It seems "unfair' to me that an "innocent' (like the girls that get lured up to the guy's room in HR 3) get sent to hell when they didn't open the box or anything. Yes they are murder victims, which sucks too, but to get sent to hell for eternity as well seems a bit screwed up and for lack of a better term, against the rules.

That was Pinhead’s evil half. The chaotic being created from being separated from Elliot Spencer. It doesn’t make much sense that Pinhead and Spencer aren’t the same, but that’s the explanation in film.
So the pillar is a torture device & a 2nd chance limbo gateway if needed. Intriguing idea, never realized it. It's also a side of Leviathan that we haven't really seen too. A loving redemption side, you'd think once you lose its favor, it be dead to you. But it gave Pinhead/Priest a chance to come back.
I feel like the third film was more based on cool imagery that then has to fit the story afterward, because when the pillar comes out of the mattress it looks very different.
Either it was your voice, the details of the film or the imaginary, or maybe all three, but this admittedly projected a tone that kind of scared me. I watched this on a bright sunny day and I’m a full grown adult....very nice work Mr H!

I was at the second unit shoot for Hellraiser 3, and saw the Pillar of Souls in person (big Doug Bradley sized hole in it). So many stories I can tell you.
See the think is in number 3 pinhead didn't want to return or serve hell he had his own dilemma create his own hell and destroy the box so he would never have to return. His own soul knew this and knew the only way to send him back and restore balance is by Eliot Spencer uniting with his body so that he could be sent back. See I think pinhead wanted revenge on leviathan for using the doctor to kill him. What better way than to create his own cenyobyte army and his own hell on earth. Thus denying leviathan souls.
The Cenobite rules of engagement were softening in the first movie, started falling apart in 'Hellbound' and went straight out the window by the time Pinhead started slaughtering whole nightclubs of people in Hellraiser 3.
When I saw this in my inbox all I could think of is Warhammer so I got over hyped. Still great video as always and something I never understood in the movies/book.
The 3rd movie was slightly controversial for me. It seemed like they threw out the rules for who the Cenobites could come for by taking souls that weren't seeking them out. On the other hand, it was even more terrifying to think that even being a good person wouldn't protect you from being dragged to hell if hell got the chance!

What would happen if Doomguy from the Doom video game were to open the puzzle box? What would Pinhead and the other cenobites do to the man who fought his way out of hell with a shotgun, chainsaw, BFG, and scared all manner of demons shitless by reputation alone by the time the fourth video game came out?

I liked dante's inferno how the guy found Redemption and new the only way to stop satan from leaving hell was to pray to god with a sincere heart that he accepted his punishment and it was just but only asked god to not allows satan to leave. Depends. If you do research about he belief systems you will notice there are a lot underworlds even though the most don't contain punishment or torture. So if you include every underworld as "hell" then yes, even one ruled by the goddess named "Hel". In the christianity version you will find countless version of "hell" so yeah...luckily it is all fictional.
I believe so. For it is said that many of the great counts, dukes, and princes in Hell each reign over their own legions. Therefore, Leviathan and the Cenobites are but one legion of many. Also, in the new Hellraiser: Judgement, it looks like we'll be seeing new demons from a different sector of Hell in addition to Cenobites.

I figure that the pillar of souls is a "part" of the Leviathan. The box is a touchstone (i would use portkey but I doubt JKR would like that)and once solved it allows for a wider aspect of the Leviathan to show through.
It may be worth comparing similar objects from different media. The pillar to the doorway in Devil's Advocate for example. This type of object is rather common with depictions of hell. Usually it's a sort of window or door way to hell which is held shut with souls trapped either trying to escape or in the process of being pulled down.
After Hellbound was filmed, the crew filmed a short called "No More Souls" where Pinhead pulls the nails out of head & Chatterer & Butterball mutilate him & nail his face onto a torture plank (what you're calling pillars of souls). The image on his face on a plank can be seen in the final scene where the plank rises up. After this time before the beginning of Hell On Earth, the plank forms into the Pillar Of Souls.

