Master of Wine: Best Wine Values at COSTCO

- In this video, Bob Paulinski, Master of Wine discusses the new wine releases from Costco under the Kirkland Signature label. He tastes through and provides buying advice on six wines, plus one additional wine that is not under the Kirkland Signature label.
The wines are all under $20 per bottle, some under $10. As is typical with Costco, both prices and availability may vary by market. The wines in this video were purchased in Northern California.
2023 Kirkland Signature Sauvignon Blanc, Marlborough, New Zealand $7.49
Pale color, green tinge, fresh, bright, zesty, lively acidity, medium intensity, crisp and clean. I've had many better Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc, but the value is here is very good. Crowd pleaser. Good availability.
2022 Kirkland Signature Malbec, Mendoza, Argentina $6.99
One of the my favorite Kirkland wines for value from last year. The new release is also a great value. Medium deep color, purple hue, good ripe fruit character, well made, nicely balanced. A wine to buy by the case. Good availability.
2021 Kirkland Signature Bordeaux Superieur, France $6.99
This is a so-so vintage for red Bordeaux. Medium depth of color, muted, light aroma, well made, but a simple, one dimensional wine. There are better options for a value red wine in this video. Seasonal, limited availability.
2019 Kirkland Signature Rioja Reserva, Spain $7.99
30 months in oak, six months in bottle prior to release. Medium deep red, showing some slight oxidation, pretty aromatics, smokey oak, good weight, solid complexity. Mature and ready to drink now. This is a solid bargain, especially for those that prefer subtle, nuanced wines. Limited availability.
2020 Kirkland Signature St Julien, Bordeaux, France $17.99
76% Merlot, 24% Cabernet Sauvignon, not a typically for the Left Bank of Bordeaux. Good depth of color, round, decent weight, black fruit, cedar, very refined, soft styled red. A good wine from start to finish, there are better Bordeaux on the market from less prestigious appellations for the same money. Limited availability.
2021 Kirkland Signature Gigondas, Rhone, France $13.99
Grab it while you can! A textbook southern Rhone red, made from mostly Grenache with some Syrah and Mourvedre. Medium deep red, wonderful aroma, red and black fruit, savory, superbly balanced, a complete wine from start to finish. Limited availability.
2021 Headline Zinfandel Dry Creek Valley, Sonoma, CA $12.99 on promotion through April 28, 2024.
Classic Dry Creek Zin, medium deep color, red raspberry amount with spicy, savory note, full, robust, big styled red.

I love when you do these Costco videos.
Much appreciated. I hope it proves to be helpful when you’re wine shopping. 🍷
love the costco and trader joe's tastings. i've had quite a few and am in agreement with you on most.
you're doing a great service to wine lovers all over. thanks for your insights, opinions and well presented
videos like this one.
Paul, thank you for the good word, it’s much appreciated. Cheers! 🍷
Suggestion: You show a wine label at the start of the review. I have no idea if you like or hate it. At the end if you love it I then have to stop and rewind to find the image of the label so I can take a pic to remind myself next time in the store. Suggestion. Can you include that same label image at the end of the review. Tx...love the rest of the info.
Thanks for the suggestion. Always trying to make it easier for the viewers. Much appreciated. 🍷

