Ironman was feeling guilty he indirectly caused the death of a young boy and he brings a minor to fight the Avengers? Wrong move that contradicts what the character is living in this movie.

IMPORTANT TAKE-AWAYS: Tony: "Did you know?" Steve: "I didn't know it was him (Bucky)." Tony: "Did you KNOW?!" Steve; "Yes." Both Cap & Black Widow learned Hydra killed Tony's parents in "The Winter Soldier". Neither knew who Hydra used to do the actual killing. 1) Zemo won. He split the Avengers. 2) Tony was motivated out of guilt to agree with the accords. Guilt for the boy's death. Desire to appease Pepper by "splitting the difference". 3) Cap knows any organization & any government can be wrong or tainted. He is used to defying orders to make a positive difference. In Cap 1, he disobeyed the General to rescue the 107th division (Bucky's division). 4) Iron Man & Black Panther switched motivations at the end. BP learned that vengeance consumed Zemo & then Tony. He no longer wanted to walk that path. Tony knew Bucky was brainwashed against his will. Tony didn't care. Tony turned villain. Tony wanted to kill Bucky for what the Winter Soldier had done. 5) Cap not only saved Bucky's life, he saved Tony's soul. In his rage, Tony would have become a murderer of an innocent man. Cap & Black Widow (Nat) were close friends. Off screen, it was clear they must have discussed & agreed to not tell Tony about Hydra killing his parents. Nat is extremely proficient at psychological profiling and Tony was her case study (IM 2). She knew Tony had been suffering emotionally and was a loose cannon. We can speculate that Cap would factor her input into his decision, especially since the Avengers had been hunting Hydra for a while in Avengers Age of Ultron.

