The Montirius episode was one of your best. Love the garrigue and never met a Côtes du Rhône that I didn't want to try or to finish. Saint Cosme and Kermit Lynch are staples. btw. I keep meaning to thank you for the tip on the Rovsya glasses - versatile and have held up well. I rarely feel like I need to go for a special glass.

A series on under the radar wine regions would be good. From France at least I can think of Bergerac, Gaillac, Cahors, Madiran, Chinon, some of the lesser known Bordeaux appellations like Castillon. That's just France, I'm sure there are many more in Italy and Spain.

@@drmatthewhorkey that's a shame. I've been in the wine trade all my professional life and I'm now priced out of certain areas like Burgundy for instance. Cotes du Rhone was probably my first foray into "serious" wine when I started learning more about region and varietal and not choosing wines just on colour and price point. It helped that I was living in Lyon at that time and the reasonable prices and variety of wines that were available. Sitting in a brasserie in Vieux Lyon, sipping on leftover Rhone wine with a platter of Saint Marcellin brings back memories. Ironically, I didn't learn about Cote Rotie wines until I moved to Paris. They were probably outside my budget 😂

Good video, in a trip to Chile last year I tried two cotes du rhone wines and really liked them, even I bought a vacqueyras to take it to Bolivia since here is almost impossible to find old World wine, which brings me to a video idea that might interest you, when you travel to a different country, how do you choose wines to bring back home? Do you prefer to buy wines that you cannot find in USA, or go for the offers, for example a 90 USD wine in US that in the home country is 40 USD, also some tips on how many wines you can bring and how you pack them, these because in the last trip to Chile I bought only World wines impossible to find in Bolivia, but Now thinking about it, I should have bring at least one higher end Chilean wine, that I might find here, but the prices are crazy high.

To be honest, I often struggle with Cote du Rhones - I've tried some well-rated GSMs (even amongst CDP / Gigondas / Rasteau) - but I find that for the price you pay, they can lack depth / length, especially considering the ABV. Smooth and easy-drinking, but I've tended to find them a little uninteresting given that they're often such big wines.

nice you picked the VA and style on the first one , as well on Pegau as with high levels of Brett it is quite the marker here. I know it is a highly revered wine, but some like the style very much...
Presidente is quite a big estate in CDR standards, and is a bargain, with consistant quality. Richaud Ebrescade is a master wine and the whole range is to be sought after.
So many options in the southern Rhône, and south of France, Languedoc is another top pick with more Carignan , many nice estates, one may check most Chateauneuf du Pape like Charvin, Janasse and so manic others. But the upper villages like Baumes de Venise IE, and the Sablet/Seguret area which is juts out of Gigondas area... Rasteau and Cairanne are on a plateau facing the Dentelles and Escaravailles is one to look after, so is Ourea, or La Robin in a lighter and fresh style... Everybody enjoy southern Rhône, one place to go for good value. I have tasted much wines from southern Italy and a little less from Spain, Italy never comes with very good value in the south with Primitivo or Negroamaro, they are off dry and too worked on mostly... Oaky sometimes, only Spain in Navarra so far is able to do some interesting terroir grenache.

Are you sure that Brett can cause meat flavors? I always thought it was limited to barnyard smell and should be avoided.

Yes it can, there are several types of Brett and different people interpret them differently organoleptically... Meaty flavors can also come in young wines after fermentations.

@@drmatthewhorkey That is very cool! Are there any resources that come to mind for an interested wine geek?

There is a lot of literature on the subject, google will be your best friend! I also did a video tasting wine faults that were sent to me a few years ago: ruclips.net/video/c-ViKNRiq84/видео.html

When I first got into wine in the early 80s Cotes du Rhone were one of my first loves Inexpensive around $5 back then but with great flavors not overly tannic and great food wines Still that way today 40 years later! Not too many wines regions can top that It is also interesting to note the differences in the northern and southern wines due to the higher percentage of syrah redfruit vs blackfruit flavors