That sounds about right considering once the . Puzzle box is solved the pillar of souls an the cenobites . Show up about the end of the 2nd an the 3rd movie . At the end of the 2nd one Pinhead turns back . Into Eliot Spencer then gets killed . In the 3rd movie Eliot Spencer is in limbo but the empty . Shell as he put it or The Hell Priest or Pinhead . Was next to the pillar so maybe since the Hell Priest or Pinhead I personally prefer Hell Priest . It seems more fitting that characters intelligence . But that part was made in hell like the pillar of souls. So it kinda makes sense that the shell of the Hell Priest would . Become one with the pillar of souls because they were both made in hell . Until The Hell Priest could continue to gather souls . Minus the little part where the shell or Pinhead . Went rogue because he was not fallowing the rules. But no plan is 100% fool proof.
Reminds me of that pillar in one of the Poltergeist movies near the end with a pillar of tortured souls from a mad preacher or something like that....I think it was one of the Poltergeist movies, it's been a long time since I saw that movie.

Okay this may sound waaaay out there but here it goes! My first thoughts of the Pillar of Souls from the first movie was like you said a torture device, but to me it seemed as also part trophy device, and yes part transportation device to send Pinheads victims to hell. Though what I'm wondering is was the transportation due to the pillar itself or due to Leviathan? My thoughts are what if the Pillar itself is its own consciousness? Created slowly over the coarse of the centuries of torture and trophy's, it became aware, it became its own life. What led me to this was at the end of Hellraiser 2, the Pillar had the baby with its lips sewed shut that was first shown in Tiffany's memories. Adding not just trophy's of flesh to it, but tophy's of memories. I wonder if that's why Pinhead was taken into the Pillar in Hellraiser 3. Maybe him and the entity that was created from the Pillar had a bond and it wanted to protect him. Sorta like the way a mother would protect their child. The Pillar acting as a mothers womb, waiting for their child to be born.

What if we mixed the 3 most popular things (Cthulhu Mythos, Godzilla and Hellraiser) in this channel into 1 movie? Like the people of 23rd Century Earth are sent into turmoil by Godzilla fighting with monsters like Inferno Rodan or Diamond Krystalak, so an ancestor of Kirsty (as the 23rd Century Hell Priestess) drags Godzilla down to hell. Godzilla fights his way out, becomes reborn as a cenobite Godzilla (Cenozilla? Godbite?) and then fights the now-awakened Cthulhu? ................No? OK.
Yeah I listen to the Audible of Hellbound Heat with Clive Barker narrating. It was awesome and I thought he did mention something like that. I highly recommend the Audio Book it is on YT.

Deader was meh to me, but can't say for sure how you would like it, its kinda slow going but does bring up the Necromancy aspect of the Lamerchant family tree
Cool stuff but your view about the hellraiser franchise should be based on Clive Barker's work, not those dumb films which has followed the master work, the pillar of soul is not cannon, it is just a decoration.. Even I loved hellraiser 2-3-4, they are just poor imitations of what the twisted imagination of mr barker can create.

Hey, Mr. H. Have you read Clive Barker's Imajica? I would **LOVE** to see some content around that. It puts the hellbound heart/Hellraiser to shame as far as content goes. It's purely literary, which I assume makes it difficult for your audience, but damn. There's some good stuff in there right up your alley.

Okay this may sound waaaay out there but here it goes! My first thoughts of the Pillar of Souls from the first movie was like you said a torture device, but to me it seemed as also part trophy device, and yes part transportation device to send Pinheads victims to hell. Though what I'm wondering is was the transportation due to the pillar itself or due to Leviathan? My thoughts are what if the Pillar itself is its own consciousness? Created slowly over the coarse of the centuries of torture and trophy's, it became aware, it became its own life. What led me to this was at the end of Hellraiser 2, the Pillar had the baby with its lips sewed shut that was first shown in Tiffany's memories. Adding not just trophy's of flesh to it, but tophy's of memories. I wonder if that's why Pinhead was taken into the Pillar in Hellraiser 3. Maybe him and the entity that was created from the Pillar had a bond and it wanted to protect him. Sorta like the way a mother would protect their child. The Pillar acting as a mothers womb, waiting for their child to be born.

Yeah I listen to the Audible of Hellbound Heat with Clive Barker narrating. It was awesome and I thought he did mention something like that. I highly recommend the Audio Book it is on YT.

Cool stuff but your view about the hellraiser franchise should be based on Clive Barker's work, not those dumb films which has followed the master work, the pillar of soul is not cannon, it is just a decoration.. Even I loved hellraiser 2-3-4, they are just poor imitations of what the twisted imagination of mr barker can create.
