Something that I believe got lost early in the movie franchise but was present in the first film and the short novel The Hellbound Heart is that the people who seek out the Lament Configuration are hungry for new pleasures, experiences, and sensations, like Frank Cotton, for example. I always got the impression that the box was like a supernatural magnet that attracted people like Frank Cotton. Even in this digital age with all kinds of experiences available online the box would still find new victims because the Internet can only offer vicarious thrills and the people who seek out the box want to experience new pleasures and sensations first hand. While I give Gary Tunnicliff (sorry about the spelling) an A for Effort when it comes to Hellraiser Judgment, his film is just another example of how the franchise lost its way.
I always thought of things like the lament configuration and lovecraftian "spells" etc. as just mysterious advanced technology to pass through to other dimensions and worlds. Nothing supernatural. Just like the late, great Arthur C. Clarke's 3rd law states - any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.
Are there other possible configurations that the box can make if you're not in the mood for lament? What about rapturous or repentance or irascible; maybe just cupcake, everyone can get around to idea of exploring cupcakes especially those mini ones.
You can buy a Lament Configuration, hand built and an actual puzzle box of your choosing. No joke, google it, they aren't too expensive considering they are hand built.
OOO please make a squeal to this video because the comics and books go so much deeper. In the book the hellbound heart you find out there is more then just the lament configuration. In the comics there are multiple things like the puzzle boxes. Also in the comic the U.S government knows about the devices and has a team sent out to try and find them and destroy them. You also find out about the Leviathan
they used to sell a replica of the box at comic conventions by me many years ago. It was funny noone wanted to play with it though you could pick it up and take a look before buying.
Fun fact: In the scene shown in the opening of this episode -- or rather, shortly before it, Vince (Chatterer) couldn't see out of his mask, so when he stuck his fingers in Ashley's (Kirsty) mouth, he stabbed the roof of her mouth really bad with his finger nails. You can see her wince in pain as he accidentally gouges her mouth.

Removed all the heavens like the Monet gardens, and the ancient forests and woodlands, and replaced them with hells. And then sometimes you may find a shop, that sells the beings from the old Norse type concept of Hel - the interior of the Earths body. And then you may find guidance back to heaven again, from the energetics of the crystals, gems, rocks, fossils, this despite the mining that would have landed them there - it too is a hellworld invention of the fall from heaven. I think, if it was real, we would see cenobites in the lime light. It would almost be an entire new race of people. Most celebrities would end up as cenobites, and some would even try to remain as such but would drop into their new way of thinking. Snuff movies would be on the raise as cenobites release footage of people getting mutilated or transformed. With that, more boxes would appear, being used as the new drug. People would gladly offer themselves not fully knowing what will happen, and some of the younger ones would do so out of rebellion. There would be a public outcry against the box, and it's use, and the cenobites. There would be people trying to undue the change to the cenobites, fruitless as it would be. Eventually Earth would be the new hell, and the cenobites would look to the stars for new flesh.
Tech works for He'll Girl without the need for her and her cohorts to type. You get her attention through your desire, the technology just facilitates the call to your need. So why would not the same work for Pinhead. After all he will pass you over if you don't have the desire.
Now it's canon that the Cenobites come from just one of multiple Hell dimensions and the last crapfest movie confirmed Heaven dimensions. Now does the puzzle box open ANY dimension, dependent on intent and how the puzzle is solved, or does it only open the Cenobite's dimension? Are puzzle boxes keyed to only a particular dimension or can it open any depending how it's solved? If anyone knows an in canon answer, I'm curious.

l always, saw the cube representing the heroin. the deamons that appear, tearing you appart and no escape possible for the lost souls diving into the hell of opiods. l saw friends die from heroin in pain and agony. not even the hells priest could do a better job at it.
Hellraiser domination, a spin off if the lament configuration was seen as a holy relic and humanity was shaped under the watch of the Hell Priest. Kind of similar to that really cool VHS short flim where the guy switches places with his dimensional self, but turns out his dimensional self lives in some kind of hellish equivalent of earth. Humans look equal to there cenobite overlords and pain/pleasure is both desirable and sought after, by all.

