I was interviewed when I applied for the Illinois State Police, back in ‘84, by the district commander, a lieutenant, and the senior master sergeant, who sat behind me where I could not see him. It was a very long interview, technically an interrogation, since they asked many probing questions about my personal life. The final thing asked was “Where do you see yourself in twenty years?”, by the district commander; I told him that I intended to be in his job by then. An idiotic thing to say. I found out later that that answer was the single thing that decided the interview, because though the district commander didn’t like the answer, the lieutenant, and the master sergeant, who was silent the entire time, convinced the district commander that if I had the guts to be that honest, they needed to approve me. As it turned out, many years later I retired from that same district as the senior master sergeant.
I would think that would be the perfect answer. If I were that high up in the chain, I'd be looking for the person that's going to be my replacement. At some point I'd want to retire, and I would want to know the district is going to be in good hands. I wouldn't want to hire people that are just OK with stagnating and staying at the same low to middle level their entire career. It may be OK for some hires, but you also need the go-getters that want to step up and take more responsibility as time goes on.
I wanted to transfer to a different unit in the military. Normally it’s simply a case of whether there is an open spot with your job title but I had made a mistake recently that the new commander had heard about. They requested an interview and when asked about the mistake and why they should choose me, I told them because I had grounded the aircraft myself over a very minor mistake that no one would have ever known about that all of my peers would have ignored. I told them my greatest strength was my integrity. They agreed and signed my transfer on the spot.
What they were looking for was the subtext of I'll follow any order from above and rationalise it as "doing my job" or "just following orders" irrespective of the legality, constitution or morality. By answering "in his job" you signalled that you'd do whatever is asked of you so as to rise through the ranks, which is how he got there himself.

It's a huge waste of my time.
If you just ask the standard boilerplate interview questions, then yes. Using a targeted selection interview process forces even the best interview to think on his/her feet. It helps with the "show me" part of whether this candidate can do the job.
@@Mark-wd5zb That's not what I'm talking about. I don't mean working for them for free. I mean something simple that only takes a few minutes. Fore example. When I interviewed for a sales job the manager asked me to sell him a pen. Two minutes later he couldn't hire me fast enough. Or lets say I'm hiring an artist. I might ask him to draw me a cartoon Pig. That only takes a minute or two but tells me everything I need to know. I don't care if he is good at answering questions. That's not what the job is. I only care if he can draw. No matter how many questions I ask him, that won't tell me if he can draw. But most people would interview the artist and ask him a lot of questions and then hire the person that answers the questions the best. That makes not sense and you end up with employees that can't do the work.
I remember binge watching your interview preparation guides the nights before my two interviews. Today is my second day at that job and I am so grateful to you sir. Thank you, thank you, thank you. God bless you!!
I once flew from San Jose to NYC for an interview only to discover that the interviewer hadn’t read my resume. Worse, he berated me for not meeting the requirements he hadn’t bothered to list in the ad. At least he did reimburse me for the plane ticket and hotel. What a jerk. I ran into him several times afterwards at trade shows and just ignored him.
@@TheCompaniesExpert I have met several times such jerks. One said that he doesn't like university I graduated from in Uzbekistan, other two guys (in two different cases) just said that I gave them wrong answer to a tech question (I am sure that I gave them the right one), many times I was asked about my age, which is illegal of course, but I didn't know how to react, several times I was denied on the ground of being "over-skilled". Can you advice, sir?

