Hello, here we love horse mackerel, small ones fried, the bigger ones are great grilled on fire, the whole one with guts and everything, to not get very dry, when they are full of small shrimp they taste great, in Nazaré (land of Giant waves) fisherman dry the horse mackerel on sun for some days in the beach on nets and then eat it boiled.
In Portugal the small ones fried are called "jaquinzinhos" and its a very tradicional dish with tomatoe rice its delicious even tourists loves it.
    Happy fishing for all 😃

A favourite fish in Asia, cooked in so many ways depending on which cuisine - grilled, fried, sashimi/sushi and you can stuff pureed peppers /cilantro in the stomach cavity or in between cuts on body for extra ‘punch’ of flavours!
Simple way to cook without wasting so much meat, and let it flavour in it’s own oils (it’s one of the oiliest fish) is to remove the gills & guts, score two/three cuts across the body (top fin to belly), leave head & skin on, pat dry, season with salt & pepper - fry it up.
You can eat it with or without the skin (crispy skin tastes great), dip fish meat in soy or chilli sauce. The meat above the head is tender, and if the head has been fried crispy enuf, it’s good to just crunch on the bony bits 😊
I am aghast tt it’s used as bait (especially those larger than 20cm) - it costs £12 to £13 per kilo here at the supermarket!! 😭😊

Cracking vid boys. 100 fish from the lighthouse is bloody good going! 🎣 🔥 Nice to see some squid caught too. We had cuttlefish off the boat this week too. The Portuguese like horse mackerel, not as popular with the locals. Nice work 👍

Put green onion thinly sliced with sashimi HM and lemon. Rice on the side is the only way land locked Indiana gets this fish. Typically we only see them in early spring and a early to late fall. I think we get them in season with Japans timing. The other option is sashimi HM ( smacked in lemon juice and or vintages ) then put them in a bowl and add very thin red onion or shallots into a few dollops of sour cream. If you have a Japanese Mayo you can add like a table spoon max to the sour cream. For all add salt, pepper, chili oil and garlic as you like. The onions and acid are not optional. The sour cream one will last a week or more in the fridge due to the acid applied direct to the flesh. Enjoy !

Great Video! Here in Spain it's quite common to eat horse mackerel (called Jurel in Spanish). They're often at the fish counter in the grocery store and on menus in fish restaurants. Like you said, it's a lot like bream. Great for ceviche too!