Arguably the best movie of the mcu right here. And the comic line that they based this movie off of is one of the best comic storylines too. It really don't get much better than this. The action, the stakes, the characters, the story, the intense emotional drama. Its just epic!
That's understandable, and that's why Steve doesn't stop fighting him in that scene: he knows Tony won't easily give up the idea of killing Bucky right there. There are reasons to spare Bucky, while not forgiving him; but Tony is bent on killing him.
I am fine with the response of Tony but after the fight , Steve said sorry and said if Tony ever needed if he gonna be there but he was still arrogant till endgame on cap .
Both decisions are perfectly in character. Cap doesn't fully trust the government after what happened with Hydra and Shield. And tony feels like he needs an overseeing hand after he created ultron. Such a good movie.
When Steve Steve says he's been on his own since he was 18, resonated so hard for me since I joined at 17. He also say she never "Fit in" anywhere, I cry every time, as I never felt a connection with anyone unless they were my bullies. I thank fully outgrew that shell and became my own person.
PLEASE, you, and EVERYONE, if you haven't already, embrace the One True Only God YHWH Jehovah, Only One Jesus Christ His Only Begotten Son and Lord and Savior of our souls and the Only One Holy Spirit. God is good. God is love. Jesus is Lord. Jesus IS coming. Your soul depends on it! I have seen God act in my life. He saved my soul, changed my heart, changed my mind, helped people through me, took care of people in my life, people I hurt before I found God. God is the only reason I was able to reconcile with my dad before he died. God worked through Jesus Christ to save our souls. Jesus Christ died on the cross for our sins. Believe in your heart and confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus, and that God raised Him from the dead and you will be saved. Be baptized in The Holy Spirit, and if He wills, water as well. Repent of your sins, accept God, Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit into your heart, that Jesus Christ died on the cross for your sins. For God so loved the world that He gave His only Begotten Son Jesus Christ, that all who believe on Him shall not perish but have eternal life. Jesus Christ is The Way, The Truth and The Life. No one comes to the Father Jehovah God but through Him. Not long after I got saved I prayed to God for help understanding the Holy Bible, and that same day someone knocked on my door asking me if I wanted to understand the Bible. The Holy Bible says, "love thy enemy", "turn the other cheek", "If your enemy is hungry, feed him", "if he is thirsty, give him a drink", "pray for those who persecute you", "do not repay evil for evil". LORD willing, all humans may commit sin of almost every kind (gay, straight), and that's wrong, and all humans sin, as God tells us through the The Holy Bible, "for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and all are justified freely by His grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus." The Holy Bible also says, "If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.", "Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you." and, “For if you forgive others their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you, but if you do not forgive others their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses."
I love that Captain America movies have this more serious tone to them, while still being funny ofc. And watching someone react who wears her heart on her sleeve is so rewarding, like knowing where your thoughts go while you watch, keep up the good work! Love ya
Partially correct. There's quite a bit of CGI around it, I've already mentioned it in another comment. Yes the motorcycle has little to no CGI (except for the strings removal). However all around it is packed with cgi like destruction, string removal, carpet removal, characters coming in flying or jumping, etc.
Yeah because that makes sense, he just keeps getting promoted regardless of how often he fails, lmfao. Dude should be in prison not secretary of state, tf?
@@ThePartisan13 Exactly! Ross is the longest-running villain in the MCU. An act of war in Brazil, an attack on a college campus, creating the Abomination, attempted murder of Bucky, attempted suppression of human rights. The fact that he's not in prison and is now secretary of state clearly indicates there's still plenty of corruption, even if Hydra has been eliminated from SHIELD.
@@ThePartisan13 The films don't show it, but he knows how to play the system and, even with all his failures, he still has a broad support among those fearing superbeings.
I love how so much of the conflict in this film is solely spurred by character action and the numerous cascading consequences to those actions, from the Lagos incident all the way to the final clash between Tony and Steve & Bucky. Also Zemo is such an underrated villain; he has simple yet completely understandable motivations for his actions, and is essentially THE first villain that the Avengers as fought that's truly beaten them. I know folks call this Avengers 2.5 but it really is the culmination of Steve's entire narrative arc since First Avenger; he is forever doing his best to follow his heart and be the good man that Erskine knew he always was, but now has to contend with the fact that even those good intentions can come with great consequence, even if the path that takes him down that route is still the path worth taking.
WHAT A TRANSITION! Tony, the "You can't have my suit" decides to allow the UN to dictate when/where he uses the suit, while Steve, the "Perfect Soldier" wants to keep that decision in the hero's hands. Sikovia changed everything. Zola revealed to Cap (in "the winter soldier) that Hydra had ordered Tony's parents Assassination, but not that Bucky was the one that did it.
I think Tony's belief in the Sokovia Accords was understandable, given the damage superheroes in the MCU have caused. I also think Tony was justified in his hatred for Steve for lying to him and about how he knew Bucky killed his parents. However, I agree entirely that Steve was right about the Sokovia Accords and how having superheroes under government control is a bad idea and only restricts them from truly making a change when they truly need it. RIP Chadwick Boseman (aka T'Challa/Black Panther) you will always be our king and in our hearts🕊
