I totally agree with the things mentioned in this video!! I recently got hired at a trader joe's last month in Seattle and just finished my 13th shift today! I will say, trader joe's is very go-with-the-flow in terms of training and learning about different processes, which might be hard for some people. I worked at starbucks before, which had very distinct, set rules and protocols, so it was a bit of a learning curve, since everyone sort of has their own way of doing things (but always ends up with the same result). This can also be a little difficult while learning, since everyone I trained with did things slightly differently, so it is about doing whatever works best for you and how your brain works!
I had two interviews, one with a mate and one with the captain of the store (basically shift supervisor and then manager). It was very chill and literally was in the electrical room sitting on buckets hahaha. I sort of get really anxious and tried to prepare as much as possible, so I really took time to look at the website and understand what makes TJ's, Tj's - sustainability, diversity, neighborhood shares, 7 values, listen to a podcast episode (ep 2 about the values I think), etc. They will probably ask you your favorite products, so have a few in mind to show you know the products they sell. I heard back about 3 days after my second interview and got a call from the mate - they also told me my starting pay!
The first few shifts will probably feel really overwhelming and seem like a million things are happening at once, but the training process really solidifies the different procedures for stocking shelves, pulling back stock, rotating products, etc. At my store, we do not start training register until about 2-3 weeks of general training, but you do some bagging to get experience being at the checking out area with customers. I was really nervous about bagging, but it is really simple once you get more time doing it - I always ask if customers want cold things together, if they want the weight split between bags, if they are walking, if they want double bags, to ensure all their stuff gets home safely. For register stuff, it's quite simple in that it's just scanning groceries, but there will be some produce codes you will need to know. These should be posted at the registers, but I also made a quizlet to try and help me learn them faster! ( quizlet.com/709868039/trader-joes-produce-plu-codes-flash-cards/ )
About the uniform (at my store at least), the crewmates wear the TJ's tshirt and any pants without holes in them! I've found myself wearing shorts since it is summer, but a lot of people wear carhartt/dickies/other work pants. Also, any close toed shoe works well, I personally wear reeboks and they have been doing good so far. I also think you can ask for more shirts, and at my store we get them for free. I got a pack of 5 and a sweatshirt right when I got hired, but have been offered to get more ordered for me at no cost (but this might be different at other stores).
I can add more or try to respond to people if there are any replies, but I truly have loved the time I have spent at my store so far! It is a very chill environment, and even when it gets busy - its literally just groceries. Yes efficiency is good, but don't rush things so much you do it poorly. Everyone at my store has been so kind and welcoming and it feels like they truly want me to succeed and feel confident in myself and the work I am doing!

@@herodog2442 you technically do not have to memorize them!! My store has a little chart with all the produce and the codes on it at every register. I made the quizlet to try and help myself learn them faster! and good luck, I hope you hear back soon!!!

    Royce,
You appear to be a fine young man, whose not afraid to learn what the rules are and follow them; not afraid to start at the bottom and work your way up; and have a little insight on what you might have to do "outside of the box" to have things go the way you want them to. Your visiting the store in person before you were hired is a great example of that. With the attitude you have, you will develop a work ethic that will give you everything you need in life as far as employment is concerned. Hard work, high morals and the willingness to help others (your making of this video, for example) are some of the attributes that this country was built upon, and young men like you are becoming more rare. You will easily surpass those who have not or will not master the steps of learning as you seem to be doing. (I hate to say "growing up", so let's just say "growing") Every successful "old man" like me (I'm 68) remembers taking the proper steps before they considered themselves successful. If I may give you some advice, it would be to always "pay yourself first" by putting a small amount into a 401k type savings for your retirement years... don't ever take from it, only add to it. When you get a raise, take 1% of that raise to increase what you put into your retirement fund, automatically, every payday. Every year/raise 1% increase. (you'll reach maximum allowed in 10 or 12 years) Then, when you are just a little younger than I am, you will be so glad you did. I never went to college, but I live well now on what I started putting away when I was your age. Heck, by the time you get there, I'll be long dead... but you might still remember my comment when receiving your monthly check from the many hundreds of thousands you have amassed over your career. By the way, I love Trader Joe's... I wish they had more of them in Florida. Good luck, Royce... I have a feeling you will do very well in life. May God bless you.

I filled out an application online and Trader Joe’s just called me to see if I could come in tomorrow. I’m not sure what to expect, if this is the official interview or if it’s going to be a two or three step process. In the hotel industry, I would normally, get the call have one interview and they call you back and let you know you have the job. Anyhow, from what I have read online, it seems like it’s a pretty intimidating job interview process. They ask you a bunch of questions, questions and if you don’t get them right you don’t get hired? Any tips or advice? Thanks in advance!

I appreciate your video as I just applied a couple days ago and am really hoping that I get hired there. Im just worried about my chances of working there being really small when there could be a ton of applicants… they already told me when i made a follow up call that it would take them just a week to sort thru their applications. Im trying not to be overly pushy and call too much though or go in person… unsure if there’s any way i can really do much to garuntee an interview.

I totally understand that feeling of not wanting to be pushy, but from what you described your just communicating and following up which is a green flag to them. If you haven’t heard anything back after the time period they gave you, try reaching out again. Otherwise try apply to another location. Good luck to you!

T J is very discriminatory to older people applying. I was treated very disrespectfully in the interview . I was talked down to at the store on Greenville Ave in Dallas. I went in dressed professionally and a professional resume . Had letters from customers for outstanding customer service and awards from previous companies. I handed them to the lady that was doing the interview and she didnt even look at them and just handed them back and laughed . I'm in great shape and was 64 at the time of the interview. I called to find out what was going on and I spoke store mgr and he told me to hold on and he and he gave her the phone. She told me that they were not bothering me. I asked what went wrong and she said nothing that I was perfect and I said if I'm perfect, why didnt I get the job and she just kept telling that I was great and hung up on me! HR did nothing regarding the derogatory comments that were made! Other employees there had flip flops and cutoff jeans and and they looked like they just woke up.
I went in with a Hawaiian shirt on and my clothes were pressed. It was obvious by what was said to me that there was age discrimination. She leaned into me and? me about that she didnt think that I could do the job and something was said about me being older. They had 2 workers there that had disabilities that were that they couldnt have done the job I could but they were young .I noticed there were no workers not even close to my age but more disabled than I was which made obvious that from the treatment and comment that it was my age! The store mgr Ray is still there and the guy who did the interview with her with me was sarcastic like she was. He is still there too.John is his name and she has left .Everytime I go in there , John is not doing a thing except sitting down and I dont see Ray working either. They are always sitting in the mgrs hub! Useless!!!I spoke to other employees and the were happy she left because the way she treated people. I saw her speaking with a new hire and she spoke to him like was stupid! Her name was Macrenna and I dont go in that store hardly at all because how I was treated .I have shopped at 5 locations and there was only 1 store that I saw someone that that was around my age. I have applied at other stores and when I applied at another TJ in person I dont get a interview I was in another store and there was a guy at this store Walnut Hill Ln. cashiering that had a tank top on ,shorts with threads hanging down flip flops also and look like he hadn't had a bath ing a month . He looked like a dirty guy from Sons Anarchy ! If he would have been clean and dressed for work there wouldn't have been a problem. If I showed up.to my previous jobs like that my employer would have sent me home to clean up and get some clothes that didnt have holes in them because dealing with the public and food and I would have had more self eesoect and I'm thinking . I'm clean cut , mannerly ,work hard , never been in trouble and reliable. You would think they would want someone with these qualities but I guess not That is sad!
