With no context, this looks like a finale and ultimatum of a long running series that spans for over 500-1000 episodes. But Gurren Lagann delivered this scene in only 8 episodes something that most shounen anime cannot do without long build-up of characters. When you think about his feats, Kamina was actually pretty weak. I think the maxim of believing in someone who believes in you when you can't yourself is already a great message the show taught, but Kamina's final living words being about believing in yourself no matter what, for the sake of yourself alone, regardless of how much you believe in others, always struck a chord with me.
It sounds like nonsense, but when you think about it, it becomes not only sensible, but amazingly inspiring. "Believe in the Simon who believes in you." It completely blows the typical 'believe in yourself' idea out of the water because if it was that easy to just believe in yourself, nobody would ever have confidence issues. If you're scared or uncertain, then saying to believe in yourself is a platitude at best and utterly worthless advice at worst. How can you believe in yourself if you can't convince yourself that you're worth believing in? And what good is it to have some timid coward saying that they believe in you? But Kamina's last lesson to Simon forces him to go beyond that. He's not saying to Simon to believe in himself as he is now; he's implanting the idea of a version of Simon that DOES believe in himself. What would that Simon be like? What morals would he have? What would he say and think? What would he *do?* What would he BE? By separating Simon's current self from this potential one, he gives Simon something to strive for that, by definition, *can't* be impossible. That's why, when Simon gets past grieving Kamina and fights Guame, he ends his speech with, "I'm not my Bro: I'm ME!" Because that's the point when he finally comes to understand: All that he can be is himself, so he should be the strongest Simon he can be. He can't be Kamina. But he can be the Simon who learned from Kamina. He can be the Simon that grows to be a taller man than Kamina. He can be the Simon that believes in himself - because that Simon was there all along.
Living words? No. When Gurren and Lagann combined, Lagann's monitor indicated that the pilot was dead. Kamina died the instant he was struck down. But his fighting spirit reanimated his body for one final stand.

Telling Simon to believe in himself, rather than believing in anything else, for some reason, the way he said it and coming from Kamina, it's so powerful dude
I think Kamina never had a large level of spiral energy, but he knew that Simon had the potential to become extremely powerful. So by using Simon as a battery he showed him the possibilities of spiral energy and how to evolve it even further.
This sequence always gives me goosebumps to the point where I start getting teary eyed.... Kaminas voice actor really made it perfect, you physically can't do it better than this!
I'm a teacher, and whenever my students are unconfident and insecure, I always tell them "Don't believe in yourself. Believe in me who believe in you." And it helps. Thank you Kamina, for teaching me one of the greatest lessons of my life.
I gotta say, I just loved the epicness of this clip when I was young. coming back to actually watch the series 15 years later and catching this line really hit hard.
I've had the time to think about this episode and I came to this conclusion: Kamina has the power to stop the doubt of humans, to make them strong; but Simon has the power to bring the best out of someone. Both completed each other, but only 1 person's trait could be brought out. Now that Kamina died, Simon had to inherit that trait and make sure he brought the best out of everyone and kept them strong. And at the start of this battle I thought Kamina's behavior was a bit suspicious, but I think Kamina knew what was going to happen that day. His plan of attack, his conversations with everyone and his resolve for that battle; all gave me the idea that he knew, that Kamina himself knew he was going to die there, and he knew Simon would inherit his strength and succeed him.
the creators in an interview confirmed that Kamina had straight up died in the first attack, he frikkin came back to kick ass and save his friends before his body gave out totally.

Their perfect for the flow of the show
Ok I'm sorry to say this but this I think definitely referenced in Kirby: Planet Robobot AND I LOVE IT! BOTH SCENES ARE BLOODY EPIC AS HELL!
Telling Simon to believe in himself, rather than believing in anything else, for some reason, the way he said it and coming from Kamina, it's so powerful dude
best anime ever.
Kamina was so determined even death was impressed enough to allow him to finish the fight
Not a single scene in visual media ever since has matched this level of hype.
I do believe that this anime is just centered about how great drills are
3 years....3 years it's being since this series got aired, and still makes my blood go hot as hell.
9 years now, still the best anime i have ever watched
@@Store_64 yup 9 freakin years

Anyone here 17 years later?
Just who the hell you think I am
I think this is the best scene in any anime.
_Later, Buddy…_
2:08 I was today years old when I realized gurren lagann has drill fangs when it uses giga drill breaker
It's been so long, and this scene still gives me Chills man.....so good
I think Kamina never had a large level of spiral energy, but he knew that Simon had the potential to become extremely powerful. So by using Simon as a battery he showed him the possibilities of spiral energy and how to evolve it even further.
one of the best moments of anime history!!!! :)
This sequence always gives me goosebumps to the point where I start getting teary eyed....
Kaminas voice actor really made it perfect, you physically can't do it better than this!
しゃべり方が全力でほんと好き
サンシャイン池崎の原点 それに関してはとても熱い..
Let me tell you that some manly tears were shed here. What a goddamn sendoff.
1:39 at first this saying didn't make sense but now i understand exactly what it means.
When ever I wanna feel sum , I come watch this or ace die to make sure I’m still dialed in
We’re close to a million views boys. 10k left.
Edit: 8k now
I'm a teacher, and whenever my students are unconfident and insecure, I always tell them "Don't believe in yourself. Believe in me who believe in you." And it helps.
Thank you Kamina, for teaching me one of the greatest lessons of my life.
This anime is fucking good and a MUST WATCH
In terms of budget... we have unlimited budget
Ah yes about the budget, there is no budget.
this is the first anime that had fall in love with anime. now I came back after years later
Best anime moment EVER! i cried manly tear while i see that Kamina will live forever in our hearts!!!!
Its watched this and got glassy eyes 16 years after 😵
cant wait for the movie version of this ^.^ still love this moment such a great charecter kamina was XD
I gotta say, I just loved the epicness of this clip when I was young. coming back to actually watch the series 15 years later and catching this line really hit hard.
I still get goose bumps when I see this! The best finisher I've seen in anime.
Beating a boss with the bestie before they log off, never to be seen again
So much nostalgia
I've had the time to think about this episode and I came to this conclusion:
Kamina has the power to stop the doubt of humans, to make them strong; but Simon has the power to bring the best out of someone.
Thank you