Tony may have been justified in his anger towards Steve for not been transparent with Bucky been partially responsible for Tony's parents death even though that was Hydra but Sokovia that's all on Tony when he decided to create Ultron & keep that info from the rest of the Avengers.
I don’t think Steve knew it was Bucky(hence the “I didn’t know it was him” line). He knew it wasn’t an accident and that Hydra had Tony’s parents killed(the computer version of Zola told him and Nat before trying to take them out in a misleading strike).
@@russelturner5771 Except that just circles us back to Steve knowing about how Tony's parents died, since he lectures Stark about Ultron with, "Every time someone tries to win the war before it starts, innocent people die. Every time." Which innocent people did he mean, exactly?
Tony was somewhat justified in being mad at Steve for holding the secret from him since Bucky killed his mom but then how many kids lost their parents due to Tony selling weapons before his whole arc starting from Ironman. But trying to kill Bucky , who himself was a victim is not doing anybody any good . Tony should have directed towards Hydra , the actual people responsible for programming Bucky to kill
At around the time this movie went into production, superhero movies were under a lot of criticism for their cavalier depictions of collateral damage and wanton destruction. These characters are supposed to be heroes, but they seemed far less concerned about preventing cataclysmic death and destruction. So it feels very much like that criticism was written into the script, with the Avengers finally being confronted about it and being made to answer for it in some way with the Sokovia Accords. It ends up dividing the team, which will have MASSIVE repercussions later on.
It's annoying that everyone kind of skips over that it was Steve being distracted that kicks the whole thing off. Whatever Tony did or didn't do, he wasn't even there when the thing in Lagos happened, and Wanda, who really gets the dirty end of the stick because of Steve's carelessness, wouldn't have had to step in at al if he'd been on the job like he was supposed to be.
@@MsSwordwolf I beg to differ. Steve wasn't distracted. The guy literally decided to kill himself with an explosive that was meant to take out more than just him. He had just hinted as much to his henchmen minutes before. Why would Rogers think the guy was on a suicide mission? We only knew because of exposition. Wanda was able to get the explosion off ground level, but that explosion was going off no matter what.
@@MsSwordwolf I don´t think the main issue is Steve being distracted (I mean if we look at it like it would have happened in the real world) but rather that they chose to engage with the group in middle of a crowded area. And what makes it worse is that it happened in a foreign country where they were conducting what could be considered a military operation without the mandate of anyone. In the real world that kind of stuff could start a war. It is a bit like KGB (well I'm not really sure about the relationship between US goverment and the avengers as they seem to be a private organization... so maybe Wagner?) starting a full on firefight with ISIS in middle of the Times Square ending up with a whole bunch of dead civilians.
@@timmokoo5679 Yup. This movie always makes me hate Captain America so much. Not that his arguments are necessarily bad, but his cavalier attitude brushing off the risks, dangers and lives their actions HAVE taken is insane to me. He mentioned "taking responsability" while literally saying he will always do whatever he wants. That's insane to me. It's not because they are superhuman that the people they endanger are...
@@samuellevesque7997I wouldn't blame Steve for missing out on the bomb but he did take accountability for being distracted because he believed he would've recognized it sooner. But his attitude isn't so clear cut... It's not like he doesn't care or that he does what he wants. He's consistently the responsible member of the team when it comes to minimizing collateral damage. In avengers 2, Tony doesnt believe there's a way to save Sokovia without any casualties and Steve adamantly rejects that solution. And one of Caps most central themes in his movies is his struggle to be righteous although he is a soldier and he has to respect authority. I mean literally the previous movie is about him discovering the organization he worked for was secretly controlled by hydra. Even before that he was constantly bumping heads with Nick Fury and that movie completely shows how even government organizations are run by people with agendas that aren't always for everyone's best interests. It was completely natural for him to reject signing the accords and he was right that they weren't even a direct solution to the issue of collateral damage, because it really only shifts the blame. He comes across as unnecessarily stubborn but his stance is perfectly reasonable. Both sides are which is part of why I love this movie so much lol
I want you to remember the line between Black Panther and Hawkeye. "We haven't met yet, I'm Clint. I don't care." That exchange comes back in another movie.
When you think about it both Tony and Steve completely switched philosophies between Avengers 1 and this movie. Steve believed in the system at first and thought that if you have orders that you should follow them without question, then became the outlaw who will do what he believes is right even if it’s against the system he swore to protect. And Tony had zero accountability or responsibility for his actions because he believed the ends justify the means, and now he believes that all heroes need to be put in check no matter what.
It's especially funny because Tony only feels that they need to be put in check because that woman made him feel guilty. And rather than accept that its him who needs to be put in check, he tries to force Steve et al. to atone for *his* crimes.
@@elishawilson5342 whether it was Wanda or not was irrelevant. Bruce himself said that “the world just saw The Hulk, The REAL Hulk for the first time today”. Hulk wasn’t strong enough mentally to hold off Wanda. It’s probably why he didn’t give control back to Banner for 2 years, because he wanted to learn.
(At 9:18) Long live our MCU King. This was Chadwick Boseman's first introduction to the MCU. Oh damn I just realized, Disney just lost two kings. Since Disney owns Marvel, Chadwick Boseman is the second king. Our first king who died recently at 93 is James Earl Jones.

