- Easily beat Gortash and the "Fancy Footwork" achievement by following this guide. (Instructions in the description)
If this video helped you, please leave a like and maybe check out some of my other videos.
If your time is short:
You will need a potion of speed and a potion of invisibility.
1 - Position your party in the lobby outside Gortash's room and then ungroup them
2 - Take a party member with Fly, Misty Step, or a high jump ability to the left side of the roof
3 - Fly/jump onto the ledge outside on the left and climb onto the very top of the building
4 - Open the door to Gortash's office with lockpick and close it behind you
5 - Pull the lever to let the ladder down
6 - Immediately group your party, wait for them to climb the ladder, then ungroup them again. If you don't do it this way the ladder may be invisible and impossible to climb, neccesitating that you fly back up.
7 - Take your chosen party member with a ranged weapon and position them just outside Gortash's room
8 - Drink the potion of speed and IMMEDIATELY enter turn based mode
9 - Attack Gortash with a ranged attack to proc aggro then immediately drink the invisibility potion and dash/fly to the corner where the ladder is
10 - Climb the ladder. If it is invisible, try attacking one of your companions using the side menu to select them as a target and your character should climb the ladder.
11 - Wait for Gortash to follow you up the ladder
12 - RIP AND TEAR

Thank you for uploading this video with voiceover. I find silent guide videos almost useless.
You sir, have my eternal gratitude.
You're very welcome
Thanks for the info on the upper floor. I just used the Runepowder Bomb to nuke everything and wipe out most of his troops. When Gortash climbed up, I had Karlach push shove him off the side and fall back down.
It was oddly cathartic.
Even if the ladder isn't invisible, I find that it's a good idea to attack one of your allies anyway, since it guarantees that they're dragged into combat. Otherwise if your combat starter is still invisible when Gortash ends his turn, he'll just end combat and go about his day
Good point!
Make sure it's Gale though, don't want to hurt anyone important.
@@GillyTheGhilliehow dare you disrespect gale
thank you !!! this just happened to me and i was wondering what i did wrong lol
Thank you so much for posting this, you're a lifesaver!
i grabbed him with karlach hopped up on a giant's strength potion ported out with him and had her push him off. he died instantly. karlach was pleased.
How do you port out?
@@lawldep open your map and teleport to waypoint where you can chuck him off the ledge.
Gotta try this, that sounds hilarious!
A very interesting approach. Thanks!
Thanks a ton, man. Was stuck on this one for hours.
I've been stuck on this for a while! Going to try this!! 👌
Thank you for this guide! It finally allowed me to get that damn achievement after failing to get it legit for hours (even though I swear I didn't trigger any traps!)
Thanks a lot! It worked like a charm for me. Excellent vid!
Ty! This worked for me!
Thank you for the help. Have a good day.
Genuis youre a life saver !
This play is GENIUS!!
You have my thanks, sir!
Thank you so much ❤ you saved me
You can spirit guardian him anywhere you like and finish him. I also liked the going invisible turning him to gold and putting wall of fire underneath him.
Thank you for this!!! I messed up on the 'retreat' part of 'alert Gortash and immediately retreat'... the rest of my party had to watch Karlach die a slow, painful death while they stood around in the balcony. But, hey, I got the trophy!
Thanks, that was very helpful without being too cheesy. There's still some tactic in it. But with thois tactic, i felt Gortash was easier than Orin or Ketheric. :D
Honestly the only fight I didn't think I could beat without some cheese on Tactician was Raphael.
Literally just stood in a globe of invulnerability and stepped out to whack his minions every so often
Thank you so much.
Thank you! Works on tactician mode as well!!
Excellent!
Still works (kinda) as of 12/31.
Gortash got close to but didn't actually come up the ladder but for some reason, ALL the other humans did. I waited like 5-6 turns and he didn't budge.
I cast Darkness at the bottom of the stairs and apparently that counts for being out of the line-of-sight for the traps. My whole party can see through magical darkness so they climbed down and jumped him in 2 turns.
Thank you!
Nice guide
Would this strat still work to isolate him if you have destroyed steel foundry first? I've seen another strategy that takes the back route to him and pull him out to balcony, but also pulls all his leftover npc's into it.
