I worked for the early Trader Joe’s back in 1973, on and off through 1980. My original store was the fifth Trader Joe’s in the chain located in Eagle Rock (Los Angeles). Back then we had around 16 stores total, including Pronto Market locations. While working at the Eagle Rock store, I often was asked to sub in other Trader Joe’s and Pronto locations for a day or two. Back then, we were a glorified 7/11, and open seven days a week, 7 AM to midnight (Trader Joe’s only, Pronto open till 11 PM). The last time I worked for the company, I was at the original Pasadena location for a month during Christmas vacation. Both the first TJ and Eagle Rock stores are still in business. However, the last time I was in the Eagle Rock store, it had been totally renovated and enlarged, and looked nothing like I remember, which was too bad, because the original store had way more character than the current interior design all stores utilize today.
