As a musician myself the transition in his confidence when he plays is perfect. It's so real and relatable. He starts stiff in his playing and his voice isn't relaxed. As he moves through the song his confidence builds, his singing loosens up and his playing relaxes. You start to hear little fills and then nearing the end his singing is beautiful and he's busting out riffs on the piano. Such a great scene!
Agreed. Best scene in the movie, in my opinion. Also, just asking, the final verse of the song, seemed like he put a note of dread in it that I really like. Or could be my imagination.

If there was an Oscar category for "best scene in a movie," I think this would win hands down. The lighting is impeccable, the camera moves and editing sublime, and everything in the script has set us up for this surprise moment in which Maddie witnesses Percy's innocence, talent, and beauty; she is stripped emotionally naked, more naked than in the beach scene. He "kills her softly" with his song, while unaware of what he's actually doing to her. Her acting in this scene: seeing her machinations and their effects laid bare, and underneath it her true self, her appreciation of him, is almost breathtaking. And we, as the audience (most of us unfamiliar with Andrew Feldman's musical talents) are picking our collective jaws off the floor. Consider that somehow just prior, we were along for the ride when he clung for his life, naked, on the hood of her car as she evaded the police. Now, suddenly, he's in a tuxedo, turning a Hall & Oates pop-song into a vulnerable heart-piercing ballad. This is one of those "under the radar" movies that is, perhaps for this scene alone, unforgettable. Kudos and thank you to all who made it. You gotta admit Jennifer Lawrence is one of the best actresses of her generation. The amount of emotion she can portray while just sitting there is astounding. Andrew Barth Feldman is an amazing musician as well.
I was never a fan of this song. Until now. Wow, this kid plays it and sings it so perfectly, differently. This actually comes from a movie I didn't get through because I didn't think it was very good, because it really wasn't. However, I'll agree with another comment in this thread - the movie might be about 5 stars out of 10, but this scene is closer to 15.
How is no one talking about how great Feldmans acting is in this scene? Even leading up to the musical number his corkyness and humor portray exactly who this charactor should be. "Good, it's time they find out" was mint. Nothing needs to be said about the acting while playing and singing "Maneater" live. (Yes it was actually Feldman playing and singing). Whole scene should be worthy of love and all the awards.
Jennifer Lawrence has some beautifully subtle acting in this scene, you can watch her go from happy-go-lucky to devastated as she realizes the song is about her and what she's done to this kid. And she does it all without a word and with barely moving
His acting nervous while he is playing is so good. How he looks around nervously and then tries to focus on playing. Then her reaction to the song is great. Funny movie all around, but this was probably the best scene and it was serious.
This may seem weird but I'm fascinated by the acting of the guy at the round table on the foreground left. You can see him slowly becoming interested. He is actually about to say something to his date but stops to turn and listen to Percy. I wonder how rehearsed that was and if they did multiple takes to get that guy's reaction right. Maybe he overdid it just a tad, because I probably shouldn't be paying that much attention to him and yet his reaction is very logical. It's just a one of these many small perfect details that make me love this movie.
He did over do his part , which means he did exactly what he was hired to do. To out act her is a mission impossible .. he tom cruise without the height deficiency
Jennifer Lawerence’s acting here is probably the best she’s ever done and she’s really good. I remember how surprised I was with how much I loved silver linings playbook my first time watching and now 12 years later I get the same feeling with no hard feelings. This scene in particular I was so moved it had me in tears. Such a beautiful cover of this song. Thank you for everybody that made this movie. It’s been long time since I have seen a movie that hit me in the feels like this. This could very well turn into a comfort film for me.
I love the scene and agree both did a damn amazing job of making me have all the feels.. but what I love most is the comments here, they’re all so supportive and complimentary..
I'm no good about music, but been watching this for more than 50 times. The piano is so "touching"...his voice is so soothing at my ear. The feel is amazing.. Thank you.
What Jennifer Lawrence did in this scene is why she is the top of food chain in Hollywood. She does not speak and barely moves during entirety of song and yet conveys about half dozen emotions and feelings during it. It is a tour de force by professional thespian
This is good movie making right here. A silly, no-holds-barred style comedy, with this scene casually thrown into it - just to make sure and remind us how ridiculously talented these two actors actually are.
This is the moment I knew this will be a classic for years to come, it's such a beautiful sequence that elevates the film, Jen's performance is so layered, and Andrew's performance is incredible.
I just love Jennifer Lawrence. That’s it. I proudly follow that girl for 12 years now❤ She’s so fun and hysterical yet authentic and believable in this movie and this song sums it up
Never heard this before. RUclips brought this up itself, and I thank the algorithm for it. This is amazing, the acting upfront, the change you see in both characters as the song progresses, and it is sung intensely well... I really want to see this movie/show now. Gotta look it up
I haven't seen the movie and it somehow popped up in my FB feed. I watched it with nil context and was mesmerized by the mood and how well he played the song. I might have to watch the movie now.
