In a world where a lot of vampire media centers around really good looking people pretending to be teenagers, it’s always refreshing to come across a movie where vampires don’t sparkle in the sun, they don’t have daylight rings, and they’re shown as what they truly are: Monsters.

Personally, I would love a month without sun. I love the dark and cold. It feels clean and introspective to me. I don't understand why people dislike the dark. I have worked the night shift for fifteen years and I have have always been a night person, so I sleep during the day and I am up at night. I love it. I look at the day as everyone else's time and the night as my time. I guess that's one of the reasons I like vampires. Without the killing people part of it, I could easily be a vampire. I'm already nocturnal.

ANY human who is working with vampires in a movie or story should immediately be considered a Renfield until proven otherwise. The thing they want is immortality. That's why they suck up to vampires. This movie was a great new take on vampires. I love the book and my biggest gripes with the movie vs the book was that they created a relationship issue between Eben and Stella when in the book they were the law enforcement team with no other relatives and were strongly in love. It made Eben sacrifice at the end more heartbreaking then what they did in the movie. That loving relationship was the core of the book. They also expanded on the vampires society in the book that could have lead to more in a movie series but they did not include it. Great re-review.

@@TwistedTeaRex Sort of but the familiar is 100% willing to be of any service to the master/vampire, with its only wish to become a vampire themselves. They work towards this by being as good of a familiar as they possibly can, proving their worthiness of becoming one of them. Those that fail, especially more than once or show poor worthiness will only end up being used and never turned and will almost always end with their death. The familiar isn't so much a slave as more of a willing volunteer. Less so a servant and more a tutor in a sense. Devotion and obedience yes, but with a reward of eternal "life" as the ultimate goal.

    • @justsomedudeyouknow8372
      @justsomedudeyouknow8372 3 месяца назад +9

@@TwistedTeaRex Typically a vampire clan will have one or sometimes two familiars, whereas a solitary vampire without a clan will have their own personal familiar. Each clan has its own hierarchy. The larger the clan, the deeper the hierarchy, the more familiars there will be. Think of a familiar more like an extremely motivated assistant, learning more and more as it goes to be a better assistant, evolving to hopefully one day earn the honor to be turned. Often familiars are used as blood bags as a sign of supplication and dedication. In some lore a familiar can be partially turned at some point during their training so they have heightened strength, night vision, or other abilities that vampires posses, but not as strong or as much. This way they can serve their masters better than an average human and its a sign they have reached a milestone in their training. A level they have achieved.

30 Days of Night is such a great survival horror movie, it introduced us to a town full of friendly townspeople that all have a bond with each other because of all the years they dwelled in the town together, and the movie did a pretty good job of establishing some of the townspeople that pushed forward to survive, and it also does a good job of making us the audience care about each of the survivors, they don’t end up being the cliche nameless fodder for the vampires.
The Vampires are very terrifyingly smart and very brutal and cruel to the townspeople that they are all preying on, they just want to feast on who they can, while they can, and they make sure that their victims don’t turn into vampires by viciously decapitating, mutilating, or burning them after feasting on their blood.
Marlo seems to be a strong tribal type of leader to his Vampire Army, and he probably only decides to turn somebody and welcome them into his army if they earn his respect and he trusts them to be a new vital element to his army.
Eban is a great main character and leader to the group of survivors that he promised to protect and hopefully survive til the sun rises.
Josh Hartnett played the role very good and you really felt for his character because of all the tough quick decisions that he always had to make in order to keep himself and the group of survivors breathing for another harshly cold night.

I don't normally do horror, but certain films "do it" for me. I took a chance on this with little hope, but it was great.
Same with another movie, Dog Soldiers. One of my fave horrors of all time.
Sometimes great movies just don't get traction and proves it's worth taking a chance.

That would be Ben Templesmith artwork. His work is very distinctive. It's very dark. He almost always illustrates horror comics. You can recognize one of his comics as soon as you see it. The first book I bought of his was called Welcome to Hoxford. It's similar to 30 Days of Night in that it involves horror creatures trying to use an environment to exploit for feeding. In Welcome to Hoxford, a Russian organization owned by Werewolves runs privately owned maximum security prisons, which hold the most dangerous prisoners. They use it as a hunting preserve because they enjoy hunting dangerous game. It's really good!

Billy definitely was a shock I wasn’t ready for. I wish they did more with the stranger as well & I was always mad at Stella for saving that kid forcing Evan to turn. Great review!

