i always enjoy your presentations on wines from Trader Joe's and Costco. both stores offer some very good bargains. thanks for this particular video. i am definitely going to get it this week. keep up the great work, Bob.
Totally awesome. I’m no Master of Wine, but I was very impressed with this wine. This is my first watch of your channel, thanks Google. Liked and subscribed. Thank you.
Chianti Classico is a favorite at my house. I will definitely pick up a few bottles on my next trip to Costco. Your videos are so informative. Thank you so much!!
Good timing, Bob. My wife and I are going to Costco today. I'll make sure to get a couple of bottles. Still waiting for their Gigondas to show up at my Costco. Maybe today I'll get lucky.
@@bobpaulinskimasterofwine hi. It’s the Scrimaglio NV. It’s brut, quite a nice fiz, a bit more fruit (pear, white melon, red apple) than autolitic, touch of brioche, some nice saltiness, nice mousse, crisp acid, nice length and clean finish. Pretty refreshing. For 20 bucks, I’d get more for sure.
Nice experimental shots today. The one from the bottom of the glass actually helped to see the colour. Not sure I've seen it anywhere else, so kudos on that! I'll see if I find the 2021 vintage here; they tend to be a few years delayed as happened with the Gigondas. Cheers!
@@bobpaulinskimasterofwine I did find it! I'm tasting it as I write these lines. Great concentration on both nose and palate, bit of a wild structure with high acidity and munchy tannins; I found the alcohol a bit too noticeable when I opened it, but now that it's chilled it's more integrated. I agree on the aromas except I can't find heirloom tomato, but that might be because I'm not used to heriloom tomato either. 7.99€ at my local Costco!
Thank you for commenting. As for food pairing, most anything with a tomato based sauce, also grilled red meats. The tannin cuts through the fat. Also with grilled meaty mushrooms, outstanding!
I wish you would have posted yesterday morning before I went to Costco 😂. Great vid. I will try to get next time. Did you see any 2020 bottles? I would love to taste back to back to see if I can notice the difference.
Just got back home after a short trip to Italy. Wine wasn't the focus but I did get to try my first Franciacorta, which I enjoyed a lot (didn't note the producer, though). I also had a red Tuscan wine, but not a Chianti.
I visited the vineyard in Tuscany that produces these and other chianti’s, can tell from the rooster. We tried several of their wines and they explained how they supply to countless labels, anytime I see this I know there is a good chance it will be good
The UK supermarket Tesco carries a really good value Chianti Classico Riserva for £10 (about $12.70) although it's often on offer for a a £1 or so less. They have had it on their shelves since the 2009 vintage and the current vintage is 2019. It's full of bright red cherries soaked in assam tea, spicy, leathery tannins with red fruit and herby aromas. Not a 95 point wine by any stretch of the imagination, but good, honest well made weekday red to drink with nice food and relax with!
@bobpaulinskimasterofwine7234 It is under their Tesco Finest brand. As supermarkets go, Tesco's range isn't too bad, with some hidden gems among a sea of mass market brands - have recently enjoyed a very good Godello from Monterrei and a superb St Nicolas de Bourgueil.
The good thing about the top end lines in Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Marks and Waitrose, is that they often clearly identify the producer, which is very helpful when finding value.
@bobpaulinskimasterofwine7234 they're not under the Tesco brand but are exclusive to Tesco. Well done to their wine buyers for stocking something different to Malbec, Merlot, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Grigio or Chardonnay 👍
I’ll be finishing off a 2019 chianti classico normale from Castell’in Villa tonight that sells for just over $30 in nyc no less. So much incredible value in Sangiovese wines.
Nice, you’re drinking well! Tuscan wines have been sensational in recent years. My only call out is that in unusually warm vintages, the alcohol levels can bump too high.
@@bobpaulinskimasterofwine agreed. The more I taste, the more I think 2013s are some of the best drinking Tuscan wines right now. I’m hoping the 2016s will reach even higher heights, but we’ll have to wait and see.
@@bobpaulinskimasterofwine I don’t know much about vineyard practices in Tuscany, but do you think in hotter years less dense plantings or actually increasing yield per hectare could limit the alcohol problem? Or is your sense that that could also mean you get less concentration and complexity from the fruit?
@@ianlutz9600Excessive heat may cause a number of problems from raised alcohol levels, low acidity, baked/stewed fruit character and overly stressed vines. In hot vintages, high pH levels will impact wine color.
The styles have some similar elements. Both show significant influence from barrel aging, both are medium deep in color and mid-weight in body. The CC Riserva has higher acidity, which makes the wine a bit more lifted on the palate.
Hi Ann, just saw your note. Every store is different, but look at the short ends on the lay down bins. Typically, that’s the place for the upper end wines. My Costco had a 2020 Chateau d’Issan and a Pio Cesare Barolo, both a bit under $60.
That’s exactly where I found the high end wines. Got a $60 Louis Martini Zinfandel “MonteRosso”. I think. It tasted nice and was a good addition to our anniversary evening.
Thanks for the value alert - I’ll definitely try to find it at my local Costco. CCR are one of my go to value reds. One nitpick: your pronunciation of Chianti dries me crazy- it’s Kee-ahn-tee, not Kee-ahn-tay.
Full natural or agglomerate cork, it doesn’t matter. Purist may disagree, but the science doesn’t support it. Most important is the storage conditions, cool, dark, resting on its side and you’re good to go.
Wooop, today we got a bit of editing with the camera being inside the glass cupboard 😁😂 Probably because I'm not a big Chianti fun, I still keep thinking that Chianti is an overrated wine, despite all the cult of International followers proclaiming its virtues 😬
It’s good there are plenty of other options. For me, the value is very good and wine shows a strong sense of place, very typical of the region. Thanks for commenting. 🍷