5 minutes only. Straight to the point. Useful information given in digestible medium. No repeating ones self. No ones time wasted. I see why you were a CEO. Most RUclipsrs would have made this 25minutes repeating mostly the same point or making statements of the obvious. Thank you for this advice.
I got the job!!! Thanks so much. I watched your videos right before my interview. My Interviewers said that I was so phenomenal they just knew right off the bat that it had to be me. Thank you!
As someone with admittedly poor people skills, these videos really help a lot to understand what the interviewer is looking for. It's all great getting hundreds of interviews lined up based on my resume, but it hurts, it sucks when you leave the interview with a another sting of dissapointment, knowing you just messed that one up again
amen. Ill be at 100 after today's. if I dont get this job then I am just starting my own thing. i may be mentally stronger because of this experience, but society doesnt value that asset so it's basically been a huge waste of time, money and resources.
As someone with Asperger's, it's really difficult to understand the grey area, even with questions that SOUND simple enough to answer. Employers these days need to drop this concept and start thinking about meeting the IQ level of the jobseeker in order to hire their skills. Things need to be black and white, no hidden meanings, first time, every time to eliminate the waste of time with confusion. I'm so glad that you actually explain things in a more black and white clear crystal clarity.
You can definitely see by your presentation that you teach this on the postgraduate level the way you recap what you've covered at the end is extremely valuable and definitely acknowledges that we're only retaining 20%of what we hear and 10% what we read, yet 50% of what we see and hear. I was asked to tell something negative about myself, to introduce myself, why I have never achieved the same position in the company I was working for... I answered everything according to your suggestions in your videos, with full confidence. Guess what, I finally got the job! Many Thanks for your help!
Yep. A safer assumption is that their computer keyword search algorithm kicked out your resume which was later emailed to the interviewer along with "we need you to interview this candidate right now".
I did this. I firmly believe it got me the job. After I did this, the interviewer said, "Well, it looks like you've answered our first couple of questions..." It was a beautiful thing to hear. They couldn't wait to hire me.
I watched this video 3 years ago and is pure gold. The phrase "...and that's what brings ke here today" stuck with me for all this time! You sir have a true talent in communication!

The "other side of the table" perspectives are really true in these videos. It's really refreshing to hear these things since, I have been sitting on both sides of the table and I see this is taught next to none in academic schools for instance. Education is good but then again so are the real life hints and experience. You have to start a career somewhere and these videos do give good ground root for that.

Wow!! God heard my prayers! I’ve been in more than 3 job interviews this week and when it gets to this question:”tell me about yourself” I do talk but I hate it. However, this video helped me to answer that question in a more organized way. Thank you!!
“Tell me about yourself?” That’s a question designed for you to eliminate yourself from the list of applicants, or to hopefully give them the answers to the illegal questions they can’t ask you. Never answer that question with personal information.

Brilliant. Been to many interviews over the years and this is great advice. The only time I knew I was not going to get the job early on in the interview was when the interviewer scanned my CV and said "Hmm you've got more qualifications than I have." Difficult to get out of that one. Later I worked in UK for a large government organisation and the management decided they wanted everybody to list all their major qualifications on their email signatures. It lasted a week. Many senior managers were embarrassed by learning how qualified their teams were compared to them - I know qualifications are not everything but this was priceless as everyone benefits from a little humility every now and then.
I had my first interview for a senior job last week and got called for a second one this week. Just watched this for special insight and realised that I did everything exactly as you said.
I've been watching this over and over to prepare for my interview today, and he asked something completely different 😹 but still, this helped lead to my confidence, and I got the internship! So yayy
I like the sports team analogy. Consider this, I was interviewed for a special education position. I was asked about my administrative license and if I would do that. I mentioned that, for myself, I wouldn't want to switch teaching states and be a new administrator. I believe one or the other, but both may be difficult simulaneously. One of the interviewers was a first year administrator from out of state. They ended the interview and that person walked me to the door. I was okay with that for the following reason: Would I want someone so petty being my supervisor? I know the market is tough, but sometimes it is important to be thankful for the jobs that you don't get.
First time viewer. Solid advice…Thanks for posting it. On a lighter note, I kept picturing the candidate pulling a “Miss South Carolina” on the interviewer. 😂
Thank you! I never thought of going off my resume in reverse. I was able to really explain my story this way. My interview went great. Thanks again for your help!
This is incredible. You have re-created my perception of how to respond to such common questions when looking for a job or changing jobs. I completely agree with you, especially in the area of trying to bring the conversation during interviews back to the job you're looking for, because the circumstances of your previous job role and action may not be applicable today, given the disruption that digitalization has caused. Yes, your experience is important, but the reality of the job at hand should take precedence. Thank you very much.
I watched these videos of yours in the Get Hired series yesterday. I had a virtual interview on Teams this morning, and got a call shortly after from the Operations Manager who said she's going to send me an offer today. I just wanted to say thank you for these great videos that are not overly long. These were really great tips that helped me immensely. Thank you so much for also being AWESOME!!!
Outstanding! I recently had a resume with 8 jobs in the past 3 years. I told her I can tell she is honest by actually providing her true work history and asked her to tell me something else truthful. She told me she did not like being told what to do and until she found a job that allowed her freedom she would not be providiing her services longterm. I thanked her for coming in and to expect a call regardless of the outcome and in the meantime she should seriously consider opening her own business.
I watched about 10 of your videos last night and followed your helpful tips. This morning I interviewed through Zoom and got a job offer on the spot! I have 3 more interviews this week and I feel more prepared than ever.