Hi Bob, really enjoy your content. Discovered you just a couple of months ago. The every-day quizzes are really nice! I’m from Amsterdam, so no Costco in my neighborhood😂. There’s still something to learn from these type of tastings, thanks!
I appreciate your comment. And thanks for playing along on the daily quiz. I visited Amsterdam over the Christmas holiday. Had a wonderful time, nice people and plenty of options good wine. The wine bars were excellent. Cheers!
Love the Gironde from Costco. I’ve had a few bottles and fortunately have a few more. You are spot on about giving it some aeration. I give mine about an hour in the bottle or 30 minutes in the decanter. Miss the cork toss, lol
Jim, thanks for the comment. The cork toss will be back! 😂
Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching and commenting. 🍷
Bob ! One of your best episodes. Great explanation, detail and tasting notes. !!!
Geoff, your comment made my day! Thank you. 🍷
Thanks!!!
Thanks for the good word. 🍷
Hey Bob awesome review you still got it buddy. Take care Alan❤
Hahaha! Hi Alan, much appreciated! 🍷
Hey Bob I have tried almost all of those wines. I enjoy them a lot and I am happy to see others enjoying them as well.
Thanks for the good word, much appreciated.
Another video with super quality!! Thx again. Could you do a review on your wine tools sometime?(glasses, wine screws, decanter, etc..)
Thanks for the good word. I like your idea for a video. I’ll add it to the list for future videos. 🍷
Hi Bob, really enjoy your channel expecally this one on Costco Brand. Kirkland Melbec is my regular table wine, never try the Sauvignon Blanc, usually Kim Crawford is baseline Sauvignon Blanc. Thanks again for the wonderful content!!
Hi Kee, I appreciate the kind words. Tue SB is worth trying. Thanks for commenting. 🍷
Nice job. I love that you're not a wine snob. Thanks so much for doing this for us.
I appreciate the comment. No snobbery, ever! 🍷
Hi Bob, thanks for the great content. Love the uncomplicated approach of sharing your knowledge with us. It's what's separates half-educated experts from true professionals. True value here, keep up the good work!
@greller01, I appreciate your comment. I try to bring useful info without too much of the wine geek speak.
Great video Bob! Looks like I'm going to Costco - Hopefully they have Gigondas and the Zin here in the motor city.
Hi James, thanks for the good word. I hope you can find it. Cheers!
Great video….👏👏👏
Thank you! 👍
Thank you for doing the video! I went out and purchased four of your recommendations - the 2021 Gigondas, the 2021 Headline Zinfandel (and also the Cabernet Sauvignon), the Rioja Reserva and the Argentinian Malbec. The only one I was disappointed with was the Gigondas. It lacked the body and balance of similar Rhone blends from 2021. The surprise for me was the wonderful Headline Cabernet Sauvignon. Headline is a new winery for me. It was fairly fruit forward but with nice tannins for its young age. I will put this one down for another year or so. Thank you for the recommendations!
I’m glad to read most hit the mark. As for the Gigondas, i obviously liked it more, but these things happen from time to time. Thanks for the good word! 🍷
My first time watching your channel. Very nicely done. I am a huge fan of Zinfandel wine and am often unhappy to see how few are offered at restaurants in and out of my area (CA). It's such a shame, but, maybe more available for me to buy then. Thank you for the references. I will try three of these very soon. ☮️ & 🍷 to all. ching!
I’m glad you found my channel! We’re aligned with Zin! I hope you come back for more videos. Cheers. 🍷
Bob! You're back! So glad to see this video. Thought we'd lost ya. ;-)

@@jpdonovan3753 I really appreciate the kind words. Many more videos to come.
Love this channel. A Robert Parker at our disposal, haha.
Thanks for the good word. I’m often called Robert, it gives me the same initials as Parker! 😂
I’ve never been disappointed with Kirkland wines. A great value is their Champagne. I’ll have to look for the wines you profiled. Great video, thanks.
Thanks for the good word. Much appreciated.
Just finished a three evening enjoyment of a Kirkland 2019 Rioja. Amazing value that I would recommend to my wine friends. Buying and cellaring wines for nearly 5 decades, finding an inexpensive quality wines to share and recommend to others is where I find enjoyment. But I did also pick up a few bottles of 2020 Lynch-Bages at Costco just to keep some classics on hand.
"Oceans of bad Zinfandels" Amen wine brother! A Ridge zinfandel will be an epiphany to zin detractors.
It’s always nice to have a solid, cheap wine around to pop anytime. As for Lynch Bages, the 2020 is sensational, but built for the long haul. 🍷
@@bobpaulinskimasterofwine7234 I'm getting long in the years, but I'm still in for the long haul. If you find yourself up in Willamette Valley let me know and we'll dust off something old and sit on the back deck and enjoy.

