I literally just called my local Trader Joe’s and had them hold six bottles for me. I am in Northern Virginia. So excited to see this. I asked him about six months ago and they said they had never carried an Albarino before. So glad that I saw your video. Cheers!!!
Bob, thanks for another great and practical review. This one became one of my go-to's at TJs after trying it late last year. My first car was a 1967 VW Bug so they had me at the label :). Please keep the $10-15 bottle reviews coming -- with an occasional splurge bottle.
Thank you for the suggestion, Bob. Albarino has been one of my favorite inexpensive white wines for 15+ years. I'll try to get this one before it's gone. Cheers!
Albarinño is one of my favorites but during my visit to Galicia this summer I mainly focused on Godello. Next year I might go for Albariño, or maybe Treixadura! One of the best wines I had during my visit was a Godello/Treixadura blend by Sacra activa. Other good ones (and more readily available) were Rigina Viarum Dona Godello and Rafael Palavios Louro do Bolo Godello.
Excellent suggestion Mr. Paulinski. I also tried the Pagos Del Ray Pulpo from Rias Baixas and it was decent. That one was around $14 a bottle. Another great vid and cheers!
@@bobpaulinskimasterofwine What I tasted is exactly how you described this wine. Light and bright is what comes to mind and enough acid to cut through cream based dishes. The 13 percent alcohol is not overpowering at all. I agree this shows like a 15 to 18 dollar bottle. Thanks for doing this review.
My intro to albarino was via the Mark Herold Acha Blanca.....CA albarino and very good from a "cab first" winemaker (broad wine community sentiment, not mine 😂)
I got this wine and another Albarino: Raimat, made from organic grapes for $9. Did you taste this one, Bob? There wasn't a clear winner for me. I thought Raimat had a brighter aroma, but Ruta 49 had a slightly more elegant taste.
Ahhh. Love the grape. I really enjoy Garzon’s version for an everyday one and Zarate Tras da Vina when looking for a lees aged Chardonnay alternative. Great video as always and I’m sure to be drinking plenty of Alvarinho when I’m in Portugal! Cheers!
your timing is spot on, bob. i saw this at my local t.j. yesterday and bought it. i'm currently on an albarino kick since the heat and humidity here in the boson area is intense. this white hits the spot. thanks for this great video. cheers.
Sounds like a really nice summer wine. I'll keep it in mind the next time I'm at Trader Joe's. I tried a few of the inexpensive Italian wines available at Trader Joe's in one of your past videos and was quite happy with a Montpulciano and Chianti you talked about.
Really agree! I had enjoyed a Tangent Edna Valley Albarino at a restaurant here in Orange County, CA, then saw your albarino video, then was at TJ's and saw the Ruta 49 for $9.99. Took a flyer on it and did not regret it - just a great summer wine with nice food pairing possibilities. Thanks for reinforcing my opinion! Oh, uhhhh ... while at TJ's - did you see the Parducci Mendocino chardonnay at a ridiculous low price?
I'm drinking a 2019 Senorio De Beade Albarino tonight. I probably should have been after it before now, but it is still surprisingly good. Great acidity. I had a 2018 Albariño last week. Just trying to clear out the cooler. It was still good but probably past its prime. I guess my point is it seems to have a little life and doesn't collapse like a lot of Sav Blancs or Viognier.
Looks like shelves are emptying in no time! I'm glad albariño is to your liking. I find it a generous grape, really easy to make enjoyable wine out of. Oaked, unoaked, lees, no lees... all interesting, all enjoyable. Cheers!
Albariño is indeed a terrific affordable white wine in the fresh and bright style. Last year, I had a 2020 Aveleda Alvarinho from Vinho Verde, which was decent but somewhat characterless. However, I ended up giving the varietal another chance with a 2022 Martín Códax Burgáns Albariño from Rías Baixas that ended up being a surprising charmer when paired with lighter veggie dishes--particularly loved the lychee/floral notes! This prompted to get a 2022 Artesanio Alvarinho at a can't-miss price. Hoping it's as good as the Burgáns! Do you find general characteristic differences between the same grape from Rías Baixas, Vinho Verde, and Uruguay that we should look for?
Hi Mickey, it’s good hearing from you. The Martin Codax is part of Gallo, they produce a lot of wine, good and consistent. As for Albariño from other places, the citrus, peach, apricot character carries over to different regions. The level of ripeness and acidity will vary, along with the alcohol levels.
I do like a nice Albariño - on its own or with all sorts of seafood. In the UK 🇬🇧 several supermarkets carry good honest BOB bottles of Rías Baixas (Sainsbury's, Tesco's &, my favourite, Waitrose). Nothing spectacularly complex or mind-blowing, just flavourful and well-made. Prices are around £11 ($14) a bottle, so a bit more than your Trader Joe's wine. Earlier in the year, I picked up an outstanding NZ Albariño from an Indie department store. It was from Esk Valley and was an amazing wine and good value too (£15.99 or $20). Tonight is going to be Nipozzano Riserva Rufina with Bistecca.
There’s plenty of very good Albariño at a fair price, although prices are bumping up. I’ve had excellent examples from Uruguay. You’re drinking well tonight. Cheers!

I'll have to go pick up a bottle! Did you get this from the San Ramon location by chance?
It’s worth trying. I first saw it near LA. The bottle in the video was purchased in Concord.
