  • Squid are fascinating creatures and can be found all over the world from shallow inshore waters to the deepest depths of the oceans. They are not only a great source of delicious sustainable protein but they are high in vitamins and nutrients including B-12. I show you how to catch and how to humanely dispatch squid. Ensuring absolutely no distress and ensuring your catch is in the best possible condition.

Nice to see a good squid session. I always remember my son's first boat trip with me and a caught a good-sized squid. The creature soaked me like a fire hose, and my son freaked. Then it proceeded to ink which freaked him out a second time. Good memories, and good advice not to bring them straight into the boat. All the best to you all.

it's always great to see the respect you show to the animals you catch in dispatching them quickly and humanely. Great video once again and loved the underwater camera! Its amazing the difference between 2 sets of organisms, humans and cephalopods, that are studied together so closely because of their mental advancements.

It is a risky thing showing the dispatch on camera as there are so many trigger hungry people out there. But I felt it was important to educate people how to humanely and efficiently do the task. It is the ultimate respect for your food.

@@TheFishLocker true John. Thing is squid are probably the easiest and quickest catch to dispatch. I remember my dad showing me how too do it years ago as a kid, thinking I’d get upset but I didn’t. I’ve since shown my boys how to do it they’re 11 & 14 and neither were taken back or upset by it. The only reply I got was “is that it” I was like yes lads that it. The others two we caught they both despatched them themselves, no problem whatsoever. My dad taught me, and now I’m teaching my kids and they love it, especially the night fishing🙂👍

XLNT video, John! Locals here in Hawaii, usually eat squid/octopus one of two ways...Raw or dried. For dried cephalopods, separate the tentacles & marinate overnight. Myself, am no fisherman, only consumer so don't have any marinade recipes to share!-lol. But they're usually dried in screen dry box, approx. 7-10 days, depending on weather. Or smoked over local mesquite or acacia wood....Keep them videos coming....ALOHA from Hawaii!

My dad has a huge allotment it’s not his land he rents it off worcestershire council and come the end of summer into Autumn he starts the process of pickling some of his peppers, onions, and fruits so he can make jams etc plumbs anything he can pickle really. Great video as per mate. I moved outside to western Australia a few years back and got right into squid fishing, great to see it's becoming more popular in the UK... We just use single jigs out here, usually the 2-2.5 size on 8ft light spinning gear it's alot of fun. Except when the sharks and Samson fish nick em. Tight lines mate, hoping to see more squid content.

Damn those were big squid! Here on the opposite side of the Atlantic, when we jig for squid from piers, what we catch isn't much larger than your lure. They're good eating, but when you separate the body from the tentacles you're done - both are bite-sized. The problem with public pier fishing is that as soon as you pull up a squid, people will come over and drop on either side as close as they can get. I mean four at a time.
I recomment fried squid. Salt, pepper and a little hot pepper flakes. High heat, quick cooking time. Add a soy dipping sauce with sesame oil, vinegar, crushed ginger root and garlic.

I just dip my squid in a bit of flower, then fry in Cornish or Irish butter, few chopped cloves of garlic, splash of lemon juice and your done. Some folk like a splash of Worcestershire sauce on them which I’m not bothered either way, growing up a mile from the Worcestershire sauce factory in Worcester I can’t even smell the stuff now my nose is so accustomed to it😂

I did the same afew yrs back, up until two weeks ago I live baited two cuttlefish off my sib (daytime) and now feel confident how to do it.
I'll be back down soon trying other tactics with more gear ordered offline to put to use, the mackerel numbers have been thin so and it's enjoyable trying something completely different and reaping the rewards.
My two cents so far, do the opposite of mackerel jigging, slow and delicate when you feel the weight on the end all the way in.

Great one John. You weren't squirting your pal on purpose, were you?? Of course not, why would I say that! There seems to be loads of squid everywhere at the moment. I've caught them in Cornwall, Hampshire and Sussex during the last month alone. I don't know if they are feeding on the prawns which are moving off into deeper water at night. They definitely use those lights to hunt by though. Full moons are epic.

A really good night's catch, squid are one of my favourite eating "fish". When I did all my sea fishing, way back, off the south and east coast we never caught any. Don't know if they just favour your warmer waters off Cornwall or whether they've only moved here recently.