I tasted 2021 Kirkland Signature Bordeaux Superieur the next day I opened it, and it was really really good.
That’s good news! 🍷
You always put out great content, but your Kirkland wine reviews are my favorites (TJ & Aldi wine reviews are up there too). I already have the Bordeaux and the Malbec on my wine rack. I now have a couple others to pick up. Seeing your review, maybe I'll save the Bordeaux for the in-laws, LOL. Thank you for this very well done, super helpful video.
And based on your other comments, I'm looking forward to the cork toss returning. 😄
Thank you for the kind words: Last night, I tried the Rioja Res again, it’s very good. I’m glad to read your in-laws are covered. 😂
Definitely! 😂
Bob, would you mind reviewing and suggesting sparkling wines, including roses’ from Costco, please. You may have done it before but as a new subscriber, I can’t find any videos on this subject. Thank you so much for helping us on a budget navigate the world of wine.
Hi Kathleen, thank you for subscribing. I’ve included some Costco sparkling wines in previous videos, but I’ve not focused solely on sparkling. It’s a good idea, it’s added to the list, likely latter part of May or early June.
Just discovered your show. Great theme! Just what I needed. Let me ask you how does an Argentine wine find its way into French Oak? thx.
I’m glad you found my channel. The use of French oak reaches much of the wine world. French oak is sourced from the center of the country. Highly regulated. The grain tends to be super tight. It leads to a very subtle oak character. It’s largely become the industry standard.
I would love to put my hands on the Zinfandel. Applause 👏 to you for stating that you love Zinfandel, in a world that seems to snob it. It's my absolute favourite grape! 😍
Zin fans unite! 😂
I always appreciate these Costco videos, Bob. Personally, I've enjoyed the Bordeaux Superieur with a long decant..especially for the price. I have also enjoyed their sauv blanc but tend to find it overly citric/one dimensional in that sense. Anyway, thank you!
Thanks for the good word. If you enjoyed the Bordeaux, look for the Rioja. It’s a very good in more restrained style. Marlborough SB and citrus tend to go hand in hand.
Good stuff. Unfortunately we don’t have wine in our COSTCO here in NY. Thanks.
Sorry to hear that!
Costco in Connecticut has wine if you can get across the border.
Cork Toss! It made me sub. It is a must!
It’ll be back in the next video! 😂🤣
You are the best costco wine reviwer ever!
That was unexpected! Thank you. I'll mix in more Costco reviews.
I just subscribed to your channel. Good videos.