I always find that a horror villian loses its fear when a film explores their orgin. Freddy Kruger was the scariest in the original film, along with Jason Vorhees, Michael Myers, and yes Pinhead.

I imagine that a real lament configuration would become quite the sensation in the real world but i doubt that it would take too many people, certainly not whole towns, simply because in the original movie and the novel, the cenobites never went out looking for victims. Their victims always came looking for the box themselves of their own free will, and it would remain that way IRL. I never imagined the cenobites the way they were portrayed after the first film, as these hand wringing, plotting demons trying to take over earth. they were simply (as they themselves put it) explorers of the farthest reaches of sensation. they only forced those who summoned them by playing with the box to come back with them because 90% of the time their victims knew full well what they were getting into, and perhaps because while their waking minds would never admit to wanting to be skinned alive, to have molten lead poured down the throat and intestines tugged slowly from a ragged wound on a spiked barrel cranking slowly, in their heart of hearts there is a secret craving to know those sensations. to know what it feels like to have their muscles bare to the wind and genitals messaged by barbed passages and objects. And that is why then the methods of discovering the lament configuration might get updated. chain letters, memes, dark web forums, maybe even something as archaic and mundane as fliers in the post or on your windshield after having been scouted by facilitating entities of hell. I think if it was real the internet would also be used. There are shadier sides of the internet and either by accident or by direct search we would see people stumble upon it. Maybe the site would feed you with small drips first that would see you returning again and again each time for more and more, until finally it judged you ready for the Cenobites and it would present you with the option of summoning them.
You know, Pinhead stopped when Kristy asked him to, which automatically makes him a better Dom than Christian Grey. Having known people in The Scene I don't think true practitioners of BDSM would go for the Lament Configuration. The first rule is Safe, Sane, and Consensual, which we see that the Cenobites don't really follow. Oh, you can say those who desire to open it consent, but even Frank Cotton wasn't imagining being torn asunder but rather that he'd be rewarded with a willing harem of young women to play with as he desired, not to be a plaything. Well they had to hang it on the wall so people would stop fucking sitting in it to see if anything would happen. I'd think the internet would turn it into a joke and create speed runs for solving it, competitive puzzle solving, money prizes, etc. For everyone's shallow entertainment. If the Lament Configuration was real, I myself would see how many DIFFERENT portals it could open. Why should it open a gateway straight to Hell? The point is, i think the cenobites have always, at the core of their concept, been less about being horror movie icons and more about the initiation of those souls capable of appreciating the sensations mortal flesh cannot support without extradimensional assistance, and that they would not go out looking to storm earth, but would merely be content to embrace the sado-masochists who managed to summon them. if anything, the amount of people joining the realm of "hell" would increase greatly, then plateau, and trickle away until the sensory perversions they offer fell out of vogue yet again, and they would wait, all the while instructing the new children of hell in the ways of agonizing pleasure and, when those rare few show themselves to be true seekers like pinhead and his gash, promote them to cenobites, instructing them on how to inflict the pleasures of hell to maximum effect for the day when they will be needed to do their part, perhaps while their mentors go into a hibernation of numbness in order to re-sensitize their long abused nerve endings, to regain that hunger for inflicting hell's pleasures.

Having known people in The Scene I don't think true practitioners of BDSM would go for the Lament Configuration. Honestly, I think it would turn into a meme. You know that chair in Russia that if you sit in it you supposedly die? Well they had to hang it on the wall so people would stop fucking sitting in it to see if anything would happen. I'd think the internet would turn it into a joke and create speed runs for solving it, competitive puzzle solving, money prizes, etc. For everyone's shallow entertainment. I'm sure there'd be more than a few who would succumb to the pleasures of the box at those gatherings, and times would be good for the cenobites and leviathan, but it would become a meme.