Be sure to do this before you blow up the foundry. I didn’t see this video until after i had done that. I didn’t think the entire fortress would turn hostile for some reason and as soon as you enter the middle area, you trigger a big fight and the traps go off. This videos tactic does work though as of 1/18.
That’s what I feel like they specifically leave out 😂 a very important detail. No wonder I can’t get the trophy, I keep going to fight Gortash AFTER I destroy the Steel Foundry. Guess maybe on my third playthrough I’ll finally get the trophy 🤦🏻♀️ Thank you so much for this!
This works only if while invisible, the SteelWatchers are there too. But if SteelWatchers are NOT there, then Gortash will lose sight of you and you have to restart. SO as an alternative, invisibility is NOT required and you can simply walk the ladder straight from the right side of the statue and it's gonna work. As a side note, the concussion bombs on the floor COUNTS as activating a trap. Other than that, thank you for your video :)
Nice!!!
I just hit play on this video. I’m downstairs in the Fortress, and a few seconds in I saw Gortash come down from the room he’s normally in. I killed him without any guards or traps and the quest and trophy popped. 😂
You can do a melee atk near your allies(free target) instead of actually hitting them ,that works too just got the achievement nice vid btw.
For me, the floor doesn't render until I'm halfway up the stairs
After trying to fight him "fair and square" for two hours and losing, I will now cheese him this way :D
Using this tactic and getting Karlach to down an Elixir of Strength, she threw Gortash into the Bell, comically ringing it right before he fell to his death. 10/10, would cheese again if just to re-enact that.
how you get to the top floor??? i just cant pass the guards, they say im not allowed to use doors
Nice good job can you show us your build ?
i just casted ottos dance, took out his minions around him and then jumped him afterwards 😭 ez fight lasted not even a minute
Dude, thank you. I made my life much easier!
otherwise you can just place 20 explosive barrels near him and blow everything up, in order to kill him instantly and get the achivement :)
gotta find 20 explosive barrels first :P
@@GillyTheGhilliei have 40ish
The Flaming Fist doesn't want you to know this but smokepowder is actually free. You can take it home. I have 4000 tons of smokepowder in my basement.
@@GillyTheGhillie We've 3 acts of scores of those barrels plus other explosives in different acts too. However, Act 3's lower city has a whole entire store FILLED with both explosive barrels and bombs. Looting everything in that store alone is enough to kill gortash 5-10 times over. Also your method wont work if you've made an enemy of him later in the act by destroying the foundry or similar either. You're locked out of the achievment then.
@@K-W1it actually does still work, i destroyed the foundry then did the same thing as this guy in the video and got the achievement after killing Gorty
Worked perfectly, except for the fact that I had no flight and couldn't reached the ladder. I used the Imp, turned it invisible and placed it beside Gortash. Then I placed my character between the ladder and gortash, attacked with the imp and did everything else as shown here.
Can I destroy the steel vigil first? Or to get the achievement do I have to leave the steel guards?
first time i met gortash i flew everyone to the window on the balcony behind his throne, when he came over we shoved him off and jumped dowjn to finish him. the steel watchers bugged and couldnt jumped down, also body blocking the rest of the guards
I've seen a few cheese strats for Gortash, my favourite (though not as easily replicable as my method IMO) was telling him you'd side with him then casting spirit guardians (which NPCs run away from) and slowly guiding him towards the battlements before yeeting him off
SOmeone an idea why it does not work for me? The Trophy does not pop up :(
I do it exactly like this. Is it possible that i walked in one of the traps outside and this counts now?
Thank you. First video Ive found that didn't have me cheesing him off a cliff. And yes, as others have said, thank you for voicing the guide.
Awesome! This still works in May 2024
This was a lotta help, I killed Gortash, but now I can't find a way to deal with the metal men
When does he go to that room anyway ? He’s only on the bottom floor for me ? The throne room
This video gives me Playstation magazine vibes.
You can also wait for Elder Brain to kill him :D
After watching this video I at first was sad because I was already allied with Orin so he waited in the big room on lower level full of hostiles and traps. But then considered I could use invisibility instead to just smuggle the party up to his butt and whoop him to death while everyone is Surprised. It worked xd
he’s in the thorn room. idk what i did to make him stay there
Does destroying the factory ruins the achievement? I'm not getting it D:
How ur minthara attacked so many times?!