In the comics, the Civil War event was a little different. The hero community (comprised of hundreds of heroes) either had to register and join with government organizations, meaning any secret identity they had would have to become public versus those who were against registration. There was also more involved, but that was the basics.
Not sure if this is true, but I feel Cap knocked the helmet off Tony's suit before taking out the power core, cause I'm assuming that Cap was thinking without power, Tony may not have been able to get the helmet off and could possibly suffocate or something in the helmet without power.
2:57 Her scenes are so epic because of Heidi Moneymaker; her stunt double. She actually plays the blonde female winter soldier we see in Bucky's flashbacks.
The issue is not a SINGLE member of Team Tony actually follows the Accords. In fact, everyone of them immediately break the Accords either in the same movie or their next onscreen appearance. And they all do it due to their own sense of justice and righteousness, just like Steve said real heroes would. This whole movie is ahout Tony struggling with his faults and taking it out on others. Even the opening monolgue from him drives that point home.
Love watching these reviews. Always fun to get someone else's take. If I had to pick the most heartbreaking line it would be "I don't care, he killed my mom". The heartbreak was so real. I also love Kristen's laugh, it is so up beat and makes the funny parts that much better.
Sharon's speech was Cap's in the comics. It was longer and better in the comics, but I'm glad it made it's way into the script and if it couldn't be Steve giving it, Sharon is a good second choice.
It's more interesting that both sides of the divide do have valid points, so the judgement on who is right could be left to the viewer. Although, I think in pure pragmatism, Steve was right because his decision was based on experience and logic, while Tony - who normally favoured logic - made his choice purely because of emotion, with him using reason as a justification to avoid thinking about his own irrationality. Steve did have an emotional factor due to his friendship with Bucky, yet in the big picture he was being the more rational.
This is what made this movie so great. You hear Steve present his case, and you think, "Huh. Yeah, you're right." And then you hear Tony present his case, and you think, "Huh. Yeah, you're right." The disagreement is real and rational on both sides, and it makes it a struggle for us not being able to see a side as clearly right. Batman vs Superman came out around this time, and in contrast, the conflict of it felt so stupid it was hard to take seriously.
Yo i might be tripping but, Did y'all notice that the collar Wanda has around her neck at 38:28 in the prison was the same type of collar in Deadpool 2 that stops a mutant from using their powers?? Funniest thing is she might still be able to use her powers even with the collar on as she's a witch not a mutant 😂
The thing I love about movies is that they can hurt my heart. Wouldn't be the same without it. You've seen LOTR now and that entire series is filled with hurt.
"Could you move your seat up?" "No." "You couldn't have done that earlier?" "I hate you..." 🤣🤣🤣 Sam's so jealous that Cap is risking everything for Bucky 😡
Cap have no superpowers, he is just peak human in the comics, but he have shown to do feat of superhuman strength when it really matters, sheer determination
Kris, great job! This is probably your best reaction and a fitting movie for it. (Your laugh/cry while watching Armageddon with Steph was epic, tho!😁).
Comic book fan here, not just a comic book MOVIE fan. I love Marvel and DC, along with a plethora of other comic book publishers. That said, the Martha joke is played out, dumb af, and shows those that don't understand how saying that word at that moment could have "triggered" Batman. Bruce Wayne goes out at night, dressed up like a bat, putting his life on the line, because of one specific event in his life, the death of his parents. So of course, when he's in the middle of killing somebody and they mention her name, in that manner, it's going to make him think of it. There was a lot of other issues with Batman v Superman, but that was not one of them. It's bewildering to me the amount of people that don't seem to understand why mentioning the name of someone that triggered his "psychosis" to begin with, would not give pause.
@@jlhanlon1980 And yet, in a movie, it doesn't play out the same as in comics. You shouldn't be so much bewildered. "Exelsior!", "cup of joe", "Hulk smash!" and a host of other phrases are staples of comics that aren't translated to the movies because it just doesn't work the same. (Only Sam Raimi has included 'cup of joe' in 'Darkman' as far as I can tell, and Raimi totally framed that movie as close to comic book style as any movie that side of 'Kick Ass'.) How many Superman villains aren't even considered for the movies because of their silliness? How many DC movie fans have never heard of Bizarro? Mr. Mxyzptlk? Cut people some slack. As good as Civil War was onscreen, Stark sounded plenty petulant saying 'he killed my mom'. Specially since up to this point, he's only referenced his stunted relationship with his dad, and never once mentioned his mom.
I remember Spider-Man was added a bit last second. The deal with Sony came through and they agreed to introduce him in Civil War that was mid production. Another funny thing is initially Batman vs Superman by Snyder was meant to be released the same weekend until Warner changed the date. Before that movie got released there was a lot of expectations about it and some saw both hero vs hero movies would be on equal level but it turned out anything but that. Civil War got praised by critics as one of the best MCU films and a proof the cinematic universe worked since only the build up through several films introducing the characters and their relationships made the pay off so emotional and intense. BvS on the other hand...

