That was really cool. That sure looked like the Smelt I catch out of Lake Michigan, but it's hard to tell.Love to watch you and Sam catch loads of fish. It's really nice of you give us a still for a snapshot.
Hello, here we love horse mackerel, small ones fried, the bigger ones are great grilled on fire, the whole one with guts and everything, to not get very dry, when they are full of small shrimp they taste great, in Nazaré (land of Giant waves) fisherman dry the horse mackerel on sun for some days in the beach on nets and then eat it boiled. In Portugal the small ones fried are called "jaquinzinhos" and its a very tradicional dish with tomatoe rice its delicious even tourists loves it. Happy fishing for all 😃
A favourite fish in Asia, cooked in so many ways depending on which cuisine - grilled, fried, sashimi/sushi and you can stuff pureed peppers /cilantro in the stomach cavity or in between cuts on body for extra ‘punch’ of flavours! Simple way to cook without wasting so much meat, and let it flavour in it’s own oils (it’s one of the oiliest fish) is to remove the gills & guts, score two/three cuts across the body (top fin to belly), leave head & skin on, pat dry, season with salt & pepper - fry it up. You can eat it with or without the skin (crispy skin tastes great), dip fish meat in soy or chilli sauce. The meat above the head is tender, and if the head has been fried crispy enuf, it’s good to just crunch on the bony bits 😊 I am aghast tt it’s used as bait (especially those larger than 20cm) - it costs £12 to £13 per kilo here at the supermarket!! 😭😊
Cracking vid boys. 100 fish from the lighthouse is bloody good going! 🎣 🔥 Nice to see some squid caught too. We had cuttlefish off the boat this week too. The Portuguese like horse mackerel, not as popular with the locals. Nice work 👍
Thanks for watching mate using the old technique for scad with the mullet gear and chum , never fails lol nice to see some squid tho 🎣 looking forward to see the video with cuttles mate there great eating and bait !
Put green onion thinly sliced with sashimi HM and lemon. Rice on the side is the only way land locked Indiana gets this fish. Typically we only see them in early spring and a early to late fall. I think we get them in season with Japans timing. The other option is sashimi HM ( smacked in lemon juice and or vintages ) then put them in a bowl and add very thin red onion or shallots into a few dollops of sour cream. If you have a Japanese Mayo you can add like a table spoon max to the sour cream. For all add salt, pepper, chili oil and garlic as you like. The onions and acid are not optional. The sour cream one will last a week or more in the fridge due to the acid applied direct to the flesh. Enjoy !
Great Video! Here in Spain it's quite common to eat horse mackerel (called Jurel in Spanish). They're often at the fish counter in the grocery store and on menus in fish restaurants. Like you said, it's a lot like bream. Great for ceviche too!
Horse mackerel are delicious in Portugal we call it (carapau) ....love your videos .. We grill the whole horse mackerel without the tips, just with salt, they are wonderful.
hell yeah what a cracking little session decent bait for free and a new flavour sensation ☺and i thought my chum was flash with a few tins of cat food in it i have never had lobster in my chum you are a flash smash . take care dude tight lines and have fun 👍
Grew up catching these is Hawaii-called them Akule there. Delicious fish and fun catching them with lighted bobbers. Always big numbers. Love this channel and y’all’s personalities!
There is nothing better than making memories with your best friend especially when fishing 🎣🎣 😉🎣 and catching fish 🐟🐟🐟 and to find out your bait fish that your catching tastes better than the prize fish you catch haha . I bet from now on you will be bringing that fish home for supper 😜🙂 and cook some for your father and see what he says
my dad loves horse mackerel, his favorite way is freshly caught fried in butter(sometimes he will use drippings) and garlic. not overly healthy but delicious.
Always a good content , great job what a pleasure. Horse mackerel are really good to make some sushy, yummy , to be honnest it's perfect, just freeze the chair some minutes and put one the rice, with soja sauce. Bon appétit et merci à vous les gars .
🤣🤣 Horse Mackerel is as popular as sardines back home (Portugal) but please please that fish preped whole salt and straight on the bbq... Do it, you'll love it
I have eaten them in Bulgaria and when I told them that in England they are only used as bait in the pots they thought we were crazy. Great video guys!
Smash I’m really enjoying these premieres. What a great way for you to engage your audience and get live feed back. Jess says with the new bundle of joy coming you need to name the boat “Smash Daddy”😂😂😂😂👍🇨🇦
In Japan horse mackerel are called Aji. In restaurants they are in tanks and they pull them out live and fillet for sashimi (raw, thinly sliced). We then fry the bones so they are very crispy. Great with a cold beer. We grill them too.
Great session mate very entertaining. Sam and yourself make the perfect team. The horse mackerel look very meaty. Think they would go well deep fried in batter then dip in sweet chilli dip.
I use horse mackerel for deadbait on pikefishing in the autumn / winter period. never thought about eating it. if they are like normal mackerel, they should be good smoked or grilled on the bbq as well then?
Horse mackarel are really good eaten breaded fried and sushi. Just have to de-bone them with tweezers. Very popular in Japan Delicious as well. Japanese call them Aji
Another smashing video guys well done, I googled the batter you used as it looks good:- "Canada's first choice in fish seasoning, Fish Crisp is a lightly seasoned coating designed to form a bond with the fish to resist oil absorption and create a firm fried texture" It's not cheap either about £13 a bag
hey smash love the vids try to marinate in garlic, pepper and salt then dust them in corn meal and deep fried them whole, (without the guts) serve with cooked potatoes in salted water and make a simple salsa verde with parsley (minced) onion (minced) olive oil salt pepper and a drizzle of lemon juice the real man will eat the crispy head of one of those fishes ;) hope you enjoy and man up for the task ;)
I love eat scad he have a bit more bones but it is delicious he have mix taste sardin and mackerel he is mixed between jack and mackerel in India it lots 👌😊😊