Because bottom line is, you might have two candidates who both complete that task for your masterfully. And then you have to choose only one candidate. For me to do amazing work for you, ultimately to not get hired for reasons I will never find out, is of no interest to me.
Will you pay me for my time? If not, go pound sand. You're not worthy of my valuable contribution to help make your "business" more profitable.
I remember binge watching your interview preparation guides the nights before my two interviews. Today is my second day at that job and I am so grateful to you sir. Thank you, thank you, thank you. God bless you!!
Congrats, Chukwuka! Sounds like you nailed it!
"Communicate your value"
Truth!!
I once flew 2000 miles for an interview where the exact same thing happened. I feel your pain,
Same thing happened with me ,I applied for something else I got interview opportunity for something else lol
Lucky you didn't end up working for the jackass.
They make you fly across the country for a stupid interview when you might not even get the job meanwhile target down the street from me is doing zoom interviews?!
"Great tip! Following the format from oldest to newest on my resume really paid off. I landed an in-person interview with the panel and received an offer within the same week. Thank you so much!"
I've conducted well over 100 interviews. I can confirm that this method would have worked well on me as the hiring manager.
I have an interview soon... but is the best answer for pay expectation?

5 minutes only. Straight to the point. Useful information given in digestible medium. No repeating ones self. No ones time wasted.
I see why you were a CEO. Most RUclipsrs would have made this 25minutes repeating mostly the same point or making statements of the obvious.
Thank you for this advice.
I got the job!!! Thanks so much. I watched your videos right before my interview. My Interviewers said that I was so phenomenal they just knew right off the bat that it had to be me.
Thank you!
Way to go, Londyc! Glad it worked out
I have a interview tomorrow 😩
As someone with admittedly poor people skills, these videos really help a lot to understand what the interviewer is looking for. It's all great getting hundreds of interviews lined up based on my resume, but it hurts, it sucks when you leave the interview with a another sting of dissapointment, knowing you just messed that one up again
feel you friend. hope youre doing well :)
I feel ya there
That sounds beautiful clear crystal clarity❤
Never talk about your personal business in an interview. Keep it to your professional background and experience. Great info!
You can definitely see by your presentation that you teach this on the postgraduate level the way you recap what you've covered at the end is extremely valuable and definitely acknowledges that we're only retaining 20%of what we hear and 10% what we read, yet 50% of what we see and hear. You're definitely providing tremendous value. Thank you so much for expertise and the effort.
Wow! That's a pretty high-level compliment, Mikel! Made my day!
yes this is very helpfull
I have never heard so much wisdom condensed into such a short space of time. Thank you.
What has helped me the most is being likeable and easy-going. And focusing on what value I am bringing or would bring to them.
Over a month ago I watched this video a night before an interview, and I got the job thanks to it, basically. My first IT role at a big tech company. Thanks a lot, this 5min video is so valuable.
Way to go, Fernando!
A huge thank you for all this content. I've been out of work for 8 years. I watched and learnt from your videos and had 2 job offers this week and have accepted one. Thank you ever so much. This is life changing for me.
Congratulations, Blademan! Things are changing!
I love how you end every of your video by saying "you're awesome". Simple yet impactful to me personally. Thank you!
I just want to say thank you. I used your techniques during interviews and I must say that I feel more comfortable & confident. In addition, I was asked "how do I deal with "stress" and I politely told the interviewer that I don't! She literally said, "I like that!" I expect to hear from this week! Your advice along with some prepping is priceless! 🙏