I just watched the movie and it was quite different to what I expected. Slap stick comedy at times then some drama and a liberating ending. I quite liked it and liked the characters also. 9/10 for me as it made me feel good afterwards 😊
The irony at this point is magical. Him completely grasping the lyrics from a musical aspect but having not a clue he’s sitting with her right at this very moment. He’s caught in the web he’s so articulately describing.
This cover is just mind-blowing. I don't mean the performance, which contains so many flaws essential to the storytelling of the film, but musically unfortunate. But the lowered tempo and the arrangement for nothing more than a piano and voice reveal some genuinely damn good chords, color tones, and plain masterful songwriting. I cannot understand what could have possessed Hall & Oates to have recorded the awful rendering with which we are all so familiar, when there's a gem like this underneath it. I am so grateful to whomever saw the potential in this music and realized it for us to enjoy. My consistent feeling when listening to this is one of discovery - unearthing something that I was much too young to appreciate, but am fortunate enough to have a second shot at it.
I love the dynamics as he (whoever is actually playing) moves from soft to an almost hard driving beat. I really like this version of the song. I love how he goes from confident to panicked in one second when she threatens him with the announcement.
Genuinly good movie. with heart and this is one of the better scenes. Amd hearing the lyics of this classic in this slowed down version make you realize how genius the song is.
The Acting of this Kid is really impressive. Watching all the little nervous looks he does starting really soft. Then, by the end he is just getting into the grove, it is a really great version of the song and I love listening to it.
THIS is the scene where our boy grows up. At the start he is nervous and tense... Looking around, unsure of himself. As he plays, he just changes. Great scene.
For a movie that otherwise doesn't do a lot of resonating, this scene does. It's how he (convincingly) starts out with some hesitancy, slowly builds confidence as he goes along, his facial expressions in the process, and then Jennifer's just absolutely stunned look that we see several different times, a look that seems to say so much without her having to say a word. And the way this kid sings it says SO much more than the original H&O version ever did, and from my understanding, he's the one who decided to play and sing it the way he did. Yeah, it hit me in much the same way.

Lots of comments about Jennifer Lawrence, but this scene hits because of Barth Feldman. That he can play imperfectly and even sing imperfectly (sometimes not synching the piano with the voice, the thinner more hesitant vocals at the beginning, and even hitting the wrong key with the last chord) had to be practiced many times. Add superb acting to the musical performance. How does he do all of that at the same time? This doesn't take away from JL and her performance, which are excellent too, but his is another level.
All great comments. Only thing I would add is his voice when she says she’s gonna tell everyone what a great lover he is he is confident, “go ahead, about time they knew,” immediately followed by him sounding like a scared little kid with his voice cracking “what do you want me to play!” Great acting in showing his dimension. Such a wonderful and impactful scene!!
Great scene - at 3:07 Jennifer's forehead wrinkles for a mili-second when she realizes that she is the "Maneater". Watch close, it's there and only a true actor could pull that off.
This was a brilliant bit of writing, directing, and acting and a high point of the beauty in these flawed characters. Audience could not help but love them both in this and subsequent scene of jealous behavior.
That's why she is paid so high... A director can't direct movement of eye and eye brow, lips... Those subtle expression was gifted by a great actor or actress... Here Jennifer proved that....
In the middle of a movie not meant to be taken seriously, is this powerful little scene that hits hard. Great cover of "Maneater" as well.
When it starts out his voice makes you think he's an amateur, but suddenly, BAM, it's obvious he's a trained and talented singer.

I expected nothing from this movie. Certainly was not prepared for a soul resonating moment. Incredible performance by both actors!
That guy made the song more famous than before. Thank you for covering this beautiful song.
You obviously didn’t hear it in the 80s
How is no one talking about how great Feldmans acting is in this scene? Even leading up to the musical number his corkyness and humor portray exactly who this charactor should be. "Good, it's time they find out" was mint. Nothing needs to be said about the acting while playing and singing "Maneater" live. (Yes it was actually Feldman playing and singing). Whole scene should be worthy of love and all the awards.
Excellent work by him. He certainly wowed her.
Andrew Barth Feldman is an incredible actor.
Has to be the best rerecording of this song ever, very well done.
I love the scene and agree both did a damn amazing job of making me have all the feels.. but what I love most is the comments here, they’re all so supportive and complimentary..
A young Donald Sutherland
I'm no good about music, but been watching this for more than 50 times. The piano is so "touching"...his voice is so soothing at my ear. The feel is amazing.. Thank you.
What Jennifer Lawrence did in this scene is why she is the top of food chain in Hollywood. She does not speak and barely moves during entirety of song and yet conveys about half dozen emotions and feelings during it. It is a tour de force by professional thespian
True
Agreed nails it
This is good movie making right here. A silly, no-holds-barred style comedy, with this scene casually thrown into it - just to make sure and remind us how ridiculously talented these two actors actually are.
Just watched this in Black and White on a monochrome mode on my phone, honestly straight perfection
Interesting
The camera moving into Jennifer as the music plays in the background, I actually watch it a couple of times, I felt this scene.
