In New Zealand our gar fish is called a " piper " and nowhere near as big as those . Similar taste to our flounder (flat fish) .... the scales come off so easy then remove the head and grab a rolling pin (beer bottle or whatever) and start from the tail and roll towards the head , all the bones and guts get pushed out ,clean the gut cavity and cook with skin on to your preferred method .... beautiful delicate white flesh ..... I've always preferred rolling them in salt and white pepper seasoned flour ,fry and a little drizzle of lemon juice just before eating...... Great now I'm hungus for some fish!!! :)
In NZ we call Garfish Piper though they are generally smaller. They are taste fantastic and favourites since we caught them off the wharf as kids. Bonito-belly bait and tiny hooks. Best way to cook is scale, gut, wash then put their spike through the base of the tail so they make a circle. Dust in flour then fast fry whole, turning once. When you straighten them out the meat falls off the bone. Delicious!
That looks like a mad feed mate! We have the tastiest Garfish in the world in Australia. The southern Garfish, when butterflied and lightly crumbed and fried or baked, makes the best fish burger or wrap with heaps of salad, tomatoes, a bit of cheese, fresh red or even caramelised onions, spicy chilli mayonnaise and a touch of sweet chilli sauce. Absolutely sublime tucker! 😋🤤🤤🤤🤤😀
Instead of doing the pinwheel on the skewer oh, maybe you should have gone ahead and done a zigzag. That way all you had to do is enter one end of the tail and then switch back every time you entered it on the skewer. You would get a similar effect on the cooking, but it would make it easier to do. That looks so good!
We have a very similar fish by the same name in Australia. Difference being they only have a protrusion from the lower jaw and therefore a tiny upwards facing mouth. We wouldn't dream of using a size 1 hook on Australian garfish, rather the smallest hooks we can buy. Those gar you caught would be considered the biggest of the big here and we class them as an awesome eating fish.
Nice cook. I was the guy with the Instagram photo 😄 The marinade is a good idea. I made this with chicken before but never thought of doind it with fish. Have to try this when the garfisch arrive here at the Baltic sea. Usually they come at the end of April. But it was a cold winter. Even the large swarms of herring are still not here.
I often take these home for the table (especially when deeply hooked). I always get mocked by other anglers for eating them but if only they knew how good they were!
Can't believe you're catching gars already, must be the benefit of having the Gulf Stream close by ? I've eaten them before, will give that a go,if I catch any !! And finally, where's your cycle helmet !!
Get yourself a bottle of keylime wine and marinate that prepared needlefish in it for 30 min. Then brush with light sesame oil and grill then make into fish tacos. You can thank me later. Also goes really good with a watermelon salsa.
I just stumbled across your channel. I think the Garfish we have here in Australia look similar but are a different species. We roll out the backbone, dust them in flour and fry them till crispy and they are sweet and delicious. That said, your recipe looks brilliant. Thanks for the video.
They look like great sport, I haven't fished for them in years I may have to give it a go again. I didn't even know about the Smash Random channel, you should look at getting it added as a featured channel to this one so more people can find it. Great stuff btw and more Smash bits to watch
Jay as you say, great sport on light tackle + you end up with some Conger bait, and good to eat. Guernsey pin-wheel Garfish, looked amazing. Great on BBQ as Kebabs with some fruit, Apple, Strawberries or Grapes. 👍👍👍
Cool to see how the long nose swim underwater. That sent trail went a long ways. Try not to eat all of your conger bait😂. Catch you on the next one 👍🇨🇦
Hey mate, excellent video catching and cooking long northern garfish. I wish we had your long northern garfish in australia. Send some our way oneday. Great cracking fun.
What a fantastic idea to prepare long nose for the bbq! Definitely trying that this summer! Showed the wife and got the nod of approval too! We are on the Dorset coast and I have caught quite a few of these float fishing from the kayak. Not sure how early they turn up here though? Anyone know?! Keep up the great content smash! Woo!
Nice video, Love the underwater footage and it looked like a great cook up. I reckon you could live on your coastal foraging and fishing without spending money buying food. (you would miss the steak though). Thanks for posting.
If you mix some dishsoap with a bit of ginger and salt I find it takes out any smell. Your hands may smell like ginger for a couple hours if you use too much but it's better than smelling like fish oil for most of the week.