@@bobpaulinskimasterofwine7234 Tomorrow, I will get some wine that you recommend! Although there is a price gap between Korea and the US, your choice is still valid here!! Thx!!
Thanks for the report. Unfortunately at my closest Costco there is no Gigondas, Headline Dry Creek Zinfandel and even the Kirkland Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc is all gone and i wanted to buy some more bottles of it as it is a great value wine.
Larry, my guess is the new vintage of SB hasn’t yet arrived to your Costco. The Gigondas and Zin are more limited.
@bobpaulinskimasterofwine7234 For sure more limited on Gigondas and Zin. The SB had a huge pallet when I bought several bottles a month ago. Or maybe they moved it up front like they do occasionally.
Have you tried the 2019 Ch Dauzac and 2019 Clos Marsalette that I've seen there? I haven't opened a bottle yet.
@@larrydalton2205 I’ve had the 2019 Dauzac, but not bought at Costco. What’s the price? If it’s around $40, it’s a bargain.
@@bobpaulinskimasterofwine7234 Costco price is $30 for the Dauzac.
@@larrydalton2205 That’s a good price. $10 to $15 below the norm.
Been buying the Gigondas for a while and often suggested it to folks in the aisles. Best wine value in Costco
Fantastic wine value. 🍷
gone last week in hawaii@@bobpaulinskimasterofwine7234
I really like drinking Primitivo di Manduria even though the wine experts detest the grape variety and claim it is boring.
I like it as well. The boring versions are mostly from cooperatives. Estate producers can be excellent.
Love the hair.
Hahaha! Thanks for that! I was long overdue for a trim!
Would the odd growing pattern of Zinfandel be tricky to pick as well to get the perfect grapes for the wine?
First, the odd growing pattern is not a given. It depends on the vintage, age of the vines and vineyard management. Second, the odd growing pattern is not necessarily a negative. Many Zin will have a ripe, sometimes jammy character from the ripe and over ripe fruit. Some underripe fruit will lend acidity to counter the riper fruit. It’s all about balance.
Really nice line-up. Wine at Costco's must really be a prominent thing in English-speaking countries. I'm waiting for the latest vintages of Gigondas and Bordeaux Superieur so I can taste them and compare with your notes later on, but they're really far back (even the Bdx Sup which sells quite well). I'm in good terms with the distributor who works at my local Costco in southern Madrid area, and it turns out they've cleared off a large portion of their international stuff. Nowadays what you can find is mostly a decent selection of otherwise easy-to-find wines in just about any place in Spain :(
Costco is the largest wine retailer in the US and a major player in several other countries around the world. Too bad about the Madrid Costco.
@@bobpaulinskimasterofwine7234 I think they kept a few more in the other Costco up in the (wealthier) northern Madrid. They've removed great mid-priced wines and now they only sell the Crus Classés Left and Right Bank. Not quite ready to give away that much cash!
@@juanmanuelmunozhernandez7032 Sounds like it’s what the market is buying.
Bob I can never find Bordeaux, Gigondas, or Borolo at either of my local Costco. Is it the time of year that I go? I’ve checked at both Kalamazoo and Grand Rapids.
Hi Brian, the Bordeaux and Gigondas have just recently hit the stores on the west coast. Both should have national distribution. Didn’t see the Barolo.
I had the 2022 Kirkland CDP tonight. In the glass it looks like a Pinot, light, but very ripe in the mouth. 70% Grenache, and 10% each of Syrah, Mourvèdre, and Cinsault. Touch hot on the finish(15%), but definitely worth the $19.99. Say 6 bottles, not a case. 😉
Hi Brian. I’ve not yet tried the 22 CdP. Too many are now bumping up in alcohol, plenty of hot vintages. I’ll look for it next time at Costco. Thanks. 🍷
In all honesty I bought 2 bottles and that is probably where I will leave it. I still have about 6 bottles of the 2018 Gigondas. I think it is a more structured wine.
@@briand2614 ‘18 for Gigondas is a very solid vintage.
The malbec is my go too and is consistent. Got the 2021 chianti and I find it a little too light
Malbec👍 Didn’t see the Chianti.
When do these seasonal offerings show up on the racks? My souther CA costco stores don’t have any. I have been paying attention for months.
That's odd, there are widely available in NorCal, also hearing from other states where the wines are in stock.
You could list the wines on the time line, that way we know what is coming up!!
I'll look into it. Thanks,
Looking through a flyer for a local wine seller, I see lot's of reviewer scores for various wines. It got me to wondering, how would you score these wines? You being a professional, I'd completely understand why it might be something you aren't interested in doing. Thanks.
I've been hesitant to attach scores to wines in my videos. A score represents a snapshot in time, as the wine aging, it'll change, plus many variables comes into play. A score also provides little value without a broader context. There's also a hefty dose of subjectivity. For me, the Gigondas and Zin were the top two wines in the video. For value for the money, the Malbec and Rioja Reserva are excellent.
@@bobpaulinskimasterofwine7234 For more insightful reasons than I was thinking, but that makes sense to me. Thanks for taking the time to respond. You do a great job articulating your interest in these. Thanks.
Thanks for the response, I completely understand. You do very clearly provide your opinion including values (without a score). I appreciate that and certainly know what to try. Thanks again. @@bobpaulinskimasterofwine7234
Does anyone find the Gigondas at Florida costco locations, or is more of a west coast find?
Not sure about FL, but it generally sees broad distribution, although it is a seasonal item.
Vivino only rated the great Kirkland Gigondas only 3.4, which is why I don’t trust Vivino. Another great wine at Costco is the Chilean Sideral red blend. Cab, Petit Verdot, Cab Franc and Carmenere. Fantastic wine for $16.99!!
I don’t give Vivino much attention. I didn’t see the Chilean red blend. I’ll keep an eye open for it. 🍷
Do they have Sideral? It's a great wine
@@marciobukowski9836 Didn’t see it.
@@marciobukowski9836 My Costco has Sideral. I bought 4 bottles.
Question???? How will these wines improve after carafing??
Here’s my experience with each after about an hour of aeration. I didn’t carafe any, but the bottles were left open minus a few ounce pour that was used in the video.
‘22 Malbec, no change
‘21 Bordeaux Superieur, slightly more aroma, but negligible
‘19 Rioja Res, it drinks well, from the moments it’s opened, holds together well with aeration
‘20 St Julien, improved aroma, more expressive and pronounced
‘21 Gigondas, very good right out of the gate, gains more range and intensity with aeration.
‘21 Zin, develops well with aeration, gains intensity, the wine was a bit softer as well.
I hope this helps. 🍷
Thanks…. I am a big proponent of carafing especially screw tops and young wines. I’m in San Diego and the Costco in Carlsbad usually has all the “good stuff” because corporate HQ is close. We use the CA Chardonnay as our house wine 🍷