He plays this song with passion his voice is amazing and his talent on the piano is second to none brilliant
These two actors put on a world class performance. Amazing scene
he nailed that facial expression at 0:50
This is the moment I knew this will be a classic for years to come, it's such a beautiful sequence that elevates the film, Jen's performance is so layered, and Andrew's performance is incredible.
I just love Jennifer Lawrence. That’s it. I proudly follow that girl for 12 years now❤
She’s so fun and hysterical yet authentic and believable in this movie and this song sums it up
Creep lol
Never heard this before. RUclips brought this up itself, and I thank the algorithm for it.
This is amazing, the acting upfront, the change you see in both characters as the song progresses, and it is sung intensely well... I really want to see this movie/show now. Gotta look it up
He's got a real Ben Folds feel going on here. Brilliant
Right!?!?! I said exactly the same thing.
...most especially with the instrumental part in the outro.
Oh my god this is so good. I find myself playing it over and over. I really relate to the character and the delivery of this song
Very good piano skills, a true Masterpiece, lovely song and voice. Reminds me of Beatrice, the Golden Witch. 😊
The irony at this point is magical. Him completely grasping the lyrics from a musical aspect but having not a clue he’s sitting with her right at this very moment. He’s caught in the web he’s so articulately describing.
This entire scene was made perfectly; the acting, performance and what not, just perfect.
I’ve watched this 30 times in two weeks.
you are not alone 😭
One of the best renditions of the song I’ve heard. Has more drama in it and pathos than hall and Oates who I liked
He learned it to sing it to her. Beautiful version. Love Jennifer Lawrence! 💔
She acted this part phenomenally. She knew the words fit her exactly... the subtle camera action moving into her was brilliant.
As a guy who speaks italian, I was glad to hear the voice dub. Doppiaggio fatto bene devo dire.
while I give the movie as a whole a high 5/10, this scene is undoubtably a 15/10. A real diamond in the rough
A very powerful arrangement of the song.
I actually started crying during this scene, I cant pinpoint it exactly, but something resonated with me deeply.
I was going to write this same thing. I started to well up.
Yes me too I don't know what it was. I was being strong and then I was like oh they're playing the whole song 🥹😭
Wow…. I can feel his energy, his angst….just grabs my heart and squeezes it hard, slowly letting up…
A powerful scene
A great film.
Kudos to Jennifer for taking on this role. Great movie with better acting than most give it credit for.
cried watching this!! literally one of the best movie that came out recently... the acting is top notch the emotions can be felt through the screen. It feels like a classic romance movie
She'll only come out at night
The lean and hungry type
Nothing is new, I've seen her here before
Watching and waiting
She's sitting with you but her eyes are on the door
So many have paid to see, what'd you think, you'd get it for free
The woman is wild, a she-cat tamed by the purr of a Jaguar
Money's the matter, if you're in it for love you ain't gonna get too far
Oh, here she comes
Watch out boy she'll chew you up
Oh, here she comes
She's a man eater
Oh, here she comes
Watch out boy she'll chew you up
Oh, here she comes
She's a man eater
I wouldn't if I were you, I know what she can do
She's deadly man, and she could really rip your world apart
Mind over matter
The beauty is there but a beast is in the heart
Oh, here she comes
Watch out boy she'll chew you up
Oh, here she comes
She's a man eater
Oh, here she comes
Watch out boy she'll chew you up
Oh, here she comes
She's a man eater
Oh, here she comes
Watch out boy she'll chew you up
Oh, here she comes
She's a man eater
Oh, here she comes
Oh she'll chew you up
Oh, here she comes
Here she comes
She's a man eater
Oh, here she comes
She'll only come out at night
Oh, here she comes
Here she comes she's a man eater
Oh, here she comes
The woman is wild oh
Oh, here she comes
Here she comes watch out boy watch out boy
Oh, here she comes
Oh watch out watch out watch out watch out
Oh here she comes
She's a man eater
Thanks
This is honestly unbelievable. Serious goosebumps. Wasn’t expecting that
The fact the actor sings it and it's not someone else makes it so much better.
What an amazing scene. The acting, the song, the cover, the drama. Awesome through and through.
This is the scene that made me fall in love with this movie.
and there goes me, searched the song and downloaded it right away coz of this scene. Classic. Probably simply the best
Great scene - at 3:07 Jennifer's forehead wrinkles for a mili-second when she realizes that she is the "Maneater". Watch close, it's there and only a true actor could pull that off.
Indeed the best scene in this movie 👏👏👏👏
This was a brilliant bit of writing, directing, and acting and a high point of the beauty in these flawed characters. Audience could not help but love them both in this and subsequent scene of jealous behavior.
That's why she is paid so high... A director can't direct movement of eye and eye brow, lips... Those subtle expression was gifted by a great actor or actress... Here Jennifer proved that....
When you are this beautiful you are gifted and full of your self . With such beauty confidence will Follow naturally .
“Good it’s time they found out” was a great line.
I just love this gal, includes everyone in the view of life! I'll bet she's a great human being in private as well!
Even though she remains almost completely still, she conveys so much emotion, and it really propels this scene forward...
I can’t stop watching it either. Some actors can just make you believe. JL is like that.