Great video. Before I watch this series, I never passed the first round interview. Got rejected so many times that I lost count myself. Found this channel just on the weekend before the interview, and now I got a offer!! Thank you!!!!!

Hello, I recently had a job interview about a team manager position. I was asked to tell something negative about myself, to introduce myself, why I have never achieved the same position in the company I was working for... I answered everything according to your suggestions in your videos, with full confidence. Guess what, I finally got the job! Many Thanks for your help!
Way to go, Xiao! Congratulations! I'm glad it worked out
"We're gonna make the assumption that they actually read your resume"
Making a lot of assumptions here
Yep. A safer assumption is that their computer keyword search algorithm kicked out your resume which was later emailed to the interviewer along with "we need you to interview this candidate right now".
And you are assuming that grammar is irrelevant. What on Earth does "gonna" mean?
@@nicholasdalinkiewicz8036 gonna means going to, welcome to the internet my friend
I did this. I firmly believe it got me the job. After I did this, the interviewer said, "Well, it looks like you've answered our first couple of questions..." It was a beautiful thing to hear. They couldn't wait to hire me.
You’re literally changing lives! I managed to ace my interview for a business administration apprenticeship. Thank you so much!
Way to go, James!
I like his vigorous, no-nonsense style. Will definitely watch more of these by Bill
I watched this video 3 years ago and is pure gold. The phrase "...and that's what brings ke here today" stuck with me for all this time! You sir have a true talent in communication!
Thank you RUclips algorithm. I have an interview in 2 days and I get this channel in recommended.
I’m not planning any. WTF??? Maybe destiny knows better????
I used to reply, "What would you like to know?" When I was a kid applying at a grocery store where they were interviewing a 100 other teenagers they were relieved and moved on lol other jobs some people asked more detail some didn't know how to handle it. 50 50 response. This reflection on the resume is way better I love it

Congrats, Dominika! You crushed it!!
I just completed the first phase of my interview and your videos helped me immensely. Being prepared is definitely a big plus! Thank you Bill

Wow!! God heard my prayers! I’ve been in more than 3 job interviews this week and when it gets to this question:”tell me about yourself” I do talk but I hate it. However, this video helped me to answer that question in a more organized way. Thank you!!
I like how right after saying you should repeat the main points as to why you fit the job, he repeats his main point of the video ;)
This has certainly has to be one of the very best "tell me about yourself" video I've come across on RUclips. Thank you so much!!
“Tell me about yourself?” That’s a question designed for you to eliminate yourself from the list of applicants, or to hopefully give them the answers to the illegal questions they can’t ask you. Never answer that question with personal information.
which self? sober me? or....him?
What should i answer then
@@theonlywalltostareat5808 talk about your work related accomplishments and duties not mentioned in your resume or application. Should always have some of those saved for that type of question. Or summarize your resume in more detail.

That's great to hear, Francisco! Way to Go!!!!!!!!!!
So yayy
I'm so glad, YGK! Way to go!
Dodged a bulllllllllet. I would go raving mad having a boss I can't even stand cus of their bossiness
This pops up on my feed out of nowhere amongst coding videos, and the next day i got placed. Kudos man!
First time viewer. Solid advice…Thanks for posting it.
On a lighter note, I kept picturing the candidate pulling a “Miss South Carolina” on the interviewer. 😂

Very true direct and to the point. 👍
Congrats, HelenMarie! You obviously did a fantastic job!