I've done this 4 times following your exact instructions but I still haven't gotten the achievement. :
That's very peculiar, have you made sure that you're not setting off a trap when you go to shoot at Gortash initially?
@GillyTheGhillie I figured out that I set off a trap earlier in the Audience Chamber, so I reloaded and avoided activating any traps anywhere, and I got the achievement.
@@loth_one glad to hear it!
If I used Invisibility Gortash wouldn't follow me but using Dimension Door to get back to the ladder after attacking him worked
Weird. I used Fly (Illithid version specifically) after the attack and he didn't actually climb the ladder.
Do the traps outside the rooms before the fight starts count? Killed him without any of the traps going off but trophy didn't unlock, or does it unlock after everyone's dead?
Yes the traps outside count, as well as the ones downstairs.
The achievement should proc as soon as Gortash dies.
How do you get gortash to go in to that room? I explored the roof and that room before going to his coronation and I actually destroyed all the traps already, I haven't gotten around to actually killing gortash yet, but he is still his the viewing chamber or whatever it's called where he got coronated, do I have to do a rest to get him to move?
You need to speak to him first. If you've already attacked him then you probably can't get him to move to the roof.
@@GillyTheGhillie I haven't attacked him, I've only spoken to him during his coronation, no attacking
It works, tested with my rogue same steps 02/01/2024
how do you get to the top?
is your custom character supposed to be patrick bateman?
I think disarming the traps beforehand before he moves there also denies the achievement
Do the traps in the Audience Hall count? I did everything in the video and I still didnt get the acheievement.
Exactly what I wanted to ask. I killed everyone in the audience hall which set off a couple traps, left to do a few hours worth of other side missions, came back and did this and did not get the achievement.
EDIT: reloaded a save, yes, looks like you have to avoid the audience hall completely
He doesn’t follow me up the stairs. Idk what I’m doing wrong.
when i go invisible the fight ends the next turn
I just tried following this guide and successfully killed him up there but didn't get the achievement. Didn't set off any traps either did they patch it so the achievement can't be earned this way?
You may have triggered traps in the steel watch forge or downstairs
@@GillyTheGhillie I ended up completing it with the steel watch still active. Guess you have to have not destroyed them first
Can you still do it without a haste pot? I don't think I have any
You can craft potions using the millions of ingredients you pick up throughout the game. I definitely realised this before Act 3 of my second play through. I definitely didn't lug around 50 kg of ingredients that I never used in my first play through.
How can i trigger that Gortasch ist not anymore in the ceremony room, without destryoing the steelwatch?
Should be up there after the ceremony and you rest a day or so. Might only trigger after a companion is kidnapped.
How are you going first in the combat order I'm always going after Gortesh
Barbarians have +3 to initiative starting from level 7, plus my character has 18 dex (another +4) from the gloves of dexterity.
BG3 uses a d4 for initiative rather than a d20 so even if I'm rolling a 1 I still have an 8 on the initiative roll, which is going to be higher than anything in that fight could possibly roll.
Didin’t work 😢, even though i don’t activated any traps in his room, i think that some trap along the way was the problem, fortunately i have a save before i entered the combat zone of wyrm’s rock.
GWM/Illithid luck makes sense..., but... where in the nine hells did you manage to get BtB crits?
In DnD 5E (and Baldur's Gate 3 which uses its ruleset) all attacks on a paralyzed creature from within 5 feet are automatic critical hits.
The amulet I used to paralyze enemies on a crit can be looted off the Surgeon in Act 2.
The ability that lets me auto crit an attack is an illithid power.
@@GillyTheGhillie Oh! I missed the paralysis proc reaction, right after the illithid luck proc
Nicely done!
I wish I understood why every RUclipsr crits 100% of the time and I almost never do 😅
Been a while since I played, but the 100% crits came from paralysing Gortash with an amulet that paralyses on crit.
There is an illithid power that lets you convert any hit into a crit once per day.
Melee attacks against paralysed opponents are automatic crits.
