My thoughts exactly! I remember coming back from the cinema thinking "this is how you make a 'realistic' comicbook movie but without renouncing all the stuff that makes them super heroes, with all their silliness and sci-fi elements". We were too used get to either light comedic super hero movies (like Iron Man movies or the first Avengers) or serious toned-down gritty super hero movies that pretended they weren't super heroes (like the Nolan Batman movies, which I really like as movies, but you get my point about them). This was the perfect balance of all that. Perfectly executed.

I grew up reading a lot of old Captain America comics from the 60s and 70s, which I got from a store that sold old vintage comic books. That was my introduction to the character. When I saw this movie for the first time, I felt Marvel MCU nailed his character and personality so perfectly. In different hands they could have turned him into a stereotype of what his name is. They could have interpreted his character as a one dimensional jingoistic "right or wrong, my country" following orders type of hero. But instead they made him represent what America really is, struggling to do the right thing which often means questioning and challenging authority. That was the Cap I grew up with in the old comic books.

The last two avengers movies brought audiences to cheers and tears. Do you want to be in the minority and hate the majority fine, follow Green Goblins philosophy when he told Spider-Man “The one thing they love to see more than a hero, is to see a hero fail, fall, die, trying. In spite of everything you’ve done for them eventually they will hate you.” You wanna be blinded by irrational hate, fine. @@thedarkknight2221 Lmao my level is higher up, not lower. If you're satisfied by junk food all of your life, are you going to pretend like you're better than someone who expects quality and healthy food? Judging from how you talk, I wouldn't doubt that's the case.
I really couldn't care less what critics and fans praise, I am not them. In the apt words of Rick Sanchez, "Your boos mean nothing: I've seen what makes you cheer." I would bet dollars to donuts that many of those critics also place Netflix's Cuties and Lolita very highly on their own personal lists of favorite movies. I don't think you'll need three guesses to figure out why.
Civil War was mediocre: it was still fun to watch but the story and writing weren't some crazy revolutionary thing. Infinity War had the chance to be truly amazing, but it's one half of a whole. Endgame completely invalidates it because they didn't have the balls to let people stay permanently dead, which means when you're watching Infinity War you know that *none* of it means anything. Like literally even while I was watching it and the entire year gap waiting for Endgame to come out, I knew they weren't going to let those characters die. I hoped beyond hope that they would, because then things would have a true weight to them, but I knew they wouldn't because these movies are made by businesses and not by artists.
And that's the crux of this matter: I expect *ART* not *PRODUCTS.* You're fine with consuming their products and deluding yourself into calling it art, but I can see the plastic wrapping and barcodes and "limited edition" stickers on everything. I don't delude myself into thinking that they're trying to make something real like you do. Because of this, it's easy to see the same formula present in everything. I could watch an MCU film nowadays and could tell you *exactly* what was going to happen next at any given point in the movie because they're all predictable. That isn't art, that's product.

MCU Super Hero movies grew up with this film. We got to see Cap's view on things, especially the government, change. No longer was he that rigid soldier that accepts orders without question ("Ours is not to question why, ours is just to do or die"). He's rigid to the idea of freedom and to truth and justice. When Fury wanted to save pieces of SHIELD, Cap said, "Nope. It all goes". We see even more of this growth in relation to blind loyalty to government(s) in later films. Cap is who we all aspire to be. Chris Evans was perfect for the role. Thank goodness the Fantastic Four movie wasn't good enough to earn a sequel or else we'd still have him as the Torch.

I think Kristen would like the Agent Carter series.
It is after the first Captain America film, Peggy Carter in the 50s as a secret spy. It serves to fill a bit the gap between the two films and we see Hayley Atwell as the Black Widow type of character of the time taking names and kicking ass.

This is my fav MCU film for the following funny reasons:
    1. Captain America only kisses spies! 😂
    2. Only Captain America would kiss Black Widow & friendzone her right after! 😅

You're so right that the years change your perspective. Especially themes of friendship, aging and such hit different as we age. Honestly, that last "i'm with ya till the end of the line" scene gets even me misty-eyed.

Natasha in Iron Man 2 was fine, but you really don't see her for all she is until the first Avengers movie ... She deserved her own film way sooner than she got it.
The Captain America movies have to be my favorite MCU movies pre Infinity War/Endgame. They have so much emotional content in addition to being just ripping yarns ... And although you seem to be on team iron Man, I'm firmly in the team Cap camp. Can't wait till you watch Civil War!

I was a fan of the comics version of Captain America since forever. I absolutely love this movie for creating such a perfect version of the character, showcasing all the qualities that people complain about characters like Cap and Superman, the "moral goody two shoes characters are boring" argument, and showing how interesting a story can be crafted around them without sacrificing their personality. This movie would have had to be a totally different story if it have had any other character at the center other than Cap.

This is still considered one of the best - if not THE best - MCU movie, and easily in the top 3 on anyone's list. It doesn't have the typical "superhero movie" vibe, going for an intense political thriller tone instead. It's also a gamechanger for the MCU because the stakes are so high, and the fall of SHIELD has major repercussions going forward. It showed that the MCU was not always going to play it safe, and that they weren't afraid to take big swings and shake up the status quo.

'winter soldier' (and 'spiderman 2' - 2004) is arguably one of the best superhero movies out there. also, glad you pointed out black widow's portrayal in this movie - they made her much more faithful to the source character - dark, seductive, dangerous, and serious, she's the ultimate femme fatale

This is my number one favorite MCU film, it’s so good. Just a classic mystery thriller that’s also a super hero film. You don’t know who to trust, there’s twists everywhere, especially the big monologue with Dr. Zola and the big reveal that Buckys alive and is The Winter Soldier. I remember my mind blown with it. Like I knew who he really was because of the comics but still seeing it was just wow. I also love how attentive she was during the reaction. Barely spoke a word most of the movie. Shows how great this movie is.

"The Winter Soldier", I believe, is a reference to Thomas Paine's "The Crisis" in which he speaks of "Summer Soldiers and Sunshine Patriots". These were individuals who were all for independence until the war started. Support the country unless things get tough, then not so much. The Winter Soldier, as an opposite, would always support especially in the tough times (well, cause he's brainwashed to in Bucky's case) but you get the idea.
