Bob Paulinski, Master of Wine

Добавлен 2 апр 2021
The place for all things wine. Learn about wine in an unpretentious way. Think wine education, tastings (some blind), interviews and cool random facts, shopping for wine values, etc. Often, I'll be somewhere in a vineyard, winery or cellar. The first video on this channel was posted in late 2022.
I've spent 40+ years in the wine trade. I'm one of just over 400 Masters of Wine in the world. For years, I had owned a specialty wine store, then spent two decades in corporate leadership roles in the US and Australia. I travel often for work, enjoyment, to learn and to experience the wine world. I've judged at wine competitions on five continents, along with remaining active in the MW educational program. I’m currently a partner in a wine import company.

It can be found at some west coast Costco's, along with Total Wine. It can be found in a number of other specialty retailers, including good availability in many markets around the world.

Tasting Costco’s Prosecco and Champagne

I made my way to Costco to pick up the sparkling wine offerings under their own Kirkland Signature label. I have three wines to taste, two Proseccos and a Champagne. This video will include a wine tasting of each. Prosecco is produced in NE Italy, Veneto and, Friuli-Venezia Guilia region. The primary grape variety is Glera, which must be at least 85% of the blend. The second fermentation which ...

Master of Wine: CABERNET SAUVIGNON
Hi Bob, my question is twofold 1) what with the wines in the wine supermarkets like total wine & costco ? 2) personally I store my wine in a spare room, completely dark but with no temp control. I am not buying wine for the long term considering my age of 75, a winefridge is useless because of power outages here in Africa. How long can one keep a wine without problems in temperatures around 25 C ?
Hi Cop Eddy, sorry, but I don’t understand your first question. Total and Costco are major players in wine. The temp is usually around 20C in large retail stores. As for the temp question, 25C is on the warm side, not ideal for long storage, but up to a few months should be ok. It’s good your storage place is dark.
What about Shramsberg?
That was outstanding for many years. I don’t see often anymore and I really need to restate it. Have you tasted it recently?
Love both Proseccos. I prefer a touch of residual sugar. Not sweet but not bone dry either. I believe most people do not want very dry sparkling wine.
Both are very well made. I’m glad you enjoyed them. 🥂
Many people get Muscat confused with the dry French Muscadet
Yes, a common mix up.
I'll see if I can find Rutherglen Muscat at my local place. I'd really like to find good sweet wine! I've found that I like every style of wine provided I haven't tasted it in a while 😂 Cheers!
It’s definitely a unique style. I had an opened bottle around for three weeks. It keeps well and a little bit goes a long way. Rutherglen Muscat is not a video topic that will get many views, but for the adventurous, it’s worthwhile. Cheers!
There’s 3 grades of the All Saints Muscat; classic, grand and rare - they’re all very good but as you’d expect, tastier with increasing price…from ~$20-120. I have them in my dessert wine cupboard - glass stoppers in the Oz version - grand and rare can be hard to get but cellar door is good….long flight from the states though🙃 Yummo
Hi Shaun, thanks for commenting. I included the least expensive option since it’s the most readily available. I’ve tasted the others back when I lived in Australia. Amazing wines. Cheers!
Question for you sir, being from NorCal have you ever had the chance to visit Corti Brothers in Sacramento? Darrell used to select wines for the White House and for a small corner market, their wine selections are incredible. Wine makers in Italy and California make wines only for them. Great selections under $25 too, but also real special stuff. You can always tell their wine gurus by the long blue coats.
Hi Hayden, I’ve not been there. Sounds like I need to do a bit of homework. I’m always looking for value stories for RUclips. I’ll look into Corti Bros. Thanks!
@@bobpaulinskimasterofwine Walk in and look at the first wall of wine....all kinds of great values. Start with the Tinto from Mendoza which adds a bit of white to the table friendly red blend. Find something cool in their deli selection and take home a pound or two of Mikes Burger Blend for your best burgers. Take I80 to Sac and stay on US50 at split. 59th Street and take a left to greatness.
@@HaydenDawson-s5m Thanks, I’ll look into it, but it’ll be weeks before I can get there, stacked with travel.
I live in Victoria and I am fond of both Muscat and Topaque (The other famous fortified from Rutherglen). I was somewhat surprised that you reviewed the youngest blend available from All Saints; the average age of 7+ years means to me that this is a good wine but not a great one. Rutherglen stickies are classified by their average age (they are all NV), and I generally buy the Rare classification, which has an average age of 30+ years. Obviously this makes them significantly more expensive (around USD 80.00) and All Saints also offer a 100+ year blend at around USD 800 a bottle; out of my price range. The older blends have greater intensity and almost never ending length, I can still taste the wine a minute after swallowing. Other top producers are Chambers Rosewood and Morris
Thank you for commenting. The reason I included the youngest blend is due to availability. It’s the one that sees the broadest distribution. It can be a tough call when making a video, telling the story about the top wines with limited reach or choosing a wine that more viewers can actually find. I considered using Campbell’s, but All Saints was more readily available. I miss living in Melbourne, wonderful quality of life. Cheers. 🍷
