Master of Wine; BEST VALUES at COSTCO

  • In this video, Bob Paulinski Master of Wine talks about and tastes the best wine values at Costco. If you’ve visited a Costco, you know it’s a busy place and they sell a lot of wine. The mix will include wines that can be found broadly most times of the year, others with more limited availability, along with a range of wines under Costco’s own Kirkland label. The mix will vary based on location, but your bound to find some pleasant surprises. The price points range is spread from under $10 to $100+, with the majority in the $15 to $30 range. My intent was to search out the best values from classic regions that also have good level of availability. I went with six wines that most caught my attention. They happened to be from six different countries, with price points ranging from $8 to $50 per bottle.
    Before I get into the specific wines, here’s a bit on making sense of the price signage at Costco. This applies to wine and anything else in the club. Some tags will show additional supplier funded discounts. Be sure to note the promo expiration date. Signs with an asterick in the upper right corner are items not currently being replenished, although it may return at a later date. Signs will show a cost that ends in 7, this notes a reduced price.
    Wines tasted in the video:
    2021 Dr Loosen Blue Slate Riesling Kabinett from Mosel Germany Costco $15 -suggested retail price $20-$22
    2021 Chateau de Grezels Cahors from the SW of France Costco $7 - suggested retail price $16 to $20
    2019 Condado de Haza Crianza Ribera del Duero Spain Costco $15 - suggested retail price $22 -$24
    2018 Kirkland Brunello di Montalcino Italy $20,
    2021 Austin Hope CS Paso Robles $50 Average retail $56 - $58
    Kirkland 10 Year Tawny $17

    Nice wine reviews. I have had the Kirkland Brunello. Here in San Antonio in the last 6-8 months I've noticed a significant reduction in good wine offerings at Costco. Especially in Italians and major Bordeaux estates. Removed one of the long wood racks and doubled the amount of pallet stacked wine. Never seen any Dr Loosen but for several years they had Karl Erbes Ürziger Würzgarten kabinett riesling for $11. Fantastic value and I bought a few cases each year.

But I am concerned it might be too jammy.😂. Cahors at that price is crazy I like them because at a lower price point, they provide more earthiness and savory-ness than Argentine Malbecs. What a nice and broad array of stuff you've got in US Costco! That's a dream. There are two Costcos in the Madrid metropolitan area, and both have been sending most of their international wines for clearance. You may have tasted more international wines than there are there at the moment. Anyway, something I CAN get my hands on is Condado de Haza. I'm not entirely sure I've tasted that wine but I've definitely seen it. I'll see if I can get my hands on Crianza 2019 and test if we see eye to eye on this! 😝

      The local pronunciation of "Paso Robles" is mostly PASS-owe, full stop, and has been since at least the beginning of the 20th century. It wouldn't surprise anyone from the Central Coast area, whether Latino or Anglo, that Bob almost never heard "Robles" during his winery visits. (For the record, Bob, the whole string sounds like pass-uh-ROW-blaze - or in the mouth of an Anglo with a little more Spanish and little concern about being thought pretentious, pa-so-ROH-bless.)
      California schools make note that Castilian is the majority dialect of Spanish spoken in far-off Spain. The Spanish taught in West Coast US schools is, pragmatically, español mexicano - that is, Mexican Spanish.

    I was able to get my hands on the brunello recently but I was a bit disappointed... maybe my expectation was too high? It had the classic nose/pallet just as you described, but I thought that the finish was too short and lacked the intensity from a relatively young (still) sangeovese. I also tried a kirkland chianti gran selezione for the first time (which sold for $23 I think?) and thought that it was much better value. Hi Bob, I really enjoyed the video. Unfortunately our Costco here in Austin TX doesn’t seem to have these wines. We love the Kirkland Prosecco and find it to be an absolute steal at $8! Do you have any suggestions as to how to spot hidden gems at a Costco outside of CA?

    • @bobpaulinskimasterofwine7234
      @bobpaulinskimasterofwine7234  4 месяца назад +2

      Hi Christine, I’m surprised that you can’t find any. At the very least, the two Kirkland labels see national distribution, although some are limited in terms of volumes. As for suggestions on finding hidden gems, look for the supplier funded promos, these are usually great values. Also, look for wine signs with an asterisk in the upper right corner. These are often lower volume, artisanal wines that will not be around long. I’m glad you liked the video. Cheers!

      One time I visited a Costco in LA ( Cerritos). I was shocked that it was all CA wine. I had hoped to see a good spread of all parts of the world, as CA is a serious wine consuming state. These videos in Costcos un CA also confirm that.
      Clearly, Californians love their CA wine. Reds are "bold," "tasty," "jammy." In Spain, Italy, and France, wines are still made for food.

Now Vega Scililia is a different story. I’m unhappy to say that the Ribero wines seem to have gone the same way as most Australian wines in that they have priced all the top wines in the €100 range and unfortunately the entry and middle range is bereft of any quality.

    Newbie here to wine education, so a few questions:
    1 Is the white wine a Kabinett or a Riesling? I've heard of Riesling but not Kabinett? What is the correct term to use?
    2. Was the white wine cold when you reviewed it?
    3. Is a port a meal wine or a dessert wine or both? I never knew what fortified referred to.
    Thank you

    • @bobpaulinskimasterofwine7234
      @bobpaulinskimasterofwine7234  3 месяца назад

      Thanks for taking time to ask.
      1) Riesling is the grape variety. Kabinett is a term that indicates when the fruit was harvested. There are other terms for later harvested fruit as well.
      2) Yes, it was chilled in a fridge for about one hour. Too cold reduces the amount of aroma and taste.
      3) Port is typically served after a meal. Fortified means neutral grain spirit is added before the yeast converts all of the grape sugar to alcohol. The spike from the neutral grain spirit stops the fermentation while there is still some residual sugar in the wine. The resulting wine has sweetness and the elevated alcohol makes the wine stable.

    I just picked up the Kirkland Russian River 2022 Pinot Noir. Screw cap. I was wondering if you have ever found TCA in a bottle with a screw cap? I am getting a very faint wiff of it for the first time in this wine, maybe I'm picking up on something else. It's only $11.99, but I wish it were just slightly better as it seems a bit sour on the finish. At $12 it's still miles ahead of most in this price range so I'm probably just being greedy, I struggle to find a Pinot under $18-20 that I get pleasure out of.

    • @bobpaulinskimasterofwine7234
      @bobpaulinskimasterofwine7234  3 месяца назад

      It’s possible, but rare. TCA can be introduced prior to bottling. My guess is your wine is reductive. Did it develop favorably with aeration? A slight sour note can be from volatile acidity. That would be unlikely, but possible.

      Sometimes it is wineries selling off excess. Others are making custom wines. Others might be using young vines, not quite up to standard for an estate wine. Every situation is different. With the Kirkland labels, the quality varies, but generally it’s solid. The prices are often low due the volumes and fewer links at the distribution chain.
