    I utterly love this notion of the realm of hellraiser, as it inspires a whole new narrative that would allow for so many amazing separate stories to unfold in new dynamic ways. I honestly feel somewhat sad that it was never allowed to grow into something Lovecraftian and fresh.

      I agree. You could see stories of how the changes in hell happened, which was hinted about when Angelic (not sure her name) came in an was the first summoned by the box. Or even showing how the Leviathan went from the statue we hear about in this idea, to being a larger version of the box in later version.

      Yeah, the films did embark on the fanciful and borderline ridiculous after HR2, then seemed to remember 'their' roots with the Wire Twin episode and the most recent film. Just seems like so much wasted celluloid in between. The entire series, imo, could be likened to humans as one goes from prepubescent (parts 1 & 2) to and through the 'awkward stage' of young adulthood (everything from 3 to the Wire Twin iteration, the Box in Space being the most awkward growing pains) culminating in a newly formed adult that still resembles the youngster we all knew and loved yet having a mind of its own and making decisions us 'parents' don't necessarily approve of, but can appreciate as part of its search for knowledge and being which is unfortunate as we (the fans and the films) don't really communicate or see much of each other anymore.

    My main gripe with the hellraiser lore is how it’s sort of become contrived in its use of religious themes or ideology. The hellbound heart seemed almost like a modern day lovecraftian type of sci-fi horror story, with the cenobites being inter dimensional beings, and all the religious themes were more to kind of ground the story into something we could contextualize. But ever since then it seems like the idea of “demons to some, angels to others” has become more literal, with pinhead actually being in hell (religious hell) as opposed to some void of torment. The idea that the box summoned these entities from another dimension just seemed much more appealing to me than the familiar good vs evil, heaven/hell, etc.

    • @WAX1138
      @WAX1138 5 лет назад +17

      Right.
      I like the ides and love the pictures. My concern is how to build a story around it. What are the stakes? What conflict? How do we as a audience relate?
      So far Hellraiser works best as a subtle force. The consequence of terrible and dumb humans who seek something mind-raping that they will never be ready for, and a punishment for all their deeds of getting there. That's why none of the sequels work because they tried to make it into a slasher like Freddy. I think as a story the world of Hellraiser works best as like a spider hidden in the shadows who which the characters are unaware as they dance ever closer to the web through their misdeeds, animal impulses, & ignorance. Also there still needs to be mystery and haveing everything spelled out and put up on screen leaves little to the imagination.

      Eric Faith curious why yiu believe that. Assuming religion as fiction or otherwise, the source of the leviathan predates jeudo-christian beliefs, and...
      “Jewish sources describe Leviathan as a dragon who lives over the Sources of the Deep and who, along with the male land-monster Behemoth, will be served up to the righteous at the end of time. The Book of Enoch (60:7-9) describes Leviathan as a female monster dwelling in the watery abyss (as Tiamat), while Behemoth is a male monster living in the desert of Dunaydin ("east of Eden").
      When the Jewish midrash (explanations of the Tanakh) were being composed, it was held that God originally produced a male and a female leviathan, but lest in multiplying the species should destroy the world, he slew the female, reserving her flesh for the banquet that will be given to the righteous on the advent of the Messiah”

      @@justwannabehappy6735 Leviathan is one of the prime entities in the realms of boundless pain and pleasure..it isn't per say a living conscious but a force of nature built by God to manage over the damned. The leviathan is really an advanced a.i. built by God to run that particular and specific realm of hell.
      When you see the spinning wooden posts with chains and body parts, that represents the leviathan. Symbolism of it.
      The dr. from the 2nd one understood this and understood the leviathan wasn't a being like pinhead. It didn't have a human spirit. It was apathetic and neutral and only had one purpose put forth for it. To manage and run that particular realm or level of hell.
      He hacked it. Becoming of the few mortals besides pinhead and a few others in the series to become a cenobite and he actually became more powerful than pinhead. This is where the "pleasure" comes in. Being a cenobite, living forever, doing all the mad experiments you want, no repercussions, God can't touch you, sin all you want, be evil...do whatever! Total freedom! And almost god like abilities to be as perverse and evil as you want.
      The dr gained the ultimate "pleasure" for a sinner. That wasn't it's design. Pinhead and that dr. becoming a cenobite was never meant to be.
      There are many levels to it. Each level has a "leviathan" or an "overlord". This particular leviathan created the cenobites in order to go out and get the damned. Like tentacles.
      In all reality, pinhead is just a lawnmower for God to cut down sinners. In the novella, it hints toward all this. Is he really evil? No, pinhead isn't "evil".
      Pinhead is just doing what he is programmed to do. Like an animal and his human spirit is actually a virus in his coding. The very existence of cenobites wasn't supposed to happen and pinhead and them are an anomaly. It was always just supposed to be the realms of hell and the "overlords" or in that particular realm of hell, the leviathan.
      This is where the series hints at a "lucifer" who controls the "leviathan" even thought it was God who built it. Hence, why were getting cenobites to reach out like tentacles. That was never it's intended purpose.

    The problem with the Pinhead character being a mantle that is passed down from cenobyte to cenobyte is that Doug Bradley played the character so perfectly that unless there's a clear distinction in appearance, voice, and personality, that any character will seem like a pale imitation. To pull this off, you'd need an accomplished character actor like Sam Niell or Hugo Weaving which is unfortunately outside the budget of any Hellraiser film because they need to spend most of it on effects.