One of my favourites! The only thing is I wish they made it into a series, like 10 episodes that are about 40 minutes to an hour each. It'd make much more use of the 30 Days without having to jump ahead weeks at a time, and it would show how the characters managed to keep going during those time jumps. Plus, more time with the characters and vampires
Again, still one of my favourite movies, but I think it'd have been even better as a series

Ebon, as in ebony, means black or night. Stella is short for stellar, sun/star/light. That's really good naming because on one hand this hints at the plot of the film, which lives and which dies, but in a way it also does explain your question of why they're separated. They are opposites, even if they do love each other.

This movie gave me so many nightmares when I was pregnant about 15 years ago. I worked at a movie theater and after my shift, some coworkers and I decided to stay and watch the movie. I did, and then after that I stayed scared for years lol. I was like wow okay this is what real vampires would be like, and this is actually really terrifying. And when youre pregnant, you have absolutely crazy dreams, and I had the most insane dreams the entire 6 months after I saw it. And during the evening when I'd be walking my dog, I'd see these silhouettes on the rooftops and freak myself out because I wouldn't even be thinking about it but then it would pop up subconsciously. It was terrifying lol.
I still cant watch it. I tried about 10 years ago and bought the movie and didnt get through it and tried again a few years after that and just was like, nope, it's never gonna happen, stop trying to make fetch happen! I don't have any problem with scary movies, it's just this one. I can watch just about anything thats supposed to be scary, but for some reason I just can't get through this movie again. They scared the hell out of me and just thinking about it makes me want to pull my feet up from the floor and get under a blanket. But I saw this video and I was like oh this is different, its not the movie lol. And I still had to stop it. I watched the special features on the dvd over and over and laughed at it and then turn the movie on and have so much anxiety and tension lol. And nightmares.
Literally nothing else scares me like this does. I had a dream about the movie when I worked there before I even saw the movie, about the main girl and I in a truck and it crashing, and then watched the movie and the truck crashed. I was like 3 months pregnant and woke up convinced I was going to die by vampire attack in a truck with the girl from Blood & Chocolate 😂 absolutely insane time of my life. I spent the entire pregnancy with nightmares and vampires, which is absolutely crazy for me. I can usually get out of those types of dreams, and go lucid, but I'd be stuck in them and they'd be soo real. Like getting grabbed outside walking my dog and being pulled over the bricks or under the car or under the fence. The truck crash was weird, I figure I'd seen that part somehow before watching it and dreamed it, so when I saw that part the deja vu made me panic in mu seat. Absolutely insane lol. I havent thought about this movie in a few years, so here it all comes 😂

I think the perfect representation of a vampire unites the image of the beast with the image of beauty. Christopher Lee expresses this perfectly. I really enjoyed your video.

It's not a film but the show "The Strain" is full of vampire-esque zombies and the 1st season might just be one of my favorites. There are great elements in the following seasons but season 1 is the season with the most confusion and mystery building forces. Basically everything up to the Eclipse and a little after. If you haven't seen it, The Strain is one of the good ones (outside of season 2 and 3 Zach, that little scumbag).

It's almost a cosmic horror story really, the perspective of the vampires is alien, not merely like that if a conventional predator, like technically humans are predators as well, but the blood lust and inconsistent focus (despite intelligent and careful leadership) they seem to have is almost spiritual, rather than merely sadistic. They don't really seem to fully understand humans anymore, and that's not a new trope by any means, but I do think this film revived it beautifully. Like, it's not a plot hole that the vampires neglected to look in the attic even after dude and his son came out of the house, it's just a result of the vampires developing a new fixation and completely forgetting that they must have been hiding in an attic... And there might be others as well. They also never found Billy despite several instances on film where they are searching what appears to be the same area multiple times throughout the month. Never thought to create traps more elaborate than baiting the survivors into the open, even though they are clearly intelligent, their priorities are seemingly not what one would expect from a mere "monster". When he says "No God." It sounds almost like Nyarlathotep itself is speaking, mockingly, to the poor woman, a cold statement of fact, born not from malice, but from knowledge. And that is the soil from which cosmic horror is grown.

Obsessed with this movie, I need to read the comic one of these days. Random aside, I always felt they were pretty hard on the other cop who killed his family. He was trapped in his house with his family, no one to help. The vampires like to torture and drag out the deaths so a mercy kill before they got found was terrible but almost preferable if they couldn't get out. Eben can talk big about protecting his family because he's protecting adults/an older teen who can somewhat support themselves or cope a bit better than a child in that situation, and he's not alone even if he has taken on that leadership responsibility.