That Malbec punches way above it weight and offers terrific value. I'll dare to disagree about the Gigondas. I found it dull and lifeless.
Thanks for commenting. I’m glad we agree on the Malbec. As for the Gigondas, we’re at opposite extremes. I had a second bottle, enjoyed it as much as the first. We disagree on this one. Cheers.
I agree wholeheartedly with your assessment of the Kirkland Bordeaux, but we will have to agree to differ on the Rioja (BTW, the "j" is pronounced like the "ch" in the Scottish loch, please don't perpetuate that mispronunciation). I am no MW, but I have been a serious student of wines of the Iberian peninsula for decades. Palates vary, sometimes quite a lot, but I was bitterly disappointed in this Kirkland Rioja Reserva. Weak nose, little taste, decent tannin and dry, but no finish. Just watery and uninteresting IMO. And, I bought a case.....
Yes, palates do vary. I respect all opinions. I popped a second bottle of the Rioja a couple of days after making the video. I’m staying with my opinion, it’s a solid wine for the money. Have you tried more than one bottle? Is it possible your first bottle was corked? As for the pronunciation, I’ll try to do better 😂 Thank you for commenting. Cheers 🍷

@@bobpaulinskimasterofwine7234 🤣 reckless aging in general.
@@denisdonohue1863Got it. I’ve had my fair share of that! 😂

@@bobpaulinskimasterofwine7234 well, yeah, but if someone has a very mild Cali sav blanc in mind for a walleye fish dinner, this will be overwhelming to the point of making your dinner guests unable to taste the fish.
@@jdmasur732 Walleye? Are you from the Midwest? Walleye is fantastic and yes, a fresh, bright white wine is right with it, nothing too overt.
@@bobpaulinskimasterofwine7234 hey, now that we're going down this path, not many wine reviews or tastings here do food pairings. I've been to wineries in Napa, Sonoma, Palo Alto, the Biltmore and along Lake Erie. None included food. In Tuscany, we went to 6 wineries and had two pairing meals catered in our villa. All had food. It was very cool to have that experience.
@@jdmasur732I sometimes mention food pairings in my videos. RUclips provides a high level of detail on video performance. When food pairings were included, the videos had a retention drop off. Perhaps I need to rethink how food is worked into the videos. Thanks for raising the point.
I am sorry Bob, Malrlborow SB (2023) is perhaps the worst wine I have ever had! It’s worst than drinking vinegar straight! I hope that the rest of your choices are better than this one.