    Everything looks so over designed that this looks like Hellraiser as designed by Ed Boon!
    Also no monster in history has become "More Scarier" by having every aspect of it's background and motivation exposed and explained.
    Monsters are only scary when they are mysterious, once you know what a monster has for breakfast and know how it likes to spend its Thursday afternoons, then the monster has been robbed of all of its intrigue and menace.
    Monsters benefit for vagueness, whereas human villians benefit from having their motivations and desires explored.
    An example being The creature from The Thing is terrifying because it's motivation and desires are as indeterminate as its physical form.
    Wheras Tony Soprano becomes more intriguing the more we get to learn about him, as his motivations and background inform his current behaviour, but he still has a level of intrigue to an audience as his Sociopathic mindset is alien to most people.

      Not all monsters are alike. Otherwise it becomes all he same. It's just there and it chases you. ORIGINS is a mythos set in Hell. It's an epic saga of horror fantasy. Not your typical Boo! Aahh! Fanfare. I do understand what you mean though. A lot of horror tends to over explain. But Origins is a chronicle.

      SpeedBoost.... I don't agree with any of this (well maybe the Tony Soprano part). But I can't even think of an example where revealing back story, and motivations detracts, except for when it is done poorly, which is most of the time.
      The statement made in your comment must be the new law in Hollywood governing Horror stories about Monsters. I have heard this many times before, I guess people really believe it.
      For example: Beowulf. Grendel is scary as fuck... then Beowulf ends up at his home and meets his mother,. ... it gets even scarier. An what about Leatherface? He got way scarier after we got to see where he lived and met his family. If it was just him chasing people around with the chainsaw, it would have left very little impression.
      I have seen many movies about "boogeymen" with characters that are thinly rendered and become a vehicle for jump scares... and sometimes snarky humor.
      I don't think we are going to be told that Pinhead's motivation is that he needs to sell more magazine subscriptions, so he can go to summer camp.... that would suck... but really, I can't tell you how many times I've watched a movie where I am thinking ... wow... this is starting to get interesting...THE END... Credits roll.
      Especially in the last 2 decades, not so much before that.
      with respect.

    • @scaccu
      @scaccu 5 лет назад +1

      @@pheresy1367 except Beowulf wasn't intended to be adapted to a movie but it was an ancient tale that was written as they used to told it.
      For example every single Grimm's tale isn't written with the intent of the last minute plot twist, the shoking relevation etc...
      in that case that was more about the moral of the story and what the protagonist'd do in order to save himself, not about who is the antagonist, which usually is described since his first appareance.
      Hellraiser's fortune was ENTIRELY based on the mystique that surrounds the Cenobytes, their lack of rage and purposes...
      this new approch is going to bomb badly.

    • @pheresy1367
      @pheresy1367 5 лет назад

      @@scaccu Well I'm no expert. My point of view comes from my own personal observations. It seems to me, there is plenty of room to explore the mystery that deeply teased us in the first installation (be it movie, or the novella). As we come closer to the characters in the story, another layer of revelation is shown which then opens the door for more questions and possibilities....and .... also opens the door to ruin everything, if the creators don't "get it".
      When I saw the first HR, and then the book, I recognized that this was a story never told by Hollywood before. There was something about it that rang true in a way that I didn't have words for. A story like this has to be told by someone that understands how this world works, and how the players play out. I'm not entirely sure Clive is the only person that is capable of rendering it...or ...even if Clive is capable.
      or
      We can keep the Cenobites as a horror device that we never get to know anything about... and just go ahead and tell a different story that we've already seen a thousand times before.
      Creative visionaries want to tell their original story, while the producers with the money just want to tell the same old story that has always made money for them... This has been the classic conflict in movie making since the beginning of Hollywood.
      I picked the example of Beowulf, because it's the oldest story that we know written down in (Old) English language. It's a story about darkness, and terror, and about mysterious predators that can devour the strongest of the strong... and... can be seen metaphorically on many levels. That is a great story. That's the kind of story I would love to see HR continue as... Like LOTR, or GoT... only very different.... :)

Sure it should be Anime too, but there is no reason not to go all out on the live action version, if they can get it away from Dimension.... or get some funding for it because they get the right creative team for it, and it would be awesome when done right.... what they probable will never understand.
      nevermind

      P Heresy yeah but see that’s the thing, having the movie based entirely in Hell would cost a huge budget to actually create the Hell world that the movie is based in, and instead of having it as like an anime, they could make it into something like the old Resident Evil CGI movies and they’d save alot of money doing it that way.

      666ang I agree they wouldn't be so restricted they could go all out and also hopefully pick up a lot more fans along the way. Let's put it to Mr H and see what he thinks he might be the one to get the ball rolling he's got a bit of reach to put it to certain people if its a no then nothing lost buuuuut if its yes then we could have the next best hellraiser just waiting to be unleashed on old and new fans alike. Here is hoping a good go fund me to raise some of the starting costs to pay some people to do a short if successful then you never know what could happen and if not its good to dream.

      barry ! Exactly man, so yeah hopefully he does see this and put it out there. I feel this would be a good beginning to this new generation and old Hellraiser fans also with Spiderman Into The Spiderverse doing so well and being animated. I know it has nothing to do with this but it is a really good example lol

    There was always talk of an order a hierarchy to hell with angelic choosing to come down and play with us mortals via temptation and anguish. I would love to see the whole pantheon, rank and file! =D

    What I love about the movies, is that they show the upmost lowest levels of Hell. And your imagination can really just go anywhere with the movies. They show the most depravity that the soul can and could experience.

    I think it should have been “lord high priest”, instead of “high priest lord” as that is quite a mouthful.

    I THINK THE OG PINHEAD IS A LOT SCARIER. THESE NEW DESIGNS LOOK MEDIOCRE (NOT SCARY AT ALL).
