    Kirkland seems to do a great job in curating their wine program. Would be great to get to know the people behind it, preferrably interviewed by someone like you. QPR is on another level here...

      Thanks for the good word. They generally do a very good job. I don't know if anyone there would be open to an interview, but that would be fun. I know a couple of the people there, I'll pose the question. For years, I was the guy that curated wines like this. There's a lot of detail work.

      I don't find any price competitiveness in non Kirkland wines at Costco. I simply go to Total Wine or my local wine store and I get a better deal. Costco does have good value on his spirits though.

    Bob, thanks for this video. I've enjoyed several of the Kirkland wines and find the Prosecco is just fine for a spritz! My favorite though has been the Chablis Premier Cru. The price has varied from year to year (as has the winemaker), but the last time I bought it, the price was $17.99. (The 2020 seems to have a bit more fruit to go with the minerality compared to past years, but it's still enjoyable). Thanks for the decoder ring on Costco price tags!

    T.y. this hit the spot!
    Headed to Costco today so this is a big help..
    Headed up there to find the Kirkland Barolo..
    I just got into wine 3 months ago and have yet to try a Barolo as my wine budget just doesn't allow it..
    I am kind of bummed that my entry into Barolo( if they even have it )is Kirkland but at least i can try Nebbiolo, which i have yet to do..
    Thanks again..

    Great video! Very useful content. I recently tasted a blend from Washington and a Brunello under the Kirkland label. I didn’t purchase them myself and didn’t ask the price, but they were enjoyable. If the Brunello were in the $30 range, I would consider it worth purchasing.

      Thank you for the good feedback. The Brunello is one of the more limited offerings within the Kirkland range. It’s currently not available in my area, but hopefully I’ll see it some point. Thank you Bob for explaining those store lables.
    What would be price start point, for wines aged in reputable french oak barrels?
    Is it realistic to pick anything under $15 that was aged in small good oak barrel?
    Thank you!

    • @bobpaulinskimasterofwine7234
      @bobpaulinskimasterofwine7234  Год назад

      Thank you for reaching out. Oak aged wines can mean a lot of things. It’s not always in barrel. It could be with oak staves inserted into a stainless steel tank or the use of oak chips. The cheapest and crudest manner is through using oak extract. As for French oak barrels, the current market starts at around $1K per barrel. Small oak barrels are generally 225L or equal to 300 bottles. That’s around $3 per bottle just for the oak, if it were 100% oak. The trick is most wineries will use a range of age of oak, small percentage of new, more one, two, three year old barrels etc. To answer your question, it’s possible but the economics only work with a barrels of various ages.

      Hi. Are you talking about the red or white? Both have gone through a lot of change over the years. It's made for a very targeted audience. Can't argue with the success, its done well for many years. With both red and white blends, reds far out perform whites. With Conundrum its different, the brand was originally built on the white blend. Truth be told, I haven't tasted it in probably ten years!

      @@bobpaulinskimasterofwine7234 Agreed. I buy my good wine at Total Wine (because I know it's fresher, because inventory moves faster...AND it's cool in there. Plus, they have a huge wine cellar w LOTSa $200-$25,000 selections). Small specialty wine stores everywhere, unlike the one I used to own, often have slow business (Americans are Barefoot drinkers and Marlboro smokers, let's face it!), and rarely do they store their wines right in the desert heat---it sits there on warm open racks in the light for quite a while, so it's negatively affected. Anyway, I buy a cheap wines at Wally world for my philistine cigar friends. I pour the cheap wine into an empty high end bottle and serve it to them. They ooh and ahhh about how great it is. So do I, because I'm the one drinking the real barolo Dagromis 2018. Lol. Total Wine also hires real somms and wset level 3 and 4's. Wine professionals are highly underpaid. But the underpaid ones that Total Wine in Palm desert really know their labels. That's the function of the demographics. Everybody from Bill gates to Paul Allen to obama lives here. Even the grocery and liquor stores have upgraded wine sections.