The problem after killing lol. How tf am I going to leave this place ? Jesus
Doesn’t seem to work for me. He won’t come up the ladder and just stays in the square room with the ladder. Possible it does’t work on tactician?
This was recorded on Tactician difficulty. Is it possible that the watchers are body blocking him from the ladder?
Does anyone know if Gortash or his minions activate the traps if it invalidates this strat? I followed this and it works, but on Gortash’s way up he triggered one of his traps. I didn’t get the achievement once he was dead
Gortash and co shouldn't trigger their own traps. The shield generators that hit him aren't considered a trap for this. Did you trigger any of the gas traps outside or any traps on the floor below?
Does this still work? I've been struggling to get the achievement to drop for myself (I've submitted a bug report and uploaded my own boss fight), and tried everything but nothing ever works :/
I was just wondering the same as this strategy did not pop the achievement for me
@@Ziriix Yeah I had done a similar strategy after defeating the Steel Watch which is supposed to still be okay, and didn't trip any traps but the achievement still didn't trigger for me
@@Ziriix Larian got back to me about my bug ticket, I gave them my save file so Devs will look at it 😊 maybe it'll explain what we're both doing wrong
I tried it and it didn't work, it doesn't give me the achievement
After patch 4, this didn't work anymore. I had Gortash inthe Throne room all of a sudden. Another bug ? Thank you Larian :P
same for me, he doesn't leave the throne / coronation room at all
@@luzies6334 So either they changed it or that’s a bug they still didn’t fix
I wonder how you get the Fancy Footwork achievement now
@@MoonsongReverb i snuk in the hallway behind the throne room, attacked some random guards and Gortash actually ran into the hallway. It was a tough fight, but I managed on the second try with only Karlach surviving. I hadn't taken out the steelwatch forge beforehand, which I'd recommend because it would have been soooooo much easier 😅
@@luzies6334was that solo or in party?
@@MoonsongReverb that was in party, Gale, Wyll, Karlach and my Halfelf Ranger
I did this after the disabling the steel watch and didn't get the achievement. Do you also have to avoid the stun traps BEFORE the fight? Because I got hit by one beforehand
From what others have said, yes, you do need to avoid those ones as well.
@@GillyTheGhillie word. Time for another playthrough lol
wait the steel watch have to be alive to get this achievement?
@@arualient I dont think so, you just have to avoid traps even BEFORE the fight happens
@@CalebSmith-gg1dt the only traps are the ones on the roof but I didn't set them off, I just discovered them but since I've not pissed Gortash off yet they don't explode. I saw someone mention you have to do it before you blow up the steel watch tho, will give that a try
How did you crit 5 times in a row? (Ignoring luck of the far realms)
Paralyze and hold skills make any attacks made within 3 meters automatically crit
And to add to that, the amulet I initially paralyzed him with is from the Surgeon in Act 2. First crit was from "Luck of the far realms", an illithid power.
Fancy Footwork achievement? what is it?
Requires that you don't set off any traps during the Gortash fight.
09.01.2024 still works (steam version)
only work if steel fackers are alive
It should work even with them dead, but you'll need to attack him from outside of conversation proc range.
What if he’s not on this floor?
I can’t find him
You guys joking ? I spent hour to make this everyone climing that ladder and after I killed everyone still live whole steel giant stuff how you gonna survive.
doesn't work anymore smh
Wish i had watched this video first, got him first try but was swearing the entire fight how bullshit it is with his fucking shields and the other crap he threw at me.
This game is f*cking stupid. I want to fight him head on without tadpole powers and stand no chance of doing so. in fact this game forces you to have Illithid powers at some point or another just to get in the same room as Gortash...I'm a Paladin! my Oath would not stand for me using the tools of a vile, tentacled abomination
This is probably the most overrated game ever made lol. I’m literally dying of boredom getting these trophies. I think it’s time to accept to fact I wasted 70$
Sneaky. I like it.
Here's an easier way. After talking to Gortash at the ceremony, climb the ladders on the outside of the castle to the top level (where his throne is), and take out the Steel Watchers and traps before he comes up to the top level. After a day or so, he'll go up to the top level where you can lure him outside with an arrow and kill him and his guards.
Thank you!