I've been enjoying following you through this journey. I've been a life long Super Hero Nerd, so I love watching these movies and seeing them with a new perspective. The Civil War is based on a comic event that did pit hero vs hero. It divided the Marvel universe, and is the ONLY time I decided I did NOT want to read the comics. I actually took a break from Marvel comics for about 3 years. Seeing the heroes fighting each other broke MY heart and didn't seem in character to me. I eventually did read the stories and thought they were done well. Still not my favorite, but I adapted. Spider-Man entering the MCU is terrific. And the nice thing is the casting. Spider-Man DID start out young. He was in High School when he got his powers. His whole character was built on being a NORMAL teen ager who still had teen ager problems while fighting crime. His talking alot during fights is ALSO a defining characteristic. He started doing it because he was nervous and scared, but he also keeps it up because he KNOWS it's annoying. It makes his opponents make mistakes. Looking forward to your next instalment.
The conflicted feelings are the point. You're not supposed to be ENJOYING the "big wow" action beats in the latter half of the film, because this is friends fighting friends. It's true, no matter who wins, everybody loses. Zemo is only the victor in this.
Welcome to Phase 3 Kristen 😁. Also Tom Holland Spider-Man has arrived. I'm glad they didn't make another origin story of him we already know what happened.
I remember there was some question if Marvel was going to be able to make a deal with Sony so they could put Spider-Man in this movie, we now know how that went. This was great having so many super hero's in one movie, and fighting each other. Kristen, I think you got the characters down now. 👍
Tony told Zemo he could eventually blast his way out of that bunker, but Friday tells him he can’t beat Steve ( *A MAN* ) hand to hand. Tony is wearing the metal suit, but STEVE is the one with the “plot armor” 😂🤣
I always find it funny when people say there's "no cgi" in teh car tunnel chase scene. Sure the ruble comes out of nowhere... the removal of the strings... the replacement of the floor/carpet... the guys coming in flying... sure.
I think they mean it’s not animated. It’s all practicsl with real vehicles, wires and they run on like gigant treadmills to look fast, but yeah, there are greenscreens too.
The guy who lost his family, Zimo, does return again at some point, but I'm not going to say where, because it's a nice surprise. And this has the nice setup for a little running joke when Peter Parker and Steve Rogers are introducing themselves and find out they are from Queens and Brooklyn, so they use those as nicknames.
Yes there was a villain. What made the entire Infinity Stone Saga so incredibly good was the fact that all the villains acted in such a believable and understandable way. Each of them had a reason for what they did and had their own kind of morality. Each of them believed that what they were doing was justified and right.
If I was offered the super soldier serum that’s given to Steve rodgers. Or the ones from Falcon and the winter soldier series. There the same with some small changes like mainly the newer dose gives you super strength without the major bulk up. I would be happy with getting bulkier muscles