@@bobpaulinskimasterofwine I live in outer Melbourne which gives me ready access to wineries in the Port Phillip district. As I love Pinot and Chardonnay I couldn't live in a better place in Australia (is my bias showing?)My three favourite Victorian producers are Mount Mary, Bindi and Giaconda; I've been on their mailing lists for many years.
@@neilfish2635 Your faves are among my faves. Today, I was looking at a bottle of Moorooduc Pinot Noir.
@@bobpaulinskimasterofwine Mornington Peninsula has some lovely winery cellar doors. Moorooduc Estate Pinot is a wine I've drunk quite often as it is well priced and generally of good to very good quality. Their single vineyard wines are not such good value in my opinion.
@@neilfish2635 I have a bottle of the estate wine. Mornington was a weekend visit during my two years living in the CBD.
Thank you for a great educational video, Bob! Sauternes and blue cheese is a divine combination for me. I've never heard of Rutherglen Muscat before, and I will try it if I see it in stores. Cheers!
Hi Igor, thanks for the good word on the video. It won’t get a lot of views as dessert is largely out of fashion, but I hope inspires some people to give it a try. Yes, Sauternes and blue cheese is sensational! I hope you can find the Muscat. Cheers!
@@bobpaulinskimasterofwine Is Port at a point where it is considered something separate from all other dessert wines? You certainly see enough of that everywhere that I couldn't call it out of fashion.
@@HaydenDawson-s5mIt’s a specific type of dessert wine, along with a number of others that are fortified.
Thanks for this reminder. It's time to open another Sauternes. I usually buy a 375 every year as an extra Christmas present to my wife. I hope some people will learn from you that good dessert wines are not cheap "plonk". They are wonderful after a nice dinner. This cold weather is also a good time for a glass of port.
Hi Larry, Sauternes, got to love it. 375ml is the perfect size. Cheers!
@bobpaulinskimasterofwine And just a good or better (to me) are Mosel GKA, BA and Eiswein. We brought back a few Eiswein from Finger Lakes NY as well.
@@larrydalton2205 Riesling at its best is amazing!
@bobpaulinskimasterofwine I should have said Ice Wine from NY Finger Lakes rather than the German name Eiswein. The production method is often different.
Not a huge dessert wine fan, but disappointed you didn’t throw a Niagara Late Harvest or Icewine into the conversation. My personal favourite would still be a 5-puttonyos Tokaj, so unique. Cheers!
I’m a big fan of Niagara, but I chose a couple of wines that have good international availability. Cheers!
On a side note, wanted to ask a question, I'm collecting 2017 wines since it is the year I got married, and open a bottle each year, the other day I bought a Bolivian high alttitude, cool climate gran reserva 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon, the wine spent 24 months in oak (producer didnt specified new, old or french), the ABV is 12%, the winery released it by the end of 2023, the Price was around 40 USD, expensive for our standards. How long do you think I can keep it in the cellar?
That’s a very difficult question to answer. High altitude implies it’s a leaner style with tannins. Not knowing the treatment is a problem. New oak on a leaner, lighter style is often a problem as the wine ages. The oak starts to dominate the wine over time. 12% alcohol indicates the wine is not overly ripe, likely with good acidity. At five is already eight years old, I would open it over the next few years. Can the winery provide more input?
@@bobpaulinskimasterofwine I tried asking the sales person, but only said it is their flagship wine and it should last a long time, but dont think the person had a good knowledge about the wine. I have also a 2019 pinot noir and a 2021 pedro ximenez from same winery, before I had wines from them and liked them all, a pinot rose that is my favourite rose wine and also an unoaked pedro ximenez that absolutely loved, so wanted to try their flagship wines.
@@mauricioalvarez204 I still think you’re better off popping it over the next few years versus long term cellaring.
@@bobpaulinskimasterofwine thank you, will follow your advice
Yep. Let me get a glass😍😍😍. Love me a good stickie! I don’t think I’ve had a sweet wine I’ve not liked and there are some I love and a few I almost crave. Like you, I prefer most of them warmer especially with very savory bites and cheeses. Cheers!
Carl, I hope we can share a glass at some point. Cheers!
@ that would be awesome! 😎
Only once I drunk sauternes and love it, but impossible to find here in Bolivia, the only sweet thing (dont know if I can call it wine) that I have in my cellar, is a locally artisinal ratafia, which is an alexandria muscat must fortified with singani, that is a high alttitude (distilled at 2000 meters) spirit made 100% of alexandria muscat, the ratafia is extremelly aromatic and floral. Also I saw a local sweet pedro ximenez made from cool climate grapes that had botritys, think next time I'll buy a bottle to taste it.
Ratafia can be very interesting. I’ve tasted a few. PX can be amazing, but often teeth tingling sweet. Too bad about the Sauternes.
One of my favorite sweet wines is Picolit form Collio, it's insane how low the yields are, and you can feel all that concentration when drinking it. But I imagine it would be very hard to find in the US.
I was in Collio just before the covid shutdown. I brought a bottle of Picolit back with me. You’re right, not easy to find.
Thanks, Bob. So pleased you featured sweet wines; not many do. Love Sauternes. I am still drinking halves of Doisy Vedrines, 2013, I bought en primeur. I also have a mixed cased of 2015 halves put away for the future. I also enjoy Tokay. Haven't drunk Rutherglen for years - must get reacquainted.
Hi Steven, halves of Sauternes are the perfect size. Rutherglen Muscat is incredible. I popped a bottle of All Saints, had a bit here and there over nearly two months. It holds up beautifully. Thanks for commenting!
Now you’re😊 talking. I’ll put on my list to look out for. Thank you!
Sometime in 2025. If I hear when, I’ll send you a note.