The easiest way to fish , cheap chum bread and fish oil and a good bit of fun catching Garfish not ever been interested in eating Garfish but interested in how the cook up goes
Where he lives seafood stocks seem so abundant its amazing. I live in Vancouver the heart of the largest salmon River in the world and fishing here sucks unless you have a nice boat.
Here in Florida we like to distinguish between the freshwater garfish and the saltwater garfish in the video. We just call them needlefish. I never thought to call them garfish too, but that is what they are. The freshwater gar seems to be able to get much larger than the saltwater variant which is the reverse for almost all other fish species.
well that session went well always good to catch what your after and yet again free food and some top notch bait was that you and pauls catch or was that just your bag .. stay safe dude take care look forward to the next one
@liz williams CHOPPING boards in catering in the British Isles are colour coded: blue for raw fish, red for raw meat, brown for raw underground veg, green for salad veg, yellow for cooked meat, & white for dairy products.
Hahaha hey I was fishing these mini Marlin on the north Cornwall coast a few years back, they were a pain as we were trying to catch some MACKEREL lol 😆 but yeah great tasting fish!
You should open your own seafood restaurant Jay. Obviously not now, lol. I like the simplicity of ingredients you use to make something tasty. Great video as always x
i fish for these on the fly rod in sweden , they taste really good if you smoke them . if you catch them at the right time you can get 70+ a day easy only fishing in the morning and late afternoon
Hi boss, I’m doing food tech as a GCSE and I have to do brunch, as I’m a fisherman I wanna use the fish/ scallops I catch but struggling to find good brunch recipes, any ideas?
Wow, in Bulgaria and Greece we would only dream of such big Garfish (Needlefish)! That being said, it seems you wasted a lot of the fish meat just for those tiny fillets(I hope you did not throw all the rest of the fish). They only have onc central bone and and the rest is pure meat with no bones. What we do here - either fry them whole with some flower and marinate, or put them on the grill and then just take out the central bone.
Well a good dat for catching, don’t they look sleek when moving in the water, and the cooking to eating bet it tasted lovely you always know how good it tasted with the noses you make lol, enjoyed the video till the next one tight lines
That does look very good, I like Garfish fried but I steamed it once, that didn't work as it came out too dry. Fried good and I'll try bbq in the summer.
I read they could be caught with just a piece of red twine. Because they have tiny teeth, it gets stuck there. They are used as bait for trolling for dentex. May be true only in adriatic :)
We catch a lot of these in the Philippines, definitely not a trash fish here! Normally gut them and throw them on the grill. Their bones give off a slight blue hue when cooked.
Check you out my brother you getting real fancy now with the fish . Making shish kabob fish you turned into a real Gordon Ramsay hahaha. That looks delicious I'll eat that with you any day of the week. You know very well that's not enough fish I know you eat a lot more than that my brother especially with something looking so good and delicious. God bless you and your family and God bless all of you who are struggling and homeless because of covid-19
That would look good on a bed of rice you know that right and some veggies on the side or mashed potatoes and veggies cuz that stuff looks real good brother
Great cooking methods. I have an 'Camping teryaki , gas canister grill, so i barbecue indoors, and make my own teriyaki marinades. Your discovering another world to cooking fish. And you have the worlds best fish on your doorstep. Keep going, 10 years from now, you will be in a league of your own. The Japanese chefs are amazing. 'HiroYuki Terada' is my favorite allrounder. Be a dream to bring him to Guernsey for a catch n cook?? Hiroyuki makes Ramsey look inept. Coming to think of it, ? So do I. Smash Fishin Baby! xXXBjuudifullXXx

In Oz we call those things Long Toms. Gar Fish are a mini version of them with a smaller beak.
you could put these buggers length wise on a hotdog bun, would probably make a killer fish sandwich! Great video!
Definitely! That would be awsome
GARFISH baguette 🥖?
I used to love catching these in the Mid East. As soon as you get a hook in them they take off standing on their tail.

This fish is not trash, just grilled it in charcoal with little salt that the best.
Watch Japan fisherman how to cook this fish.
Smash....nothing better than creating a taste and then seeing it come together you got a gift for this mate....
Looks tasty!cant wait for garfish season to come to sweden (should start soon)
Jay as you say, great sport on light tackle + you end up with some Conger bait, and good to eat.