30:12 Fun fact: The man dead in the shower is Joe Russo, One of the directors, along with his brother Anthony Russo, of this movie, Winter Soldier, both Avengers Infinity War and Endgame, along with the future movies Doomsday and Secret Wars

Bucky Grabbing that Motorcycle WAS A PRACTICAL EFFECT!
And Chris Evans actually pulled some Muscles/Tendons in his arms when he was "Holding the Helicopter".
Arguably the best movie of the mcu right here. And the comic line that they based this movie off of is one of the best comic storylines too. It really don't get much better than this. The action, the stakes, the characters, the story, the intense emotional drama. Its just epic!
Idc what ppl say if ur in Tony’s shoes and u find out ur parents were murder and the murderer was right next to you anyone would crash out
That's understandable, and that's why Steve doesn't stop fighting him in that scene: he knows Tony won't easily give up the idea of killing Bucky right there. There are reasons to spare Bucky, while not forgiving him; but Tony is bent on killing him.
I am fine with the response of Tony but after the fight , Steve said sorry and said if Tony ever needed if he gonna be there but he was still arrogant till endgame on cap .
Her excitement when panther takes his helmet off is so cute.
Love ya
The scene where Bucky swings himself up onto the motorcycle was practical, no CGI.
Partially correct. There's quite a bit of CGI around it, I've already mentioned it in another comment. Yes the motorcycle has little to no CGI (except for the strings removal). However all around it is packed with cgi like destruction, string removal, carpet removal, characters coming in flying or jumping, etc.
6:00 remember Thaddeus Ross ? He's the general who was hunting down the Hulk in his movie, now he's the secretary of state

@@LoiKush420 she did remember Bucky, took her a second but she remembered him
Yeah because that makes sense, he just keeps getting promoted regardless of how often he fails, lmfao.
Been anxiously awaiting this one since last week. This to me is the real turning point of the mcu, when everything really starts to fall in to place.
Bring Homelander into MCU 😅

@@theylied1776what part, who'd he say it to?

In the comics, the Civil War event was a little different. The hero community (comprised of hundreds of heroes) either had to register and join with government organizations, meaning any secret identity they had would have to become public versus those who were against registration. There was also more involved, but that was the basics.
“That was the love of your life’s niece..”😂😂😂
And it just goes nowhere. They may as well have left that kiss out
Not sure if this is true, but I feel Cap knocked the helmet off Tony's suit before taking out the power core, cause I'm assuming that Cap was thinking without power, Tony may not have been able to get the helmet off and could possibly suffocate or something in the helmet without power.
2:57 Her scenes are so epic because of Heidi Moneymaker; her stunt double. She actually plays the blonde female winter soldier we see in Bucky's flashbacks.
Yes! This and Winter Soldier are my favorites 😊
I love that Tony says the truth, and Steve says people need to hear. Always love to watch your mcu journey
Dude went to watch this in theaters man what an experience this was man wish i can relive that moment again
Yeah, you're right."
The disagreement is real and rational on both sides, and it makes it a struggle for us not being able to see a side as clearly right. Batman vs Superman came out around this time, and in contrast, the conflict of it felt so stupid it was hard to take seriously.
The music playing when cap and ironman fights is hauntingly beautiful, it adds another layer of sadness.
Yo i might be tripping but, Did y'all notice that the collar Wanda has around her neck at 38:28 in the prison was the same type of collar in Deadpool 2 that stops a mutant from using their powers??

Martha...😹
(Only Sam Raimi has included 'cup of joe' in 'Darkman' as far as I can tell, and Raimi totally framed that movie as close to comic book style as any movie that side of 'Kick Ass'.)
How many Superman villains aren't even considered for the movies because of their silliness? How many DC movie fans have never heard of Bizarro? Mr. Mxyzptlk? Cut people some slack.
As good as Civil War was onscreen, Stark sounded plenty petulant saying 'he killed my mom'. Specially since up to this point, he's only referenced his stunted relationship with his dad, and never once mentioned his mom.
@@jlhanlon1980 Always a Snyder simp lurking in the comments.

Tony Stark and Peter Quill raging over their mother's murder just gets me everytime
Yes there was a villain.
What made the entire Infinity Stone Saga so incredibly good was the fact that all the villains acted in such a believable and understandable way. Each of them had a reason for what they did and had their own kind of morality. Each of them believed that what they were doing was justified and right.
Honestly, these with have you have become my favorite thing ever!
