet.
So well said.
So wonderfully said, and made me cry harder reading - needed this my friend (,:
Sondheim and Adam! What better to ask for! ✨😭💜
This scene was so startling and beautiful
Seeing this in the theater for the first time broke me

Beautifully done, Adam Driver.
What a scene and bravo Adam Driver - nailed it. Utterly devastating and beautiful.
Adam Driver has such a GORGEOUS voice!!! Bravo!! 👏👏👏👏👏
I absolutely adore this scene, one of the most memorable scenes in recent years and one of my favorites of all time.
if only they put this on spotify/apple music
His voice... it is so moving. It's a shame he can't hear the way everyone else does, because man, it sounds so good. So full of emotion.
sometimes I wish I never watched that movie just to see this scene and feel the same way I felt the first time I was watching it. Being alive fitted in so well with the story and his acting... it is precious. This is a genius scene and I'll never forget it.
Everyone loves the fight scene in this film, but for me this scene was the best and most heartbreaking scene in this movie
I absolutely agree. This is the performance that shld've won him an Oscar. The expression on his face as it changes from light hearted that it's finally all over to the terrible realization of everything he lost. Beautiful. This scene speaks the truth... and it moved me so, that I watched it everyday for a month.
Somehow I always end up watching this video. He is beautiful.
He's not acting. He's being himself. What a man. What a movie.
